We chose Sunflower on a whim. The first two restaurants had zero cars parked in their lots on a beautiful Sunday early evening when most are hoping clientele will not leave because of waiting. Sunflower was the opposite and right next door. Seating was perfectly located outside with the warm evening sun and a soft breeze off the water. The menu was loaded with delights making decisions harder. With entree' chosen (Thai fried rice with shrimp for me...Thai rice with crab & shrimp for my grandson). He selected three appetizers for us to share (fried dumplings, fried pot stickers, and Thai Lobster roll). My first bite was the dumpling dipped in a beautifully blended sauce ... one word describes ..."HEAVEN". Then the fried pot sticker ... nice but second to the dumpling. The real beauty on a plate was the Lobster roll which was artistry but at a price affordable for a newbie to Thai food like myself -- yet one you'd expect from the Chefs at any of the finest restaurants. Although bite-size delicacies, I was beginning to feel full when what is placed before me but the most flavorful and colorful rice i have had hiding a sweet surprise of chunks of pineapple and large luscious shrimp.. oh Yum! (The pictures here do not do Sunflower justice, but trust me...you'll love it). The service was friendly, knowledgable, and filled with local charm and humor. Will we be returning? Without a doubt! Colonial Beach VA should be proud to advertise that Sunflower Thai/French Restaurant graces Washington Avenue. So why are you sitting there? Is your GPS broken? GO!

I had a nice grilled tuna dinner (with capers and tomato sauce) and my friend enjoyed her ribeye steak (with blue cheese). We were able to walk in on a rainy Thursday evening but the first time we tried to go without a reservation on a Friday we were turned away.

We walked in about 7:45, on a Tuesday night, got asked if we had reservations ?? we did not there was three open tables at the time. Lady was kind of nice to see us.the sushi guy leaves at 7:30 so we are unable to order sushi. Just an FYI . The cocktail menu the mixed drinks are only available on the weekend just another FYI, Friday and Saturday only. I am from California so not used to some of the. Restrictions . LOL.. and my company is from Seattle, relatives cousins of course. Tamara is our server , lovely girl. We ordered several appetizers we ordered the spring roll, fried potstickers, Thai dumplings,. I don't know if I'm gonna make down what are you staying up an. 4 of us for dinner, first time here...all appetizers were delicious... three of us ordered the chicken pad Thai I got the medium spice. It was like perfect. Nice little bite. My cousin got the drunken Ramen with chicken and shrimp. She said it's perfectly spiced. I would not want any spicier. my mouth is a little warm, but it's not anything that I can't handle. Maybe... but all the food is absolutely delicious... There are big windows inside. It's a nice little place. I can understand why was asked if I had reservations. Maybe in the summer season it might be busier. It's a lovely restaurant in Colonial beach. There's also outside seating.

All the reviews that raved about this place were right!! The food, service, ambiance, and all were so spot on and wonderful!! I highly recommend you check this place out if you're a fan of sushi rolls. They have a great variety of menu items and everyone is so friendly!

Service was chilled and nice. We had a large party of 9, so we were appreciative for the patience of the staff. They also got cool points for acknowledging my friend's birthday with a complimentary crème brûlée. The restaurant had outdoor seating in addition to indoor. Not terribly loud. For a Thai lemonade tea, wonton soup, spring roll, drunken noodles and ice cream, it was $46. Not bad at all. I've heard that the portions could be larger, however, I didn't experience that since I had courses. The flavors in all of the dishes worked well together, and were dynamic. The spring rolls come with 5 units, and are delicious- especially the sweet & spicy dip that comes with it. The soup's contents were delicious, and the broth was potent. The drunken noodles were delicious. I ordered chicken with mine- the protein was cooked and marinated well and the "Hot" spice level. The spice was so beautiful. It added a level of complexity to the rich sauce that's standard to the noodles. The tea/lemonade had a unique twang to it that is individual to Thai teas. I enjoyed it. The hazelnut cognac ice cream was a little too creamy for my taste, I prefer a more icy/sorbet consistency. The taste was subtle, though, which I appreciated. It had a crunch in there that I could take or leave

    Filet and scallops. Delicious!

We didn't have reservations but we're lucky to score seating. Wait staff were very friendly, and accommodating. Good was absolutely top notch!

He gave us the history of the restaurant, it used to be at the watergate hotel and former president Reagan was a huge fan of the restaurant. Right after he got shot his wife had a surprise birthday party here. The original chef passed away and they lost their lease so this is the location now. Just some fyi for all you history buffs. The food was fantastic yet again. For the hors d'Œuvres we got the Merguez which was lamb sausage with ratatouille. It was very good. We also got a Brie and prosciutto platter with pickles and spiced pears in a red wine sauce. It was interesting for sure. The Brie was St Stephen's from Stephentown NY. I love Brie and this was a good one. Very interesting flavors. I got the seafood special this time. It was scallops, risotto, asparagus, and a shrimp crab cake. I wasn't a big fan of the shrimp crab cake it was dry but everything else paired well. My husband got the filet mignon. The side was these stuffed potatoes and asparagus. The stuffed potatoes were stuffed with a creamy filling almost like crab Rangoon but better. So yum. The waiter found out it was our anniversary and he went all out. He also gave me half a dozen roses and proposed to me in front of my husband . Yall just go here, and ask for Dennis to be your waiter. He's the best.

The Brasserie, though less formal, is equally as fine and equally as tasty. Plus, you have the option of sitting outside either on the patio or in the inside/outside covered area.  Wherever you sit, you will be happy and very well fed.  The evening we dined, we tried to hold back from eating too much of the super yummy garlic toast and cottage cheese that is always brought to the table at the start of your meal.  It is super good and so tempting to keep on munching but there is so much other good food on the way.  The Caesar salad is crisp and the portion is big enough to share if you are guarding room for the amazing grand marnier souffle which you order at the start of you repas to savor at the end.  My favorite entrée is always the bouillabaisse.  The broth is so amazing and it is filled with seafood. Another favorite is the duck (confit de canard) that is a special on Sunday. Again, save some space for the souffle which is served tableside and worth every calorie.

It has a well-deserved top notch reputation. Given the restaurant likely seeks opportunities for improvement, the following details are offered..... 1) Hard seats, though padded, became uncomfortable over time. By the end of our two - hour seating, we were more than eager to get up and go. An unnecessary distraction. We'll bring our own set cushion next time. 2) Water glasses smelled off. It's not the water as the odor remained in glasses used for bottled water. Based on experience, we guessed a dirty dishwasher was to blame. 3) A pesky fly was with us the entire meal. Perhaps it was more than one fly, yet it was surprising for indoor seating. A minor distraction, but surprising. We'll be back.

Dispelling the myth that French cuisine is pretentious, we felt like we were in a home, and that we would be fed full to the brim. Came in while it was packed late into the night. We were sat immediately and had a wonderful time. Our waitresses were patient and had great recommendations for our first time trying French food. They seem incredibly experienced and added comfort in the way they spoke to their customers and ran their tables. We were even greeted by the owner who was great and cheery to each table he visited. The one night we went, it was incredibly packed with people having intimate, lighthearted, and laughter-filled gatherings, tables with multiple rounds of wine, everyone sharing their fries, and so he should feel proud of this place. Touches like this made it as though we were dining in someone's house. And I love that they start you off generously with bread and butter. Its a type of french loaf that is nice and fluffy, and I'd recommend setting some on the side if you're ordering a brothy dish. We ordered Moules Marinières, which came in a delightfully large cauldron of juicy plump clean muscles swimming in an herbaceous-garlicky white wine sauce. Unassumable from the simplicity of ingredients they threw together, but incredibly complex in flavor. This is one of the few times I actually tasted bay leaf, and amongst the fewer times I found the use of rosemary not be so overpowering. The mussel liquor at the bottom was perfect when soaked up in bread. What an incredible dish. We also tried a classic, Le Steak Maison, which was also distinctively flavorful. Our steak had a perfect cook at medium rare, and was uniquely seasoned with some sort of blend of herbes de provence. The fries were pretty standard and substantial, but paired with the Béarnaise sauce, it was such a tangy play of richness and acidity. Again really simple ingredients just executed so well. Great job, looking forward to coming again to try more on this large menu.

We were seated promptly, no awkward hovering, and our waitress showed up friendly, sharp, and knowing her way around the menu--which is a quality that ought to be listed right next to "clean silverware." We started with the crab and corn chowder, and let me say this right now: the crab was not there for decoration. It announced itself. Big flavor, no apologies, the way crab chowder ought to be. Second round was the smoked salmon salad. Perfect. The salmon was excellent, but that tarragon caper dressing had a way of making you slow down and think about life choices. I would put that dressing on just about anything that didn't move fast enough. For the main event, I chose the scallops, and I am prepared to testify they were as good as any I've ever had. Perfectly cooked, sitting pretty with an aioli that knew its job and did it well. My wife ordered the beef medallions, and I'll admit this with humility: looking back, I may have chosen wrong. Those medallions were expertly prepared and packed with flavor, the kind that makes you reconsider your own plate. We finished with cheesecake and berries. The cheesecake did its part. The berries... well, not every inning is a home run. Fortunately, the wine stepped in like a good relief pitcher and made everything right again. Through it all, the service never slipped. We were treated the way folks ought to be treated when they go out to celebrate something that matters. And that, in my book, counts just as much as what's on the plate. Sorry for the lack of pictures the food and wine kept my attention

I seriously did not expect a restaurant in Fredericksburg to meet our expectations. Service was spot on as well. The beef medallions were tender and cooked perfectly medium. The scallops were tender and fresh --so rare these days that we rarely order them. We chose a bottle of wine instead of wine pairings and our server helped us navigate the extensive wine list. The Beaumes de Venise red was a great choice because we are not so fond of white wine. The pot de chocolat and creme brulee were a perfect ending to an outstanding meal.
