The Sunset Club is a wonderful beach bar that has a great casual vibe, friendly service and a flavorful menu with creative takes on beach classics. During this visit, we had nicely crafted mojitos, good selection of beer and wine. The tuna poke has fresh tuna, sesame, just cut jalapeños, fresh spices and sticky rice - nicely done! The fish sandwich had a healthy portion of fish, house sauce, lettuce, on a really nice brioche bun. This evening, the sunset was brilliant! My friend and I spent the day in the downtown Newburyport area, then biked over to Plum Island. We worked up and appetite and since this place was packed and high energy, we decided to grab dinner here. They do have a host sitting parties down, but there are also standing areas, self-seating tables, and seats by the bar. The menu includes a good variety of food items, but ultimately the Baja smashburger caught my attention. We placed our order at the counter by the bar, then waited for the food to come to our table. After about 15 minutes, the food arrived. The burger was about $20 and came with the burger and chips. We were unsure if chips meany fries or actual potato chips and unfortunately, it was the latter. The smashburger was good. The patties (2) were smashed a bit, but it didn't have much of the signature crispy, caramelized crust. It came with white cheese melted onto the patties, shredded lettuce, tortilla chips, and Baja mac sauce. I wish the brioche buns were toasted and smashed with the patties on the grill but thankfully the bread was soft and tasted fresh. There was a good amount of mac sauce, to help glue everything together. To my surprise, the tortilla chips were my favorite part. They added texture and slightly more salt. I had a bite of my friends fried white fish tacos but they were a little too fishy for me. I would recommend this place for the vibes and especially for large groups looking for a place to eat and have a good time. They don't accept reservations, but it seems like people are coming in and out constantly, so tables are usually available. They do have a moderate-sized parking lot (free of charge) in the back and when we were they, they had someone ushering cars to empty spots. read more

I didn't know you could make a dry smash burger. It tasted almost like a bad backyard burger burned up by ya dad. Only good thing about this place is the drinks and the view. Although it's a little hard to enjoy the beautiful sunset when a bunch of instagram loving yuppies are getting up and taking selfies every two seconds. Like they've never seen a sunset. read more

Stopped by The Sunset Club for the first time on a Monday around 4, so it wasn't too busy, which was perfect. We sat out on the deck and the view was amazing such a great spot to just relax and enjoy the afternoon. Our waitress was super friendly and on top of everything. My wife had the fried fish sandwich and it was delicious...crispy, flavorful, and cooked just right. I tried the lobster roll with lemon aioli (around $45) and it was definitely worth it. Super fresh and the chips on the side were actually really good too. Great first visit overall. Can't wait to go back when it's a bit livelier to check out the vibe at sunset! read more

If you happen to be in NewburyPort, Mass a short drive to Plum Island and a bite to eat at Sunset Club is worthy. Not a particularly great sunset when we attended but staff was friendly and attentive. If you don't mind being around those vacationing or have second homes or primary homes on Plum Island-it has a local feel. Food and drinks were ok-nothing special but adequate. This is my third time here-I can't go a summer without at least one stop at the Sunset Club! It reminds me of a restaurant you would see in the Keys with the fun vibe of good music, sand between your toes and a cocktail in hand. It's only open May-October since it is 3/4 out in open space. There is something here for everyone here! There are plenty of outdoor activities on the sand to keep your kids busy...but as the signs gently remind, watch and mind your kids, this isn't a daycare center. It's a perfect spot for beach goers to end their day and catch a lovely Plum Island sunset. Perfect for the 'It's 5 o'clock somewhere' crowd with 1 main bar and 2 smaller bars throughout the sand. There is one main bathroom (WC) in the covered part of the restaurant which will often have a line, but there are also 3 port o'potties tucked behind one of the bars with plenty of signs directing you there. It's a beach joint on an island, I appreciate that they are mindful and respectful of the environmental choices being made. Now, onto the beverages and food! We ordered some bar drinks at the main bar while we waited for our table. My only complaint was that the cocktails are served in plastic cups-I know it fits the casual setting and if you're walking around the grounds, you don't want to risk breaking a glass with kids underfoot, but consider other options-like copper or tin type mule mugs. While at the bar, we got to chatting with the very friendly bartender who it turns out is one of the owners. We were seated in less than the 30 minutes we were originally told would be our wait time. Once seated we ordered 2 Sun Cruisers and the shrimp aguachile and shared the fish tacos and the poke bowl. The aguachile was a fresh salad consisting of shrimp, cucumbers, tomatoes and corn. Summer on a plate! I was given a choice on the fish for the tacos, fried or grilled. I chose the grilled. They were very tasty with a tangy sauce, chunks of pineapple and a nice crunch of the cabbage. The poke bowl was great with fresh chunks of tuna over sticky rice with edamame beans and sesame seeds, and other julienned veggies. Our server was super pleasant and attentive! All the servers seemed to have smiles in their faces -like they really enjoyed their jobs working in this beautiful laid back environment! Can't wait to return! read more

But the place is cool, nice staff, has a great view and they make one of the best burgers around. The location is all this place has to offer. Food was subpar, drinks not bad from a taste perspective but not even sure there was alcohol in our alcoholic drinks. The biggest disappointment was the way we were treated by staff. We have 3 kids, who that night were actually behaving and yet every encounter by the staff was a negative one about our kids. The weather was perfect and we were seated right away on Saturday night after getting there around 8pm. Our waitress gave us advice on what to order and everything was fresh and presented in a creative way. My friend, who had been there a few times, shared the 3 orders with me. I'm pescatarian, but there are plenty of options for something everyone would enjoy. Beachy island vibe with fun music playing and attentive staff. Not a great experience, hoping we caught them on an off day. We came around 1 pm, it was hot and already pretty crowded with the lunch crowd. A band was tuning up and started playing reggae and rock covers. A nice vibe, but they were just very disorganized and the food wasn't good. My sweet tea had two dead bees in the ice which was pretty yucky. My wife's corona came without the lime. The fish tacos had decent salsa but the fried battered fish was so flavorless it felt like we were choking it down. We tried ordering the street corn but were told they were "out of corn" an hour after opening for the day, in August when New England corn is everywhere. Had to flag down help to get silverware after our food was served. It was just that kind of day. Seems like a nice place to go if you just want to get a drink and watch the sunset--recommend not coming if you're hungry. read more

There were people sitting inside, but we were the only ones outdoors, so we chose to sit at the adirondack chairs by the fire pit. I've been waiting for this to open and it did not disappoint. The vibe was cool and the staff were great. The bartenders were very helpful and even though they were extremely busy, they still made time to check in. The food was tasty but for the price, the portions were small. I had the duck empanadas, street corn and fish tacos. The empanada filling didn't fill out the entire empanada and the fish tacos (2 per order), had a "fish stick" size of fish in each tortilla. The tortillas were large which only made the fish seem even smaller! At $18, I would have expected a little more. The street corn was tasty and had a great kick to it! Bottom line: I'll definitely go back but won't go there hungry! read more

Nice concept, but poor execution all around We had high hopes for this venue. We pulled in and found a packed parking lot and the outdoor restaurant looked like it would be lots of fun. Many different styles of seating to choose from, cornhole, firepits, etc... And of course, a view of the sun about to set looking west. Looked like we were in for a good time at a beach bar. Unfortunately all down hill from there. It took some time for our waiter to arrive, but the place was hopping and almost everybody is short staffed. We placed our drink order and cocktails finally arrived. They were tasty, but frankly they were weak and the cups were largely ice. We were very specific about our order, and chose the empanadas from the "To Start" portion of the menu, and said we would have those to start, and then for our dinner, we would have the Fish tacos and Vieja bowl, listed in the "Mains" portion of the menu. I was surprised that a runner quickly appeared minutes later with all of our food, dropped everything and rushed off. Clearly, our waiter fired the entire order at once. I'm always bothered by this because you have to choose to enjoy your appetizer and let your meal get cold, or eat your dinner and let your app get cold. Our waiter walked by a few times, seemed to notice but did not stop to check, and I finally made it a point to get his attention. I explained that I did not expect appetizers and entrees to be served at the same time. He then said "We do not course meals here". OK, well it would have been nice if that was mentioned when I ordered, and I would have coursed my own meal. Secondly if the restaurant will not course your food, then that should be explained on the menu and it should not be divided into sections labeled "To start", when that is not how the food will be served. We were then ignored for the rest of our dinner. Our server brought the check and said he removed the appetizer from the menu, a nice gesture but I rather pay for my meal and have proper service. I can't comment on the empanadas, as I did not eat them and chose to eat my dinner instead. The Rioja bowl was bland with a moderate amount of meat and I can't be sure, but the rice seemed to be instant/converted rice, not real rice. The fish taco had a nice crisp coating, but was a very small portion. Overall very underwhelming food. I get the whole pandemic thing, but it is becoming an overused excuse for bad service and poor management. Although a fun looking venue, unfortunately I can't recommend. If you do go, I recommend sticking with a bottled beer, skip the food, enjoy the view and then go to a restaurant that knows how to serve food properly. read more

Stellar spot w/ incredible views and an overall fun time. It seems so far that the complaints are all about the weather and have nothing to do with the establishment. The frozen margarita was shockingly tasty. Usually, I feel like the pre-made type cocktails can get watery and typically aren't flavorful nor strong, but that was the exact opposite here. The food was also quite good and fitting for the space: a nicely seasoned and well-cooked piece of fish in the tacos, a simply but properly executed elote, and some darn good wings. Let's get the main thing out of the way - people come here for the sunset views and outdoor space. Both things are done well, and if you want to watch the sun set over the horizon, you can't beat it. This is more of 2 1/2 stars review, but I rounded up for the friendly staffers and everyone seeming to try their best. But everything else needs a little help. Let's start with drinks. We arrived in the afternoon on a Sunday and the place was about half full, mostly with people finishing up a late lunch. After we put our drinks order in, it took about 15 minutes to get them. Two drinks. Not a good start. Drink choices are extremely limited. No taps, so all beer is from a can. One brand of wine. And a bunch of mixed drinks that came heavy on the ice (plastic cups filled to the top with ice), light on the actual drink. This, too, on a day where the temperature was struggling to rise over 50 degrees (so really, I don't need that much ice!). Food comes faster than the bar, unbelievably. Apps came quick, as did our mains. But everything food-wise was uninspired. I had the burger, but it was literally two patties of meat on a bun with some jalapeños thrown and crushed corn chips on top. Supposed to be pickled jalapeño and salsa on it too, don't know where that went. It tasted mostly like someone just made some quick burgers and served them dry on a bun. Honestly disappointed by the burger, which is so easy to make and make well. Dinner-mates were equally unimpressed. Cubano was bland and nothing like a real Cubano (one of us lived in Miami, so we know). The enchilada was a highlight, had good flavors, and had us all wishing the rest of the food could be as good. If the Club wants to stay open to Thanksgiving, investing in more than the 3 propane heaters and the single fire pit might be helpful. Given that they have about two dozen outdoor tables. So much potential! I get it, restaurants that offer views usually don't have the drinks or food to match them. Sadly, this is the case with the Sunset Club so far. read more

What a great location with great views, fun vibe and awesome food! Waited a while to get our food (they've only been open a couple of weeks, still working out the kinks), but totally worth the wait! Party of 6, everyone was very happy with their food, even the 13 year olds! Had the ceviche, poke bowl, chorizo , duck empanadas, burgers , and fish tacos. Everything was on point! I am a very good cook, and have high expectations, and they met them! Trina was our waitress and was sweet and apologetic and honest about the wait. We got there at about 4:30 on a Sunday and the bar was full. We ordered a white wine and a beer and shared the Brussels sprouts. They were delicious! Service was great. It took me a year to get here but it was worth the wait! Perfect vibes for a Sunday afternoon with the fam. The outdoor space is awesome- the fire pit, jenga and corn hole boards and a fortuitous showing of Jaws made my 10 and 7 year old's day. Food and drinks were delicious- the pink shorts and the tuna poke bowl were perfect after a day at the beach. Hubby had the wings and fish tacos. Both were excellent. Staff was super friendly and on point. I wish there were more places like this closer to Boston! Will absolutely be back again. read more
