Cute little diner in Soquel. Nice brunch place! Parking in front and behind the restaurant. Wait was about 15-20 minutes when we arrived on a Sunday morning. I ordered the Benedict, my friend ordered the Mickey Mouse combo. Definitely not good looking Mickey waffles though-they were kind of traumatizing. Haha but she had no complaints about how they tasted. The Benedict was great-perfectly poached eggs and delicious hollandaise sauce. The potatoes, though, could have been better. There were some burnt pieces and the ones that weren't hurt, just had little flavor to them. The Benedict more than compensated for that though. It was that good. Plus the extra piece of Canadian bacon included was a nice touch! read more

Food was excellent and I would recommend the smoked salmon scramble. If you are a fan of hash browns be aware they only serve homefries, but their homemade salsa makes up for the limited potato options. I was sooooo disappointed with this place. My husband and I arrived with our toddler son at close to 10:50 AM last Sunday. There were a few names ahead of us, but the line was going quickly, so we figured we'd be seated within 15 minutes at the most. NOT THE CASE. Because we were a party of 3, smaller parties were seated ahead of us (and I'm not talking about those seated at the counter). There was a party of 2 that was seated at a table that could have easily fit 4 or more people, just a few parties before us. Because of this, my husband and I were not seated until close to 11:45 AM, with SEVERAL parties who had arrived after us, being seated already. My son was extremely hungry and grumpy at this point. After we ordered, which, I don't think there was anything particularly interesting or time-intensive about our order (I ordered a home fries plate with spinach, mushrooms, and cheese, my son had pancakes, and my husband had French toast), our food came out after those parties who were seated AFTER us! I particularly noted that a couple had sat down, even after we ordered, and had received their plates, similar orders to ours, I might add, before our food came out. We were still waiting for our food and at that point, my husband was ready to walk out. I asked another waitress, not the one who'd taken our order, if our food was ready, and she came back with our food, saying it had just finished when she walked up. We did not start eating until after 12:15 PM. My overall experience was that the food was good but the service was atrocious. As others were being called to be seated and as my family and I continued to wait, we were not even acknowledged. After we ordered, no one came to check on us as we waited for our food to come out. I definitely see from the other reviews that my experience is not the norm. For whatever reason, I almost feel like our waitress purposely made us wait. Excellent stop for breakfast. Just go. It has a slightly run down diner feel, but it is not a dump. The scrambles were amazing. I actually did a double take because I could not believe how good it tasted. The Sunday scramble with chorizo was a winner. Large portion. Wife really liked the veggie omlet. We tried this place while on a short vacation trip (Friday morning around 10a). Figured the waits would be shorter on a weekday than what some of the weekend Yelp reviews showed. It took about 15-20 minutes to get a table for 4 (bench outside), and the place remained full while we were here. The Good: - Large portions of good, fresh food. Hubby and I liked the "Potato Mess" special (like a thick egg frittata - we really could have split it, very filling). Loved the cheese and ham "design your own" omelette - good flavor. - "Fresh fruit cup" was exactly that - not a liquidy cup of fruit, but banana, kiwi, strawberries and more, clearly fresh and recently cut up. - Prices were good. - Wait staff very friendly and attentive. - Easy to get street parking close by. The Bad: - Toast was burned (half of it) - "Mickey" pancakes were pretty dark on one side, but our daughter didn't mind. - It took about 1.5 hours to eat there, even on a weekday! I think they just have a relaxed pace. And cash only! I guess we would eat here again, but might try other places first. read more

We went to Santa Cruz for a couple days. I researched places to eat breakfast. Sunrise Cafe had a good rating so we decided to try it out. The place was very quaint & reminded me of the small cafés I visited growing up in southern Missouri. The food was delicious. The waitresses were friendly and very attentive. Prices were more affordable than what you would pay at Denny's or IHOP. I recommend anyone in the area to try it out, you won't be disappointed. read more

Walked in this morning...and it was FREEZING inside at 10 am. 1st Not good thing) There were two Hispanic Guys working who did not look to be trained in restaurant service. I had to let them know I was ready to order though they could see that my menu was put down and it was not busy at all. I asked the man taking my order which he preferred the Hashbrowns or country potatoes. He said "the Country potatoes", So I said I'll have the county potatoes then. The small omelet came ....with Hashbrowns. I was brought no silverware. It was slow enough to have brought that right off...but at least with your food. I than gently yelled over to the two men...who were oblivious to anyone needing anything...saying I had no silverware. They brought some...and 'Napkins Please'. I asked for more Hot water...saying black Tea needs very hot water...and saw him filling my 1/2 way full of Luke warm water pot...and said. Please would you dump out that lukewarm water and fill with HOT water for my tea. I was not asked if I wanted milk or cream with my tea. So had to ask for that as well. I had to ask for second and thirds tea bags. No one asked if I needed anything...or how anything was. When done eating...I had 1/3 of my omelet left. No one asked if I needed a box to go. Had to ask for that. It was obvious this was not the same ownership. and The two guys working didn't have a clue how to be a server. It was obvious from every single thing about them, watching them....that they had NEVER been a server ever and had no idea what that job entailed. So I asked, "was this under new ownership?" YES 3 months ago, was the answer. I was not asked if I wanted my check...though my plates, dishes and silverware had been neatly stacked. again there were empty tables..it was not busy. Yes after bringing my food or things I asked for....the two men working simply ignored everyone talking with themselves. Even when they walked right by my table they never looked my way...I always had to speak out to get their attention. I had to ask for my check. There were many empty tables....it was not the normal busy Sunrise Cafe that I was very familiar with. It was the worst service I have ever had at any restaurant. Sunrise Cafe always had excellent, attentive waitress's. I've eaten there so many times and always had excellent service even when full and busy. How very odd to have these men working who had ZERO waiter training or experience. It was truly a joke. These guys hadn't a clue how to be work at a Restaurant...or give service. SADLY...I will never eat there again. It was not enjoyable to be freezing cold when I had on two shirts and a down coat. It was that cold inside. I never took off my down coat. It was not enjoyable to have to ask for every little thing....and no smiles, no feeling like they enjoyed waiting. It was a very odd experience. Like the owner hired their relatives....possibly who had never worked in a restaurant before....maybe never eat at a restaurant before. Service was that bad....There was no service really. Felt like it was every person for themselves ...and we don't care about you at all.....just pay us. And to add insult to injury I was charged for the added cheap Twinnings black tea bags....which I have never been charged for anywhere. Not even when Organic. Came across this gem last week and I must say my husband and I had happy tummies after eating our breakfast . I had the Joe's Special ~ spinach, mushroom , bell peppers and onions, and cheese with home fried potatoes ~ SOOO DELICIOUS! I'd come back! Met my five minute rule... Water and waiter within five minutes... Got that in under 1. Sat at the counter and encountered friendly staff and neighborly customers, always a plus. Took the recommendation on Yelp and had the Corralitos Bavarian cheese sausage scramble and YUM. Great favors, crispy seasoned potatoes. Wanted to avoid Hwy 17 and see the trees so left Santa Cruz in the morning and found Soquel. Sunrise Cafe will be a return destination next time I travel through... If you're looking for good, down-home comfort food served in portions big enough to feed several armies, this is the place for you. My wife and I were in Soquel for a relaxing five-day vacation, and this was the only restaurant we went to twice. The first time, I had a great Reuben (delicious, but not quite as stacked with meat as the ones in my hometown of Cleveland - but Clevelanders are downright nuts about those kinds of things. If I'm being honest, the portions are probably more right here). My wife had an enormous omlette, and the fries, oh the fries ... cooked to perfection. Crispy on the outside, potatoey on the inside. When we came back for the second time, they were 15 minutes from closing and yet welcomed us in as if it were nothing. We split the Bleu Burger adn fries, and it was just as amazing as we thought it would be. Thanks to everyone for making us feel right at home. We'll b e back next time we're in Soquel. read more

Decent food! My boyfriend and I came here on a Saturday around noon and we were immediately seated. I got their pesto scramble with a biscuit and gravy and he got their turkey eggs benedict. The pesto egg scramble was very good, highly recommend if you like pesto and pine nuts. My boyfriend was a bit disappointed with the eggs benedict because he said it was a cooked too much and was missing out on some of the runny yolk. We had a table of 5. They pulled a chair to our table. Not much elbow room in the both for two and definitely there wasn't much room for our plates. We managed though. We went here for breakfast. My son order a cheese omelet. He told me there was too much cheese everywhere compare to the amount of eggs. My eggs Benedict was just okay. Nothing to call home to mom about the holandaise sauce. My husbands pancakes, bacon, and eggs were good. Our other order of waffles were fine. The service was really good. The waitress from Utah was fabulous. If you're looking for great, high-quality food in a local business, this is your place. Everything here is made fresh. You might have to wait a bit for your food because of that, but it's worth it. They have an interesting breakfast menu of eggs, scrambles, omelets, pancakes, and waffles. There are specials every day with whatever is fresh in season, like today's scramble with asparagus. OMG! Their breakfast is delicious and huge! The coffee is superior to most breakfast cafes. The service was spot on. The atmosphere was casual and friendly. It's a small cafe and retro looking, cute place. We wanted the pesto papas but they were out of pesto. We ended up ordering the Potato Mess and added avocado. Like I said- it was a huge portion size! My husband and I shared it and were pretty stuffed and happy by the end of our meal. Tip- Even if you're not into marmalades, I recommend you try the marmalade on the table. Love this place for breakfast, going to miss it when I move! Try the Pesto Papas...I add avocado to mine - delish! Comes with biscuits which are super yummy, soft, and warm. The only small thing I can complain about is the price for a "large" OJ. It's a standard small cup of OJ, nothing large about it at all yet it's 5 bucks with no refills. On my recent mini-holiday to Santa Cruz [and surrounding area] what stands out only second to my water-play was service at a few choice establishments. Two restaurants, one surf shop, and one coffee shop gave me incredible service, the likes of which I rarely see in SF. Genuinely friendly, down to earth, real. Yay Sunrise Cafe, you made the cut. I spent most of my time in SC and beyond being tossed about the ocean like some bit of kelp, but one fine morning, we stopped at Sunrise for breakfast on a weekday, just after morning rush and there was only one other table filled. I think we got lucky on timing. Our waitress was so nice, like we were old friends, not nice in a Sucking Up I Want A Big Tip way. you can't fake this shit. I seriously wanted her to sit and eat breakfast w us. She was so laid back and Just Nice. I love her. I had their version of eggs benedict, which was ok, not great. It came w a very generous side of fresh fruit and although my heart really wanted hashbrowns and at first I was disappointed, I happily ate the fruit and was just as satisfied, wo the guilt. Cinzia and Reno both had waffles, which were overdone and not great. I also tried the special, salmon scramble - delicious. My coffee never got below a half a cup. The kids loved their cocoa, but really the tall thin glass w tall straws are clearly not ideal for youngsters. Poor Reno had to stand on tippy-toe to sip his. I'm a sucker for an old, run down diner for any meal, and this is exactly that. While the food didn't blow me away, the service did. Next time I'm in the area, I'll try that cheesy bavarian sausage scramble and pray I'll be able to slide into my wetsuit afterwards. read more

The NYF and I dined here for a late brunch one morning before heading off to look at open houses in Soquel. The place was packed, but luckily we were next in line for a seat. The ambiance inside was kind of neutral, but had a bit of a minimalist diner feel, including waist high countertop and vinyl booths. Music playing was a combination of old jazz and motown, which added to the feel. Once seated we ordered our food. She had eggs, toast, and bacon, and I had a scramble with pesto and other goodies. I also ordered a side biscuit with gravy because it seemed like a good idea. I have to say this was pretty average fare. Typical greasy-spoon; and slightly overpriced considering what we received. The biscuit came out with all of the other food and it was obvious we had ordered too much. The biscuit was also drowned in what looked like the McCormick's store bought white-pepper gravy, and had already begun to congeal. Not exactly appetizing. My pesto scramble was incredibly rich and greasy; so much so that I couldn't finish. The NYF's meal was also greasy, but a little bit more manageable. I think the biggest problem is that our server disappeared. I had finished my water before the food even came, and she never once returned to fill me up, and I spent the whole meal feeling parched. When it came time for us to get going, we waited nearly 15 minutes for the check, including trying to flag our server down, before getting up and walking to the register, where we waited some more. All in all, there are other breakfast places in the area with better food, better prices, and MUCH better service. 2.5 stars read more

Randomly picked this Cafe on Yelp for breakfast today. It looked like a hole in the wall but upon getting closer it was obviously popular because every seat was full. It didn't take long to get seated thankfully. We we're really impressed with the portion sizes and it reflected in the price! It was more than enough food without being excessive and we weren't paying for leftover food. Everything was cooked to perfection. It was obvious that whoever was making the food really took pride in what they were serving. The staff was young, friendly and refreshing. My order was completely wrong (I knew it was mine because it was topped with an extra add on I requested), but I didn't bother correcting them because I didn't want to wait an additional 15-20 minutes for the correct food with an already impatient toddler. I was never given the water I requested. The entire vibe of the place just felt a little depressing, even though there were like 4-8 other people in there at the same time as us. Sunrise is a tiny breakfast/lunch joint in Soquel, with straightforward good food at great prices. The girls that work there are awesome- they're cute and friendly, and do their jobs well. It's all about the Sunny Scramble for me, I've tried other things but it always convinces me to come back for more...Scrambled eggs with an addictive homemade Spanish sauce, avocado, black olives, sour cream, and tomatoes (which I ask to have added), it is so damn good it's ridiculous!! Sometimes when I wake up I just know that today's the day I have to get my Sunny Scramble, I seriously get excited about it! This became a staple for me when I was vegetarian, but I would still never add meat to it, although they have local Corralitos sausage, which totally rocks. My bf likes the corned beef hash, and it's not the canned stuff either (not that there's anything wrong with that, it has a time and place!) it's real corned beef cooked up with potato and bell pepper, maybe onions too, not sure. Last week we split the chicken apple sausage breakfast for 6.25, and it was really yummy and still enough to fill us up. No split charge either, which is nice. The decor is nothing fancy, a bit frayed around the edges yet it's clean, and they have good jazz playing to go along with the posters on the walls, very chill atmosphere. I like that they aren't worrying about making the place look fancy so they can jack you on the prices, as many places do. An icetea is $1, a bowl of soup is around $3, and the breakfasts are reasonable as well. Pros: My scramble was cooked reasonably well, albeit rather tasteless . Doctored with pepper and hot sauce, however, it tasted decent. Cons: Fruit cup was pretty awful, with melon pieces so unripe they were crunchy and had no taste. Toast was cheap sliced bread. Service was slow and inattentive at times, was difficult to get our check. Worst: Most disgusting bathroom in Soquel, door is sticky to the touch, fixtures and even walls visibly dirty. Very small local homely place; so always a line at the weekend. Good range of basic breakfast dishes both veggie and meat. Dozen or so daily specials too. The scrambles are highly recommended. And the local cheesy Bavarian sausage is one to look out for! Mmmmm... Service was swift and unobtrusive; refilling my coffee 3 or 4 times without letting the cup go dry. Did I say I liked the scramble... Oh yes! It was cooked to perfection - the mushrooms were tasty, the asparagus was perfect (not overcooked) and the eggs moist.
