Was in this small town of Oxford, MS, walked into this restaurant and was stunned at the quality of the food here. I hate asparagus but I often order it to see how restaurants handle it and I could not believe how good it was. Catfish courtboullion was huge, not sure I was going to finish it, but I did because it was so good. And coconut cheesecake with tamarind sauce? Wow. Extremely friendly service, easy parking lot. Very disappointing. We are local residents. It seems with Vish leaving so too did the high standards of preparation and taste. Appetizers included the French onion soup, which was excellent, but the Tarte Tartin was not to standard. The onion was not tough and tasteless; the pastry was soggy and there was no goat cheese. I had the chicken thighs. Prepared well and tender but the *slaw* in top was tasteless, and they used the core of the cabbage which was inedible. The long grain rice was a tasteless clumpy mess, and the mixed vegetable bed was simply tasteless. The crab cakes were tasty, but were mushy, not lump. The chocolate Chess Pie was dry and crusty. Next time we will just go to the Oyster Bar and drink before going to some other place in town with better food. read more

Limited recommendation. Nice setting but the food was only okay - especially considering the hype around this restaurant and its (2019) award winning chef. My hanger steak was over cooked but otherwise on par for a mid-range fast casual restaurant rather than fine dining. The accompanying fries had so much rosemary on them that it left a burning sensation in my mouth. Our server was professional, friendly, attentive and courteous but I think that the kitchen and bar staff were slow to fill our orders. My husband and I dined at Snackbar on 6/24, the debut of their Summer 2025 menu. We ordered raw oysters, crawfish ravigote deviled eggs, and the shrimp roll. We were pleasantly surprised by the oysters, which were a variety from different areas of the country--some sweeter, some brinier, some larger, some smaller, and all tasty. We were a little disappointed with the deviled eggs, as there wasn't much filling, and it was a little too wet/thin. I'm glad they came with dressed greens, because there were only two eggs. The shrimp roll and rosemary-parmesan frites were delicious. As always, the service was exceptional, and the ambiance was cozy and relaxing. My colleague chose Snack Bar as a place to have a business dinner. I didn't know anything about the history of the restaurant or the associated "hype" regarding the food. First, from the parking lot view the restaurant looks like nothing special or fancy...just some "joint" in a strip mall. The interior, again nothing fancy... It's only when you open the limited menu that provides a glimpse of the specialness of Snack Bar. We tried small plates as well as large plates and everything was awesome. My colleague is French, and his standard for "French Onion Soup" is really high. He said to me that it's among the best he's ever had...that's high praise! For me it was great! Our server and the entire team were very attentive. Plates arrive quickly and empty plates disappeared as quickly. The star of SnackBar is the food!! Fun vibe and cozy quarters at Snackbar. You wouldn't necessarily know it from the outside as it sits in the middle of a strip mall-esque building. There a a couple tables in the front, but all the action is in the back where the booths and bars are. It can be a little loud with some many parties in close quarters, but the booths are perfect for small groups of 3-4 to share a meal. I have always come here with colleagues from work and a couple swear by the steak frites. I preferred to get something from the rotating menu and often had fresh gulf fish. I have always really enjoyed my meals here and would highly recommend to anyone in the Oxford area. read more

A couple shout outs here. Hostess/Accommodating: First thanks to the hostess for accommodating us. We came without a reservation since we thought we came at the opening (Yelp says the restaurant opened at 6PM, but it opened at 5PM) and by 6PM the place was full. The only option was to sit outside and we weren't really up for that. The hostess suggested we could have a table if we could manage an exit by a certain time -- and that worked perfect for us (win-win). The experience: The food was really good. We had the special fish dish, the French onion soup, a croc Madame, and black ink pasta. While everything was great, everyone agreed that the French Onion Soup was the best we ever had. I would go just for that! Pricing was fair, food was great, service was very good and the atmosphere was very cool and hip. We will definitely be back. The fact that this restaurant is in a mini mall is off-putting, but they certainly make up for it with the food and service, both of which were excellent. The young hostess in a rose-colored dress greeted us with a big smile when we walked in, and our waiter (tall guy with a beard) had that great mix of friendly, professional, and attentive. The owners have done a good job of creating a tavern-like, old world ambience with wood finishes, deer and other animal mounts, as well as low, warm lighting. There was a little girl at the bar who looked to be about 6. Where I am from in CA, kids are not allowed to sit at bars, so that was kind of interesting and cute at the same time. My ONLY complaint about this place is the toilet in the men's room. While there, I went into both the men's and the women's bathrooms (we have unisex restrooms in CA). The women's toilet looked pristine and clean while the men's toilet seat looked decayed, diseased, and disgusting. Seriously, you can get a new one from Amazon for about $35 bucks. It's a small price to pay to send the message to customers that cleanliness and aesthetics are important. read more

The ambiance and food were fine but nothing to write home about. The prices were a little high for the quality of the food (chicken confit - very salty, and redfish). My husband and I shared a salad and they charged a $2.50 "split" fee. Never experienced this in my times dining out and didn't request it to be on different plates in the first place. I really don't care about the $2.50 but felt a little like a "nickel and dime" situation. A good place for a nice dinner with friends, family, or a significant other -Staff was very friendly and helpful whenever needed -Food selection is nice for anyone who is hungry or looking for a meal on the lighter side CONS -A bit pricey for the food in my opinion. The food we ordered, the creole catfish and the duck confit sandwich, was average. For the prices we paid it wasn't anything significant in terms of the flavor of the food. -Food itself was average. Nothing special for a place that seems to be for a nicer dining experience. Overall, it was a nice one time place for me. I've been there once, and I think that's good enough for me. Having recently relocating to Oxford, MS, I ran into this venue in pouring rain thinking it was "just a deli". I was pleasantly surprised to find white linen table clothes and my choice of bars to rest until their 5:30pm full service. I initially chose the oyster bar. The menu selection of small plates and 3 choice oyster variety was very interesting. I was allowed to taste (on the house) one of each oyster before my final selection then left the rest up to my wait- staff. It was suggested to try the Blue Crab Claws. My toes curled in delight! I coupled them with the house cocktail special which was also delish. At 5:30pm I moved up a couple steps to the main bar offering full menu. The suggested plate was the Catfish. I am not a saucy kind of girl so the fish was tasty, however the layers of toppings (too many to name) was overwhelming to me. I sat next to a "frequent flyer" who I noticed ordered a burger. The staff understood that she ALWAYS checks the pinkness of her burger and supplied her with the appropriate cutlery prior to her ask. I thought that was cute. Overall, my visit was a pleasant one. Delicious delightful decadent. Who knew you could get amazing Indian food in Oxford MS?! Came here on Thursday after Christmas. Its packed most days but you can usually grab a spot at the bar or out your name down for a table. The food is bomb. Not a single dud in the bunch. Sweet potato chaat - woo! The chef is a James beard award winner for a reason. He takes his Indian cuisine and makes it palatable for the south /using local ingredients while still making it pop with flavor. On the spicier side. KHEEMA rolls - stuffed with duck and herbaceous deliciousness. Great play on what we typically think of as egg rolls. Mint chutney was on point. Could have used more though. Lamb osso bucco - thick slabs of fatty well seasoned meat falling off the bone. Can't miss. Redfish Veracruz was the special for the day. Perfect fish. Rich tomato salsa broth. But compared to the Indian side dishes it was pretty meh in flavor. read more

We've wanted to eat at Snackbar since my son started his grad degree at The University. His graduation was the perfect excuse. We set reservations early and we so excited to finally eat here. Over all, it was OK. The servers were kind, and mostly attentive, but just arrogant enough to be annoying. We had oysters, which were yummy, and cocktails ... also well done. Unfortunately the entrées were just ok. I had the catfish curry. It was tasty but basically what I'd get for takeout at any Thai restaurant in Atlanta. My wife was not very hungry and got the shrimp salad roll, which she described as subpar shrimp salad on half of a hotdog bun. My son got the quail ... which I think was the best thing we ordered ... but it too was just ok. All in all we had a nice time. We were glad to have a special night out and that we finally got to eat at Snackbar, but the night won't be memorable for our food. It was simply average ... which is sad given that we were so excited about it. Given the option, I'd choose seasons 52 or j Alexander over Snackbar every time.
