If you find yourself in Kanab, whether it be a Ross trip, Antelope canyon, Zion or one of the many other reasons, this place is really a great bang for your buck. My husband and our two dogs wanted to break up our road trip from Idaho, normally a 13 hour drive, we figured breaking it up would be nice. I booked this place last minute and it really was everything that we needed! Don't go in expecting luxury, it's a retro motel, with comfortable bed, roomy space, reserved parking and near all the things you could need. Little bit dated, but very clean and well maintained, not to mention dog friendly! We didn't get to check out anything other than our room, but it was easy enough, self check-in and slept great. Definitely will keep on our list if we're looking to make a pit spot again. read more

This is motel is an absolute gem. Geniel was able to accommodate us on a moment's notice, providing us with a cozy and clean room in this stylish, retro motel. The unit had everything we needed, including a mini fridge, microwave, cups, and napkins. The bathroom was just perfect and such a cute blast from the past with pink and mint green tiles. We enjoyed the comfortable bed and quality linens while we watched TV on the flat screen. Upon check-in, Geniel informed us that she would be making chicken on the grill for dinner if we were hungry. We joined her and a few other guests outside at the picnic table and gas fire pit for delicious chicken thighs, corn, and rice. After a long drive, this was just what we needed. When I read the reviews saying this place was right out of a Coen brothers movie, deciding to stay here was a no brainer for me. I also loved the great neon sign in the parking lot and knew then we'd enjoy our stay. The room was fantastic, vintage, quirky and just kitschy enough. The coffee was good (just Folgers French Roast, but the best Folgers I've ever had). Management was awesome, and don't miss out on the homemade muffins. It was an ok stay, but I don't think I'll rush back. Positives: Our room was clean - the bed was comfy, the bathroom was fine. We liked that it wasn't crowded and we could park right in front of our room. Made it handy loading and unloading the car. We needed a pet friendly hotel and we liked that they have a nice grassy area with garbage cans making easy to pick up after your pet. Negatives: I was hoping it would've been a bit more updated . Unfortunately our room, although clean, was in need of repairs. So instead of being retro, it felt rather run down. And it was kind of pricey - I think if was more reasonably priced I would've given it a better review. read more

Great. Best value in town. The folks who run the place are nice as can be. The towels and linens were spotless, and I slept like a baby. A baby, I tell you. The complimentary coffee, donuts, fruit, juice, and hot or cold cereal every morning was a welcome surprise. But my favorite part was the ambience. I found myself sitting outside my room at night just to drink in the neon and flashing lights against the desert backdrop. Their website says to call for the best rate, and the price they gave me was even lower than listed. It pays to call! They also accept pets! I came to Kanab so I could volunteer at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and they were happy to let me bring my overnight canine guest. The comparison to a Coen brothers movie is pretty accurate. Wayne reminded me of the random guy on TV in RoboCop "Ain't nothing free, because there's no guarantees. You know? You're on your own. That's the law of the jungle." in the nicest possible way. Eccentricity aside, he puts on a great breakfast spread of donuts, pastries, toast, muffins and preserves along with, quote, "Good Coffee". For the money, what you get can't be beat, and that's diabetes and insulin spikes. Sure the rooms look old, but they're clean, and you get TV, wifi and a fridge that closes with a door latch. When you're passing through Kanab and need to lay your head, what more can you ask for for $45? Funny anecdote: Me - "So Wayne, where do you get your 'Good Coffee' from?" Wayne - "It's just Folgers man. Folgers." Classic. And the coffee is pretty tasty. read more

We stayed at the Sun-N-Sand the first week of January on our way to Zion. We read the other helpful Yelp reviews and decided to give them a go. Wayne offered us each a beer (because its hard to find decent beer in Utah!!) but we came prepared and he looked a little bummed when we turned him down. The other reviews were right on- He is very talkative, helpful, super friendly, and rough around the edges :) The motel is the same way... there was cable tv, free internet, and a mini fridge. We had a brand new mattress and clean sheets. The room was drafty but he told us to go ahead and crank up the heat, so I did. The walls were patchy, the toilet was wobbly, the shower dripped all night (I couldn't hear it, but I couldn't stop from wasting water either), and I had to safety-pin the curtains closed to satisfy my modesty (the blinds were missing a few slats). We ate dinner at the Mexican place across the street with the Sun-N-Sand discount, and the food was decent. The neighborhood is a little cracky/methy, but we felt safe and secure in our room with our jeep parked right outside, snug as bugs in our squeaky bed frame, and left well rested in the morning. Its not the Ritz, but if you don't mind all the caveats above, it fits the bill for a cheap one-night stop in Kanab. read more

Wayne and his wife are friendly and helpful and this is a great budget motel. I've stayed here twice while I volunteered at Best Friends and their weekly rates were great and cost me less than half of other options. They allow pets so you can bring Best Friends cats or dogs for sleepovers which is an issue at a lot of other hotels/motels. read more

Imagine if you could be an extra in a Coen brothers movie for the low price of only $40 a night, and all you had to do was sleep and show up for breakfast in the morning - that's Sun-N-Sand Motel. Wayne "the Dude" let us check out the room first before we agreed to stay the night. The fixtures were old, but clean, and everything worked. The next morning, we dined on "good coffee" (really, it wasn't bad), juice, toast and fresh fruit with a colorful cast of characters. We were kind of nervous when we rolled up because Wayne looks like he just got back from a Vietnam reenactment and the place hasn't been remodeled lately. Or ever. But it's not very expensive, it's clean, Wayne is REALLY nice (he lent us his bottle opener), the continental breakfast is really good, and they have cable. This place rules. This past summer my friend Leah and I pulled up to Sun-N-Sand Motel after a loooonnnngggg day of road tripping and few hours of "sun 'n' sanding" ourselves...at Lake Powell. We were so tired and only wanted a place to rest our weary heads. We drove into Kanab and passed a couple of chain hotels like the Best Western but our hearts just weren't in it. Then we saw the neon sign of this little gem, two people BBQing in the front picnic area, and a $36 a night advertisement on the marquee. We were SOLD! Wayne, the front desk salesman, was more than helpful. He offered us free breakfast in the morning along with the best coffee in Kanab. We weren't sure but, he really wasn't kidding! We got up to head out on the road early and sure enough, the front office was clustered with people from all over the country planning days out to Bryce and Zion indulging in free toast, donuts and fruit while washing it all down with juice and/OR...the best cup of coffee in Kanab! I know you're all wondering how clean this place was for $36 a night? Clean enough. We checked the bed for bugs and there were none, in fact we checked the entire room. The bathroom was alright although I will confess that I wore flippies in the shower. In the end would I stay here again? Hell yes I would! SNS has character. Wayne also told us that a lot of old westerns were once filmed in the area so we know it's got lots of history as well. It's definitely an old motel. AND...it's a rad place, in a rad little town, with rad people! So hell yes! read more

I'm a bit torn in my review... Wayne is a super guy, and the hotel is clean, but it is pretty run down. I guess the most revealing thing I can say is that my wife would never stay here. Yes, it's inexpensive, $32 + tax. Yes, the sheets were clean. But everything else is out of the 50's or 60's, and they didn't keep any of the good stuff. If you are in town during the high season, summer and fall, and you don't want to put out $90+ for one of the other local motels, then Sun-N-Sand may fit your tastes. But you can most likely stay in a nicer place for only a few bucks more. The door to my room had huge gaps around the edge and the wind blew in all night long. The font window shades had several broken louvers, forget your privacy. Very old carpet, very dirty, but swept clean. Beds were pretty hard and pretty old. Tv was pretty hard to watch, flickering with static. The shower dripped all night long. But to give them credit, while everything was very old, they did their best to keep it clean. The most disappointing thing was the 'breakfast' bar. Nothing, and I really mean nothing, has been refrigerated... ever. This only left me a few items I was willing to eat, and it wasn't much beyond toast, skipping the margarine that was sitting out for days or the jams that may have been there for months. And the pastries were long past their prime. Now, if you have always wanted to stay in one of those motels you have seen in the movies, this is your place. They even have the flickering neon, creaky doors, weird people shouting in the middle of the night, dog that greets you when you ring the bell, and more. read more

There are many motels not too dissimilar from this one, however there is only one Wayne who is quite possible the most hospitable and memorable person in all of Kanab. He and his partner, Terry, work around the clock to ensure your stay pleasant, but again the charm of the place are the imperfections (our water pipes sounded like Chewbacca when starting up) coupled with the genuine warm welcome you get from Wayne... and believe me you will know this living legend the moment you see him. Been travelling around the country for 2 months now. Staying in dozens of establishments and this one was by far the worst. I was quoted 109 a night for two queen beds, went to grab my wallet out of the car and when I walked back in the attendant raised the price to 129 a night. Exhausted from the road I chose not to argue but just pay and get some rest. The room itself had no thermostat to adjust the temperature. The television didn't receive a clear signal and all the channels were fuzzy and scrambled. The hot water was barley luke warm. The towel I used had blood stains on it. The beds were Overall the single worst experience I've had in any of the dozens of motels I've stayed at. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place, drive down the road and spend the extra $20 to stay at the holiday inn or Hampton. If you do end up staying here bring Lysol and your own pillows and sheets because I fear for your life. read more

We came here to adopt a dog from the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary a few miles up the road. This is a classic roadside motel, the kind you would expect to find in a nice, friendly small town. It's clean, there is a nice little microwave and mini-fridge, as well as a flat screen TV and free wifi. For the money, this is a great deal. If you want something fancy, there are other "hotels" in town. But if you're a road weary traveler, this place will do just fine. It's also helpful that there is a nice little restaurant right across the street and many other stores are within walking distance. read more

Also, the homemade bread and muffins are a delicious part of a perfectly decent continental breakfast layout, which included oatmeal, gluten-free oatmeal and three kinds of cereals. There are a microwave and refrigerator which work very sporadically based on the alignment of the stars and the security of their plug-in systems. Our bed was a thinly mattressed hammock. The shower may have had the lowest mounted showerhead yet. And yet, and yet, I just might return. read more

This hotel has three things going for it. Cheap, clean, and friendly managers. Everything in the room was functional. I have not seen a small tube television in a hotel for years. This was hard to watch. The bathroom fixtures were probably older than I am. I was surprised that they could find washers that fit. They did not leak. The shower head was five feet high, so I had to bend over to wash my hair. I've not had to do this for a long time. There is no air conditioner in the room. There is an on/off switch for a blower/evaporative cooler. The room was comfortable in August. In winter there is a gas wall heater for warmth. I have never been in a hotel with this before. The furniture was adequate and the bed comfortable. There is a small refrigerator and a microwave in the room. The continental breakfast was very good. I enjoyed the coffee, homemade bread and muffins and the company of the other guests and manager. The room I stayed in was not updated yet, though I was told that several rooms were improved. Because of the cleanliness and price, I would stay here again. read more

I liked staying here. It was comfortable, convenient and the front desk attendant treated me like she's known me for years. Very interesting place. I noticed a lot of other people used words like "eccentric" or "interesting" and they're definitely correct. I'd like to give this place 3.2 or 3.5 stars but I can't, so I'll just go with 3. I definitely liked the place--it was cheap and pretty clean. The group of people running the place were mostly nice, though I did witness one interaction with another guest that made me drop their rating a bit. I got the feeling the owners weren't terribly enamored with foreigners/Europeans since they were surprisingly rude to a pair of Europeans who checked in while we were there....though, I should point out I may have seen this interaction out of context and perhaps they had had previous run-ins with these guests. I should also say that all of my interactions with the owners/employees were always very friendly....if anything, I'd say they were a bit "too friendly" for me, since there were multiple times I just wanted to sit outside watching the sunset and I was interrupted by a friendly employee who wanted to discuss this, that, or the other....not a terrible problem to have, but I just prefer to be left alone when enjoying the scenery. Other stuff: the motel was clean, it had a functioning microwave and fridge. The owners were locals and had a good feel for everything one might want to see in the area. OH! One very important thing (at least it was for me): they have complete control of the air-conditioning, meaning if you don't like the temperature they have set, you're out of luck. Unfortunately for me, I felt it was too cold but you get what you get--they did ask repeatedly if it was too hot or too cold but, well, I guess you can't please everyone all of the time if there's only one controller for the entire motel. They also had fantastic blinds/shutters on the windows which went a long ways in keeping the very direct sun out of the room early in the morning. Overall, I'd say it's a pretty good place and I'd stay there again if Aiken's (the nicer/cheaper place down the road) was all booked up. read more

Not your typical motel!! It doesnt have that creepy empty vibe. Outside in the center of all the rooms there's a small grassy area with 2 tables and benches, and by the rooms there are chairs. At night its lit up with neon lights and it just feels good to be outside. Our room was extremely colorful and cozy. Even the bathroom-the shower walls were pink tiles. The lady who checked us in was super nice and when the connection wasn't working (my credit card wasn't going thru), the manager gave us our key, apologized and told us not to worry about it just come back try again later. We checked in somewhat late, after driving for many hours, and they made things easy and non-stressful for us. Overall awesome place to stay! We were only there 1 night, but i wish we could've stayed there longer. And it's only $15 to have your pet there! read more

I like the Sun n Sand Motel in Kanab, UT. The managers running the motel are onsite and are super friendly and I like the atmosphere and the room feels comfy, homey, and there's a mini sink to wash dishes if you want to bring your own food into the motel. It is located in a great location near the grocery across the street and great restaurants. They offer free breakfast and the home made bread is the bomb! I highly recommend staying here if you want a more homey and relaxed environment. read more

For the price ($40-50) it was a great deal, two beds, free WI-FI, cable, coffee and breakfast in the morning. Although the actual rooms themselves could use some work (lots of wear and tear-- the wood around the lock on the door appeared eroded and the shower head was a bit short) the room was still very clean and well-kept. Overall i'd recommend it for the value. Great deal. Wayne, the owner, gave us GREAT travel advice, and per his suggestion we stopped at Bryce Canyon after the Grand Canyon trip. We came through this charming place on the way to Overland Expo West in arizona. I absolutly loved visiting here. The Sun-nSand Motel was charming and welcoming. From home made bread and muffins to amazing coffee and comfortable beds. Don also let us know all the amazing spots to visit in the area. Paria, or Pahreah, is a ghost town on the Paria River in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in central Kane County. Thank you Don and Cassie! we will be back next year to visit again. This is probably the best value you'll get in Kanab. I spent a night here during a road trip up to Zion. For $40/night (including tax), you get a clean room, free WiFi in your room, free breakfast (bread, butter/jam, PB, tea/coffee, fruit), and the pleasure of meeting other road-trippers (since, I'm assuming, Kanab isn't exactly a "destination" city). Wayne's the nicest motel worker I've ever met. He tries his best to make you feel welcome and provide you with the service you want (and he has a whole shelf of pamphlets for things to do/see around the area). Also, their cancellation policy is great (cancel by 6pm the day of arrival with no charge). I'd definitely stay there again. read more

Found SNS online, read great reviews (did I mention he was on a budget?) so I called, OMG this staff is so friendly & helpful! We tried sending a package to our friend c/o the SNS hotel and unfortunately the USPS lost it. I called SNS and confirm our friend had been there, the package had not arrived and then was asked" If it does arrive what shall I do with the package?" This is service I have not seen in years! I came with a friend to see the wave, and met Don and his wife (the new managers who came after wayne). Both were very friendly, very helpful, and a pleasure to stay under. I stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms which are in great condition for a vintage hotel. Don explained to me the renovations were in progress to update the look further. if you are in the area, this is a great motel to stay at, with the managers being the best i've encountered. they served home made breakfast (bread and banana muffins made from scratch) and even home made pizza at the end of one of the nights. we were an international bunch and we felt right at home. highly reccomended. read more
