He scanned our ticket and we boarded. The bus was pretty full, so we ended up sitting separately. The above head storage bins are kind of tight, so I had to take something out of my over stuffed backpack to manage to wiggle it in. While my purse sat on my lap. I liked the foot rest and the hook on the handle on the seat in front of me. Trash bags were hung here and there. Looks like they also provided small bottles of water for us, though we had to grab those ourselves. The electric plugs didn't seem to work, but perhaps the ubs plugs in the ceiling did. Our driver was a great communicator. He set expectations so we knew that we had a 20 min rest stop before arriving at Baltimore, and pointed out things to help us to pay attention and to get back to the right bus. He warned us that given current construction that we were sure to arrive later than what our tickets said, and gave us his best eta given the circumstances. Another passenger later commented that the bus bathroom was clean. We kind of ended up being dropped off on a brightly painted bridge in the middle of no where - perhaps on Maryland Ave?, by a bus stop. A short walk from Penn Station.

The transmission was bad, the alignment and suspension were shot, and the bathroom door did not latch. The suspension was so severely degraded that it audibly bottomed out on road bumps, causing motion sickness among multiple passengers. The transmission could not maintain speed on inclines, making the journey slow and stressful for everyone on board. The windshield wipers were so worn they could barely clear rain from the windshield (a serious safety hazard). Overhead storage bins would not latch, risking items falling on passengers, and the lighting inside most of them did not work. The spare tires were stored in a luggage compartment and had dangerously little tread remaining. We paid Rally/OurBus for what we were promised would be a newer luxury coach with ample luggage space and modern amenities. Instead, we got an old bus with no electrical outlets, damaged seat upholstery, and a bathroom that reeked before a single passenger had even used it. They sent us a vehicle that should not be in passenger service. When we sought a refund, we were bounced between Rally/OurBus (the broker) and All Aboard Express (the bus company), and now neither company will return our calls. Save yourself the headache and book elsewhere!

Coming home from an exhausting work out, I stopped at Trader Joe's. Of course, I got so many…read moregroceries that my already depleted body was screaming at me that it would rather die than carry them the three blocks to the bus stop. But once on the bus, I'd be okay, right? Well, if the bus ever came.... forty-five minutes later I asked a driver of the B63 if the B65 was even operating. He assured me it was, so I continued to stand with the other grumpy bus-less people. I told my new friend (after nearly an hour, you WILL make friends), that the bus was coming. His response: " Yah. Every other Mother's Day." I cracked up then did a mini happy dance when the bus pulled up, 52 minutes after I arrived at the stop. I pondered my relationship with the B65 the whole ride home.... yes, it nearly stood me up on a street corner today. But nine out of ten times, it's running great. Not only that, it conveniently goes from the front of my apartment, past several train options (2,3, N,Q,R,F,G, B, D....) on it's happy pathway to Smith Street and and Downtown Brooklyn. Love it or leave it, and be glad it isn't the short bus.

I love you B65, but then again I almost always prefer taking the bus in NYC. Peter Pan or Boltbus,…read moreetc.. to leave the city? No so much, I'd rather crawl. But within NYC, the bus is how I travel. I like to stay above ground. Nothing better than to say to an out-of-town friend, "let's just hop on this here bus", to take them somewhere. A much better way to see the city than taking the subway. When I first moved to Crown Heights, I was psyched to be near the A. But the A is actually 6 annoying, litter-strewn blocks away and the A at 830 in the morning is NOT delightful. So I set off the find alternate ways to get places, which having moved from from the Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy Border (como se dice "train-free" en espagnol), is now a specialty of mine. I discover that walking up Nostrand several blocks brings me to a 3 train, which is convenient, but I find myself feeling scowly for having to go further away from my house first in order to get closer to the city. THEN in an unprecedented turn of events, I was hanging out at the famed Starlite Lounge on Bergen when a bus whooshed by. And it was going...towards downtown! I had found my new love. I'm sorry B38 Limited, you've been replaced (still a sexy second though, dohn worry). Now, the B65, like any NYC MTA bus does have its drawbacks, the most prominent being (as the esteemed Mo P mentioned) sometimes....it just doesn't come. I don't know why. Maybe when the driver calls out sick, they just don't replace him? Maybe there is a traffic jam? I know not. But still, I wait. I refuse to give in. I am a bus loyalist (my girlfriend wants to kill me sometimes though. "But the train's right THERE." She just doesn't understand). My morning commute now consists of me walking one stop to the B65, waiting five minutes while staring at the Starlite looking for signs of life or wondering what building Mo P lives in, reading my book on a comfortably full bus ride, then hopping on the 2/3 at Bergen to get me to Court and Montague. Average trip door-to-door: 25 minutes.

To start my round trip ticket was only $55 dollars which is comparable to other buses that do the DC-NYC route. There was free WiFi, water, access to movies. The driver was very friendly and courteous and ensured that all passengers were respectful of those around them. Lastly, this was the cleanest public bus I've ever been on. The floors were wooden, the seats leather, and the bathroom actually useable without cringing and holding your nose lmao. Despite how amazing the service, and how nice the bus is, people are still gross, so I would recommend bringing wipes and hand sanitizer. A woman had her bare feet all over the arm rest, and another was clipping her toe nails.
