I've been to Sunflower Massage twice over the past couple of months-and both visits had the same issue occur in that the posted prices were not honored. Both times I selected the "30 min foot + 30 min body combo" massage listed on the sign for $60. On the first visit, when it was time to pay, I was told I had received a Swedish massage and was charged $70, even though I did not receive a Swedish massage. I returned a second time assuming the first visit was a misunderstanding. Again, I chose the "30 min foot + 30 min body combo" massage for $60, and again at checkout I was told the total was $70, due to a $10 upcharge for "deep pressure." This upcharge was not disclosed in advance. I was only asked if I preferred soft or firmer pressure at the beginning of the massage. I answered "firmer", which is my preference and doesn't result in an upcharge anywhere I go - unless I specifically select a deep tissue massage. The unexpected price change at checkout caused sticker shock, which completely ruined the relaxation of the massage. I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt, but as this happened twice now... I don't feel inclined to go back to try a third time, let alone try anything else on their menu. The second visit also skipped arms, shoulders, and hands, which are normally included in a massage, and there was no foot bath, which is typically standard at a foot reflexology place. While I did appreciate the private room and it seemed clean, it was tiny and I was freezing, despite a space heater being in the room. Clear, upfront pricing is important. When the advertised price changes at payment, especially more than once, it's not a good experience. I generally tip 30% at these establishments and still did so, as I don't know if the overcharge was from the employee, or employer-but I definitely won't be returning and I will look for another place that doesn't try to bait & switch on pricing. read more

We walked in at 6 pm the day after Valentine's Day on a Sunday fully expecting to be turned away, and they didn't hesitate at all to get us in at 8 pm. When they asked how long we wanted the massage for, I said one hour because they close at 9 pm, but they said we can do however long we want, it's up to us. We still chose the one hour since we felt bad making them stay longer, but the fact that they were so flexible is great customer service. The actual massage was incredible. The rooms are private, and my boyfriend literally fell asleep. I felt so relaxed after, and they applied the perfect amount of pressure. The prices are also unbeatable. I'm giving this place two stars, and those stars are strictly for convenience and pricing. I was in town for a conference and the location was extremely convenient; I was able to walk there and they're open until 9:00 PM, which made it easy to go after conference sessions ended. I was also able to get a last-minute appointment, which I appreciated. The space is fairly clean (not modern or spa-level clean, but acceptable), and the pricing was reasonable: $140 for a two-hour massage, compared to $265 for 80 minutes at the hotel spa. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. They advertise hot stones as a free add-on, but this was misleading. The therapist simply placed hot stones on my back wrapped in a towel. That is not a hot stone massage; no massage techniques were performed with the stones, making the "add-on" feel like a joke. Upon arrival, I also specifically requested a deep tissue massage, and there was nothing deep about this massage. There were brief moments of firmer pressure, and I tried to encourage the therapist to continue that level, but it didn't change anything. For a two-hour massage, every part of the body should be worked thoroughly and that did not happen. Communication was another major issue. I don't mind therapists who speak limited English as long as they are able to understand what I'm asking, since they are working on my body. Unfortunately, the therapist stated her English was "no good," which meant she couldn't understand my requests or feedback at all, and it showed in the quality of the massage. It also felt like the front desk did not communicate my deep tissue request to the therapist, or she simply wasn't capable of providing it. Either way, I did not receive the service I paid for. The massage itself was poorly structured. Regardless of certifications, masseuses usually have a routine or process. This massage seemed haphazard. While face-down, some work was done lightly over the sheet, then quite a lot of time spent working on only my back with oil. No massage was done to the backs of my legs. Weird right? When I was turned onto my back, there was minimal work on the scalp and very light pressure over the sheet on my arms and front of my legs for like 5 minutes. For a 120-minute massage, the time and attention were extremely unbalanced. And for me it was disappointing because my legs and feet were the parts hurting, which they would have known had they bothered to ask. I also would have shared this information except for the fact that I paid for in 120 minute massage and assume they would cover the whole body. I was also told that a 120-minute table massage would include my feet. That was not true. All that was done was a quick squeeze; no actual foot massage at all. Lastly, the environment takes away significantly from relaxation. It's an older building with thin walls, street noise is very noticeable, and it's not quiet or calming. I know places like this can be hit or miss since they are not licensed massage therapy clinics, but I've never had a miss this drastic. I always try to support small and local businesses, which is why I gave this place a chance. Unfortunately, it completely backfired. I would not return and would not recommend this location. Next time, I'll either try the comfort massage spa down the street; it's another inexpensive local place. Or pay more at the hotel spa to ensure I receive a quality massage. read more

Meticulously clean. Excellent, intuitive, an diligent masseuses - and a one-hour massage means that one receives a solid 60 minutes of reliably strong hands. Any of them can provide a softer or as firm a deep tissue massage as one could ask for. I've gone to Lisa's spa for at least 6 years, since well before they relocated from a block away, and am there for serious deep tissue at least every two weeks, year round. Lisa, the manager has long experience as a masseuse. She possesses unquestionable integrity, and is the most caring and attentive spa owner I've ever known - ever. Good news... massage enthusiasts; Sunflower Massage is my recent discovery that just opened. It is located at 482 Alvarado... upstairs in Monterey. If you like a professional, therapeutic, intuitive massage, you might agree with me, that this is a great place to visit. My first time there, I was met with an Asian Chinese therapist. English may not be their strong suit, but I was able to communicate with my therapist. There is ample parking; some is discretionary for privacy. For me, a one hour break from the everyday stresses of life is the best therapy I can do to treat myself. Do leave a 'gift from the heart.' The therapists appreciate your kindness.
