Ahhhh it has been 4 years since I've been back per my review and I am so glad it is still here and thriving!! I was lucky enough to see Han again, sweetest person! The food of course remains the same, delicious as ever. We got both specials, the fish/soup/rice dish and the waygu pho. AMAZING! Absolutely love the decor, the service is top notch and the servers are so kind! Beyond happy to have had the chance to come and try more items on the menu.
We've been here for so many times. It's only now that I get the chance to write a review and give this pho place a 5star. We were here on Friday before the Father's Day. This is the only place we love to go when we are craving for Pho. The ambiance is amazing and their staff are excellent in every aspect. We enjoy the food and drinks. Different selections of pho, favorite is the fillet mignon and the oxtail. Their bahn mi beef and bone marrow was an excellent recommendation by our server. For appetizers we always order the fried egg rolls and spring rolls. For drinks always ordering the fresh coconut juice and jasmine tea. By the way, parking is not a problem, we always parked at the parking garage, $5 fee, and a walking distance to the restaurant.
We finally gave this pho spot a try, and it did not disappoint! The pho broth was incredibly flavorful and instantly brought back childhood memories of eating pho in Việt Nam. You can really taste the care and authenticity in every bowl. One of our favorite things is that they offer fresh flat noodles, which are always our go-to and made the pho even better. We also ordered the wings, and they were perfectly crispy and absolutely delicious! The bánh xèo had great flavor as well, though I do wish it had been a bit crispier. Even so, everything we tried was very enjoyable. The staffs were very friendly. I love the interior designs! Overall, we had a wonderful experience and left very satisfied. Great food, authentic flavors, and definitely a place we'll be coming back to again and again!

This place is the best. They have a great beer and wine list (get the Harland Japanese Lager) and lots of good gluten free options. Go for the Bun Bowl and get the shrimp. It is perfectly cooked and so delicious. My husband loved the beef stew and the bread that came with it. The salad rolls were fresh and their peanut sauce (I hear) is delicious. The service was so friendly and the place is cute with really fun decor. Go watch there and try the shrimp! It's gluten free and delicious!
I was craving wings and my friend wanted pho so we came here bc they had both. I loveeeeeed the wings! It was so crispy and the sauce 100/10 I would come here just for it. Also got some spring rolls which is pretty standard. The shank pho was good too my friend really liked it. Service was quick and friendly. I'm def coming back just for the wings alone
This is an interesting Vietnamse place with some fusion concepts in some dishes and staying traditional in many others. We had the Saigon Chicken Wings, which does a nice job of using fish sauce in the batter, it's a good mixture of sweet and savory, topped with cilantro and fermented carrots and radish slices. I also had the signature pho with all sorts of different beef cuts and includes bone marrow which is understandably why the price is a lot higher than other traditional pho places. The broth is flavorful and the different beef cuts offered a lot of variety. The brisket and oxtail were some of my favorites. Parking is always an issue as the restaurant is located in the heart of North Park, you may have to walk several blocks to get here. Also, the price in general is more expensive compared to what I'm used to paying for when getting pho.
We were very hungry after going to Seaworld. We wanted Pho even though the temperature was close to 100 degrees! We eventually chose Shank & Bone from the other pho places. Glad we did! The customer service was great and they were very attentive to our needs. My family ordered many dishes including the Ca Kho (Fish braised in a rich, sweet, and savory caramel sauce) with Canh Chua (Vietnamese Sour Soup). My wife said it was delicious and reminds her of home. I, myself ordered the Signature Phở S&B. The presentation was amazing especially the pour of hot pho broth into my bowl. The broth was full of flavor and on point! One of the owners came up to us and made sure everything was going well. Thank you! We will definitely visit here again!
This spot was AMAZING! Located in the heart of North Park. Shank & Bone offers traditional Vietnamese comfort food with a modern twist! We ordered (4) Chicken Phō, (1) Filet Mignon Phō, and (2) orders of Saigon Chicken Wings and egg rolls! The chicken wings were cooked to perfection (extra crispy), but still tender and juicy! Egg rolls were on point (dipping sauce was fire). The broth at Shank & Bone was exceptionally flavorful and rich, with clear hints of star anise, ginger, lime and mint. The filet mignon was tender and cooked perfectly in the piping hot soup. Rice noodles were served with the perfect texture, and the basil and bean sprouts were very fresh. Service was quick and efficient, and the vibe was lively, making for an excellent, authentic Vietnamese dining experience! We will definitely be back for more!
Shank and Bone delivers the kind of pho that makes you sit up a little straighter. The broth is the star. Deep. Clear. Built with patience. You taste the hours. Adding oxtail is a brilliant move because it turns the bowl into something richer and more luxurious without losing the clean brightness that makes great pho great. The grilled shrimp over salad with rice noodles was another win. The shrimp had real char, the herbs were fresh, and the whole dish felt balanced and alive. Light but satisfying, the kind of plate you finish without realizing you were halfway through. The dining room leans upscale without feeling stiff. Interesting art on the walls, warm lighting, and those mopeds as statues give the space personality. It feels intentional. It feels fun. Generous portions, great value, and food that shows real technique. Shank and Bone is an easy five stars.
Worth every penny! Shank & Bone is located in the bustling heart of North Park, San Diego and captures Vietnamese flavors with some modern twists. The prices here are definitely higher than what you would normally pay at your comfort Vietnamese restaurant. I would say about 30-40% more. That said, if you are willing to splurge just a little, it's worth putting your money here. There is plenty of seating with a patio-style area, a bar you can sit at, booth seating, and regular tables and chairs. When we arrived at the host stand we waited a little before someone greeted us, but since it wasn't too busy we were given the option to choose where we wanted to sit. Even though it wasn't packed, there was still a steady flow of people coming in and out. The menu offers classic Vietnamese dishes but also some creative twists. They have a specials menu on a clipboard with items like smoked wagyu picanha pho and a tri-tip & bone banh mi, plus cocktails listed on another page. Even the regular menu has unique items like banh xeo tacos and a pho-rench dip banh mi. Service here was beyond amazing. Water was brought out right away and the staff checked on us frequently, refilled our drinks, and made sure everything was good. They stayed attentive even with new customers constantly coming in. We wanted to try a lot of dishes but didn't want to break the bank on a Thursday night, so we ordered the goi, grilled pork banh mi, and bo luc lac. The goi, which is a shrimp and calamari salad with cabbage, young lotus shoots, pickled carrot, mint, fried shallots, and crushed peanuts, ended up being the standout. At $16 I was initially disappointed by the size and there were maybe four pieces each of shrimp and calamari, but the flavors completely made up for it. The bright fish sauce dressing with fresh mint and crunchy vegetables was exactly what I wanted. The lotus shoots soaked up the dressing perfectly and I cleared the plate wanting more. They also give you extra dressing on the side for dipping, though I honestly didn't feel like it needed it. The grilled pork banh mi surprised me. Instead of slices of grilled pork it came out more like a pork meatloaf. At first I thought it was a shortcut, but it actually worked. The meat still carried that lemongrass grilled pork flavor and stayed moist. I also appreciated the extra side of pickled carrots and daikon since that's my favorite part of a banh mi. At $12 it was definitely the smallest and most expensive banh mi I've ever had, but it was still good. The bo luc lac was solid and on par with other versions I've had. The beef cubes were nicely seared with a charred exterior while staying tender inside. It came with onions, rice, and a platter of vegetables. I personally prefer the version that has more of the gravy-like sauce coating the beef and rice, while this one leaned more on a soy-based dipping sauce. That goi alone makes me want to come back. Everything here feels thoughtfully crafted and the service makes it such an easy and enjoyable place to dine.
The ambiance of this place is super cute and modernized. Though the audience is definitely more non-Vietnamese, the food tastes very authentic and delicious with a twist! I brought my old-school Vietnamese parents here and they approved! We ate everything family style and all of us thought everything was so tasty. My personal favorite was the beef stew (banh mi Bo kho) but everyone at the table had a different favorite which says a lot about how good the food was. The waiter/waitresses were nice and helpful as well.
Came for dinner on a Saturday night it was busy but we got in fairly quickly, I tried the banh xeo tacos and they were really good crepes style taco with shrimp & pork filling I enjoyed them since I was looking for a lighter menu option. We also got the pho bowl with brisket & bone marrow it was tasty everything was very good I'll be back to try more items

Shank & Bone have very modern decor for a Vietnamese restaurant but it was very fitting for North Park. We ordered Com Dac Biet, Bun Dac Biet, and their Wagyu Picanha Pho. I absolutely loved the rice dish and noodle bowl. Their fish sauce was flavorful and their meat was seasoned very well, especially their shrimp. I thought their pho was ok, the wagyu had a nice smokey flavor but their broth was lackluster for me. Sometimes they can be very busy but we were able to be seated right away on a Sunday evening. Parking might be an issue as well. Even though Shank & Bone is on the pricier side, I would definitely come back again. read more

In little Italy. Street parking only. Dogs allowed in their small patio area. My friend got their wagyu pho special which she really enjoyed. You can choose flat or thin noodles. Broth was very flavorful. I got the tri tip and bone marrow special with chimichurri. It was rich but good. Ok amount for the price but would've preferred a little more meat. Service was good and I liked the decor. read more
Best pho I've had! The service is great and very quick. They bring out the bowl of noodles, meat, and veggies and pour the fresh broth in your bowl at the table. It is so delicious! It is a bit more expensive than an average Pho restaurant, but it's in a fun part of town & would still highly recommend! read more

I met up with a friend for dinner who's the biggest pho fan at Shank & Bone. Since it had just started raining, it was perfect to warm up with some soup. I ordered the springs rolls and egg rolls for us to share. The veggie egg rolls were delicious and so were the shrimp and pork spring rolls. The peanut sauce for the springs rolls was perfect. I ordered the filet mignon pho and it was so good and extremely hot. I opted for the rice noodles instead of their house made noodles. My friend mentioned the rice noodles hold up better the next day. I ended up having to take the rest to go but it was the perfect rainy day meal! read more

No this place is not a steakhouse. No it's not a butcher shop either. I was surprised that this was in fact a Vietnamese spot. Located in North Park, they specialize in pho and also other traditional Vietnamese dish. I came here and ordered the braised caramelized cat fish with rice and sweet/sour prawn soup. This was honestly one of the tastiest fish I've had! Super fresh, fatty, and tender. The meat just melts in your mouth. The prawn soup was also packed with flavor. Each sip just makes you want to come back and take another sip. Overall, it was a very comforting meal and reflects traditional Vietnamese cuisine. The ambiance is also quite vibrant and modernized. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. The servers were very attentive and came to check up on me multiple times. Unfortunately given that this place is at North Park, parking is near impossible. It's probably better to park in one of the nearby residential street and just walk over. read more

Shank & Bone is the restaurant that feels like it's made by the new generation for the new generation, but still rooted in traditional flavors. Considering you have the more OG pho spots nearby in City Heights, S&B brings a more inviting and modern ambiance. The Beef Carpaccio was a really good starter. I love the dipping sauce and having a bite with the meat/watercress was excellent. I got the Signature Pho S&B which basically comes with the most amount and variety of meat. This was the first time that I've had broth brought and poured tableside which I found to be interesting. But I will say the the flavors of the broth were definitely good. Comforting and delicious. Aside from the typical cuts of meat, the oxtail was standout and very easy to eat. The bone marrow was lacking in that the bone was only half-filled with marrow. Between the upcharge in price for these other more 'premium' meats, I definitely don't think it's worth it and I would just stick a Pho Tai or Pho Filet Mignon. read more
Some place new for us to try. Very trendy. We parked kinda far and walked through a dark alley with murals. I enjoyed the taste of their broth. Interior is very uncluttered but where beautiful clientele come to have pho. Their iced coffee was good and strong I'm woke awake now. read more
The food was really good here, I got the Pork Bun Bowl with an egg roll and it was delicious! It was a bit too much for me to eat in that one sitting so I took it home and was glad that when I ate it the next day, the vermicelli rice noodles didn't get super soggy. My friend got the beef stew and the broth was super rich and flavorful. There were a couple people inside and a large party so service got a bit backed up, but they were super helpful when we were able to flag them down. I'm really interested in trying some of their other dishes next time I'm in the area! read more

Shank and Bone is a great Vietnamese food representation for North Park! My favorite dish is the catfish, which some may consider pricey, but the taste makes it totally worth it. The servers and kind and quick, though depending on how busy it is may need reminders to refill water. It's a clean, chic place that fits North Park perfectly. read more
First time here! I was just walking by and saw how busy it was and thought it must be good. I happily was absolutely right! I had the rice plate "the works" it was sooooo good and tasty! I also had the egg rolls and they were great as well! It was a nice warm day and we chose to sit inside which was a good choice but on.semi cool day it would be so nice to sit out on the patio and people watch ..I will be coming back to try the pho next read more

Came when they opened at noon for lunch and ordered the following: - Roasted Bone Marrow - I thought 3 pieces of bread wasn't going to be enough, but there was very little marrow and it probably could've fit on one slice - Beef carpaccio - delicious, I think it would've been better if the meat was cut in smaller pieces so you're not left with a giant chewy piece - Scallops - a little too much oil, but good otherwise. Wasn't sure about the carrot/daikon mixture - Pho Tai - they brought the bowl to the table and then poured the broth in from a pitcher (interesting!). Went with the flat noodles, but it was a little too soft for me. Wished there was more leafy herbs to add. Service was good. There wasn't many parties since it was early, but they were quick to clean up our table... I think I tried everything I wanted so not sure I'd be quick to return, but it was a good visit overall! read more

Craving some Vietnamese food? Definitely hit up this spot in North Park. You instantly will be drawn in by the vibes this place gives. I felt like I was transported into Vietnam with the aesthethic. I always judge a Vietnamese spot by its broth. And let me tell you, it's delicious. Also I'm loving the fresh lettuce wraps they offer. The staff is very friendly and help you with what's best on the menu to order. I can't wait to go back! Definitely get the specialties! read more
This restaurant itself is definitely slightly upscaled and modern for pho, but still very good! It's also pretty loud inside but relatively good for group dinners. I had the filet mignon pho and the meat was so soft. Broth was delicious and service was also pretty quick. read more
Fantastic options for vegan, vegetarian and meat eaters! Options for traditional pho bowls, noodle salads, kids menu and spring rolls. Staff was very kind and attentive, serving sizes were huge (love that!) and there's patio, indoor, bar and window seating! Looking for a solid Vietnamese spot in North Park? Give Shank & Bone a try! I've visited a spot a handful of times and have had a delicious meal every time! I've yet to try their signature pho, but have heard MANY great things about it from friends and fellow Yelp reviewers. This time around, I ordered the Beef Shank Bahn Mi special, which included a side of bone broth jus. Oh my GOSH did this hit the spot!! The jus was so tasty, I could drink it on its own! I love how well it complimented the sandwich. The bread was perfectly crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside and the sandwich itself was well balanced, with perfect amount of beef and crunchy veggies. The modern, industrial decor with the plentiful daylight and spacious seating makes for an enjoyable ambience. And the service, as always, is exceptional. SOLID food, wonderful staff, and an overall delicious dining experience! I highly recommend this spot to everyone looking for a great eatery! read more

Good pho broth makes great pho and Shank and Bone has it. It is difficult to park but worth the effort to come eat here. They have traditional Vietnamese food in this slightly cluttered yet cool restaurant. There is an old French map of Ho Chi Minh City district 1 on the wall and the room is decorated with many non là hanging. The staff are friendly and engaging. I ordered pho shrimp and I give it a 5 out of 5. I want to come back to try some other dishes they told me about while I ate at the bar. The bánh mì is suppose to be good. The food is amazing !!! So much flavor and just right in every way. I had the chicken wings for starters perfection I swear. For my entree the short rib pho, the best pho I've ever had. I ordered through Uber Eats and the Pho broth was piping hot still when delivered. I really liked their pho bowl and the portion was large enough for me to have leftovers. I ordered a large broth to go with it which wasn't needed they provided plenty of broth. The rice noodle rolls were decent but the peanut sauce really made that dish. I think I may have found my new go to Pho place. read more

Pretty chill lil viet spot, nothing to really write home about but the food was overall good. The egg rolls were a lil small but well made and very crispy. Shoutout the wings though, those were super buss. Service was also good, my water was always filled :) read more

Vietnamese restaurant/ Café located in the busy area of North Park and has a modern feel to it both in decor and menu. The space is really cool. It feels really sleek with some nostalgic type pieces. Came here with a few of my cousins when we were visiting the area and honestly, I was a little skeptical especially with that ampersand in the name, but we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Also note that our visit was a couple years ago, so maybe it's slightly changed. I'm not sure. For starters, I ordered a drink called the Old Pho-sioned. To share, we ordered items like the beef carpaccio and the banh xeo tacos. These dishes were beautifully plated, and the Vietnamese flavors were on point. For myself, I ordered the signature pho with bone marrow. They bring a kettle with the hot broth and pour it into your bowl at your table. Is the pomp in circumstance necessary? Probably not, but is it appreciated? Absolutely! Overall, just a really fun café with delicious Vietnamese food with some fun and creative modern takes. read more
This place was recommended to me by a friend and it was pretty yummy! We were greeted and seated pretty quickly upon arrival. The staff is friendly and answered our questions about the menu and their recommendations. We ordered the chicken egg rolls, filet mignon pho, and brisket pho. All of the food was delicious and very filling. The broth and traditional noodles tasted different to me than other pho places I've been to, but it was still delightful nonetheless. The ambiance of the place was pretty casual and noise levels weren't too bad. It was a nice spot to catch up with my friend I hadn't seen for some time. I would definitely come back here again, it's just parking can be a struggle since it's North Park and often busy with limited street parking. read more

Yes, I take my dog there all the time and sit in their outdoor area, which is heated at night.
Are the Ban Xeo tacos gluten free? What are they made of?
No they’re not gluten free. The shell is a mixture of rice flour and wheat flour, turmeric, and coconut. Please look for the gluten free symbols on our menus beside the items that are gluten free.
Do they deliver?
I am not too sure if they do. I believe that have to-go and I think they Uber eats.
Is outdoor dining available yet?
Yes, I saw customers eating at their outdoor dining area yesterday 8/16/20.
