I was in Oxford and this appeared to be the place to try. I got in around 6:15 pm and there were at least 30 people in line. I waited outside on the porch bench. I got called in about an hour and 10 minutes after I put my name on the list. The inside is as rustic as the exterior, and I do appreciate the character of the place. The menu is what you expect with all the Southern staples and many sides. I ordered the half dozen grilled shrimp plate, a single fillet of blacked catfish, side of fried okra and rice. I must say the proteins disappointed me the cat fish was way over salted and not cooked well. The shrimp were also very salty and lacking in any other seasoning. The highlight were the hush puppies and okra! I also got the chocolate cobbler for dessert, skip this unless you kind chunks of chocolate sheet cake mixed with grocery store pudding. All in all this place should be on your list for the experience and it's history--but only if you don't have to wait more than 15 minutes. read more

We HAVE to go to Taylor Grocery everytime we are in the area! I usually order the blackened chicken or the shrimp platter. You can get the shrimp fried or grilled! The shrimp is always cooked perfectly and has such good flavor from the grill! Same with the blackened chicken. So much flavor! There are so many different sides to choose from. I typically order the side salad and a loaded baked potato. Today I forgot to ask for it loaded :( You MUST try their hush puppies as well. The servers are like family! They know my family as they go once every other week at least. They joke around with their southern hospitality and it always makes dinner enjoyable! read more

Im sure it was clean but it had a dirty look I guess due to the years of ppl signing the wall and no fresh paint. But that is sorta a turnoff for me. I do not love fried catfish but am a huge fan of grilled or baked catfish and theirs was good! Came here with my in laws on a Saturday evening. Just a heads up, this place gets really busy! Go early, or expect a wait. They do not take reservations, nor will they seat you if your whole party is not present. We got there a little past 6 PM and was told the wait time is an hour. We actually only waited 20 minutes. Our server was great! Good Ole southern hospitality where they still call you, "sweetie and baby." I ordered the grilled chicken. It was juicy and tender. Did it wow me? You feel like you have stepped back in time, and are eating at a friends dinner table. I have never had anything here I didn't like. Typically we get a slice of cobbler, but this time we were too full. We also really like their sausage and cheese plate. But didn't not get it this time. We wanted to go right to the main course! Service was bad-like really bad. Our waiter was clearly annoyed with our kids and even grumpily said something about their behavior-and if you've ever been around a 3 & 5 yr old, they were being quite mild. At the end, they added a $20 split plate charge because we ordered 4 entrees (for the 4 adults) but gave a few bites to our kids. We didn't even ask for extra silverware or plates. Our kids literally ate a few bites. Then we asked the staff about the charge and two waitresses were laughing at us. They also gave us the check before we were done eating (15 min into our meal). I've been coming to Taylor grocery for over two decades now. I've lived, worked, graduated and owned a store in Oxford, been bringing friends and family to this establishment for so long. Used to hang out with Lynn (owner) on the front porch in my earlier years. We had Taylor Grocery cater my daughters graduation party couple of years ago. I have a black and white framed photo by Adam Smith of Taylor Grocery in my home. I say all of this bc I am no stranger to this place. It holds dear to me! We drove over tonight from Sardis bc my husband was playing music there. I have lived in Savannah, Ga for 16 years so I was so excited to come back! I have never in my life been treated so poorly and degrading from a hostess. Sarah (Lynn's daughter) is the hostess that is the most rude, patronizing person I have ever interacted with. I have worked for years in the restaurant industry, and I can not imagine treating a customer the way she did. I also tend to not post negative reviews bc I know how difficult this industry is. But this is about the personality and attitude of a staff which happens to be the owner. Which brings in so many questions about not giving a care of being polite to customers because why? Taylor grocery will always have business no matter the reviews or complaints or how rude you are. Tonight, I waited my turn and simply, with a soft voice, kindly asked if I could sit at the table in the back that was empty and faced a brick wall in a corner (we were there when they opened) so I could eat and watch my husband. There was no one waiting. And Sarah lost her mind, came at me verbally aggressive. It will make this review too long to share everything she said to me. After I not once even got to say anything to her during her berating of me, she threw her hands up and said you have to go and talk to "him" (Lynn) like I was some huge problem to her! I don't care if she owns it, she needs to be removed from hospitality. I think she enjoys bullying people. I realize it is a high traffic and turnover place, but never was I planning on sitting and holding that lil table all night long. I was so excited about eating catfish in my old fave spot, and watching my husband for a set. Quite honestly she might be the meanest boned human being I have ever encountered. My husband proceeded to go in and ask what happened. And she says "well she chose to get upset". Needless to say, I left in tears/disbelief/abused and went to to my friends place St Leo to eat. I did not deserve that Taylor Grocery. Will not be back with that verbal aggressive women, Sarah. She's horrific. Taylor Grocery is cool and all, but when Sarah is there the black cloud that hangs above her of bad energy and bad vibes just ruins it all. Ps. They don't pay a dime for their musicians, they only get paid with tips. My husband is from Australia and he did it for the experience. And they get free entertainment, and treat us like that? I had heard a lot of hype about this place online and from others. It is about what I expected. Long wait (not that long for a Thursday) and friendly but slow service. We were there about 2 hours plus, so don't be in a hurry. I"m not a catfish fan so I opted for the grilled pork loin, which was outstanding as was the baked potato. Tea was good. Now that our girl is in Grad school, we'll still have to come out at least one more time, and Run to Taylor Grocery! My husband got the full catfish fillet meal, and I got an order of red beans and rice with a blackened fillet. The fried fish, with cornmeal dredge was super light as air, and paired with the thick house tartar sauce and lemon! Heaven! My red beans and rice was spicy, and had stewed all day flavor, and my blackened fillet was perfectly seared, leaving it juicy and flaky! The fried okra was a star on its own too! Eat it hot! The sweet tea was also perfect! We finished off with a dessert of peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream to share. Great, not too sweet, ending to our memorable meal. I had heard great things about this joint and there is always a line to get in so I was excited to try it. We went on a Sunday afternoon and only had to wait about 15-20 mins to be seated. I was expecting a warm southern welcome with some southern hospitality but we received neither. The guy who walked us to our table wouldn't even speak to us. Our waitress stopped by and grabbed our drink order but after dropping them off, we didn't see her for another 20 mins and had to flag her down for her to wait on us. They are famous for their catfish so that was obviously what we ordered. I got the blackened catfish while my husband ordered the fried catfish. We both got okra as a side and I got a salad and he got Cole slaw. When my salad arrived I was completely let down. It was just a pile of lettuce with one lone tomato on top. I know it's just a side said but come on, throw a gal a crouton or two, maybe even a sprinkle of cheese?? I was still hopeful that our entrees would be incredible. Unfortunately, my hopes were let WAAAAAAY down. My fish had a strange texture, almost like it wasn't cooked long enough. It was mealy and gritty and simply, not good. My husband's fried catfish was burnt and barely had any fish in the overcooked filet. The okra was slimy and didn't have much batter on it. The only redeeming factor on our plates was the hush puppies. Those were delicious. We had planned on ordering dessert however, after how poorly our meals tasted we decided against it. It's a shame this place didn't live up to its reputation. Such great potential but no follow through. I have been to Taylor Grocery twice in the past few weeks. The service is excellent. I had grilled fish with baked potato and salad on both occasions. The first time, it was the best meal I have ever had there. The fish was cooked to perfection. Salad was nice and fresh and the baked potato was good but could have been a little hotter. The second trip made me say I probably would not go back. The fish was watery as though they took it out of water put hardly any seasoning on it and grilled it. It had no flavor and the texture was awful because it seemed saturated in water. Again the baked potato could have been hotter. The salad was very fresh. Now for the worst part.... The live music is so loud you cannot even hear the person across the table from you. Most people like to visit and enjoy each others company at dinner. That's a joke. The waitress has to be in your face to help you. It's so loud you don't even want to try and tell the proprietors about your issues, you just want to get out of there. read more

But I saw a ribeye and plan to try that next time. Be sure to go early on game day weekends. They open at 5:00. But people start lining up at 4:00.
