Dropped by Sunny's Sushi for lunch. We didnt have a lot of time but they were amazing! Sunjee quickly took our drink and meal order, and we asked to be charged even before our meal to ensure we were able to leave quickly and get back to work in time. They did and were very nice. Friends had sushi and i had chicken teriyaki. Taking off one star because the fried rice was very greasy, almost inedible but the rest was great! Also, they said there was a 2$ fee to an egg to the fried rice. Place is small but quaint. Restroom had sticky floors and no paper towels to dry hands, but they did have toilet paper and soap, so theres that. I would come back. Meal was filling and service was amazing! read more

As far as sushi goes, there are honestly more options than you'd think out here in the old western town of El Paso. This one, is one of the better ones. Yes, everywhere you go to eat sushi, assuming because of the products required to make it and make it fresh, is going to be a bit on the expensive side, and this place is no different. It is a little more expensive than I like, however, I love sushi and and as long as I can have quality sushi, I'm willing to pay what's wrong the cost. No, this is not super authentic Japanese sushi. I say that, because I lived in Japan for nearly a decade. However, I still love this place, and if you've never really lived in Japan, then it's a moot point, and you'll enjoy this place just the same. The quality is pretty good, to be honest. The products are always fresh. Keep in mind, El Paso is a land locked city in the middle of the west Texas desert, surrounded by sand, and Mexico. And we aren't exactly catching our fresh salmon for the nigiri in the Rio Grande, so for where we are, I'm rather impressed with the freshness and quality. As most sushi places are here, these rolls are more suited for the westerns palate. And you'll find all kinds of creative rolls with creative ingredients that they'd turn their noses up at in Japan, but hey, if it works it works, and this place works. They have a large menu as well. With many Japanese dishes as well as Korean dishes. Also common here in El Paso. Most Japanese places here, or sushi places, also have a large selection of Korean specific dishes. Which is fine, more to choose from! This is one of (I believe) 3 Sunnys Sushi locations in town. And by far the nicest (decor) and newest one. This location really surprised me when we moved here a year ago. I was happy to find a decent sushi place close to home with really delicious food. Small businesses are important to us so we order from this location frequently. However, in sad to say that the quality of the food as well as the service has gone down significantly. I have a family member allergic to mayonnaise and the past couple times we've received the spicy mayonnaise on the sushi when we've kindly requested no mayonnaise. The new person taking orders is nice but always seems confused, even with the simplest orders. Despite the mistakes, we kept coming back to support this business through the pandemic, sympathetic to how hard these times are for small businesses. Tonight's order of only chicken fried rice was confused with teriyaki chicken on the phone (again, the confusion) and when we get the meal home, it is not the quality of Japanese fried rice we know they are capable of. It's very greasy and has large, chewy pieces of chicken piled on top that are hard to eat. Normally, this dish is not greasy and the chicken pieces are bite-sized, edible pieces of white meat. The normal seasoning was missing from the rice and all we could taste we grease. Bland, greasy rice isn't anything anyone wants to spend money on. It wasn't appetizing and sadly our last several meals from this location have been of poor quality too. I hope they are able to pull through the pandemic and get back to the quality of food that kept us coming back before. read more

i just had the worst possible dining experience from Sunny Sushi. trying the restaurant for the first time, I ordered delivery. the restaurant is five minutes from my house. The tuna and eel smelled fishy and the tuna was discolored and dry. Given that it's raw, I was afraid to eat it. The other three items, the gyoza, soft shelled crab and tempura, arrived cold. The restaurant said they couldn't do anything about it and blamed uber, but it must have been sitting out at the restaurant before being picked up to be that cold. Also, the restaurant gaslighted me, saying that it was the same smelly eel and tuna they had been serving all day. They should comp the meal since I will have to throw it out. They did not seem to care about me or customer satisfaction. And they are not cheap. I eat a lot of sushi and have never been served dry discolored tuna in my life. smelly raw fish is unsafe. uber didn't do that to the fish. upsetting lack of consideration from Sunny Sushi. read more

The ambiance was not what I expected for a Friday night- it is located next to some urban style eateries and I was expecting a more mod approach to the lighting and music. The wait staff was fantastic. They brought out a small dish with thick slices of cucumber that was exquisitely pickled with a hint of peanut. I would but this stuff in a container to take home! I ordered a yellow monkey roll. It was fine, but not memorable or commensurate with the price. The prices here were $3-5 per roll more than expected. When we ordered the sushi it took awhile for three rolls and we were the only ones on the restaurant. The sushi was terrible it was absolutely drenched in spicy mayo and eel sauce and the eel sauce tasted off and was weirdly grainy. And the shrimp tempura in our sushi was old and cold along with soggy and it was actually tempura this time. The only good thing about the food was the lychee and red bean ice cream they were delicious but sadly the only good thing we had there. There's a large number of sushi places here in El Paso, but only a handful that don't completely disgust me. I mean that goes for any city, but I've had a lot of hit or miss experiences...mostly miss. Yes, this is a desert so I don't expect a sushi spot to serve tuna and eel that was caught just moments before I was seated. As long as the ingredients are fresh and served at the correct temperature, I'm happy. This Sonny's Sushi meets my expectations in the freshness department. Beyond the rolls being fresh, they're also prepared well. Nothing's worse than a roll that's falling apart because there isn't enough rice or it isn't sticky...well except a roll with spoiled fish that's falling apart. Sushi here comes with complimentary miso soup (as it should) and a slightly sweet cucumber kimchee (it may or may not be kimchee). The miso soup could have more or bigger pieces of tofu, but it was still good. I loved the cucumber kimchee, just the perfect amount of pickling done. Once the gyoza arrived, I knew regardless of the sushi outcome I could at least always come here for the apps and entrees. Fried to divine perfection without overcooking the inside and making it greasy. The shrimp tempura roll and spicy tuna roll came out. The spicy tuna was fine, nothing out of the ordinary. The shrimp tempura was bomb! I love fried rolls, but it so easy to overdue them so when I saw this bite-sized, panko crusted roll came out I was ecstatic. Not only did it look good, it tasted good too! I forgot to ask what sauces they had available so I ended up just using soy sauce + wasabi and asking for a side of eel sauce (I eat it with almost every roll...don't judge me). Service was ehhh. Friendly enough, but they weren't exactly jumping over tables to ask if I was doing okay. They brought out my order and then would kind of disappear. But whatever, I got my order, it was good, my drink was refilled by a server. So it's all good. SS is in the same shopping center as the Japanese Crepe House and Ripe so a great residential location not too far from Resler or the far end of Mesa. Took my grandkids here for a treat after school, the poor waitress had no answers about simple questions. We ordered teriyaki chicken and noodles NO Vegetables. What came out/noodles soaked in vegetables. We ordered the dragon roll but it didn't taste quite right. Can't exactly say why. I ordered the lobster roll as I specifically asked if it was spicy. It is NOT on the menu listed as spicy Mayo. The owner came by quickly and said everything ok as she passed by. She asked me why I didn't eat the lobster roll. I said this pink sauce is too spicy. She argued that it was spicy mayo. I told her that it was NOT listed on the menu.She then came back as we were ready to leave and offered to make another one. I declined as I don't like to argue over how I perceive something. She didn't offer to take it off my bill. So. The tips are too high but I did tip. So. $90.00's wasted. If you're looking for good quality sushi, look no further! I know that there are a few locations: one on the west side and 2 on the east side. I've eaten at all the locations with all being really good! (I do believe they are under different owners.) The sushi/sashimi is always fresh and the owner, who is a Korean lady, is always checking on customers to make sure everything is ok! When ever I want sushi with my cousin and we don't know where to go, we go to Sunny's because they won't disappoint. Unfortunately, I don't remember what the rolls I ordered were. I believe one of the rolls ordered is the Beauty and the Beast roll. I just know they were delicious! And I love sashimi so of course I ordered salmon and yellow tail sashimi which were fresh and wonderful! I also ordered 2 hand rolls which were also tasty. I always look forward to eating sushi at Sunny's when I can. This place needs to practice better cleanliness. What I experienced and witnessed was appalling. I dined in on Monday and ordered 3 rolls and a beverage. The mango tea I requested the first time around was good until I requested a second one. That's when I noticed our serving using my straw as the stir stick. Literally where I put my lips he held with his fingers and stirred the drink. At that point I just asked for the check and didn't drink the second drink. On the drive home my partner experienced strong stomach pain. I then got the same pain. I've been throwing up and myself the last 3 days. I've reached out to management and they said nothing. We ordered 3 rolls Las Vegas, Golden California roll and Alaskan plus a side of shrimp tempura. We decided to take it to go and the service was perfect! Quick and easy. We gobbled down the shrimp tempura on the way home and when we got home oooh em gee the rolls were perfect. Fresh and so yummy. The fried rolls were top notch crispy and full of flavor. I know it isn't any of my family's hair because we all have curly hair and the hair was short and straight.
