My first time to dine at Grit after living in Oxford for a long time. We had an early reservation and were seated kindly and promptly. The service was friendly, but seemed to be fighting hard against a very slow kitchen. I was at a table of five (with three burger orders), and other tables came and went while we had no food. I had to ask the person I assumed to be the manager to check on our order. We still waited, and three of us were served well before the other two. The dining room was not packed. I could see no reason for the long wait. The drive is enough to make me think twice about coming. The wait for an okay burger adds another think. read more

So very lovely! Excellent food and amazing service. I love to try new places when I'm traveling, and this was worth the trip. There are daily specials which I'm sure are with a trip back for me. Everything was delicious! We started with the bread basket (very generous portions and variety for the menu price), then had the African spiced chicken, and the shrimp and peas for entrees. Both were really tasty and interesting dishes with somewhat unexpected combos. We split the crispy rice fritters for dessert, with the bay leaf ice cream providing a nice counterpoint. Drinks were also fun: I had "The Breeze at Dawn," and then had another because it was a refreshing and well balanced cocktail for this gin fan. We appreciated being able to sit outside, and also that the staff checked in on us to make sure we were doing alright with the lively large party next to us on the patio. We thought we might've been lost in the shuffle when it took 15 minutes to get our drinks after ordering the first round, but after that minor hiccup service was top-notch. This place is a jewel. The staff is sooooo friendly and attentive. The food is wonderful. Grit showcases a variety of artists on its walls making for an ever-changing and interesting ambiance. I've eaten at Grit four times and it has been spot on every time. My latest experience was THE best. On October 9th, my husband and I wandered in with no reservation. The staff could not have been more accommodating and we were seated quickly--YAY! I had the burger and fries and YUM--it's a GREAT burger! The creme brûlée was also fabulous. Our server (sorry, don't remember the name, but she's a junior at Ole Miss and is from Colorado) was friendly and super helpful with the menu items. Place is cool the town that's building around it is cool the service was good but the food just wasn't. A Kale Salad with no Kale, a squash soup that was bland (no flavor whatsoever), a Porkchop billed as being smoky...no seasoning and not sure where the smoky flavor was. Fantastic food, service, and drink menu. Awesome area just 15 minutes outside of Oxford. Worth the drive over either before or after a game.

Made a reservation for 10:15 am, and was almost charged $15 because one member of our party was 5 minutes late. Grit says you are only allowed a maximum of 1 1/2 hours to eat or else you'll be charged money FOR STAYING TOO LONG. We hadn't even been there for an hour but the server was still trying to kick us out, saying that they "needed the table". We only had a party of 4 but there was a table next to us with literally 10+ people that WERE NOT EVEN ORDERING FOOD and they weren't trying to kick them out. They had also been there longer than us. If this is how they treat customers I don't think I'll be going back. Not to mention that the food isn't good enough to actually merit such behavior on their part. We had not been in a couple of years, since before the pandemic. Happy to report that GRIT is every bit as good or better now. Loved the drive out there with the huge full moon, had sent a letter to them the week before detailing my wife's dietary limitations and had a most courteous and friendly phone call from Nick, one of the owners, suggesting what they could prepare within her entree preferences, We had a drink as we settled into one of the most comfortable restaurant settings around. Brandon, our server, was exceptional and just a delight. We split a mixed green salad that they just worked up for us from my wife's list of do's and don't's, then she had the skirt steak without the chimichurri, which has garlic, cooked perfectly. It was very flavorful, tender, best steak she had had in a long while. I had the pumpkin seed crusted rainbow trout stuffed with a mustard green pesto and charred pumpkin on the side. It was an extraordinary dish: so imaginative and such a wonderful combination of flavors. We had a bottle of a Chilean red blend that was good enough that I bought half a case of it back in Oxford the next day, and good strong coffee and limoncellos in lieu of dessert. Earlier in the football season we were convinced that Snackbar was head and shoulders above any other restaurant in the Oxford area. We stand corrected: GRIT is every bit as good! This place is defiantly a gem! Located in a small beautiful area in taylor,ms..Service was fantastic, everyone smiles and greets you with enthusiasm. The restaurant has a farmhouse feel to it, the floors look original. The food was really good, I had the roast beef special po boy and my wife had the grilled chicken sandwich with a fried egg on top. A small mistake was made on my wife's meal, and with out hesitation they immediately comped us for there incredible banana bread pudding with homemade vanilla ice cream on top. The small city of Taylor, MS has itself a nice hidden gem in Grit. I ordered the Brisket Munster, which is a grilled cheese with brisket and muster cheese served with homemade chips. The bread is perfectly toasted and complements the juiciness of the brisket and the Munster cheese perfectly. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Also, our waiter was extremely nice and refilled our water even when we did not need it. Also, if it is a pretty day, there is a patio outside that helps to enjoy the outdoor weather. read more

Overall, the food lacked any substantial flavor and was definitely overpriced for what was served. The braised rabbit risotto was greasy. The strip steak was juicy and was a great cut of meat, but it was somewhat bland. The blueberry cornbread skillet was overpowered with too much butter. The best part of the meal was getting to spend time with my family, but the prices do not justify a trip to this restaurant. To add some insult, we were asked to give up our table by management. Although it was graduation weekend at Ole Miss, I'm not sure how I feel about this...especially after paying a $300 dinner bill for my family (before the $60 tip I left for the server, who did do an excellent job!). I do not recommend coming here...unless you're desperate for a place to eat during graduation weekend. Whatever you do, don't relax and enjoy your company too much at your table--no matter how big your bill is, you'll be asked to move or leave. read more

Dinner however is a different story unless it is Friday night chicken. They are very creative with their dishes perhaps a bit to creative. The waitress never checked on us, the steaks were cold and cooked wrong, the manager didn't care about taking care of us -only wanted to fix the food because "it would make ME feel better" when my dad has three bites of steak left.
