I stopped into Back 9 while passing through Oxford on my way to an event in Jackson with some friends in entertainment. It was later in the evening, and I wasn't sure how many places would still be open that late elsewhere in the state, so stopping in such an iconic college town felt like the right move. Unfortunately for me--but probably great for business--it happened to be a home game for Ole Miss Rebels baseball, so the entire area was packed. I tried a few places before finally managing to grab a single seat at the very end of the bar at Back 9. The atmosphere was immediately fun and energetic. Between the sports simulators and TVs broadcasting games throughout the space, it felt exactly like the kind of lively college-town sports bar you'd hope to stumble into on a busy game night. The staff was clearly stretched thin because of the crowd, so I don't hold the slower pacing against them. If anything, it reminded me how differently high-volume bars function from city to city. There are probably a few things college-town bars in general could learn from the efficiency of Nashville's Broadway spots, but that's more of an observation than a criticism of this restaurant specifically. The menu is exactly what you'd expect in the best way possible--handhelds, flatbreads, comfort food, and crowd-pleasing bar favorites. I ended up ordering the Chipping Cajun pasta, and honestly, it completely surprised me. The balance between the spice and cream sauce was excellent. The bell peppers, onion, and garlic added depth to the flavor while also giving the dish a nice variety of texture. The seafood was evenly cooked and genuinely delicious throughout. It actually reminded me of one of my favorite dishes back in Nashville at Darfons Restaurant & Lounge, which I definitely wasn't expecting from a busy college-town sports bar. Overall, Back 9 ended up being one of the highlights of my drive through Oxford. If you're passing through town, especially on a game weekend, it's absolutely worth stopping in and trying for yourself. read more

Let me explain why I'm giving this restaurant 5 stars! Simply for the manager Matt and our waiter behind the bar Luke. They are some of the friendliest and most accommodating people. The food was also pretty great. The only downfall were the hostesses. Came in with a party of 3. They said we could eat outside and be sat immediately or sit inside and have a 10 minute wait. The whole time we stood waiting (it was way too hot outside) one of the hostesses was cussing up a storm talking about someone and after we were waiting for 39 minutes and noticed they were letting bigger parties in in front of us, When asking why that is, the hostess said very rudely "we have to save those seats for bigger parties". You can go sit outside if you want to sit now". My husband asked for a manager. We spent the next few minutes with the hostesses side eyeing and talking and laughing about us. Matt was super kind, was very apologetic, even brought us a free appetizer even though we said we were fine. I would go here again but they need better hostesses. read more

Lobster Mac-n-cheese was tasteless and prepared poorly. Grease separated and two pieces of lobster were floating in butter and oil. Philly Cheese Steak was too salty. Water pitcher that was brought to the table had a chip and crack which left a glass shard in my finger. Please DO NOT go here for the food. Play golf and leave. Came for a double date as when we were strolling through the square the day before this place looked neat. Sat down and the first few things we asked for they were out of so that was a bummer. Waitress was a bit aloof and inattentive as we continued to navigate the drink and food menu. As we landed on some food options it came rather quickly, to which the burger and lobster roll was very good. Wings were not as warm as you would expect for fresh so that was concerning but the flavor was very good. The flatbread was way over cooked and the meat was dry, we mentioned it after only take 1-2 bites and mentioned it just to be told well nothing. No apology or attempt to make it right just a simple OH. I do suppose if you participate in the games they offer and are here simply lore for a bar and game experience it's got a much better appeal as this place landed a little flat for us. read more

Great location - on the Square in Oxford. Cool concept. Interior was nice and had good vibes. They had some local beers on draft which I always enjoy when I'm an out-of-towner. The food items my party had were above average for bar fare, but not excellent. Staff was friendly and professional. In Oxford for the day and wanted to grab brunch before seeing Wicked. So glad our first choice was closed and we decided on the Back Nine instead. We were warmly welcomed and promptly shown to a table. Our server, Hudson, quickly cane to our table and took our order for mimosas. We asked about the surf and turf egg rolls and ordered those. They were fabulous and the chili sauce served with them was slightly sweet and spicy. Hudson came back to take our orders and I requested the salmon on my salad to be cooked rare. He said he hadn't ever had anyone order it rare. I told him I do not like my salmon over cooked. When he brought our orders he apologized for the delay and said that he hadn't ever the recook the salmon because it was too well done. I'm very glad he did because the salmon on my salad was perfectly cooked. It was mild and moist. The house made lemon vinaigrette was the perfect compliment to the avocado salad. Hudson was attentive, checking on us often, but wasn't intrusive. He also listened and made sure my salmon was perfectly cooked. I highly recommend Back Nine, and definitely ask for Hudson! read more

This was an interesting experience. We were seated and water was brought to the table in a glass carafe after which the server asked if wanted anything else to drink besides water. I did order an adult drink but there were no glasses for us to drink the water. We asked for glasses and she brought us one glass. The food was mediocre, the cheese dip and chips tasted like they had added milk to a jar of cheese dip. The burger was supposed to have been plain and had some sort of sauce soaked into the bun and the bacon was dry.. the birdie sandwich was dry and was overcooked as well and the breading was falling off.
