We ordered the beef stir fried udon, mapo tofu, eggplant dish, pan fried dumplings and cucumber dish. The food was as good or better than they said it was. The mapo tofu was the highlight of the dinner. The heat was good and the numbness from the pepper corns was apparent. It was a delicious dish to have. The pan fried dumplings were more juicy than the soup dumplings I had at my first visit and would definitely recommend that over the soup dumplings. The service was good as they would occasionally check up on us to make sure nothing else was needed. The relaxed atmosphere made it more welcoming. Came here with a few friends on a Saturday morning. They were not too busy so we got a table immediately. After reviewing the menu, we ordered: - XLB (8pc) 13.95: The wrapping was a bit dry on a few of them but they were tasty on the whole - shrimp and pork wontons in chili oil (8pc) 14.95: These were my favorite. I'm always down for some soup dumplings and wanted to try this place out. It's got a big parking lot so makes it an easy trip. We ordered the string beans, stir fried eggplant with garlic sauce, pan fried dumplings, and an assortment of xiaolong baos. The non dumpling dishes were too salty in my opinion. Easy to find parking, the restaurant had plenty of tables without feeling too crowded. Service was fast when we ordered with staff. We ordered xlb, beef noodle soup, chive and pork pan fried dumplings and fried lotus slices. The food was pretty good. Xlb skin wasn't the thinnest but not super thick either. Beef noodle soup was decent- the noodles were thin (not the handpulled type) but springy. We ended up getting the ube dessert dumplings which were a bit disappointing. I'm looking for a DTF dooope and this place seemed to fit the bill! Was super hungry so ordered a good amount of food. Order came out pretty quick! 1. Popcorn chicken - 5/5 it's fried perfectly and most importantly it's also well seasoned! 2. Pan fried gyoza - 4/5. A lot of other places tasted just average. Probably something you can get at the frozen dumpling section, but nope here there's actually a difference! The filling you can tell it's made with fresh and good ingredients. Tasty and juicy! 3. We had a family lunch here some weeks ago. The location is well lit and has good air conditioning. Service was attentive (you can order from a QR code or have one of the staff take orders on their ipad). Ordering from staff was helpful as we could as for their suggestions and thoughts on certain dishes. Sis got there early as she just HAD to have the table with the electrical train-like lazy susan. Imagine the slowest kid-train at Disney slowly chugging along trying to catch up to the next slow train caboose in front. It actually drove all of us mad after awhile as the movement was SO SLOW that I jokingly asked one of the staff if they can speak it up (which they could with a remote control! - too cute). We tried: Cold cucumbers : - alot of vinegar dressing which made the veggie a bit soggy Seaweed salad: - tasted heavily of vinegar and sugar Garlic fried chicken wings ($12.95) - served piping hot and fresh. The batter was thicker but provided a nice crunch. Some pieces tasted overly fried. Expensive for six pieces. Signature XLB $19.95: - staff suggested this so we could sample 8 of their house made XLB. I thought it was expensive at $2.50/xlb . We all tried one but weren't blown away (and yes, we were comparing alot of the dishes to Din Tai Fung). The XLB was thicker and there wasn't much soup in the dumpling. Stir Fried mixed veggies: - I loved this dish. The lotus root and snow peas were delicious. There was a lot of white pepper which we really liked. Sauteed Green Beans : - you must have to love fermented black beans to order this dish. It was too much as you couldn't taste the green beans (if they were fresh or crisp, etc) Honey Walnut Shrimp : - 100% yummmm. This was my favorite dish ! The shrimp was so plump and amazing. The mayo glaze had a nice light sweetness to it. Would absolutely return for this dish alone. Dumplings : - I don't know which one we ordered and if it was steamed/boiled. Family seemed to enjoy Shrimp with Japanese Tofu $19.95 - the tofu was the best part as it was soft and silken. The shrimp wasn't good (especially compared to the Honey Walnut). Pork XLB $12.95: - eight pieces. Thicker dumpling skin and not much soup Eggplant w/ garlic sauce: - we appreciated how quickly they bring dishes to table as this one was blistering hot . Eggplant was nicely cooked Chocolate XLB $10.95: - this is their version of DTF's mochi chocolate XLB. Unfortunately, the chocolate tasted like Hershey's semi sweet. The skin was just too thick and gummy for us. Taro XLB : - two others at table said this was better then the chocolate Piggy Bun $10.95 - yes we shamefully ordered these because of the art work on buns. The four pieces were very cute. The 'creamy custard' wasn't creamy at all - maybe they steamed them too long? Overall, it was a nice family meal . The prices are high. It's hard not compare the dishes to Din Tai Fung so try to come with a different mind set so you won't be disappointed. I'd return to try more items on their menu. read more

I used to live in Carmel Creek and visited this shopping center all the time. So when I found out that there's a new dumpling restaurant here during my work trip in San Diego, I had to give it a try! Given that I was a party of 1, I had to go for the multi-color xiao long bao sampler. It was interesting to learn how they dyed all the colors of the dumpling skins. The light blue was particularly eye catching, and apparently that color was brought about using red cabbage? Anyway, all the XLB tasted good to me! My favorites were the orange crab & roe and the red spicy. My least favorite was probably the brown kbbq one. The flavors just didn't compliment well. I will say that the price for these 8 soup dumplings were quite hefty: $20. And that's not just because of the novelty. Even if you get 8 piece of a single flavor, most of them are in the $18+ range. I also got the BBQ pork buns which had a very appealing presentation. Luckily the taste matched the aesthetics! All in all, I was quite content with my meal. What a fun time we had with our local friends at Super Dumpling while visiting San Diego! A Sunday lunch, the restaurant was busy but not packed. This is a bright modern simple restaurant. Our server placed the order from her tablet instead of us using the QR code which likely saved us a lot of time. We all had water and intended to start with dumplings then progress through soup and entrees. But Asian kitchens are fast so it all came out in a jumbled order. The only way to avoid this would be to order only the course you want next. Although our table for four was overcrowded with all the dishes we ordered, it was a fantastic meal. First out were the the signature dumplings. Our friends ordered a sampler of multicolored soup dumplings, and my husband ordered the crab and shrimp dumplings. They raved about the gushy soup and the tasty centers. Each dumpling variety has a different color so you know which one without opening it. Being gluten and pork free I abstained. But it was a very short wait for entrees (and then soup after), and so I dug in. First was the beef chow fun. I believe this rich brown dish with firm long rice noodles was the best seasoned chow fun I have ever eaten. We devoured it, everyone sampling the tender beef and hearty dark sauce-coated noodles. While eating this, the sauteed string beans (add chicken $3) came out... and it too was one of the best seasoned orders of sauteed green beans that I have ever tasted. And the added chicken was a very generous portion for the up charge, bravo! The soup course made its way to the table, and we had chosen Hot and Sour. This soup was good, but felt lacking to me. I used the nice variety of condiments on the table to make it more hot and more sour (chili and rice vinegar). Then I loved it! Big chunks of tofu, some chicken, plenty of fungi and bamboo shoots. We would probably have had leftovers but the guys had another cup each. To avoid the separate charge for plain white steamed rice, we ordered the shrimp fried rice entree. It was probably the weakest dish on the table, a yellow rice with plentiful shrimp and a few veggies. The shrimp were plump but not cooked as firm as I would prefer. The flavor of this dish was completely absent. And why is it yellow? The servers checked on us periodically and took care of payment, but they are very busy and brief in conversation at the table. The restaurant is located in what looks to be a pretty new shopping center. There was plenty of easy parking available which was very pleasant and an advantage over Convoy and Din Tai Fung at UTC. Arrived as a party of 2 on a Friday around 6:40pm. Signed into the Yelp waitlist in the restaurant. It predicted the wait would be 8 to 20 minutes. It ended up being 33 minutes but it was fine. While waiting, I used their clean women-designated single person bathroom, then hung out with my son outside. There was lots of seating outside, including by a beautiful fountain in the plaza. Once seated, we enjoyed having a large pitcher of water to self serve. We ordered quickly via a QR code provided at the table. I saw others order through a server, but I figured via QR code might be easier. The food arrived gradually. First the pan fried dumplings, then the steamed dumplings, then the vegetable chow mein, and then the XLB. I liked the staggered serving of the dishes we ordered. I also liked how the sauces were delivered in tiny dishes with the dumplings. At other places they give you ingredients to create your own but the issues with that are that I might do a terrible job creating my own concoction and I don't really want to touch sticky sauce containers others have used extensively. All the food was great. I might prefer the food at Din Tai Fung more but this was very good and I thought pricing was reasonable. Service at DTF is definitely better, but it was friendly enough here. It felt a bit impersonal given the QR code ordering. I did have to ask for a fork for my son which we got quickly. I didn't get a soup spoon for my XLB which I thought was weird but I didn't bother asking for one. I got 2 to-go boxes and I scraped the leftovers in myself and put them in the to-go plastic bag they gave me. I tried to pay via the QR code but that functionality wasn't built in, so I had to get a server to help me pay. One thing that was confusing that I didn't notice till I got home was the $1 convenience fee I was charged. Not sure what that was for. The QR code ordering, the to-go boxes and plastic bag...? If it was for the QR code ordering, I think that is weird because it's actually more convenient to the servers and restaurant operations. All in all, a strong experience and conveniently located right off of the 56. I would definitely go again and maybe get on the Yelp waitlist in advance next time. read more

My friend and I came in on Monday night to try some delicious Chinese cuisine. The restaurant, only about three months old, is very clean and welcoming. When I arrived at 5:30, there was one other table of two inside, otherwise it was quiet. I let one of the servers know that I was waiting for my friend and I offered to sit in the waiting area. He encouraged me to sit at our table instead which I thought was nice of him. My friend arrived a few minutes later and we had fun perusing the whole menu. We decided on spring rolls, spicy chicken XLB, Mapo Tofu & Shrimp fried rice. The food came out of the kitchen very quickly. The XLB was the star in my opinion. I'm no expert, but they were flavorful and really hit the right notes of spicy and fragrant. (It's also fun for kids and adults alike to see the dumplings being made behind the large viewing window!) Everything was delicious overall and the portion sizes were generous. I had leftover rice and Mapo tofu to take home. The prices are a little high but I guess that is the cost of dining in Carmel Valley. We ordered the sesame balls for dessert. They came out of the kitchen in about a minute. They were also quite tasty and a pleasant way to end the meal. Based upon the experience we had, I recommend Super Dumpling for good food, a pleasant environment, and helpful service. Location is easy to find with ample parking shared with ACE hardware and the rest of the mall. The sign is unassuming, windows don't have any picture of food or menus. Gets lost among the salons and other shops Interior is very casual and has an open display of the staff making dumplings near the rear pick up area. Very fun to watch and great for kids. The place has lots of tables indoor and outdoor seating, which is convenient if you bring your dog. Service is minimal but very fast. You order and pay from your table QR code. I like the convenience and streamlined process of it--no need to talk to strangers if you don't have to. Plus, you can order food as you go. A bowl of rice (overpriced at $2) arrived within 30 seconds of tapping a button. We tried their XLB rainbow flight of 8. While visually pleasing, the flavor left a lot to be desired. Signature, corn/chicken are probably the best. Truffle and veggie texture was weird and bland. Pan fried pork and leek dumplings came with crispy bottom and were delicious Pork and shrimp wontons in chili oil were disappointing. Super Dumping is a Chinese restaurant which opened a month ago in Carmel Valley is about 8 mins east of Del Mar located in an open complex with plenty of free parking. Indoor and outdoor seating. What a late lunch here several weeks ago and made sure I visited post lunch crowd for avoid wait time. As I approached the restaurant, I noticed most of the outdoor seating near the restaurant were occupied by diners, mostly non Asians... After stepping inside, three hostile staffers asked if I was there for order pick up, I said no, I'm here to dine. The staffers immediately pointed outside, telling me to sit outside. It happened to be a particularly hot day, too unbearable and uncomfortable for me and Fendi and I communicated that to the staffers, as well as informed them Fendi is legitimately a service dog, The older male staffer asked for proof, which I quickly produced, and that ended that discussion. BTW, it's legally against ASPCU policy to asked for proof. I then pointed to the table I wanted to sit at and they all hesitatingly obliged. I sat close to the entry and observed that I the only non Asian sitting inside. The diners outside were African American and the optics was NOT good PR for this restaurant. Had already previewed the menu and ordered an iced Chinese green tea, and three entrees. Only tea and sodas available. No beer, wine or alcoholic beverages. The female waitress who took my order was surprised I ordered three entrees, as a solo diner. I wanted to order more but was reluctant because because the staffer informed me the kitchen could NOT accommodate my request for 'no pork' in the multi colored dumplings, as I do NOT eat pork. I hate it when a simple request can't be made, ugh! Ordered the golden dumplings filled with crab and shrimp, which were very tasty but had minimal soup broth. Additionally, ordered the Mongolian Beef noodles which were also good. The Kung Pao shrimp dish looked good but lacked flavor. I ate all of the dumplings and after tasting the other entrees had these boxed togo. I was not comfortable the tension the staffers projected, an overall negative dining experience. As each dish was presented, I took pics and videos of the food. The staffers came out and one of them recognized Me and Fendi. The battery on my iPhone was at 1% and desperately needed to be charged. I didn't have my portable charger and asked the younger male staffer if he had a charger I can borrow, there was a plug outlet on the wall next to me, the staffer said he would not let me borrow his charger, which I thought was not nice. The staffers chatted and then I was asked to lots of post pics of their food, I guess the hostile tone seemed to have dissipated but my phone was about to die and their staffer wasn't helpful. The restaurant looked clean with typical Chinese furnishings and decor. Service from staffers needs serious improvement in terms of training to be less hostile towards non Asian diners, be more cordial, hospitable and accommodating. Despite having tasty Chinese food, when the staffers warmed up to be semi nice, it was it was a little too late, as their uncordial demeanor would turn any diner off. read more

Super Dumpling looks shiny and new.  I tried the house special chow mein.  Chicken, beef, and shrimp were tender and had nice flavors.  Soy sauce was applied a bit heavy handed but I could still taste the mild mild starchy flavor.  I did like the smoky flavor imparted from the wok.  Pretty good dish but I prefer Minh Ky's version. 2nd visit I tried 2 different dishes. Pan fried dumplings with pork and Chinese cabbage.  I liked the crispy shell and the salty filling.  Interesting how there was a small amount of liquid inside like a soup dumpling. Yangzhou style fried rice had shrimp, pork, ham, and eggs.  There were a good amount of shrimp in this dish but not much pork and ham.  Shrimp was plump and had a nice flavor.  Pork was tender and I liked the flavor.  Ham was cut into tiny bits and hard to taste.  Overall this was a pretty good dish. Chairs had a cool looking seat cushion but not much better than sitting on hardwood. Staff was nice and efficient except it took over a half hour for my pan fried dumplings to come out even though I was the first customer and put in my order first. read more

This is a newly opened Chinese restaurant in San Diego. The dining area is clean and bright, the location is easy to find, and parking nearby is fairly convenient. When you walk in, you can see the chefs making dumplings on the spot, which really gives you confidence that the ingredients are fresh. I ordered the pan-fried beef dumplings with onions, xiao long bao, and red chili oil wontons. My favorite was the beef dumplings -- the wrappers were tender and smooth, and the filling was juicy and flavorful. Highly recommended! Read about this spot on Eater and given its so close, we decided to check it out one night after work. Restaurant is simple but clean, and the food smelled delicious when you walked through the door. We were greeted quickly and sat shortly thereafter. Once we were sat, there are QR codes on each table to order, however they did provide a paper menu as well. This is a newer spot and I believe may still be working out a few kinks in their service. While the staff was kind and our main dishes made it out hot and quick, the smaller items we ordered (i.e. soda and steamed rice) seemed to have been forgotten. We did have to remind the staff about those items and they were eventually brought out after two of the main dishes. Food wise, here's the breakdown of what we ordered: - Spring Rolls - Orange Chicken - Pork Xiao Long Bao - Beef & Onion Dumpling The Xiao Long Bao and the Beef & Onion dumplings were by far the favorites! Both were very delicious and packed with flavor. Spring rolls were perfectly golden and crispy! Sadly I felt orange chicken fell a little flat. It looks like it's going to come out swinging with flavor but I think really missed the mark. It wasn't bad by any means, just underwhelming and mild for what we had anticipated. That said, they're not known for their orange chicken here so I'd probably just skip that the next time and focus mainly on the dumplings! Came on a weekend with a large group and got sat at the large table with the conveyer belt. We got the signature xiao long bao, which was one of each of the different types of soup dumplings. I had the crab, it was good it had a strong crab/seafood flavor but I wish I just had a traditional pork xiao long bao. They are color coded so you can determine which is which. We got 2 of the pan fried dumplings; pork and chives and beef and onion. These were my favorite, they were crispy on the bottom and chewy on top. They were also very juicy, actually much more juice than the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) Bok Choy with garlic was nicely stir fried, still retained its crunch. I like the bok choy but liked the the string beans more. It was nicely blistered with black beans and garlic. Beef chow fun was probably the second favorite dish of the day. The beef was tender and the noodles soft and had a good soy flavor. We ordered the mapo tofu less spicy but it was still rather spicy. I could taste Sichuan peppercorn it had a spicy zing and slight citrus flavor. It was the perfect heat for me. I can't imagine how spicy the regular would be. For dessert we got the Ube buns. The menu states 4 pieces yet the picture shows 8 pieces. So it was a bit confusing. When it arrived it came with 8 pieces. It tasted more like taro than Ube. It was not as sweet or deep purple as I think Ube is. Service was excellent. We were sat at the one large table with the conveyer belt. So if you have a large party make sure you make a reservation as all the other table are mostly 4 tops. Ordering was done via QR code which came with a $1 convince fee, not a big deal but I think you could order with the waitress if you want to avoid it. There's lots of parking in the lot. New local dumpling & Chinese food spot took over where Villa Capri was in Carmel Valley. Our area needed a restaurant like this. Food was very good and so creative! Love that the dumplings come in different colors. All colors are made naturally and the menu explains that. Highly recommend trying the Xiao Long Boa (soup dumplings). Our favorite was the Black Truffle which uses squid ink to get that deep color in the dough. My kids loved everything. The portions are big which is great for a Mom like me with two teenage boys. Service was great! They were very attentive even though they were bustling with a full restaurant and lots of take out orders. We came to Super Dumpling recently for a group weekend lunch after learning that it opened in the Piazza Carmel off Hwy 56. I am not sure if this business was related to one of the same name from Orange County because on the outside of a takeout menu, there was a crossed-out Brooklyn, NY address and phone number. Perhaps it had some roots on the East Coast, but I never asked the staff. Parking was plentiful in the plaza lot. The inside of the suite was smaller than I had expected with a capacity for about 50 customers. There was only one large oval table which we occupied because of our party of eight. In the middle was an automated lazy susan that was operated by remote control. I had never seen one of these before, but it was a neat contraption with the conveyor belt rotating counterclockwise slowly. You had to be careful and ensure that no objects were near the belt because dishes that were set on the lazy susan could collide with them and cause spillage. There were nearly 100 choices on the menu as each item was numbered for easy reference. We chose the following spread for our meal that arrived in the following order. * Sauteed String Beans * Stir Fried Bok Choy with Garlic * Spring Rolls (4 pc) * Beef Chow Fun * Mapo Tofu * Signature Xiao Long Baos (8 pc) * Vegetable Fried Rice * Pan Fried Beef and Onion Dumpling (8 pc) * Pan Fried Pork and Chives Dumpling (8 pc) * Ube Bun (8 pc) The Sauteed String Beans had fermented black beans, scallion, and minced garlic for garnishments that added pungent flavors. The Spring Rolls came with a side of sweet dipping sauce. We asked for the Mapo Tofu to be less spicy than the two chiles symbols shown on the menu. It still had quite a bit of kick from the Sichuan peppercorn in the spicy sauce. The Signature XLBs consisted of one of each of the following soup dumplings that were colored differently to distinguish the fillings. The quality was good, but not the best we have tried. * Pork - beige * Chicken and Corn - blue * Korean BBQ Beef - brown * Crab Meat and Shrimp - yellow * Crab Meat - orange * Black Truffle - black * Spicy Chicken - red * Vegetable - green Our party thought the two sets of pan-fried dumplings were the best items because they had a juicy filling that squirted out liquid when you bit into them. This was what I expected from the XLBs, however the effect was not the same. The Ube Buns for dessert were the least impressive offering. The food arrived from the kitchen at a steady pace. The automated lazy susan allowed each of us to snap a photo of the items when they rotated in front of our setting. I enjoyed our lunch enough to give Super Dumpling a four star rating. read more

To avoid waiting in line for a table, go before the lunch/dinner rush. It looks like it is trying to setup some sort of online waiting system. Hopefully it will come soon. We sat at one of the outside tables at 5:30PM on a Friday evening. By 6PM, there is a line of people waiting and watching us eat, lol. Be aware: there is $1 "convenience fee" if you order online with the table QR code. hmmm... I saved some waiter time. Whose convenience is that, restaurant owner or the customers? Food: Kitchen hot dishes taste were decent. My son liked the eggplant in garlic sauce because of the sauce. The pepper beef was tender. Portion size: good for 2-3 peopl; not family sharing size. XLB and pan fried dumplings: average. The wrapping skin is a bit too thick. This is probably good for causal family takeout dinner on hot kitchen hot dishes, although the portion size needs to increase. People don't need to go to Convoy and Mira Mesa for Chinese food. Came on a Saturday evening around 6 pm, there was a line out the door, given it's a soft opening. Overall great service, food came out relatively quickly. Here's what we got: - string beans: crispy, probably once deep fried (opposed to twice) but I liked it this way as it didn't taste as dry, it was still tender and well flavored - Xiao long bao: the skin is doughier/chewier than DTF's but I prefer that texture - could have had more soup inside, but overall pretty good - salt and pepper fish: crispy and perfect amount of seasoning, even my husband (who doesn't normally eat fish), liked it. Then he was done. I could tell this was a dish for people who wanted old school Cantonese-American style dishes. But way too fatty and tough. XLB SAMPLER : just ok - Black Truffle tasted more like concentrated mushrooms, not truffle...Trust me. Green veggie was ok. Pork was decent. Spicy was not spicy. KBBq did not taste Korean. The BEST flavor was CRAB. But I just had to try all of them for the cute colors and the novelty, lol! GREEN BEANS: slightly overcooked and oily but delicious- not as crisp and fresh like Din Tai Fung CUCUMBERS: delicious! Bottom line: If I have to pay Din Tai Fung prices, I'd rather eat there. I would say generally 4 star experience, 3 for food, and 4 for service, efficiency, and cleaniness of space. We had a reservation and we able to grab the big table with the lazy Susan/conveyor belt thing. They had a lot of high chairs stacked in a corner and we were able to help ourselves to two of them for the toddlers. Even not moving some of the adult chairs aside, we had plenty of room around this table and that was nice for a change. There was a QR code to pull up the digital menu and order online as well as paper menus. We were able to place our order digitally (but there's a $1 convenience fee for that). The standout dish was probably the pot stickers and we tried the beef/onion one and the pork one. Both were delicious, super juicy with lots of broth inside and the crisp of the skin really good. There was more broth in the pot stickers than the soup dumpling. Since we got the assortment, I tried the original one and it's definitely not as expertly made as DTF. I also enjoyed the veggies fried rice and both bok choy and green beans veggie dishes. The one dish I would not order again was the Ube dessert dumpling. It tasted more like mashed taro and was super bland. Definitely worth visiting again to try other items. read more

my family had a great experience dining at super dumpling for dinner. we were seated at the conveyer belt table, which was exciting at first, but the plates seemed to run into each other and it didn't prove to be super convenient. i was pleased with the amount of vegetarian options! i loved the vegetable fried rice cakes, but the vegetable XLB was just fine for me. my family also enjoyed the chili oil wontons and chow mein, but the korean bbq xlb wasn't great. some hits and some misses, but overall a solid spot for dumplings. the restaurant is very kid friendly, they even give a free toy out for children which was nice to see. parking is also easy to find in the lot :) read more

The weather and rain gave me the perfect excuse I needed to order soups for lunch while working at home and I am sooooooooo happy!! I walked in and the staff said, "Oh, you're back!" That made me very happy!! Having run companies in China for 20+ years, I have really missed great authentic Chinese food and Super Dumpling is as authentic as it gets without having to drive to Convoy and deal with the craziness of parking and traffic and sometimes, mediocre Asian cuisine! My test in the US for potentially a great Chinese restaurant is their Hot and Sour - a great hot and sour soup shares the authenticity in the broth, the heat, the sourness from the Chinese vinegar and the ingredients used. The Hot and Sour soup at Super Dumpling is undoubtedly the BEST I have ever had. The broth is and depth of flavor is superb and I love that the heat and contribution to the flavor profile is derived primarily from white pepper, so, it's an incredible burn. Also, the pork is more like a spam meat versus just shredded pork so that flavor also enhanced the depth of flavor in the broth. The mixture of the vegetables and the egg is perfect. My wife doesn't like any spice so I ordered her the Chicken and Corn Chowder, their version of what most Americans call egg drop soup. This version is really delicious with small pieces of chicken throughout the soup and when the chicken broth is thickened, it ensures every spoonful has some chicken, some corn and some tofu. It's excellent. The food was so delicious for lunch, I'm thinking about going back for dinner - I really want to try their Chongqing Style Spicy Chicken, a dish I would always eat when I was in Chengdu, Sichuan, China for business!! Mixed result. Dumplings: surprisingly bad. Veg xiao long bao were mushy and not even worth eating (which is hard for me to say when I love dumplings). My sweetie felt the same about the pork and chive dumplings. I did like the vegetable rice cake dish. Tasty, generous portion, and the rice cakes were nicely chewy. Chocolate buns were good. We ordered takeout and asked for utensils and condiments, but got home and there were no chopsticks and no sauces at all for the dumplings or anything else. There may be lots of things on the menu that are tasty like the rice cakes were, but the dumplings and xiao long bao were bad tonight. So this new place won't replace Joyee, Dumpling Bar, or Din Tai Fung yet for us, sadly. read more

Restaurant was very crowded on a sunday during lunch time. We had to wait awhile to get seated, we were a large party. The menu is fairly straightforward with dumplings and noodle options. The pan fried dumplings were fine, they didn't stand out to me. This place is pricey but fair given the area. They had some interesting decorations for halloween and played food videos on their tvs. If I am ever in the area again, I'd try their beef noodle soup. read more

Tried the beef noodle soup, which is pretty good. Also tried a stir-fry dish, which was good but expensive, especially given the small portion size, and it doesn't even come with rice. But this is a pretty unique, very authentic Chinese food outpost in an upscale residential area, so I'm not surprised the prices are high. If you're in a pinch come here, but if you have time, I'd rather go to Convoy Street. Did not actually try any dumplings yet, but that's on my list for next time. read more

Found ourselves in this random area so why not tick another dumpling place off the list? We had the Pork Xiao Long Bao (7 pieces for $12.99), Pork & Chive Pan Fried Dumplings (8 pieces for $13.95) and Sweet & Sour Spareribs ($17.95). The dumplings were not exactly pan-fried but were plump -- 4/5. The pork spareribs were not nearly as sticky as the very well-known chains', but they were definitely enjoyable -- 4/5. This unfortunately did not come with any rice, an order which ended up being $3.98, strangely (minus 1 star). The dish that was a bit of a letdown were the XLB, the wrapping which was thick and rather cakey. This made it difficult to puncture a hole to release the hot soup within (minus 1 star). On that note, no soup spoons were even available to achieve this important step! It's kind of a red flag (minus another star). We ended up using some small metal spoon which barely did the job, but I guess it didn't matter since the soup volume was little. The positive was that everything came out hot and fresh. Good-ish food and the dumplings are tasty and its in the name, so maybe stick with that. read more

PLATES OVER DUMPLINGS (3 stars) - FOOD: depends what you order - PRICE: ok - SERVICE: good - AMBIANCE: bright and spacious Came here to try the dumplings and wish I would have saved the money and order a different Chinese plate dish instead. Do not come here expecting it to be second best to DTF, because it doesn't come close. However, the other dishes besides the dumplings could be more comprisable. The menu had so many offerings, so not limit yourself to dumplings/xlbs. The other dumplings that usually would be in crystal wrapping (translucent) are wrapped in the dough looking dumpling wrappers. SIGNATURE XIO LONG BOA (8pc/$19.95) - eight different flavors! This allows you to try different flavors instead of ordering an order of just one flavor. I am going to list this from "decent to dislike" because all were decent and not one stood out to be above decent. ALL lacked soup. The dumpling wrapper was thick and the tops were very chewy. "decent to dislike"... in order... - CHICKEN + CORN (blue): this was the most decent of the batch and it didn't have any fancy ingredient. I liked how it was simple and tasted the best. - PORK (beige): I didn't have high expectations and this was mediocre. The pork was very bland. - CRAB MEAT + SHRIMP (orange): I didn't think I'd like this one because it might be too seafood-y for me but the shrimp dulled down the too crabby taste of the crab meat and it wasn't that bad. - KOREAN (brown): feels like the blank pork was lightly marinated in kbbq marination. Had it had a little more marination to bring up the Korean flavor this might taste better. - TRUFFLE (black): anything truffle taste like truffle. It tasted like the blank pork xls with truffle. not an overkill on truffle flavor but it is present. - SPICY CHICkEN (red): this was not as spicy as I thought but has a little big of heat, however It was a bit oily from the oils that made it spicy. - VEGETABLE (green): this was not good. I toggled between this and crab meat to be the worst and they were equally disliked. This had a bitter taste to it and then an inquiring taste afterwards. my tastebuds love vegetables but this was not for me. - CRAB MEAT (yellow): it's not just this place, I generally do not like crab dumplings as they are too crabby and have that crabby artificial taste that is pungent. Perhaps my tastebuds gone too soft, too American... or I am just not into crab anything unless I'm freshly pulling it out of the shells myself. I think you have got to really love overwhelming taste of seafood to like this dumpling. FRIED PORK CHOP ($10.95) - This was very delicious. It came with two dipping sauces - brown and red, I like the brown better. The red one was sweet and sour sauce. This had nice pork flavor, nicely cut into manageable bite size strips, and a nice crunch to it. The panko crust was fried perfectly and you can tell the oil was fairly new (or changed out) as you cannot taste all the fired items on the menu in one bite. RECOMMEND The restaurant was half full and the majority of orders were the other stuff on the menu such as Chinese plate dishes. Will have to come back and try out other dishes BESIDES dumplings. EXCELLENT AUTHENTIC CHINESE FOOD. If I lived in Carmel area, it would be on my regular rotation to eat. I had the pork wontons in sweet vinegar & chili oil and they were fantastic. I also had sautéed baby spinach and garlic and the chicken with rice cakes. All three of the dishes were delicious! The spinach was fresh, sautéed al dente & wok fried with a fresh garlic. The rice cakes were wok friend with cabbage , bean sprouts & onion in a light brown reduction. They do a brisk takeout service and they have a medium size dining area with a few outside table tables . Highly recommended! read more
