We stopped in tonight for dinner after dropping a kid off at Ole Miss. this building is from the 1800's, which is pretty cool in and of itself. When you roll up to Taylor Grocery, it literally is like taking a step back in time. This is about as old school as you'll find. We entered and left our name and then were told to wait outside until our name was called. The wait was only maybe 10 minutes. We were seated and given menus and began our perusing. We settled on a sample app, a bowl of gumbo, a small fried catfish dinner and a country fried pork meal. The sample was quick to arrive, hush puppies, boneless chicken wings, catfish nuggets and fried shrimp. Everything was hot and delicious. The entrees arrived shortly after. The catfish dinner was hot and delicious, the fries with rotella were also hot and delicious and the baked beans were also good. The country fried pork was cooked well and also hot and delicious and crunchy. The gravy was flavorful and the side of okra and fries were also tasty. We finished the meal with a slice of pecan pie with ice cream. The ice cream is absolutely delicious and the pie was great too. I will note, this is the south, salt is used liberally on everything down here and Taylor Grocery is no exception. So be warned, it will have a bold salty flavor if you're eating fried foods here. The server was fantastic, Jeff the host was also fantastic. Refills were given freely and liberally and the live music was outstanding as well. You absolutely must try Taylor Grocery, the ambience and history and food is absolutely awesome.

More context: Exceptional food with even mediocre service can create an exceptional location. I travel all over the US, Canada, South America, Europe, amongst other places and expected southern hospitality while patronizing this restaurant, because Mississippi is known for hospitality(The Hospitality State). I have never been treated so poorly over all of my travels. I will not go back and am suggesting that you have thick skin if you decide to partake in this establishment. Poor service can ruin a good meal with good friends, especially on a date night. That's what happened to us. In closing, Taylor Grocery and Restaurant is close to Oxford, Ms(Ole Miss) I have had the opportunity to 'break bread' in many of the restaurants/bars/and general establishments in Oxford and not once have I been treated the way I was treated at Taylor Grocery.
