I'm not sure how this place has a 4.5-star average. Maybe they had to cut some corners during COVID, because the fish quality was just not good. Most (80%) of the pieces of yellowfin in the poke bowl had a layer of connective tissue that was impossible to chew through. The silver skin in some of the fish squares was visible through the clear lid when I picked my bowl up, but I wasn't expecting to have to spit out pieces of fascia as many times as I did. They also failed to include some of the toppings I'd marked, including shelled edamame and pineapple. If this was because they ran out of ingredients, they didn't inform me, either at time of ordering or once the order was complete. The portions weren't the best. I ordered half rice and half salad for the base, but it seemed like most of the bowl was rice. You get much more bang for your buck at Hashtag Poki or Poke Bar. Comments specific to walk-up take-out orders during COVID-19 shelter-in-place: About a 10-15min wait after placing the order in person. Not bad, not great. This place is tucked away on a smaller street in Downtown Berkeley and is super accessible by BART and AC Transit. There is also street parking can be hard to find. The way it works: Walk in and the cashier will give you a menu. (They may have one on the wall again now. But when I went they had just renovated). Anyways, you dig threw the menu, order what you want (they do to-go) and then you are good to go. My sushi burrito to go took didn't take too long. The food: This place has multiple items, but I come here for the sushi burritos. I get the one with spicy ahi tuna and the taste is pretty good. Not really spicy, but still decent flavor. The portions are also pretty big and I am always satisfied when I eat here. They also have poke but I have not tried it here. That being said, my friend who did order it said it was pretty good. So I've never had poké before and since I've been in California, I've been curious to try it. It was spectacular! I'm officially a fan! And I'm glad I tried it here because this restaurant also offers foods I'm familiar with like the takoyaki (which was incredible) and sushi (which is a must). I arrived right in the middle of happy hour, the place wasn't too busy, I was greeted immediately and allowed to sit anywhere that was available. My food was received relatively quickly, and I ate every bit of it! Next time, I'll try a poké bowl that is on the menu instead of creating my own....just to try. So glad I stopped in to give this dish a shot, and grateful that this place makes it so well read more

I came here for lunch around 11:30am on a Friday and it was surprisingly completely empty and I was the only customer in there. I was expecting it to be an order at the register type of place, but I actually got seated and was given a menu to look at. I think if you eat there, there's waiter service and if you take it to go, you just order at the register and wait for your food. The menu has a wide variety of choices from traditional Japanese appetizers to sushi rolls and poké bowls. I decided on a poké bowl, and to order them, you get a marker up front from the register and mark it on the menu, which is a much more convenient way to order them. I got the tuna & salmon poké bowl with half brown rice and half salad. On the menu, I put down that I wanted double the protein, but when I received it, it was such a small amount of fish and didn't seem like double the protein, but the cubes of fish were pretty large. My server then came to me and apologized that the chef didn't see the double protein marked on my order and asked if I still wanted it, but I said it was fine and took that as a sign that I should probably save those few extra dollars (lol). It was still nice of them though to still offer and fix their mistake. Regarding the poké bowl itself, overall it was pretty good! The presentation was quite appealing and everything was fresh tasting. My one complaint would probably be the ratio of rice to everything else in the bowl. I ordered half rice half salad, but it seemed like there was a lot more rice than salad and given the amount of fish provided, the rice is just way too much. In the end, I'd probably just stick to those restaurants that specialize in poké bowls if I wanted one and wouldn't get it here, but I'd definitely come back here to try some of their other foods! read more

Really enjoyed my dinner here. The takoyakis were really nice, and the ramen is much better that I expected. The pork in the ramen is a little bit sweet, so if you like sweet pork in ramen definitely give it a try. They give free miso soup after 3:00 pm and it tastes a little bit bland; I guess they wanted to make it acceptable for most people so it didn't have such a strong taste. They don't have sushi anymore. I got a poke bowl. Other Pike places offer multiple proteins, more fish, and brown rice. Here you get one protein. I choose ahi tuna. The pieces were too large, and the amount small. I didn't get wasabi. I got the vinegrette because it is the only one that is gluten free. They used a packet of gluten free soy sauce to make it and gave me a second one. I was also told that the crab is safe without the sauce but then after asking, I was told it is imitation crab. For those of you that eat here often, please note that Sumo Roll is officially under new management. I tried to drop by a week ago and noticed a sign that said they were closed due to some mix up with a permit. Not sure what really happened, but the restaurant idea and menu was sold to someone else. The inside of the restaurant is the same, bar seating around the main room with a few smaller tables in the back towards the restroom. I wish the new owner had taken the time to rearrange and redecorate, but it's still nice and clean. I ordered: Kazan (Spicy) and the Summer Roll (new) Kazan: I'm not a huge fan of Salmon so I asked to swap the Salmon for Spicy Tuna. The old owner offered a burrito with Spicy Tuna filling but that isn't the case anymore. I also asked to swap the kimchi for fresh carrots. Anyone whose been here before will immediately notice that the burritos are slimmer. Just weeks ago these wraps were bursting at the seams, but now they are neatly rolled. I think the majority of the size difference comes from the fact that the new owner isn't stuffing as much lettuce/greens into the wraps. The nice thing about this is that you get to savor the flavor of the sauce and fish without feeling like you're eating a salad. They could have been a tad more generous with the Tuna portion, but you will still walk away fairly satisfied. I wouldn't say this wrap is very spicy, no real kick, just a light spice that keeps it interesting. The greens and vegetables are bright and fresh and the avocado was perfectly ripe. The fresh carrot had a nice crisp crunch. Summer Roll: They make this roll with soy paper and the taste of the soy changed the flavor in a way that I couldn't appreciate. If I ordered this again I'd swap out the pretty pink soy paper. This roll was of a good size and they were generous with the crab meat filling. Unlike some places, the owner doesn't fall back on using rice as filler, he really packs in the ingredients. Again, the ingredients were extremely fresh. I was really disappointed because there was a tiny amount of mango in this roll and I ordered it specifically because of the mango. The mango they used was fresh and sweet and delightful - they just need to add a little more of it. The woman working the register was extremely kind and checked-in often. I could tell she really cares about customer satisfaction. I had a chance to chat with the new owner, who prepares all the fish and rolls, and he was AMAZING. He has a bright smile for his customers and is happy to chat about his process if it isn't busy when you visit. He obviously cares about the freshness of his products and prepares his fish by hand. They are still figuring out what flavors work best and what else they may want to offer in the future. They were super accommodating and willing to swap out or add ingredients without making you feel like a burden. They welcome your honest feedback and advice. Come try out the new team!! Ps: I asked about the loyalty program and the old owner is going to provide the new owner with a list of who was participating in the program and how many visits they had. A great sushirrito place in Downtown Berkeley. I went here randomly one evening to try my first sushirrito and it was awesome! I ordered the Agemono and it was pretty huge and definitely filling, and was worth its price. Luckily, I skipped lunch that day so I had a huge appetite and was able to finish it. If I had eaten lunch earlier, I don't think I would have been able to finish the sushirrito, so that's how huge it was. The cashier lady is also really friendly and nice, greeting me right away when I entered and giving me plenty of time to choose my order. The place looks really small from the outside, but it's actually a little bigger since there are more tables in the back (where there is also a bathroom). Space-wise, it's probably a small-medium sized restaurant. They also didn't have loud music playing, so it's definitely a good spot to chat and catch-up with a friend. One summer, Sumo Roll had a huge 50% happy hour deal and I tried several rolls they had here. Let's get this straight first: Sumo Roll isn't going to be the fine sushi and luxury taste that you would pay at a higher-end restaurant. Instead, Sumo Roll is a place that provides both quantity and quality for the cheaper price you will be paying. I really enjoyed the Alaska Roll, Rainbow Roll, Lion King, Caterpillar Roll, and Mexico City Roll. Although I can truthfully admit that the fish isn't the freshest it can be, it still tastes very good and you can always have a side of your wasabi and ginger and soy sauce if you want an additional taste. It's a small place with quite a few small tables and stools, so I would probably order takeout if you are coming with a large group.
