For the Osaka tuna, the jalapeño was really strong so I would recommend asking them to take it out if you can't handle the jalapeño! I have been coming here for about a year now and it's become one of my favorite places to dine at. You might find this place on the Internet, read the description, and come in meaning to order sushi burritos and poke bowls, but what keeps me coming back are the other items on their menu. Just imagine yourself in a restaurant far more upscale and decorated by Michelin stars, and order from one of their entrees. I think you will find the food just as sumptuous. Throw in an appetizer and you'll have yourself a veritable feast. With the food presented on hefty, attractive plates and bowls, the simplistic but stylish Japanese-themed decor, and staff who are both friendly and attentive, the experience comes pretty close. I started out eating their sushi burritos before moving to their poke bowls. I don't remember when, but it was probably at the recommendation of the lady waiting on me that I tried one of their entrees; I think it was the kakunidon. The portions were just right for me, leaning towards filling, and the pork belly tasted excellent. Other recommendations I have are: - takoyaki - unadon - kakuni ramen (when they have it) - kazan burrito I liked all the sushi rolls I've ordered so far, but I'm not particular when it comes to these things and I haven't fully explored all their sushi options yet. I'd like to take one more moment to focus on the decor. When I first came here, I think I was sitting at one of those small, round tables toward the back of the restaurant. The table and chairs felt cheap, but it got the job done. Over the past year I've seen them replace those with nicer wood tables, and now they have a bench there with those tables! Also, they spent the holidays repainting the interior. I like the new aesthetic; I think it looks more modern and fresh than the old one. Again, I highly recommend the food here. Came here with a friend from out of town, because we wanted a sushi experience without the sit-down restaurant experience. We went right when it opened on a Friday, and we weren't expecting a wait, especially since aside from me and my friend, there was one other person in the store. However, there was only one woman working and she was rushing back and forth trying to take our orders, making the sushi burritos, and ringing us up. It looked exhausting. Finally, a second employee joined her and then things seemed to run a bit smoother. I ordered the Kamikaze and my friend ordered the Hawaiian. Mine was delicious and exactly what I needed on such a hot day. My friend loved hers too and said that she was thinking about buying another one to take with her! Today's experience at Sumo Roll has caused me to do a complete 180 on this place. We were just strolling by this afternoon when we saw "Tasting Event" signs on its windows and decided to see what it entailed. We found out that they were hosting a free event for Five Stars members - which I am - where they were offering plentiful samples of all of their rolls. Turns out I just didn't order the right ones for me the first time around! I was able to try every single roll and enjoyed most of them. My favorite was the Baja California and I really liked the Shinsen. The owners hosted the event and were lovely. To cap things off, I couldn't believe it when they offered my boyfriend and I all their leftover sushi since we were the last ones at the event. We were blown away and now have dinner and lunch free of charge. We will definitely be back. read more

The waitress was so kind and accommodating, especially for such a large crowd. I ordered the unadon, which really hit the spot. The fish was tender and the rice portion was very filling. As part of my New Year Resolution, I would like to embark on new food adventures that I haven't had the pleasure to do so in 2016, which is why I decided to try out the sushi burrito at Sumo Roll. This is my first time ever having a sushi burrito, so I didn't know exactly what to expect at first, but I knew that I must try this unique cross between the traditional sushi and the burrito. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the "Kamikaze" because it contained spicy tuna and wasabi aioli, which sparked my curiosity. As I bit into it, it had a subtle spice to it and then after letting it linger in my mouth for awhile, it BURST with even more flavor as the taste of the wasabi aioli came into play with the spicy tuna. It was not overly spicy, but just enough for you to know that it is spicy. The Kamikaze contained a lot of vegetables and pickled daikon, so it cooled down the heat of the spicy tuna and wasabi after you had the chance to taste their full effects. Overall, I would describe the Kamikaze as a well orchestrated symphony because there is so many ingredients in it that worked so well with each other in order to produced a memorable and enjoyable food experience. I also had the opportunity to try the "Hawaiian" and overall I did not enjoy it as much as the the "Kamikaze" because I could not taste what is inside the wrap, but instead my palate was more focused on the nori and tasted that more than anything else. read more

This place is right next to Saturn's Cafe. Really small shop but it makes up for it with the great customer service and food offered! Walked in and it was not busy in the afternoon. Got the takoyaki and clams with udon. Takoyaki was one of the best I've had. The udon with clams was delicious too and portion size was generous. I was super excited to try this place upon arriving in Berkeley, and I wasn't disappointed! I got the Hawaiian Burrito and I was pretty satisfied with it. Everything tasted really nice and fresh. I picked out the carrots, because I forgot to ask for it without them and I'm not a fan. I wish they would have had a little bit more fish in there, but it was still really good! The inside is also pretty clean. They have small cups you can fill with water for free, which is especially nice since all the bottled beverages are around $2.95. Having a sushirrito place literally a block from my office is dangerous. This place is good, and actually is my favorite one in downtown Berkeley! They give you plenty of filling rather than a ton of rice to fill you up. They also wrap it in a way that doesn't just fall apart when you eat it. The fresh is very fresh, and their toppings are flavorful. I love that you can substitute brown rice (makes me feel a *teeny tiny bit* healthier) for an extra charge. They're also very friendly and patient. When I came here for the first time, although their menu wasn't very extensive, I took a long time to decide. But they were really friendly and double checked to make sure I wanted xyz ingredients in there before they rolled it up. This is the best sushi place I have visited in a long time. I ordered the S7 "Mexico City" Spicy roll and it was just so flavorful with the perfect amount of spice. It was filled with hamachi; which is a variety of fish I'm apparently unfamiliar with (although I originally thought it was a variety of tuna due to Google naming it as "yellowtail hamachi"). I am so glad I picked this roll because it was the perfect combination of savory, sweet and spicy. I will have a difficult time deciding whether I want to have this roll again or try a different kind on my next visit. Since I was particularly hungry tonight, I opted to get mochi roll ice cream afterward. It comes in six pieces from three larger ones that were cut into halves; each one being a different flavor. This place has changed owners. They don't have the same burrito-sized sushi rolls I used to love and crave. I drove all the way to Berkeley to get one to find the restaurant had totally changed. I was pretty disappointed. That said, the food (basically normal Japanese/sushi joint fare) was still pretty good and the service was really attentive. It was still good, but I wish I could give it 4.5 stars because it just isn't the same. I used to go here to get something I couldn't get anywhere else (or at least not as good anywhere else). They also don't let anyone inside (for dining or bathrooms). We did find a lovely boba place down the street that let us use their restrooms. Vegetarian review here so I can't really speak for the fish side of things! I dropped by Sumo Roll at about 4:30 pm on a Tuesday. As expected, it was a bit of a ghost town so there was no line. Woot! I ordered the Kabuki roll for myself and the Hawaiin roll for my friend. It was great to see the rolls being made because the worker was really stuffing them full of filling! This is definitely one place where you really get what you pay for. It was nice to see that the person making the food had good hygiene and worked towards preventing cross contamination between items. The Kabuki roll was good in terms of flavor and the sauce that was included in it was really tasty! The eggplant was bit dry and I do wish that there had been more of it in the actual roll. The yuzu green beans in here did absolutely nothing for me in terms of flavor. I suppose you can appreciate the crunch they pack if you're looking for texture, but honestly, I just felt like they were crunchy bland beans. I couldn't help but compare the Kabuki to the Sushirrito vegetarian option since they both contain eggplant. Gotta say Sushirrto wins in terms of texture and taste for me, but I still enjoyed the food at Sumo Roll. I think the sauce was the real star of the dish. My friend seemed to like his Haiwaiin roll too so thumbs up from a seafood consumer too :P Service was swift and friendly which was really nice. The place also seemed clean and organized.
