I usually love coming to the Growler and have had good experiences in the past. However, I went there after my graduation with my family and had such a horrible time. The bartender did not look at us once and when my brother asked if he had any recommendations or a favorite, he responded "no" without even looking up. When I asked for 2 drinks I was told they were out which was fine, but then I asked what they did have and was told, "look if it has a cap on it". The Growler was something my family was looking forward to since they were coming for the first time from Connecticut and had heard good things, but the bartender made it seem like we weren't wanted there. I did not end up getting a drink which was an unfortunate way to end my graduation night. read more

The Growler is the ideal spot in Oxford to hang out with a group of friends and grab some great beer on tap! I've been to The Growler quite a few times and have always had a great experience. I decided to swing in this week while back in town and it really held up. The staff working the bar are consistently awesome - they're personable, quick, and extremely helpful. The beer is always well poured. Their food is always great for the atmosphere. Some places tend to get lazy when serving bar food, but that is not the case for The Growler. There is so much seating available if you are planning to hang out with friends, and they have a few tvs and games available for use. It is somehow also a great spot for working - I have typed many, many papers here and have somehow never been too distracted despite this place often being filled with groups of people. read more

Very disappointing. Walked in on a Saturday night and it was completely empty which was fine but the bar tender did not even pay us attention when we sat down. Turns out he was drunk because there's no way he wasn't the was acting. Part of my burger tasted frozen. We decided to turn on Netflix and 10 minutes in the bartender decided to blast music. Keep in mind we were the ONLY people here and once he did that we couldn't hear anything. read more

Disappointing experience for a beer place. We ordered a Dos Equis Lager off of the menu and an Amber was served. No apology, no suggestions for alternatives, but they did let us order something different due to the mixup. How does a craft beer place get lager vs amber wrong on the menu? The other beer we ordered was available and good, but the bartender barely looked at us the whole time. Usually at a craft beer place I'd like suggestions or help from the bartender with deciding what to order. We tried to order pizza, but they were out. The fries we had were good and the server who brought out our food was very friendly. Nice space outside in the breezeway to sit. This place is probably one of the better places in Oxford. That said, it's a weird spot. It's prime location, great selection but the interior is very weird. It's super bright, lots of open space (not in a good way) and random TV placement. My visit, i stood at a bar reading the menu and someone was behind the bar the entire time and didn't even acknowledge me. After quite some time, i finally asked a different person behind the bar and they explained their ordering process. That's a surefire way to have people leave upset. If you can't be bothered to acknowledge or speak to your customers I wouldn't plan on being in business very long. Once we got over that hurdle, I enjoyed a few barrel select whiskeys and a few beers. read more

Got a double smash burger with embarrassingly small over-cooked meat patties and they were out of cheddar so the pepper Jack but wouldn't have mattered. Basically a coffee shop that serves beer instead of coffee. This is a great place to catch up w friends or play an incredibly competitive game of Uno. There are 30 beers on tap that are constantly rotating in and out. Also, the hotdogs are pretty damn good (albeit not very filling). The atmosphere is much more coffee shop than pub, though I can say from experience that a couple cups of coffee helps you study much more effectively than a couple pints of beer. The Growler is a great place to grab a few beers and work through the afternoon with friends or colleagues.

Brilliant. It is like a coffee house for beer, where they offer two dozen beers instead of only a few coffee varieties, and the staff are twice as beer-nerdy as any coffee shop staff could ever be coffee-nerdy. This concept should be established everywhere and frankly should have been five years ago. Even my own great beer-drinking city of Chicago has nothing remotely resembling this model. Unlike a bar, the Growler offers eclectic seating, full light, and mellow music at a reasonable volume. This encourages a variety of customer types. A person can come alone to study or read (as I did) or have a date (as at least one couple I observed) or socialize with small groups of friends (as most of my fellow patrons that evening). The twosome to my right was a college-aged guy and his visiting mother. How cool is that--you can take your mother to the Growler on a Saturday evening! At a typical bar, your options are limited to shouting to each other over the lethal music or staring at sports on TV. (Or both if you're ambitious.) I failed to catch his name, but the main employee a couple of Saturdays ago (12/06/14) was awesome, adept at suggestions and generous with samples. Most of the offerings were local or regional--just what I had hoped--displayed on a couple of flat-screens on the wall. These menus feature all the vital information such as type, city & state of origin, price, ABV, size of pour, and a succinct description. Very slick and effective. The only knock on this place is that they close at 10pm. I could have hung out here all night. read more

This place seems much more like a coffee shop than a bar. They have a small counter and not really much of a bar to hang out at. You have to sit at a table or in a big comfy chair. They also have a small menu of sandwich type fare. You can get beer by the pint or in a growler and the cheapest beer they have is $5 a pint but then you get to pay 40 cents of tax on top of that and they don't take cash so its just debit or credit cards. Personally I just didn't find the environment at all conducive to wanting to hang out and drink beer but then again I hate coffee shops too and would rather be at a bar drinking beer. The table and chair setup here just doesn't seem to create an environment conducive to social interaction and meeting new people. Good enough place if you want to grab a growler to go of beer you won't find at most other places around Oxford I guess but unless you like the coffee shop environment for your beer boozing where you can be left unsociably alone it really lacks a bar ambiance to it. They do open at 11:00 AM so that is earlier than many other bars around Oxford but I saw a lot of people pop in to look around and then leave as it just doesn't have a social bar environment to it. In its current configuration it probably ranks dead last for me in my rankings of Oxford bars as it just doesn't provide the type of entertainment venue I look for in my drinking establishments. read more

I've been here many times and it's easily my favorite place in Oxford to grab a beer at. It's not rowdy and blasting obnoxious music like a typical undergrad bar but is a place I can go to hang out and actually talk to friends and share a few beers. I've also come here to relax and do homework or write. The bar staff has always been friendly and prompt. The atmosphere is very inviting, and the ability to sit outside when it's nice and take in the sunshine is great. The craft beer books on the tables are also a nice touch. They have the largest selection of craft beer on tap in town, and probably the entire state. The taps rotate all the time as well so there's always something new to try and enjoy. read more

Very rude and will not accommodate guest with a seat when needed (owners always sitting at multiple tables taking up space) or with recommendations on a beer. Oxford has been needing a place like this for years. It offers a lot of local craft brews but also some big-name crafts like New Belgium. It's intimate and chill, with lots of reading material on the history and culture of beer. Some complain that it's almost too chill, and not like a "bar," but that's what makes this lil tasting room special. It's for people who are serious about beer and having a good time with close friends. If I could offer a recommendation for improvement, it would be to maybe put some new breweries in the rotation from other southern states like Texas, Florida, or SC. Go get you a growler. read more
