You'll be bored if you have a reading level above that of a third grader. I could do a lap around nurbürgring in a Ford Focus faster than they can ask 1 question. This company reads so slow that I would contemplate finishing an audio book during the downtime between questions. Additionally, everyone cheats. I called out a team for cheating at Belching Beaver and no joke, the host says "you need to stop." Dawg. THEY need to stop. THEY're cheating. Two stars bc trivia is always nice. For example, he strategically chooses songs and manipulates the environment with clues to help us answer trivia questions. Why is Sunset Trivia 5-stars? We've been playing for so long and believe that the format and the quality of questions are top-notch. I've played bar trivia through several other trivia "vendors" like Geeks Who Drink and even some bars will write their own questions like Shakespeare Pub. These are not nearly as high-quality with questions that aren't deducible or fun to debate, or the answers are verifiably incorrect (looking at Shakespeare). During the pandemic, our trivia group even started hosting and writing our own trivia games. We got pretty good at it and use Sunset Trivia's logic of focusing on questions where you don't know the answer, but you can deduce the answer through the process of elimination. Best combination wrestling announcer and trivia host of Cuban descent in the game who currently resides in Southern California. He really goes that extra mile with his song choices to make it worth going every week and dropping $50 apiece on food and drinks. Sunset Trivia is amazing as it is a good way to meet new people and to have fun at a bar! Frank and I have enjoyed playing Trivia at the various bar venues of Bluefoot (of course), 98 Bottles and the Belching Beaver. All the venues are fun and so are the other teams. I only go to bars when I want to watch a good sports game or if I am meeting up with friends. However, Sunset Trivia changed that as we love to sit and play along. The hosts, Brian and Fernando are so nice and fun. They really know how to manage a crowd and make the event fun. If you are new to San Diego, don't know anyone yet, look up Sunset Trivia and find a venue that suits you. You don't have to drink alcohol to participate and some of the venues allow you to bring in your own food, like Bluefoot and Belching Beaver. There are venues all over town, I highly recommend it! :) If you don't know anyone, just walk up to a team, especially ours "Boo Poo" and we would love to have you join us. My friends and I without fail always attend trivia night at Nick's at the Beach Wednesday night with Sunset Trivia. We accidentally stumbled upon it on the opening night of football and have been coming back every week. It's a fun way to hang out with your friends, use competitiveness in a good way and work that brain. You never know what kind of questions you are going to get and even if you get a category you think you are going to own, odds are good something will happen and it won't work out, but hey! that's trivia! Our host, Joey, it's pretty entertaining and has some great 1 liners he loves to throw in when deemed fit. It's great to see the same teams come back every week and compete for bar money. Last week was our first money place and we came in 3rd! Definitely will recommend this to more friends because it's a great way to relax after a long day at work. read more

My friends and I love going to trivia! The only reason Sunset Trivia does not get 5 stars is because of the cheaters! We attend at Nick's at the Beach, which has a patio. This patio attracts all the cheaters. The SAME teams win every week, and guess where they all sit? In the corners and on the patio. Perfect cell phone Wikipedia checking locations! Some teams get the shots questions right on the nose and aren't even excited about it. I know if I randomly guessed that a baby elephant weighs 2,395 lbs and was right I'd be elated! This takes the fun out of the game! The moderators should be more on top of the REAL cheaters instead of yelling at and accusing the people who always come in 7th place of cheating. If the game were actually fair everyone would have a much better time :) read more

I completely suck at trivia, so I've been surprised at how much fun I've had the last two times I've been to Sunset events. The questions are surprisingly hard- I'm a PhD student in molecular epidemiology- and I couldn't answer a single one of their science questions! Seems like the safest bet is to form a large party, to increase your knowledge base for the more obscure questions. I can't speak from the business-side about the company, but from a business perspective, I don't know why you WOULDN'T want a trivia night for your venue- these events are always packed, and no one seems shy in browsing the drink and food menus! I'd highly recommend Sunset Trivia to anyone- if you're single, join a table, if not- fight for house bragging rights. Looking forward to the next event! read more

Full disclosure, I know the founder because I saved his life in Colombia. No joke. But his life debt to me aside, I say that Sunset trivia is the best I've been to. You get a free shot round. The places he holds trivia are always top notch with good beer and good food specials. His questions are fair by combining enough brainy and non brainy trivia to keep all your friends interested. Sunset leaves plenty of time to chit chat in between questions and doesn't have so many questions as to make you want to go home and pass out from a brain fry. Just something fun to do with friends on a weeknight besides watching tv or staring at TV's at a bar. I'm an HP purist and I was really disappointed in the Crimes of Grindewald movie. So when your highest weighted questions are about Chupacabras and magical cats from the Crimes movie, I'm going to be pretty bummed. The event specifically says that the trivia is related to the books or the movies. By 9 o'clock, sad and disheartened, we left. We didn't even stay for the last question. He's super fun and friendly and just really knows how to keep the crowd entertained. He's got a great personality and you can tell he likes what he does. We accidentally found Sunset Trivia at PB Alehouse over a year ago, and have been hooked ever since! Since then, we've tried out several of their venues and they're all awesome. The questions are hard enough that it takes 4 of us (pretty educated) people to come up with any un-embarrassing answer, but not so obscure that you spend all night shrieking WHO WOULD KNOW THIS CRAP. THAT'S NOT EVEN A THING. WHO WRITES THESE DAMN QUESTIONS. The teams that have become "regulars" start a friendly rivalry and all start to get to know each other so it's a great way to make friends and get out of the house on a weeknight!! read more

What else is there to say about Sunset Trivia but that it rocks! They have trivia nights at a variety of places around SD, so if one venue isn't your cup of beer (who drinks tea at trivia?), another place will be. And they seem to be adding venues every week so it's always easy to find a place and time that works. The owner/host Brian, is super personable - always talks to people afterwards - and the other MCs are great too. The questions are just the right amount of tough, covering a ton of subjects. The games are always interesting; even if you're out of the money at the beginning you can make up a lot of ground towards the end. I've done trivia through a couple other groups in SD just because they happened to be at the bar I was at and I can honestly say Sunset is the only one I seek out. read more

I am updating based on experiences since my last post. My love of trivia kept me from boycotting and the majority of my experiences since have been positive. It is now made clear you can only buy tickets to one venue/night per event. If you like trivia, odds are the event will be good. However, hosts are independent contractors sooo it can fluctuate. I've played several theme nights since (Parks and Rec, The Office, Friends, Harry Potter, Disney, Seinfeld, and Elf) and most have been good. Typically, you can show up to the venue 10-15 min before start time and have a table and seats. (Elf in PB being the annoying exception). I have not seen the host from my original post since, which I would say was what made me deduct most stars. It is also frustrating when you want to do an event, buy tickets, then if it sells out, typically another event is added. Often times, in my experience the new date or venue is often more convenient than the original, but there is no easy way to exchange tickets. I get the predicament they are in, just a customer perspective. This would be more of a 3.5, but I'll grade on a curve here. I'm impressed the owner reached out to explain and try and rectify things, and overall enjoy most events! Come up with an exchange within events and have more consistency (at least with seating... or if it will differ from most events where seats won't be guaranteed, make it clear) and I'd make my review a 5 star. The Rail and American Junkie are my favorite places that typically host events, never seating issues. read more

Sunset trivia is the best bar trivia option, period. There's no big administrative process to join and participate, you show up, grab a sheet of paper and you're in. Chase at Bub's in PB is the best host-- his pacing is on, sense of humor on point, and he genuinely seems to like trivia. There's no charge btw, so for a nice night of drinks with friends, consider finding a bar with specials the same night as trivia.....a winning combination. COST: $0 Prizes range from 20-50$ for winners. An "end of season tournament" is held and prizes range up to $1,000. Their website has all you need as far as locations, and times. read more

Totally unorganized trivia company. They promised us posters and to promote the event, which just didn't happen. Posters showed up a few days before though we planned the first event weeks before. The first time they showed, they showed up ON THE WRONG DAY!While at our place of business, they checked the house sound. When they came back a week or so later for the correct date, their cables and sound wouldn't work. After a great deal of confusion, they produced their own amplifier which they then claimed they normally charge an additional $60 to bring to a site. Unbelieveable. They agreed to do the shows for $100.00 each because that's "what it cost" them just to show up... for an hour and 1/2 really? Look elsewhere! read more

This review is really a complaint about a particular trivia host, and hopefully not indicative of this organization as a whole. I invited some friends to a Sunset Trivia night at California Tap Room on Wed. 12/27 after having a fun time at a similar event at Negociant on Tues 12/12 (both located in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego). Throughout the game, our trivia host (whose name I don't recall but reminded me of an unfunny Seth Meyers) made a couple of disparaging remarks about particular questions, that at one point also began to bleed into commentary about trivia contestants as well. First, when an answer to a question turned out to be Shakira, he decided it was important to tell us how annoying and unlikable she was. That by itself was weird and unnecessary, but whatever. Later, when a question about the names of Beyonce's twin babies came up, he said that this was by far the "stupidest question of the evening," and that "whoever got this right in your group probably won't have anything else to contribute to the game." (Sidenote: My friend and trivia group member, who immediately knew the answer to this question, has a master's degree in anthropology and is a science teacher, so she did in fact make a lot of contributions) Now, if you're going to insert your irrelevant personal opinions into the game and make negative comments about the questions or the audience itself, you need to fully lean in to making that your shtick. In other words, you better talk some s**t about ALL the questions, my man, and not just the ones that happen to be about women of color. That way, you'd still be unfunny and a bad host, but at least you wouldn't be wading so far into sexist and racist territory. Alternatively, you could try not inserting your rambling personal opinions into your hosting style and we'd all be better off. Moreover, trivia is, by definition, "trivial", which is something you wouldn't think a trivia host would need explained to him, but here we are. A question about Shakira's new album or Beyonce's babies is no more or less relevant than a question about the 2017 College Football Playoff teams (incidentally, all questions that our team got right). I sincerely hope that Sunset Trivia wants to create a fun, welcoming environment for all of its participants. I do want to say that our host at Negociant on Tues. 12/12 was great. Despite facing technical difficulties, she made us want to come back for another trivia night, which is how we ended up at California Tap Room this week. However, after our experience there, I'm now hesitant to spend my time at another one of these events and would probably leave if I saw this guy hosting again. Please try to do better. read more

I can't write a more positive review about Sunset Trivia. I recently hosted an event to benefit the San Diego Blood Bank, with Brian from Sunset Trivia acting as our trivia host. He was AWESOME! Everything about the trivia game was perfect: very professional, with questions and categories to please everyone. The weighted question system makes it possible for almost all teams to compete on a level playing field. There were tons of hard questions, but only hard enough that you kicked yourself for not quite remembering the answer. Nothing extremely obscure, which was great. Brian kept the energy up with great music in between questions. Everyone had fun, and there was lots of good-nautred trash talking between teams. I highly recommend trying out one of their trivia nights if you haven't already! read more

Tonight's trivia at the Regal Beagle was one of the most drawn-out, arduous experiences of my entire life. A game with only 19 questions took nearly 3 hours! The facilitator seemed to have no idea what she was doing, and couldn't pronounce many of the words in the questions (including the esoteric word we were expected to spell). Yeah, the questions were tough, which usually isn't a problem, but many were very convoluted, and when there's a 5+ minute gap between each question, things get pretty miserable. read more

Sunset Trivia is solid. I almost gave this a four star. I was teetering on the brink. I've been a frequent patron of Sunset Trivia nights and will probably continue going to their trivia nights. If you like trivia, check it out. Maybe I selected 3 stars because I prefer west coast style trivia over east coast. This is East Coast style trivia. You wager points for each questions. There are two halves of about 3 each containing 3 questions. There is about 2 minutes in between each question and you turn the question in after each answer. This is a different format than I am used to. In typical "West Coast" style trivia, a round consists of 5 or more questions in one category. Great things: 1. The bars that do it do it every week. It's only real trivia if it's every Tuesday or every Wednesday, etc. None of this every 8th full moon alternating vernal equinox B***S***. I am sick and tired of people talking about Shakespeare's trivia night as being "the best." If it's that good, why is it only once a month? What the hell? (Shakespeare's is a great place. Don't let my bitterness for their trivia schedule assuage you.) 2. It has a social format. There's a ton of time in between each question so it's great for groups who want to hang out and talk and not deal with answering a question every 5 seconds. 3. There are varying times. Trivia is usually too early for me as a non-government worker whose 9-5 is actually 8:00-6:30 minimum. Start times go as late as 8PM, which is perfect. The Bar Key is my personal favorite, with 8PM Tuesday trivia. Things I'm not crazy about: 1. There's not that many questions in a night, something like 18-19 total. I'm used to 5-7 rounds of 5-7 questions each. It's great for a social trivia night, but there is less actual trivia. 2. There aren't real categories. Typically, in West Coast trivia, a round is a category, let's say: Classic Rock guitarists. There are 5-7 questions in that category. This keeps it interesting. Sunset trivia doesn't do this. The questions are mostly random with little flow. This has pros and cons, I like the categories, but if you know nothing about a category, it can be torture. Sunset's format prevents that and it's easier for newcomers. 3. The questions and rounds aren't that creative. I like trivia nights with picture rounds, name that tune, etc. Check it out if you're looking for a trivia night. Another big plus about Sunset Trivia is that their website is accurate unlike 90% of the bars in San Diego. read more
