I love sitting on the patio during happy hour (4-5pm) and getting fresh oysters on the half-shell and happy hour wine!! Then at 5pm, SnackBar switches to dinner menu ( usually slightly different each week). A French- Southern- Creole Fusion type cuisine. Fresh Gulf Fish almost always on menu and that is what I had tonight. Excellent as always, Delicious!! Luv, Luv, LUV this place. I try to support it as much as I can in these crazy times. We really wanted to love this spot. We were excited to eat food prepared by a James Beard award winning chef. However, we were a touch disappointed as the food was just "okay." Two at the table ordered steak--both steaks were chewy. It was not what we expected. The place was too pricey to serve marginal meat. And not to pile on but the home-made looking plywood booths and walls were tacky, even by candlelight. It looked like a romantic converted Whataburger. I have eaten here so many times. When I was employed my staff and I came here all the time. When we would interview future employees, we brought several to the Snackbar. AMAZING. The atmosphere, staff, food and beverages were all exceptional. My friends and I had the tomato tower, black eyed pea salad, catfish sandwich, duck confit sandwich (with an egg), mango pie and chocolate pie. Order from the enticingly sophisticated menu as I did, or place yourself in mixmaster Alex's capable hands. I'm sure that he could craft you a perfect cocktail based on a few preference inputs. He's also a really cool guy with whom to share some late-night bar chat. I tried...a few, and my favorites were Herringbone and Autumn Leaves. But you can't go wrong whether your favorite potable is champagne, rum, gin, or whisky--especially whisky. This is about the only place in the area to get raw oysters and they have a nice selection from multiple locations across the country. They have entree selections for small plates and large plates. The food is composed of very interesting and creative spins on traditional Southern, New Orleans, and French food. Overall the food is four stars with a few items bumping the 5 star level while the drink prices and location bring the rating down. This restaurant is located in a strip mall and while the interior is nice the location doesn't rate the increased drink prices and you can enjoy much better ambiance, exponentially better location, and cheaper drinks at Chef Currence's other restaurants on the town square. The only plus for the location is that you don't have to deal with the crowds and lack of parking on football game weekends and you usually can get a table here. For Oxford this is a very expensive restaurant more on par with City Grocery for the price than a bistro experience and personally I prefer the superior experience at Currence's City Grocery for a similar price if I'm eating a full meal. If you're just in the mood for sandwiches, oysters, or snacks then this can be a nice bistro experience but the entree prices here reach those of fine dining prices. This establishment has the most expensive drink prices of anyplace in the area so that deserves the loss of one star as the prices inexplicably aren't in line with Currence's other establishments that are better located. read more

The atmosphere is candlelit and very romantic. I think they have expanded their dining room into BBB to accommodate for COVID spacing, but we were seated in the original restaurant. Our meals were well above average, the coulotte steak I ordered was a perfectly cooked quality cut of meat and the green beans and potatoes that accompanied it were well executed. My dining companion was happy with his schnitzel sandwich (although feeling a little gluttonous between that and the specialty fries he ordered with it). The service was excellent, there were issues with the hostess getting us in at the time we had reserved and seating larger parties that arrived after we did ahead of us but our waiter's prompt and unobtrusive service more than made up for whatever initial issues we experienced. I was very happy with pretty much everything, the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars and not 5 is because I just didn't get the "wow" factor I was expecting to experience at a place owned by a celebrity chef at this price point. read more

Had a terrible time. I called several times to make a reservation, but nobody answered. Hostess is upset we didn't make a reservation-I didn't bother bringing it up. We get the worst table, in the corner by the front door. 15 minutes before the sprites show up for our two sons. Twenty minutes before my wife gets a glass of wine and my cocktail. Food takes 35 minutes and is bland. Waitress came back once which meant my wife had an empty glass for 15 minutes. My wife left a $15 tip because she was too nice. Service poor. Food fair. Next time, if the waiter wants to get the family of four out of the restaurant quicker so cool people can have room, maybe serve the food faster. read more

I'm giving them 5 stars for the entire experience. I need to start off by telling you no fewer than 4 strangers highly recommended the Snack Bar. All four said this was the best food & bar in Oxford. After enjoying happy hour in the Blind Pig, Ben the bartender sent us to the Snack Bar and I'm very glad he did. We took seats at the bar and I pretty much put myself in the bartenders capable hands. I can't recall the ingredients in the three cocktails he hand crafted for me but they were exceptional. I think they were a twist on Manhattan, Old Fashion, and one other. This isn't your typical bar, these folks are professional mixologists. I even saw him mist orange through a flame to give it a different flavor as it ignited. You will need to take a cab or have a designated driver to fully appreciate. For dinner, we started with the Fried Boudin Balls. They were very good and freakin steaming hot. Cut them in half and let them cool before popping into your mouth. For the main course I had the "Shrimp & Peas". I didn't realize at the time they meant black-eyed peas. I'm not a big fan of BEP. However the shrimp were very good. They had the heads and tails on but otherwise shelled. If I lived here, I would be a regular. I think there are two listings for this business in Yelp. I stopped by here for brunch with my wife on a Sunday last month. We had originally intended to go to Big Bad Breakfast which is right next door. The hostess there told us that we could either wait for 45 minutes for a table or head over to the Snackbar which had a limited menu of BBB favorites where we could be seated immediately. Since we were on a tight schedule for the day we headed next door and found ourselves a seat at the upper bar. The inside of the snackbar has an interesting vibe with two levels that each had the same setup. A bar on one side with high tables in-between and then booths on the opposite wall. As we sat there throughout our meal we learned that they only served food to people at the bar in order to not overwhelm the BBB kitchen. After looking over the menu I decided to go with the shrimp and grits. The shrimp and grits came with some bacon, tomatoes, 2 sunny side up eggs and were served with their red eye gravy. I really thought it was good as I really enjoyed the addition of the sweet and spicy bacon while I also thought that the gravy was pretty nice. My wife also really enjoyed her big bad breakfast. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I enjoyed the food that I chose and I really liked the feel of this place. read more

I came with a group of friends and we had a reservation at 7:45 and was not seated until 8:20. I get it somethings can happen. Our server Johnny was very abrasive off the bat with weird jokes and general vibes being off. The main issue is when it came to my friend who has had a gluten allergy for 11 years, she ordered the catfish dish which had no description of having any fir of gluten in it. There was bread crumbs on the catfish and when she asked to return it because she was allergic he gave the whole table a 2 minute long lecture and was very rude to her about it. She re ordered a new dish which was the salmon and she said it was the worst thing she ever ate. It had no flavor and was a little over cooked. After everything when the bills were handed out it said on my friends was $40 over priced and said that there was a chicken dish in it which nobody ordered. The server did fix it but still had the snarky attitude during the whole thing. Everyone else's food was good and there was no really issues other than my friends experience. read more

To begin, I've been to Snackbar probably 15 times, and I haven't been disappointed once. Their French Onion soup is the best I've ever had, and if they had a bowl version, I would order it for my whole meal. Truffle frites= always salty and delicious, and they always cook their steak exactly how you want (in my case always medium rare). I used to love oysters, and whenever my roommate and I would go we'd be very impressed with the freshness of the oysters. Snackbar is great, and I try to go there as much as I can on a college girl's budget. It's much quieter than some other nice restaurants in town, if you are looking for an intimate place. read more

The Snack Bar has friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere. The lighting is very dim, making for a romantic setting. The confit Duck croquet monsieur had a unique flavor. The sauce has a horseradish flavor with a little kick. The burger also had a unique sauce and was delicious. The best part was the parmesan truffle frites with the aioli sauce, I would highly recommend getting this as a side. The dessert was good, but maybe not $9 good. The hostess cake was slightly dry, but still had a good flavor. The bananas foster upside down cake also had a good flavor, but could have used more banana slices. All and all the food was good, but slightly over priced. This is definitely a special occasion place. read more

Let's start with the ambiance of this place. First of all it is located in a run down strip mall. I'm not sure who decided it was a good idea to put an upscale restaurant inside of that place. Once inside I was somewhat underwhelmed. It was extremely dark and the decor was nothing special. After my waitress FINALLY (fifteen minutes of waiting for water) came to my table she looked at me and my guest and I kid you not rolled her eyes. I am a student here but I deserve the same respect as any other paying customer. Throughout the night , she was inattentive and rarely asked if we needed anything. The food. For an appetizer I ordered the boudin balls. Oh my goodness, they were so dry I drank all my water in one gulp and had to ask another waiter to get me more water. The main course I got was absolutely delicious. It was the special of the day, lamb chops. Wow! So juicy and tender. Of all the fine dining in Oxford, this place has to be my least favorite. Everyone we met during our 3 day stay in Oxford said, 'You have to go to Snack Bar for dinner'. It's a nicely decorated restaurant with a nice menu but it's about a good mile outside of town past the town square away from Ole Miss. But Uber makes it extremely accessible. The menu is great - we had the lamb pot roast and the steak frites, we plus a couple of glasses of a nice red wine. The lamb pot roast was served in a cast iron pan and it had a nice thick rich sauce with hints of rosemary. The steak was prepared as requested and the Parmesan fries were an excellent accompaniment. Folks who told us to go there were right, it was a very nice dinner in a very comfortable restaurant. If you find yourself in Oxford, you have to go to Snack Bar for dinner! read more

I hate leaving bad reviews but I'm in the serving industry and I hate bad service. I bartend for a brewery and a bar in downtown Nashville. Tried to go to BBB and the wait was entirely too long so we came next door to Snackbar and only the bar is open they apparently won't serve if you aren't sitting directly at the bar. Seats were full (15 or so people) but a couple got up to leave and gave us their seats. We weren't greeted, there was no host. The male bartender was talking about his schedule to guests for quite some time. The female bartender was kind of busy, understandable. We were there for about 15 or so minutes waiting to be noticed. So now we are headed home on empty stomachs. It seems as it's nearly impossible to get brunch in Oxford. read more

Consistently the best restaurant in Oxford, a town with some really great dining options. Our last two times we have gone to Snack Bar without a reservation, eaten once at the bar and once at the long banquette between bar and booths. Service has been great, most especially in their ability, willingness, even eagerness to accommodate special dietary restrictions like my wife's. Instead of saying that they could only fix this or that without gluten, cream, onion, or garlic, on both occasions they simply asked her which dish/protein did she want. Said they could find a way to fix it for her. She picked the scallops both time and they prepared them in a brown butter sauce with jasmine rice that was out of this world. I am in a rut with their Saturday night Cioppino, cannot order anything else because it is the very best of my favorite dish anywhere. We also shared a half dozen of the small Alabama oysters that were cold and delicious and Parmesan truffle fries. Really good inexpensive Caparzo Sangiovese. Just over $100 for two of us before tip. Open for dinner only, reservations a must if you want a booth or table, but banquette is a fun spot if you are okay with visiting with strangers and the bar is a great place to watch some of the most amazing bartenders anywhere assemble the most remarkable cocktails imaginable. We enjoyed our time here. The service was good. We ordered oysters, swordfish, and tilefish. The swordfish was delicious. The oysters were great. I will never order tilefish again, however, because it was WAY TOO FISHY tasting. This is the second time we've been to this restaurant. Each time the service was good, but the prices are too expensive for the food. I say this probably because my husband cooks so well and I can enjoy this type of food at home and for far less money. The last time we were here, I ordered jambalaya, and it was soupy and had some sort of lentils in it. I'm used to a dryer fluffier jambalaya.
