Before Tripper, I had always braved DC traffic to make it to Union Station, so I was stoked when I heard about a bus that picked up in my hometown of Bethesda instead. To start my round trip ticket was only $55 dollars which is comparable to other buses that do the DC-NYC route. There was free WiFi, water, access to movies. The driver was very friendly and courteous and ensured that all passengers were respectful of those around them. Lastly, this was the cleanest public bus I've ever been on. The floors were wooden, the seats leather, and the bathroom actually useable without cringing and holding your nose lmao. Despite how amazing the service, and how nice the bus is, people are still gross, so I would recommend bringing wipes and hand sanitizer. A woman had her bare feet all over the arm rest, and another was clipping her toe nails. read more

Don't even think of using this bus company. Very unreliable and no customer support. We all were left stranded in New York on a Saturday. Disputing charges on credit card. Plus from Bethesda, we all had to wait 40 minutes because the bus driver was late, then he almost got into two accidents as he was speeding driving recklessly. I am filing a complaint with the Department of Transportation (DOT): Bus companies crossing state lines fall under DOT. I used to travel on Greyhound, who owned the terminals. So a stop every two hours was not a big deal on a 12 hour trip. Get off, use restroom, eat, back on the bus. Trip from Bethesda to NYC is 4:30. Driver keeps saying he's not stopping. Ok. Gotta go occasionally. Lordy, the "must sit down only" fixture is a tiny hole with a seat that is bigger than the child size opening below it. For the price you would expect a lot more, but they are just another megabus. I booked a round trip from NYC to Arlington, and they immediately cancelled my return bus to reschedule me on a much less convenient departure for the return trip. The first trip was supposed to be 'luxury' but they downgraded us to a regular cramped coach less than an hour before departure with no refund. Hot, cramped, left late, unresponsive customer service, etc. If you have taken buses before you know the drill, but usually it's half the price. Today I took another trip to NYC from Bethesda. My 8:10 am bus was upgraded to an Elite Tripper bus, much more space and leather seats- nice! There was traffic on 95 in the truck lanes, so our driver, Jerome exited, got into the auto lanes and saved us about 30 minutes of traffic. KUDOS! Tripper Bus has always been a decent trip for us from NYC to DC and back. Never any problems except maybe the wifi or outlets by the seats not working. HOWEVER, their cancellation policy is crap! I have booked over 40 tickets with them in the past 3 years and had to cancel a trip that I booked 24 hours earlier. After the amount of money we have given them, the least they can do is provide us with a full refund. I even explained to their customer service that we were moving out of the city and will not have a need for our $80 credit on our account. I asked them to please consider a one time refund for this uncommon circumstance. They told me "give your credit to a friend"...........that is the WORST customer service I have ever received in my life. TRIPPER BUS IS STEALING MONEY and it is ridiculous. I have to travel to Virginia every couple of months, and when I do I always take Tripper. It's reliable, on time with departures (though not necessarily arrival depending on traffic) and best of all, they don't make stops. The seats aren't the most comfortable, but you don't expect to live in the lap of luxury for a 5-hour trip on less than 30 dollars. I have been talking inter-city buses up and down the east coast for over 10 years, and I've tried pretty much every company you can think of - all of the ones in Chinatown, Bolt, Vamoose, Washington Deluxe, DC2NY, etc. etc. Being on the bus for 2-6 hours sucks no matter who's driving you, even if the seats are comfortable and the bathrooms spotless (rarely true for either). As long as I have to keep visiting family and friends that live 5 hours away from me, I'll keep using Tripper. read more

Really New Yawkers, low star reviews? I'm on a tripper as I'm writing this review, heading south. I originally wanted to take a bolt, but they don't have an Arlington stop. Tripper it is. They were EXACTLY where they said it would be, a convenient 2 min walk from penn station. It's clean, it's quiet and our driver is a complete speed demon. He's awesome. We blew past 3 buses so far on the turnpike. Bye bye, Bolt, dc2ny and vamoose! On the downside, the seats are ungodly small and if someone wants to rain on your parade, they will recline their seat ALL the way back so you barely have room for a book/laptop. The cute little dell d430 that I'm using with a 13in screen just, and I mean JUST comfortably fits on my lap right now. That's okay. I have internet, (albeit slow) and working outlets. I also have a free ticket coming my way. (Score!) I'm pretty solid on my 4 star stance of tripper. Why? Let's compare. I'm traveling 4th of july weekend so tickets for everything are at least 15% more expensive.. Roundtrip: Amtrak tickets: $200 + (The cheapest tix were at 2am for ~$72) Delta Shuttle flights: $200+ Southwest flights: $120+ Tripper bus: $50, regardless of "holiday" weekends. I'm giving Tripper Bus 2 stars because they got me from NYC to Bethesda, Maryland and back safely and in one piece. But I've taken buses to Boston, Jersey Shore and Ontario, Canada and Tripper Bus was by far the disappointing of all of them. My friend, Ingrid S. has taken this bus to this location prior before my going with her - she maintains that it wasn't bad the first time...so I guess they must have been having a bad day - TWICE, both trips...going and coming, different drivers and different issues that really want to make me rate them a 1.5 but I'll do 2 stars until Yelp lets you do halfsies. So I was irritated on the bus going to my destination because the amenities they claimed on their website simply weren't true. There was no complimentary water, no free wi-fi password was announced, no outlets to charge anything, etc. I would be fine without these things had they not been promised to me and everyone else where we purchased our $27 dollar tickets...$27 dollars each way - that's $54 bucks round trip - are outlets and bottled water that expensive these days? I know mi-fi (mobile wifi boxes) aren't that expensive and most buses have one aboard...unless you're on a Tripper Bus, apparently. We also had no rest stop and thus my friend and I got to Bethesda absolutely famished with 8-9 hours of no food because we didn't think to buy sandwiches since most long bus rides stop somewhere halfway and her first time using Tripper she says they did. This driver didn't - clearly he didn't need to use the bathroom or eat during his 4 hour drive which turned into like 6.5...he drove like Mrs. Daisy...but at least we were safe and it was raining sooooo fine #eyeroll. Coming back to NYC, we got water! Huzzah! That was nice because it was like 95 degrees and warm water was just what I needed. Warm because the cases of bottled water were out sitting on the sidewalk, in the sweltering sun way before our bus arrived (and then departed late...not a biggie, but just sayin'). Also, coming back the right row of the rather crowded bus had electrical outlets that work, but the left side of the bus did not despite the driver restarting the bus (at my request) after our 20 minute stop at a Jersey Station - nope, still didn't work. Of course I was stuck on the side without electricity so as far as my experience was concerned, I had no electrical outlet on both of my Tripper trips. Unacceptable. Had an emergency occurred I would not have had a phone because I didn't conserve battery power BECAUSE TRIPPER SAID I WOULD BE ABLE TO CHARGE IT ON THE BUS. Lies. Again. Now let's talk about our driver on the return trip (the one back to NYC), his name was "Coach Avery". He introduced himself by saying we should address him as "Coach", "Coach Avery", "Avery" and anything else we called him he would stop the bus until we apologized. Haha, funny - wish I had a phone to play with so I could pass the 6 hour drive back. It was evident immediately that this guy was a bit off his rocker, albeit in a humorous sort of way - I mean he also forbade us from "doing number two" on his bus. Not sure if he was joking or not given his delivery (trust me, you had to be there, lol) but I didn't take any chances. At least Coach Avery drove quickly and was able to maneuver through traffic and rogue cars with ease thanks to lots of (probably unnecessary) honking and an itchy break foot. I mean seriously - this guy loooooooooooved hitting his breaks. My friend even commented that she felt like she was on a roller coaster - feeling like you're on a roller coaster isn't fun when you're on a 6 hour ride through Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and finally good ol' NYC. They try to set themselves apart, like by providing free bottled water. My last driver even bought us sodas! Nonetheless, Tripper is like all the other buses. You get perks for repeated trips, like free tickets, but I would only expect so much with a $25 price tag. After searching on Yelp for all the options to go from NYC - DC (Mega, Bolt, DC2NYC, Amtrak), I decided to Google it and see if I missed any. And sure enough, Tripper Bus was the second one to pop up. It was perfect because I needed to get to Arlington and the bus only made two stops - Bethesda and Arlington. Booked my reservation online ($25 one way) and got my confirmation within the same day. Perfect. Then fast forward to the day before my trip. I decided I'd rather get in a couple of extra hours in VA than NYC, so I called to change my departure time. Even though the bus was almost at capacity, they were nice enough to accommodate me. I had no trouble finding the bus on 34th (right across from H&M), although the bus DID arrive 20 minutes late. Apparently there was a parade going on and they had trouble getting around. Getting on the bus took some time too, since everyone basically just crowded around the steps and pushed and shoved each other to get 'checked-in.' Good thing I'm skinny because I was able to squeeze my way to the front and got on within a couple of minutes. They handed out waters once we all boarded (nice touch) and provided wifi users with a laptop tray. My only complaint was that the drapes didn't work on my side, which of course, was the side the sun was hitting. But other than that, the trip was smooth and we arrived at Arlington exactly 4.5 hours later, just like the website said. read more

The driver's are so unprofessional and drive dangerously they have no concern for anyone in their path and i've seen pedestrians in NYC have to literally jump out of the way to narrowly miss being run over by these buses. TRIPPER BUS LOST MY BAG AND NEVER REIMBURSED ME I took a bus from NY to Arlington on Tripper Bus. When I got off the bus, my bag was missing. From my conversation with the driver, it appeared that my bag was in the "Bethesda" section and so was unloaded at Bethesda. However, the driver left without checking to see that all bags were picked up, and so my bag was left at Bethesda. The worst part was, TRIPPER DID NOT TAKE OWNERSHIP. I called, and they never called back. I emailed, and they never replied. Instead of trying to help and/or reimburse me for my loss, they simply hid out of cowardice. I left from Arlington to NY on Friday and it was a great trip. The bus was on time, clean, the seats were comfy. Everything was great except the driver. RUDE is an understatement! He nastily demanded that the passengers received their bottle of water now because they wouldn't get anything from him in Bethesda. Took a bus from NYC to Maryland recently . The driver I got was nice and gave us all water. He then explained the rules and that we all had outlets which I was relieved about because my phone dies quick. Seats were clean and comfortable and price was great! I think I paid almost $30. We even got to Md a little early! Wish I could have taken it back from D.C but I took eastern bus back to ny and it kinda sucked. *I noticed upon leaving the bus that this lady's toddler threw up on the bus. She just left the throw up there and didn't even attempt to clean it up. That was so rude and disgusting, for the next set of passengers. People should have more sense than that. read more

Within the past year I've taken tripper a lot at least 1 a month. Recently, it has been extremely disappointing. Seats have become closer together, I'm 5'7"and barely have room and the seats barely could recline. The bathroom wreaked from the moment we got on the bus so we had to deal with 4 hours of such disgusting smells. They have also raised their prices. I'm always impressed with Tripper. I have been doing bus travel between New York and DC before there was anything, when it was just sketchy Chinatown buses. I was happy to have the mega bus and bolt bus lines, but I'm overjoyed to have Tripper. They always have really friendly staff waiting at the location, and it's always the same person, so you know they know their stuff. it's not some disgruntled employee waiting for their shift to end. The bus is almost always there 5-15 minutes early so you can get on and find a seat, they give you water, the bus drivers help you with your bags, and they drive safely but quickly. WHAT ELSE COULD YOU WANT!?? I've been early or on time with every trip I've taken (except if there's terrible traffic on a holiday weekend, obviously - no bus is going to be win that race). Took this bus from midtown to Arlington for a conference in DC. Round trip cost was $55 which got me free Wi-Fi, electrical outlets in the seat, a water bottle, and a clean bus ride. There's a bathroom that is similar to a porta-potty, but it was surprisingly clean and provided a great opportunity to practice my squatty potty stance and balance. The drivers are a bit aggressive, but coming from NYC, I am used to that. Our driver even alternated his route when traffic was projected. We arrived within 30 minutes of the estimated time. Also, you arrive near the metro in Arlington and only a 15 minute ride into DC- all for less than a one-way Amtrak ticket. I will definitely use this service again. read more

A few years ago my friend told me she took Tripper Bus to NYC. I said, don't you mean Vamoose? She said, no, I mean Tripper. If you don't read to the bottom - free water, internet, outlets, speedy ride, good service, and a reward program for free trips!!!! I've been a customer for over two years . My sister is a Tripper die hard also and I have recommended this company to everybody and anybody who will listen. Location - Super convenient for me. Buses that go to Chinatown or Dupont or even Amtrak to Union Station are a pain for someone who needs to get to Bethesda / Potomac. It even drops you off at the Bethesda metro station (trains, metrobuses) and within walking distance of every bar and restaurant in Bethesda. Bus Condition - Buses are typically in good condition and most of the time the outlets and internet work. Occasionally this hasn't been the case but Tripper tries to send their riders an email ahead of time to get the word out. Drivers and Length of trip - Some drivers are chatty, some are not. ALL drivers go so fast you wonder if the bus is flying. I've taken the 8 am bus and the 7:30 pm bus. These folks fly! Customer Service - I have had to contact them in the past and they were very accommodating and apologetic. I've never broken down on the road (knock on wood - I'm travelling tonight) but I've had those rides that stink. They don't have a case of water or the internet isn't working. Or where 495 or the Turnpike are COMPLETELY shut down and there is nowhere to go. I am always impressed by the knowledge their drivers have at how to ditch, what roads are detours, etc. Late December, there was a 40+ mile backup to the Delaware Memorial Bridge (going south).I was on the 5 pm bus and we were told the 10 am bus was STILL on the road because of this shut down. Our driver detoured through Delaware to the Eastern Shore of MD. We took the Bay Bridge to 95 and made it to Bethesda in close to 4 hours. INCREDIBLE. I didn't mean to write this much. I'm sorry. Took Tripper bus from Bethesda to NYC on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Traffic was majorly congested so driver chose a few detours to avoid some backups. It took about 6 hours to arrive. We took bus back on Sunday--it took roughly 4.5 hours. This is the affordable and hassle-free way to go -- leave the driving, tolls and parking fees in NY to others. The bus seats are comfortable; includes bottled water and free wifi; electrical outlets between each seat; overhead storage for small personals; cargo storage for luggage0 underneath. The drivers and attendants were courteous and professional. I like to arrive a minimum of 1/2 hour before departure to be on the departure time safe side and to board comfortably. read more

Just took another trip to NY via the Tripper and once again it was flawless. I just don't understand why the others (Megabust and Bolt) can't get it this right. I've used Tripper for over a year now and I go to NYC all the time. This bus is always on time, always clean, has outlets and wifi and free water... The wifi is slow but seriously, you're on a bus...do you expect fiber optic speeds? Here's another thing the other companies can learn from Tripper. Get attendants that give a crap. The lines are always orderly and organized first come first served. When you have someone there controlling the situation it takes away a huge stressful part of the experience. It's nice to know there aren't going to be any ridiculous confrontations between passengers. The drivers also make the experience and I've never had a bad one at Tripper. Our guy today, Larry is the best. He gets on the mic immediately and sets the tone for the ride. He's hilarious when he gets people to put their phones on vibrate because "Ain't nobody special on this bus." He means it too, first phone to go off he gets on the mic and calls them out. So sad that the general public doesn't have an ounce of decency left that they have to be told exactly how to be respectful of others but it's true. Did I mention that my ticket going to NY was $7.50? Coming home was $25 for a round trip total of $32.50. Had I been dumb enough to drive myself up to NY the tolls would have been more than that. I've traveled with Bolt Bus, MegaBus, Greyhound, DC to NY, and Vamoose. This is a borderline oxymoron, but I'm a bus connoisseur. I recently rode with Tripper Bus for the first time and was completely impressed by the customer service. Both times I have used this company, I had the Polish bus driver - John. His personality was absolutely delightful. He checked in multiple times throughout the trip to see if the temperature was okay for all the riders. He also gave out candy! I LOVE CANDY! 2 stars bc this bus made me feel tall. -3 stars is bc I felt that way due to the EXTREME proximity of the seat in front of me. I literally couldn't put my feet in front of me and I couldn't put a laptop on my lap. I had to angle it downwards bc of the other persons seat 3 inches from my face. I'm 5'8". Boo. This was the most uncomfortable bus ride I've ever been on. Wifi was slow, borderline useless. Outlets were 'on the wall by the window seat', but no one ever found one. Something positive about the trip? The staff was cool. Crackin' some jokes and passing out waters. Check-in was easy as well. Note: This was a Gunter bus, which is 'European'. Terrible. I planned to go home to DC for my niece's second birthday and the Tripper was the only early enough bus to make the 1 pm party (8:30 AM). I woke up at 6 AM, got to the bus stop at 7:30 AM and there was no bus. I figured it just was not there yet, but then I waited until 8:30 and NO ONE SHOWED UP! Earlier they said they were monitoring conditions (the weather was bad--windy and it snowed the night before), but I never got ANY emails! How can they just not show up and not let me know that the 8:30 bus was not running? I also tried calling their office multiple times--no answer. I am very dissapointed in this bus service and their customer service relations. I recommend if you are going to the DMV area, to take the Vamoose. I have traveled with Tripper Bus enough times that I felt as if I could give an accurate description of my experiences. The buses were always on time and left on time, bathrooms were cleaner than any other bus services I've taken - all around a good experience. However, I am not feeling this way after my trip this past Friday (September 21st). My bus was supposed to leave NYC at 5:30 pm - we were traveling to Bethesda. We ended up leaving at 5:42 pm and it wasn't the fact that we left 12 minutes late that was really bothering me; it was the reason why. A small group of teenage girls boarded the bus and I overheard them talking about their concerns for their other friends who were running late. As it got closer to 5:30, they started panicking and wondering how to deal with the situation. One of the girls approached the young woman collecting tickets outside and asked if we could wait for her friends running behind, to which she AND the bus driver agreed. Mind you, the late friends were not even close to the bus location. This was a huge inconvenience and annoyance to me and I could tell it was bothering other passengers. In my opinion, what bothered me wasn't even the fact that we left late - NYC traffic was horrible regardless so even if we left at 5:30 it would've taken a good deal of time to actually get out of the city. It was the fact that we waited around for people who didn't even have a chance at making it on time. And that we waited around for people in general. So next time if I board the bus and I see 10 empty seats and it's expected to be a full bus, are we going to wait around for those 10 people? Next time, if my friend is running late, should I just tell her not to worry and that the bus driver will hold up the entire bus just for her? If you know that you need to be somewhere at a specific time and that requires dealing with NYC traffic at 5pm on a Friday, plan accordingly. I am extremely disappointed in the way this situation was handled by Tripper Bus. If my ticket says '5:30 pm' I expect we leave at that time. Of course, there may be special circumstances in which that can't happen, but I couldn't believe we left late due to a girl requesting that we wait around for her friends. I could hear the group of girls even saying throughout "There's no way they're going to make it" or "They're so far but let's see if they have a chance." So why hold up an entire bus? And to make things even worse, they saved seats for these late friends and would not allow any other passengers to sit next to them. I understand that's not really in Trippers' control, but the whole situation was completely out of line. Also, the internet never works! read more

I'd also consider myself a bus connoisseur, I've easily taken over 20 trips from the past 2 years between New York and Washington DC and I can tell you Tripper Bus is consistently superior to both Megabus and Boltbus. The staff is always more attentive and helpful, they even give you water for every ride. I personally am surprised if everything on a megabus or boltbus goes to plan (i.e. working outlets, wireless internet), I'd be surprised if anything didn't go to plan on Tripper bus. Some reviews below talk about solo experiences where something went wrong.
