The price point is rather High. The customer service is quite poor. For $180 a night, you have to compete with townsfolk that come up and loiter in the game room and take over games that you're paying for. Absolutely not kid-friendly, including no television in the rooms. While it didn't apply they're also not pet friendly. Most of the customer service interfaces act as though you're bothering them. The gift shop, the restaurant, and the bar offer terrible hours and they also literally act as though they have a monopoly with low quality food at unreasonably high prices and poor selection. I did not choose this facility but rather was with a group. I will never be back. I have never been more disappointed in the hotel. Went here last weekend for my birthday and my girlfriends birthday as we have the same month. Walked in the room and they were as I expected, very nice and clean. Went to get dinner the first night and the service was not the best. I was expecting very different from how the hotel looked and felt very elegant. We waited in line for about 45 mins with 4 couples in front of us. So I walked to the bar (bartender wasn't very friendly) asked if we can just seat ourselves due to the long line and we did not reserve a spot for the dining room and there were plenty of seats available in both the bar and dining room. She said we had to wait in line to be seated. First place I have ever been too when you have to wait in line to be seated in the bar. Tried to get someone's attention to ask why we can't just seat ourself but the hostess was never to be found. Once we got to sit in the bar, again after 45 minutes of waiting. the hostess brought us over in the very corner and they were two small couch like seats very low to the ground and then a glass table also low to the ground. Very odd even when they had plenty of normal size seats and tables available. We dealt with it. But was kinda odd to eat. Kinda like how you would eat on a couch at your home eating off a low coffee table. Not what I was expecting at this very nice lodge. The server was new and said it was his first day. He was decent and he didn't forget us in the corner at least. The food was good but not good for the price I paid. I'm just disappointed with how much I paid per night and how the food was not what I thought it would be as the service. The girlfriend and I had a good time as the views are beautiful and the small town of Winthrop was great! Don't know if I would come back but a decent place to stay. We had a wonderful time this weekend! Where to start??? :) Reservations were awesome, they were very responsive, accommodating, and helpful whenever we had questions leading up to our arrival. We had two cabins 607 & 608, they both had the same layout, however 607 was slightly larger, and had an extended loft area, which allowed for more sleeping space than 608. (I've uploaded pics of cabin 607). We did ski lessons with Ray, who was awesome! The kids took lessons with another lady, but I forgot her name, but they loved it! Kids were ages 5-13! We also went sledding near the lodge, and they had sleds for us to borrow. Snowshoeing was awesome as well! The hot tub is huge and they have robes/locker rooms for us to change our clothes. Overall, great experience, would LOVE to return in the Summer to enjoy those activities as well. BEAUTIFUL SCENERY, and views! And the showers in the cabin are AMAZING!!! Hot water runs out quickly, so make sure you're the first to shower! :) We also ate at the Bar & Grill a couple of times, drinks were awesome, huge selection. Food was good, I'd give it a 6 out 10. Service was a little slow though, even though it wasn't crowded. read more

We just completed celebrating my daughters wedding. Just over a hundred guests. The facility is excellent. More importantly, the staff is excellent. Every person we interacted with was polite, they were skilled at their jobs, and they worked as a team. This resort deserves a full "Ten" customer rating. They have an excellent restaurant. The horse drawn chuck wagon dinner in the woods is excellent. Their hikes vary from easy and short to long with variety and great views. Our room was comfortable. Everything in the room worked. The water was quite good. Their wedding coordinator is really good at her job. The resort has earned all five stars. read more

Gasping up the Sunnyside trail on a super responsive high quality rented mountain bike, while taking in the sky - a lovely June-July blue filled with puffy Simpson's clouds - then turning back from time to time to take in the stunning and constantly changing views, one can only think: kill me now, life will never be any better than this. But one would be wrong and would miss out on another day of awesome trail riding! And the quiet pool next to our Mt. Robinson building! And the family of tame deer that look up at us with, well, doe-eyes! And endlessly hilarious games of ping pong, foosball and pool! And the cocktails on the deck! And more doe-eyes! I'm seriously thankful to live another day to plan our next vacation to the stunning Sun Mountain Lodge. read more

I spent a few days here, and was disappointed to say the least. The best feature of this hotel is the setting (which you can get with any hotel in Winthrop). Upon arrival I had to wait to check in while two employees were talking to one another and ignoring me. I paid almost $400 a night for a room that had the initial appearance of luxury, but nowhere near 4 star quality as the hotel would have you believe. The hotel is about 10 minutes outside Winthrop, and the only activities are those that you have to overpay for (i.e. horseback riding at the hotel is nearly double what it costs in Winthrop). Dining was subpar, I waited to be seated while the staff joked about folding napkins, then I was told that I would have to wait for the waitress to come seat me because the hostess had to go somewhere. After about five minutes of waiting I left and went to Winthrop for food, which was a much better choice. Against my better judgment, I went to the bar at 9:30 and was told it was closed (even though the hours said it was open until 10:00). When I finally ate at the dining room the next morning, the food was average and very overpriced. There are no TV's in the hotel, which was explained by saying the hotel was a retreat. Unfortunately I am not one of those people that can stay away from work for days on end, and I at least needed to check my email to make sure things weren't falling apart. After using my laptop in the common area, I was told that I could not use electronics in the hotel, and that I needed to put it away or be removed from the hotel. The staff was very snobby and were quick to make sure that you understood that asking them to do something was a huge inconvenience. Everything was a chore when dealing with these people. Apparently they are taught to make you feel like you should be honored to be staying at their hotel, and if you don't like something it's your fault. I have gotten better service at a Motel 6. The friendliest person there was a groundskeeper. After overpaying for a ostentatious hotel staffed by snobs, I drove the four hours back to Seattle reassuring myself that I would never go back to Sun Mountain Lodge again. read more

Let me qualify: I would give it five stars for location (the view from the hill where the lodge sits over the valley almost looks like the opening scene in Sound of Music, awe inspiring!), and very few for the rest. The rooms are nice, but to me, (and I've stayed all over, in all sorts of accommodations from top of the line to tent camping), just not worth the prices. I mean it was a few hundred dollars per night, the furnishings and amenities just don't justify it, in my opinion. I have not stayed in the cabins, have to say they look nice, but again, for a small town in Eastern Washington, I don't think charging $300 plus a night for a cabin is warranted. Food on site was limited in variety and average in quality. There was a cafe like place and a nicer dining room. Ate in both., Unimpressed. As previously mentioned, service was not good, especially for Washington State, where service usually pretty dependable, unlike where I currently live. Take the several mile drive up the hill to see this place and the views, maybe watch the paragliders over the valley and have lunch, think twice before staying over (some cute places in town and surrounds). read more

My girlfriend and I come here after mountain biking to have a beer and some apps, but that ended the last time we came. Great views, mediocre and inconsistent service and overpriced crappy food. I ordered the organic beef burger ($13) and received a dry slab of meat that was overcooked. This was not the first time. WTF Sun Mountain Lodge? You have a killer location, but you can't seem to come up with decent pub fare? This is Food Service 101 stuff. Get a clue, please. read more

Quick Review: Beautiful Hotel, Outdated Rooms in Main Lodge, Skip Dining Room and Eat in the Lounge, Skip the Spa and Do Outdoor Adventures. Purchased a 2 night stay via Living Social and added another night. Beautiful hotel, we stayed in the main lodge. The rooms were a bit dated but the views were gorgeous. Skip the dining room, overpriced and unimpressive food. Especially the breakfast. The bar/lounge was also a tad overpriced but great service and good tasting food. Skip the spa, overpriced and by no means luxurious. We went cross country skiing and that was fun and the adventure shop was very helpful. Spent a lot of time in the main lodge near the fireplace playing games which was very relaxing. Would have given more stars if the dining room wasn't as terrible and our checkout experience wasn't bad. All of the employees were nice and helpful except for our breakfast waitress on 1/13/14 [we had a prepaid meal as a part of the package and she stopped by once to take our order and once to give us the food, we had to service everything else] and the front desk gal [extremely rude and felt like we were being pushed out]. read more

The price was high-- $300 a night for a nice room with a queen size bed on a busy summer weekend. But if you are willing to pay that much, you'll probably enjoy your experience as we did. Pros: The lodge is outside of the town of Winthrop, which is good if you want to get away from the town's congested traffic. The views are great. The rooms were comfortable, cozy, and romantic, with a log cabin kind of aesthetic. There was no TV in the room, which was a pro to me, but maybe not to everybody. The service was very helpful and friendly. We asked for a microwave in our room and got it. The views from our room, and also from the restaurant, were spectacular.The food in the restaurant was good. The food wasn't good enough to be a sole reason for visiting the premises, but it was good, and it was reasonably priced considering that it is the only place to eat within about a 10-15 minute drive. The restaurant service was excellent. Cons: The pool, hot tub, and exercise room close at 10:00 p.m. Ridiculous! This is the kind of place where many people want to spend all day out hiking or doing other outdoor activities, then go out for dinner or drinks, THEN at night use the lodge's amenities. But if you want to use the amenities here, you have to do it early. The fan in the bathroom was broken. The refrigerator froze our food and drinks. We didn't buy any of the extras like massage, horseback rides, etc, so I can't comment on those. Note that although you are in the middle of nowhere, it is a pretty big lodge, so there are a lot of people around. If what you really want is solitude, this is not the best place. Overall, we had a good experience, but I'd have to rate it at 3.5 stars considering the high price. read more

2 Stars for Food (1 star for dinner and 2 stars for breakfast) 4 Stars for the Lodge The lodge is beautifully situated and our room in the Gardiner building on the second floor had a great view. It was wonderful to wake up and watch the sun lighting the valley from bed through the large windows. It was nice that there was also a couch in the room for relaxing. The gas fireplace was well meaning but kinda superfluous - didn't give off much heat and didn't look like much. The bathroom was nice. The potentially best part was the hot tub, in which you could soak under the splendid stars. Unfortunately, for some bizarre reason, the handicapped mechanical access chair was placed on the side of the tub facing the valley blocking the view. Why wasn't this installed on the other side? Robes are included in the room. The food was awful. My meal - the cobb salad - in the pub was a bad version of what you'd get in the TGI Fridays at the Pittsburgh airport. I swear it was assembled weeks ago, and it was served ice cold and appeared to have been made by a machine, with bad shredded cheese, dried out chicken, etc. Breakfast the next morning was somewhat better, obviously helped by the view. The scrambled eggs were tasty but the potatoes terribly boring and slightly undercooked. Surprisingly, the coffee was decent. The service in both places was quite rushed. Particularly in the pub, when it was clear they wanted us out by 9! Do not be fooled by all their blabber about "farm to table", "freshest local ingredients", "food forward", etc. It's all nonsense. read more

So this lodge is situated on top of a small mountain overlooking the Methow Valley. From Seattle it was about a 5 hour drive through the North Cascades Highway. The Sun Mountain Lodge offers some spectacular views of the valley. From the lodge or any of the rooms you can see down the valley and the mountains in the background. You'll also overlook downtown Winthrop. Since I was there in fall you can see the leaves changing colors. The main lodge is really nice with a definite wilderness feeling to it. It feel like very large wood cabin and comes with mounted or stuff wildlife hanging on the walls. I think the staff at the Sun Mountain Lodge were fantastic. I went there for my birthday thanks to my wonderful girlfriend. One of the staff wrote me a card wishing me a happy birthday. I thought that was a wonderful little touch that just made the place even better. If you're coming here to just veg in the room, don't bother. This lodge really does cater to people who like to get out and explore the terrain, by hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, etc. Since it was a little damp my girlfriend tried one of the shorter hiking trails. The trail had signs explaining the geology and biology of the many of the things that we were seeing. It was pretty informative. I want to come back out here for winter for some snow shoeing and summer for some mountain biking. The lodge is the center point for all of the activity. There is also a couple of pools and hottubs for the guests. Now our room was above average. It came with a king size bed, fireplace, and small sink/minibar. It was missing a TV, but that's on purpose. I found the bed a little uncomfortable, probably because it was a little worn. It acutally caused my back to ache a little. The bathrrom came with a shower and jetted bathtub (Note don't empty a small bottle of shampoo in the tub and then turn on the jets. Way too much foam. Oops). Everything in our room was tidy and clean. Hard to ask for anything more. I really like this place and I want to come back. It was a little expensive, but I think it's worth it. It's definitely the best place to stay if you're heading to Winthrop. read more

It was about 300 a night--pretty stiff. The room was gorgeous-amazing views over the Valley. Great wi-fi, whatever rules they used to have about electronics are done now. The ensuite Jacuzzi tub was nice, though in order to poop in privacy, it's a hassle, involving closing the big doors over the tub, and still, your partner can hear you, not very sexy. Add a pocket door to close in the toilet, please. Loved the fireplace, though it looked a bit ratty. Firestains on the back wall of the fireplace, and the doors are glued shut so you can't get any extra heat out if it. We really wanted to get an evening soak in the hot tub, so we walked over to the outdoor one by the Robinson Building just before 10pm. There was still a bit of light in the sky. As we walked over, a big truck pulled up by the gate to the hot tub and a guy walked out for a sec. When we got to the gate, it was padlocked. The truck sat there long enough that it was clear we would not soak there unless we waited a half hour or more and then jumped the fence. For 300 a night, I think we could have been allowed to soak for a bit in quiet. Reading the book in the room, everything costs money, You'd think the tennis rackets would be free, just buy balls...but yes, it costs money to rent the rackets. They have their own lake, but you can't just fly fish it, you have to HIRE a GUIDE to fish the lake at all. Couples massage was very reasonably priced (?200?) and very good massage from two women who both knew the Valley very well. We could have chatted with Bev and Margaret all evening. Margaret used to be a Forest Ranger in the area. Very cool. We only ate breakfast there, but the food was excellent. Really good coffee, and homemade Hollandaise sauce. Wow, I am really shocked to see the so-so reviews of this place. My boyfriend had been before and we went together this past weekend for a four-day stay. I can honestly say it has been one of my favorite vacations I have taken with him. The drive and the destination are equally breathtaking. We stopped at Diablo Lake along the way, where he was so moved by the beautiful blue-green water that he stripped down to his boxers and went for a (cold!) swim. When we arrived at the lodge, we were greeted promptly and given our keys, breakfast tickets, etc. Our room was amazing, with a view of the mountains. No, there isn't a TV, but we didn't really need one - in fact, we didn't notice there wasn't one until late into the second day. There was a huge, deep tub and fireplace, and a big comfy bed with lots of pillows. Yes, there are only two dining options at the lodge - the bar and grill or the fine dining restaurant. (The bar and grill also does in-room dining.) But seriously - if you're looking for a wide range of food options, why are you vacationing in Winthrop? Go to San Francisco for the weekend. We did go down to Winthrop proper one evening - a town done in an early 1900s old west style - and had pizza. There are multiple other options there as well. Besides the pool directly next to our lodging, there is also easy access to Patterson Lake. We had an amazing time swimming there, as the water was fairly warm (probably low 70s) from the heat the area has been getting. We also went horseback riding and hiking and saw snakes, grouse, deer, and chipmunks. We got great massages at the spa, and enjoyed varied delicious foods and wines from both restaurants. Every employee we encountered was friendly and helpful, and we did not find anything to be overpriced - we bought TYR goggles from the activities shop, for instance, for $11 each - you know at other resorts they'd be charging you $25. Very strange that the person below says the staff asked him/her not to use electronics - we saw numerous people on cells and laptops, and the rooms are all wireless-ready, so I am not sure what was going on there. We had no problem accessing the internet, and frankly, I found the no TV thing to be kind of nice. Overall, Sun Mountain Lodge provided us with a wonderful, relaxing yet invigorating weekend. This place is not as luxurious as advertised. For close to $300 @ night, we got a room with an outdated bathroom that took us back into the 70s. Our room was close to the elevator, and I'm a light sleeper so I am worried I am going to have a sleepness night. On top of that, the receptionist wasn't welcoming at all. I noted that she was the assistant manager too! Yikes, the staff might even be worst. We had problems with the tub draining. I didn't want to be inconvenienced bc we were celebrating our anniversary so I told them to deal with it when we check out the next day. The shower the next morning had water up past my ankle. Gross. No apologies whatsoever from the lodge! ! The only positive is that the snowshoe trails are right outside hotel... but I recommend that you take your money elsewhere bc it's definitely not worth it here and just drive to the trails. read more

First off, this is a review of the Hotel, Activities and staff. The restaurant would not get 4 stars. I would give it 3 stars (both the "fine dining" and the "bar&grill". The staff were warm and welcoming and make check in easy and quick despite it being a late Friday afternoon. Once we were in our room, they called to make sure everything was OK. Nice touch. Wanting to book a horse ride was easy and within a few minutes the Activities folks had us booked in for the following morning. Plenty of activities to enjoy, but we only had time for the horses and the interpretive hike (1 mile intro to the area). The restaurant looses points for average food at very above average prices. Deserts seem to be their forte'. The bar is probably the best value for the $$. Regardless which you choose to dine in, the views are stunning. Best to pickup a nice bottle of wine and some cheese/fruit and sit on your balcony and enjoy the sunsets.... read more

Amazing! Beautiful! Peaceful! We were blown away by our recent stay here. We stayed in the cabins on Patterson Lake and I had to pinch myself...we loved it so much. The guy who rents the boats/kayaks was really friendly and even came out twice to check on us and offer to take our picture. We took the covered wagon ride to the cowboy dinner and it was definitely a highlight. The views were flat out amazing and our kids LOVED the horses and singing around the campfire. The food was wonderful. It was an amazing weekend and we're already planning a return trip in the winter. read more

This place is amazing! I went there for the first time yesterday for a birthday dinner. We got a table by the window with a spectacular view of the valley below, and could have just sat there admiring the view all night as the sun set and the stars came out. The service was excellent and prompt. We ordered the pate plate appetizer which came with a chicken liver pate, pickled eggs (didn't try those), a locally made goat cheese and dried slices of beef. Everything was good, but I did feel the pate could have (should have) been better. Our waitress even asked for an honest opinion about the pate and agreed it could have used something more. It was ok, but not great, and I expected great. And the question by the waitress seems to indicate that they knew it wasn't great, but it was being served any way, which I am not all that thrilled about and the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. My main course was the lamb which does deserve a 5 star rating. It was delish! Melt in your mouth, cut with the butter knife tender and excellently seasoned with mustard seeds, bread crumbs and other herbs, and served with mashed potatoes and veges. I almost wished I had forgone the appetizer and ordered 3 chops instead of just the 2 - they are small, after all, but the portion was just enough to be very satisfying after having had bread, crackers, cheese, salad, then the main course. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their meals and we left after spending several hours over our leisurely dinner, quite full and pleased overall with our visit. It is 1:30AM as I write this review. "Why would someone write a review at such an hour?" You might ask. In answer to that question it's because I'm wide awake and none too happy. My mom, daughter and I wanted to have a nice girls weekend, drive the north cascades highway, stay in Winthrop, visit Leavenworth. Just an all around relaxing weekend. I had heard great things about Sun Mountain Lodge. How nice it is, how beautiful it is, and how the whole experience is fantastic. It is very nice and the views are breathtaking. We were having a very nice time until shortly after midnight... I had just dozed off when I heard a rustling sound. I lay in bed thinking it was my imagination. Nope, I heard it again. I woke my mom up to see if she could hear it too. Yep, she did. So we both sat there just watching the bag of chocolates we bought while in town. (There's a lesson in that, don't save the chocolate to savor later, eat it when you buy it!) Soon a little head popped out of the top. I gasped, yes, I know it's just a mouse, but I gasped none the less. This wakes up my daughter, my teenage daughter. We are now all sitting on the bed wide awake, wondering what to do. "Do we put the bag (and mouse) in the ice bucket? It's the only thing that we have to contain it. Then we can put it outside." Nope, we're not fast enough to do that. So we do the next best thing...call the front desk. After a brief conversation we're told the gal will call us back. After 30 minutes we haven't heard a thing, except the mouse enjoying our candy. We call the front desk again, no answer. We let the phone ring quite a few times. An hour after the initial call we call again. Success, she answered!! Only to say that she called our room twice and left a message. The phone is next to the bed, within arms reach. We don't have any hearing loss or issues hearing. Not one of us heard it ring either time. The message light isn't blinking on the phone either. Rather strange...The gal at the desk (I am intentionally excluding her name) said she has another room for us. I'm not too thrilled that we missed the two phone calls and am ready to sleep in my car. We gather some of our belongings, they will get the rest for us and head we to the lodge. She apologized about "all this" I then asked when the manager will be in. After that she didn't seem all that sorry. This little mouse has ruined my stay. Not on purpose, how could he know that the gal at the desk either a) called the wrong room, not once but twice or b) didn't really call in the first place. I had planned on making this an annual trip, but will probably stay elsewhere in the future. read more

I get it. They're short staffed. The lodge seems pretty full but restaurants are not able to be fully open yet. We made some reservations in advance for a couple of dinners, but tonight I walked over and asked about availability of take out. I was met with a short response about limited capacity for takeout, and conflicting information about menu availability. Again, I get it but it's clear that take out is a HUGE inconvenience to them. I just was trying to understand. The overworked person behind the bar who had to take all orders was short when I asked about when to come back to pick up my order. Gift shop and housekeeping staff have been so nice, as was our awesome waiter last night and one of the women working the check out desk. They need to understand that we are patient and get covid related difficulties- but we are paying a lot to be here and a positive attitude back would be welcome. read more

Cowboy breakfast was awesome! Fun to do with my family and had a great experience riding for the first time. I wasn't sure what to expect but the ladies at the stables made us feel comfortable and they had a lot of knowledge of the area. The guys waiting at the homestead we rode up to (about 45 minutes) were awesome Pike and Dakota and I can't remember the cowboy that taught us how to lasso calves, but he was great. and the breakfast was delicious! So I am happy to follow up on my prior review that I left for Sun Mountain Lodge last fall, as we have returned for another stay. Brian, the GM for the Lodge reached out to us to discuss and address our concerns, and to try and make it right by showing us that our first experience was an anomaly. From the moment we walked in to the lobby to check in with the front desk staff, we were already impressed with the friendly front desk staff. Whether they knew we were coming for a return visit or not, it did not matter as they treated other guests with the same friendliness. We went to our room in the Mt. Robinson suite, and we were extremely impressed with the high end feel and accomodations. The bed was very comfortable, and the views were amazing from our room as well. So our first night was off to a great start, and we headed down to the restaurant for our dinner reservation. Once again, all of the staff were very outgoing and friendly, as well as 100% professional. Our meals for both Friday and Saturday night we amazing, and our waiters (Stoney on Friday, Kevin on Saturday) were both awesome and knowledgeable, and their assistant Anthony was top notch and fun to joke around with. We met with the new Executive Chef Tyler, whom we had experienced at his prior employer (Cave B), and had a nice little chat and expressed our appreciation for his menu and skills. I must say that our weekend was fabulous on all fronts, and I would like to thank Brian and Deb for making our stay memorable, and it truly lived up to our expectations this time. The lodge is clean. The employees are friendly. The rooms are Super comfortable. The trails around the area are maintained and good for jogging, biking, or just a stroll. A one night accomodation was not available on-line. Upon arriving in Winthrop we stopped @ Sun Mountain Lodge and asked if we could stay for 1 night only. The front desk clerk, who was also The Manager, cheerfully greeted us and made suggestions for a room. She even upgraded our initial choice. Our room had a bathtub jacuzzi that overlooked the mountains. Deer grazed on grass near us. The property is Beautiful. This review is mostly for their dining room. We came for breakfast, and we had to wait incredibly long for everything. Not only was the food slow, but it was so average and I just felt so upset that I wasn't getting what I paid for. My food was burnt and they were missing things that were explicitly written on the menu. The only good selling point they have is their view and their facilities. However they do not have a television in the guest rooms, and I find that sort of strange. read more

We snagged a last minute room on a Saturday night after an afternoon of foraging elderberries turned into a longer adventure than expected. Not wanting to drive back over to the west side late at night, we decided to stay in Winthrop and enjoy dinner and a little mini vacay. There wasn't a single room available in town (it was 7pm or so when we began looking) which is how we ended up at the resort. Anyway, all that to say that this review is really only for the room itself and the restaurant. We didn't have time to do enjoy any of the local activities. No doubt the setting is striking, and it looked like we would have had a blast if we had had our bikes with us. The resort itself though is quite dated, and the food at the restaurant mediocre. They had a CD player in the room.... which my kids thought was hilarious :-) I appreciated the lack of a tv though, and the robes are always a nice touch. The temperature in the room was perfect and the beds were nice and comfy. It met all of our needs, so we were happy enough. The odd thing was, they originally gave us our keys to a room that had not yet been cleaned. However, we didn't find this out until 10pm as we headed straight to the restaurant upon arrival. It was super gross to walk into a room with dirty beds, towels and dishes strewn about. Kind of a buzz kill to the end of our night. They did switch our keys out to another room... but didn't really apologize or seem bothered by the mistake. As for the restaurant, the staff was courteous and friendly. 3 members of our family of 5 are vegan, and they accommodated our needs beautifully, even bringing us vegan versions of the amuse bouche. The actual service though was pretty amateur, rather slow, and they got a few parts of our order wrong. They were out of the Scotch my husband ordered, then out of the wine we ordered, got the kids' drink order wrong twice, and brought the wrong side order for my son. I felt like I was having to ask for everything multiple times, which was kinda annoying. It was all lighthearted though.... and the staff really was friendly and sweet. They just seemed undertrained perhaps. Overall, we had a fun night.... but this was not up to par with a high end restaurant experience. My daughter was married here in June 2018 and it was lovely. The cabins were great and the scenery was unsurpassed. Unfortunately, the food at the wedding was mediocre. The salmon was overcooked and unappetizing. Incredibly expensive for what was served. I'm still embarrassed. The room for the reception was a conference room. Great for meetings, but terrible for a wedding. Maybe doing a buffet would have been better. Also some of our guests complained of lack of tv's in room. read more

Confidential memo to Starfleet Command: As per Starfleet protocol, I have kept my crew members in the dark as to the true purpose of our mission. They continue to believe that we are here strictly to evaluate Earth's readiness for Federation membership, and are unaware that I have also been tasked with the job of finding a suitable base for Starfleet personnel who are assigned to Earth. I am taking the risk of breaking communications silence on this matter because I believe we have found a suitable location: Sun Mountain Lodge. Its qualifications: * Lodge is situated to provide panoramic views for miles and miles -- but without much in the way of immediate neighbors. From a tactical perspective, this means we could detect a Romulan invasion long before it posed any threat. From an aesthetic perspective, it is what the humans term "pleasant". * Rooms are tastefully furnished in an Earth-toned palette that while notionally Western(ish) will not trigger any sensory reactions from officers who belong to color-averse species. * Staff is friendly and helpful, but not intrusive. Front desk responded to all requests in a timely manner and showed excellent taste in complimenting us on our Starfleet uniforms. * Separate cabins (a mile from lodge) offer accommodation options for officers who elect to bring their families on the mission. * Abundance of local deer provides credible cover story for humans who believe they have sighted aliens. [That's a shout-out to the documentarians behind "People of Earth".] * On a related note, the lodge's wide selection of decapitated animal heads provides an obvious surveillance system. True, these wall-mounted animal heads were somewhat disturbing to members of our crew who come from civilizations that gave up hunting for sport centuries ago. But you have to admit that those head cavities and eyeballs would be a handy place to hide surveillance cameras. * Swimming pool, hot tub and a very well-provisioned games room (featuring ping pong, foosball and pool tables) will offer an acceptable substitute for the holodeck when crew members are in need of recreation. * Should we need human recruits, Keri in the activities shop showed extraordinary consideration to our entire crew, and to the complexities of inter-species missions. Some concerns we may wish to address: * On-site dining choices are not as successful as the rest of the accommodation. While we did not take dinner in Sun Mountain's formal, acclaimed and expensive Dining Room (I *told* Command that our per diem budget needs to be raised!), our other two meals on site were less than stellar. Breakfast in the dining room was fine but unremarkable; dinner at the grill was good but again, nothing astounding, and with relatively limited options (mostly bread-based). Consider requisitioning replicators in order to offer additional food options to crew members, or alternately, asking hotel staff for a fridge and/or microwave. * Until such a time as Starfleet is able to take full possession of this facility, crew members may be slightly conspicuous among the regular guests of the hotel. Unlike some lodgings we visited, guests at this facility have a remarkably uniform appearance that crew members may struggle to emulate. For a reference point, we recommend perusing the J. Crew or L.L. Bean catalogs. * Forest fires periodically compromise both the visibility and the tangible air quality at this location; on our last day, it smelled strongly of smoke. We are confident that once Starfleet completes Protocol Zeta (climate change sub-clause) this issue can be resolved. I understand that a decision this major -- where to locate our Earth observation base -- cannot be taken lightly. I would therefore like to volunteer my crew for repeated observation missions, and particularly encourage Starfleet to assign us to a winter visit (so we may assess the tactical evasion potential of cross-country skiing), and visits in both spring and fall (to assess the relative camouflage benefits of wildflowers and autumnal leaves). With repeated study, and a budget that allows us to visit the Dining Room, I am confident that we can provide Starfleet with a detailed and illuminating report. read more

I am a huge fan of Sun Mountain Lodge because the service is amazing, the rooms are ideal, the cabins serene and there is so much to do: biking, hiking, boating and paddle boarding on the lake, fishing, and more, more, more. It is a gorgeous location and I enjoy being far enough away from town so that the place is not overrun with "those" tourists. I have returned year after year for a conference that is held here in June. One of these years I will enjoy it in the winter! read more

The resort is located on the very top of the area overlooking the valley. Absolutely gorgeous view that can't be beat. The resort is decorated well and is quite impressive. The rooms are quiet and large, but fairly sparse in amenities. The rooms are showing some dating but overall I was happy with the room especially the views. The resort shines for its location. Incredible access to many snow activities just out a few steps. They have a snow shop to rent gear. Unfortunately the trail maps were horrible. Just a tip, there is no Grizzly Hill on the map. That was confusing when you're expecting Moose Trail. Several people were confused by that and I think it would help if the staff at the snow shop would have indicated it. I agree with the other reviewers about the food. Definitely nothing to write home about. Edible but not worth it. Breakfast was bland. The bar food was ok if you don't want to go into town. But I agree this place needs to work on their dining experience to truly give a resort feel. read more

Fun and beautiful, yes. Front desk is awesome. Problem is the outdated room amenities in the lodge including no refrigerator in most rooms, no microwave, no bottled water, lacking smartphone audio hookups and charging outlets, etc. Rustic could describe it well. That's okay when you need a getaway. The service at dining was preoccupied with something or elsewhere, very delayed and certainly can be improved. Hard to give the place 4 stars without some updates and improvements with guest services. read more

The kids had a blast horseback riding and swimming. The people who manage the horseback riding activity are fantastic. They were very sweet and tons of fun! Love their team! I like the people from the gift shop and the activity registration center as well. They were very warm. We didn't try their food since it didn't seem like people loved them from the reviews, but there are 2 things they absolutely got right...soy cappuccino at the gift shop and the hazelnut chocolate torte from the bar! They were heavenly delicious! It was a worthy vacation spot for people with kids. Great hiking trails, deers roaming all day as if they are hosting the visits, perfect swimming pool with a wonderful view and no TV (I thought) is the best feature of the lodge. read more

It's been nearly five months since my husband and I had dinner with a friend at the Sun Mountain bar restaurant. My friend, Lucy, was seriously injured that evening and, whether it was her fault or the fault of the lodge, doesn't matter. The lack of concern and indifference by Sun Mountain staff was absolutely astonishing. We were seated on the elevated area in the bar at a six person table. There were four of us. The table was (and still is) located close to the two steps, with Lucy's chair less than a foot from them. When she got up to leave she pushed the chair back slightly, took a step sideways and she and the chair fell to the floor below. Her injuries required medical attention and to this day she continues to be in pain and attends physical therapy regularly. It is questionable whether her shoulder and arm will ever fully recover. Yes, a staff member arrived on the scene but offered no help. She simply asked if Lucy would like to complete an accident report and told her to send any medical bills to the lodge. What an accident report does I have no clue. Lucy has heard nothing with regard to that report. In a followup call to the restaurant Lucy was told that Sun Mountain does not get involved with medical bills. Lucy has good insurance but that's not the point. It was the attitude and lack of caring. She never did talk with the manager. He referred to his minions because "he doesn't like to take these kinds of calls" according to the person she talked with. Lucy had, and still has, no interest in suing Sun Mountain, but she could have! What she wanted and asked for was that the area be made safer for future customers. She suggested that a four person table replace the six, or that a short attractive railing be installed as a safety measure. For both suggestions she received an "absolutely cannot do either of those things." I was there when this accident happened. Either of those solutions is entirely possible. For the life of me, I cannot imagine how a business of Sun Mountain's caliber could be so mundane and dispassionate about such a serious incident. If it were any other restaurant or business, anywhere, I'm betting they would be all over her to make things right. Oddly, if you don't like your dinner or maybe the service at Sun Mountain, you will get a response to your review with all kinds of offers. In one case, a free dinner and free night was offered to someone who complained about the food! Lucy has not received so much as a phone call to see how she is doing. What is wrong with these people? We have moved from Winthrop, but while living there we frequented the Sun Mountain restaurant and bar several times. Will we go back? Never. This incident screams not only of poor customer service but a huge lack of humanity. In my view, vindictiveness seems appropriate. read more

Every fall we make our yearly visit to Methow Valley. It's our "Autumn-break" before the Holiday's. The Sun Mountain Lodge is where we detox, rejuvenate and take a break from the rat-race. Every room is perfect, even the one's in the lodge with a limited view. The rooms are peaceful, quiet with comfortable beds and terrific views. We've stayed in every guest room over the years and prefer the Gardner rooms and with the extend-a-stay package the room rates are a deal. The Mt. Robinson rooms have a sunken tub and that extra perk doesn't justify the price. The outdoor activities are what really makes it special. We sign up for numerous activities from horseback riding, to fly fishing, to sailing on the lake. Brett and Kevin at the activities desk take care of you, with info on where to hike, fish, ride your bike, and where to eat in Winthrop or Twisp. They don't treat you like a "newbie" when you try something new, they sincerely want to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. I can't say enough good things about them. As the restaurants go, don't plan on eating at the lodge every night or breakfast every day. Over multiple days the menu gets old and tired. Maybe that's the point, one should get out and enjoy what the Methow Valley has to offer then come back to the lodge and have a glass of wine. Sun Mountain Lodge is the only place to stay! read more

Here for a conference. There are no TVs, refrigerators or microwaves in the rooms. WiFi and cell service is poor, at best, which is fine if you are here to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. If you're stuck in a conference all day, you might want to contact the outside world. With the place being 14 miles from the nearest town and with people having different food requirements, they might do well to add refrigerators. I get that they want people to eat at their $14 hummus plate restaurant and have a $12 dessert, not my style. And the place doesn't wake up until 9 am. Good luck getting a cup of coffee or hot water. They'd serve their customers well having a pot in the lobby like most hotels, especially if the restaurant doesn't open until 8:30. I would not stay here again on a pleasure trip. The rooms are clean, which is nice. The views are amazing, hiking and wildlife are plentiful. All the dead animals on the walls may not sit well with animal lovers. PETA might not like to hold their conference here. read more

Great location, great views, great resort! Staff were friendly and courteous. Good to very good wine list. We had dinner and breakfast in the main dining room. Brekfast was about a 7 ( out of 10). Dinner was an 8 plus ( I had the duck, skin was crisp, meat was med rare). We also had a 2ild mushroom st4udke that was a solid 10. Our room was in the main lodge. It was very nice. So add to the "greats" above It would make a great place to recommend with confidence. read more

We stayed at Sun Mountain several times before this recent time which was four nights and for a four star resort it was less than perfect. We felt that there was no personality with the resort. The staff was nice checking in but nothing special, not accomadating. What about a glass of wine to welcome the guest? We spent over $800 for 4 nights and have been left by ourselves with no amenities. There was one option for breakfast which as a celiac was not helpful. We ended up driving into town every day for breakfast and dinner. They are not customer focused which is something I would expect for a four star resort, with or without the pandemic. My recommendation is to look outside the box! Think about the needs of all guests. (Just Disappointed) read more
