We stumbled on this place after a Cal Performance and missing out reservation at another place. So glad we did. On a Sunday night they seated us right away. The portions are big. And the food quality is great. The couple who runs it were very sweet and service was great. We got rolls, bowls, burrito. It was delicious. Beautiful presentation of the plates. read more

I walked into this restaurant because I needed to grab dinner prior to heading somewhere else. They have sushi burrito and poki/poke bowl, along with monthly special of pork belly dish. They did not have too many customers inside, but definitely have plenty of tables and seats. I ordered one burrito and one poki/poke bowl (which you can order by marking the ingredients you want on a menu with whiteboard marker). They took pretty long time to make both of the items. Two items took them over 25 minutes to make. Knowing that other poki/poke bowl places take only like 4-5 minutes to add ingredients into the bowl as you choose (like chipotle), this was a drawback. The food however tasted great. The sushi burrito was packed with ingredients, which is probably why they took a long time. The bowl had nice portion of rice, protein, and other selected toppings. Overall, a great place to go and get nice sushi burrito or bowl. Just keep in mind that they will take a bit of time to have your food ready! read more

Incredible vegan sushi burrito. First time I've ever tried anything like this! Super friendly and great service! Only downfall was the "spicey" edamame, wasn't spicey at all. read more

Very nice staff! I really like their menu items: sushi burritos, sushi, poke bowls, appetizers..I wonder why it's not more popular with other students. I would rate higher, but this is based off the poke bowl (I would probably come back for the sushi). I think they forgot one of the ingredients, but I didn't realize until later. Maybe it's because I got brown rice, but the entire bowl seemed off with the flavors. There wasn't as much protein as you would get from other poke places too. I think it was an underwhelming bowl. Will probably try to come back for the rolls! read more

The service here is the best! Very friendly server that compliments the good food and reasonable prices. We had the tasty sushi burritos (snow crab and yellow fin tuna), miso soup, and takoyaki. Interior is cozy and clean. Worth a visit! read more

Loved the crab salad and Lion King roll! Chicken Katsu don was a bit bland that came only with rice and chicken katsu..while unagi and gyu don both would come with veggie, egg, etc. But the katsu was okay so it's still worth a 5 star ;) read more

Best sushi and sushi burrito in the whole Bay Area loved the food fantastic food and excellent customer service

I really enjoyed the poke bowl I got here (super good and big chunks of poke as well). I also love the takoyaki here! I have tried three rolls- the Mexican roll, the Osaka tuna roll, and the lion king. All of them were delicious and had lots of fish! For the Osaka tuna, the jalapeño was really strong so I would recommend asking them to take it out if you can't handle the jalapeño! I would definitely recommend this place also because the staff is extremely friendly and customer service is on point :) read more

I have been coming here for about a year now and it's become one of my favorite places to dine at. You might find this place on the Internet, read the description, and come in meaning to order sushi burritos and poke bowls, but what keeps me coming back are the other items on their menu. Just imagine yourself in a restaurant far more upscale and decorated by Michelin stars, and order from one of their entrees. I think you will find the food just as sumptuous. Throw in an appetizer and you'll have yourself a veritable feast. With the food presented on hefty, attractive plates and bowls, the simplistic but stylish Japanese-themed decor, and staff who are both friendly and attentive, the experience comes pretty close. I started out eating their sushi burritos before moving to their poke bowls. I don't remember when, but it was probably at the recommendation of the lady waiting on me that I tried one of their entrees; I think it was the kakunidon. The portions were just right for me, leaning towards filling, and the pork belly tasted excellent. Other recommendations I have are: - takoyaki - unadon - kakuni ramen (when they have it) - kazan burrito I liked all the sushi rolls I've ordered so far, but I'm not particular when it comes to these things and I haven't fully explored all their sushi options yet. I'd like to take one more moment to focus on the decor. When I first came here, I think I was sitting at one of those small, round tables toward the back of the restaurant. The table and chairs felt cheap, but it got the job done. Over the past year I've seen them replace those with nicer wood tables, and now they have a bench there with those tables! Also, they spent the holidays repainting the interior. I like the new aesthetic; I think it looks more modern and fresh than the old one. Again, I highly recommend the food here. It won't cost an arm and a leg, the service is top-notch, and the owners are always working to improve things, and to me that shows that they really care about delivering the best experience. read more

Came here with a friend from out of town, because we wanted a sushi experience without the sit-down restaurant experience. We went right when it opened on a Friday, and we weren't expecting a wait, especially since aside from me and my friend, there was one other person in the store. However, there was only one woman working and she was rushing back and forth trying to take our orders, making the sushi burritos, and ringing us up. It looked exhausting. Finally, a second employee joined her and then things seemed to run a bit smoother. I ordered the Kamikaze and my friend ordered the Hawaiian. Mine was delicious and exactly what I needed on such a hot day. My friend loved hers too and said that she was thinking about buying another one to take with her! They have indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a self-serve water station, which was convenient. Next time I'm downtown, I'll definitely keep this place in mind! read more

Today's experience at Sumo Roll has caused me to do a complete 180 on this place. We were just strolling by this afternoon when we saw "Tasting Event" signs on its windows and decided to see what it entailed. We found out that they were hosting a free event for Five Stars members - which I am - where they were offering plentiful samples of all of their rolls. Turns out I just didn't order the right ones for me the first time around! I was able to try every single roll and enjoyed most of them. My favorite was the Baja California and I really liked the Shinsen. The owners hosted the event and were lovely. To cap things off, I couldn't believe it when they offered my boyfriend and I all their leftover sushi since we were the last ones at the event. We were blown away and now have dinner and lunch free of charge. We will definitely be back. read more

I was super excited to try this place upon arriving in Berkeley, and I wasn't disappointed! I got the Hawaiian Burrito and I was pretty satisfied with it. Everything tasted really nice and fresh. I picked out the carrots, because I forgot to ask for it without them and I'm not a fan. I wish they would have had a little bit more fish in there, but it was still really good! The inside is also pretty clean. They have small cups you can fill with water for free, which is especially nice since all the bottled beverages are around $2.95. Speaking of price, I think it's pretty reasonable. For around $10 you can get a pretty good + healthy meal! I'd come back! :-)) read more

Having a sushirrito place literally a block from my office is dangerous. This place is good, and actually is my favorite one in downtown Berkeley! They give you plenty of filling rather than a ton of rice to fill you up. They also wrap it in a way that doesn't just fall apart when you eat it. The fresh is very fresh, and their toppings are flavorful. I love that you can substitute brown rice (makes me feel a *teeny tiny bit* healthier) for an extra charge. They're also very friendly and patient. When I came here for the first time, although their menu wasn't very extensive, I took a long time to decide. But they were really friendly and double checked to make sure I wanted xyz ingredients in there before they rolled it up. I've already been back a few times and will continue to come back here! read more

I came here for my friend's birthday- and just saw that she left a review here as well! The service is incredible, as well as the food. The waitress was so kind and accommodating, especially for such a large crowd. I ordered the unadon, which really hit the spot. The fish was tender and the rice portion was very filling. Their cheesecake (which they kindly treated us to for my friend's birthday!) was probably one of the best I've ever had. Their lion king roll was also absolutely delicious. 10/10 would return again. read more

Came here for lunch. Very nice service and portions. The sushi deluxe set had quite large pieces. Overall good place

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: 1) Establishment is clean and well-kept 2) Great Service, food was delivered to you after ordering 3) Reasonably priced, healthy, and hunger satisfying. 4) Kamikaze is a must try because it's full of flavor. As part of my New Year Resolution, I would like to embark on new food adventures that I haven't had the pleasure to do so in 2016, which is why I decided to try out the sushi burrito at Sumo Roll. This is my first time ever having a sushi burrito, so I didn't know exactly what to expect at first, but I knew that I must try this unique cross between the traditional sushi and the burrito. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the "Kamikaze" because it contained spicy tuna and wasabi aioli, which sparked my curiosity. As I bit into it, it had a subtle spice to it and then after letting it linger in my mouth for awhile, it BURST with even more flavor as the taste of the wasabi aioli came into play with the spicy tuna. It was not overly spicy, but just enough for you to know that it is spicy. The Kamikaze contained a lot of vegetables and pickled daikon, so it cooled down the heat of the spicy tuna and wasabi after you had the chance to taste their full effects. Overall, I would describe the Kamikaze as a well orchestrated symphony because there is so many ingredients in it that worked so well with each other in order to produced a memorable and enjoyable food experience. I also had the opportunity to try the "Hawaiian" and overall I did not enjoy it as much as the the "Kamikaze" because I could not taste what is inside the wrap, but instead my palate was more focused on the nori and tasted that more than anything else. read more

This place is right next to Saturn's Cafe. Really small shop but it makes up for it with the great customer service and food offered! Walked in and it was not busy in the afternoon. Got the takoyaki and clams with udon. Takoyaki was one of the best I've had. The udon with clams was delicious too and portion size was generous. Clams were infused with sake tasted rich in freshness. Would come back a second time to try something new! read more

We tried this sushi place for the first time today on our lunch break, and boy, it was so good! My boss and I ordered poke bowls with our respective bases, proteins and toppings. Firstly, I love this place. Great food, can't go wrong with anything from the menu really. My personal favorites are the Lion King Roll and the Gyudon. The last thing I personally expected to see was cheesecake on the menu, and even less expected was that it was house-made. I'm telling you, easily one of the best cheesecakes I have ever had. Really, this cheesecake has no right being that good. 10/10 recommend it for $5. read more

This is the best sushi place I have visited in a long time. I ordered the S7 "Mexico City" Spicy roll and it was just so flavorful with the perfect amount of spice. It was filled with hamachi; which is a variety of fish I'm apparently unfamiliar with (although I originally thought it was a variety of tuna due to Google naming it as "yellowtail hamachi"). I am so glad I picked this roll because it was the perfect combination of savory, sweet and spicy. I will have a difficult time deciding whether I want to have this roll again or try a different kind on my next visit. Since I was particularly hungry tonight, I opted to get mochi roll ice cream afterward. It comes in six pieces from three larger ones that were cut into halves; each one being a different flavor. Two of them were green colored with slightly different hues and a nearly indistinguishable green tea flavor. The third one was purple and had a blue berry cheese cake flavor. This place was the cat's meow and I really look forward to visiting this location again. read more

Delicious and fresh sushis. Highly recommend. My favorite spot in Berkeley for take-out

It's a really cute place to visit, the workers there are very nice, I had a sushi burrito and takoyaki, the texture of the takoyaki was okay, but the sushi burrito definitely was decent, as it was wrapped tightly and the fish quality was good. read more

This place was seriously trash ! Like they're sushi burritos were very overpriced ! $17 for a sushi burrito only thing I added was some cream cheese ! After me and all my friends ordered she told us that the food wouldn't be out until 30 minutes ! Rude ! Why wouldn't you tell us in the beginning before we paid ? DUMB. Then we get the burrito and it's NOT EVEN GOOD. Not even in the slightest bit .Sushi Secrets is much much better , that's my go to but it was closed so decided to give this 4 and a half star place ! Wrong ! Will be returning to my original , sushi secrets . Thank you NEXT!! read more

This place has changed owners. They don't have the same burrito-sized sushi rolls I used to love and crave. I drove all the way to Berkeley to get one to find the restaurant had totally changed. I was pretty disappointed. That said, the food (basically normal Japanese/sushi joint fare) was still pretty good and the service was really attentive. It was still good, but I wish I could give it 4.5 stars because it just isn't the same. I used to go here to get something I couldn't get anywhere else (or at least not as good anywhere else). Now I wouldn't dive all the way to Berkeley to eat here, but if you are already in town, it's a good place to go! read more

Hands down, this is our favy sushi spot. Nicest owners ever and you feel well taken care of. We started off picking up their amazing sushi burritos but now go into the dinning room to enjoy the full monte. Had the Mexico City roll today and it was sublime. My favorite sushi place in Berkeley by far... The staff here is extremely friendly. The waitress is super helpful, and the food is delicious! Great rice, AMAZING vegetarian miso soup and other vegetarian options. And they don't put huge amounts of teriyaki or other weird sauce on all vegetarian rolls like some places do, which is so refreshing! My family likes meat and loves this place too. read more

This place is really similar to sushiritto except that it is in Berekely. I ordered a Baja California and I was not a fan of the beet slaw. It was a very odd combination of flavors in my mouth ... Sour, tangy, all the great from the tempura shrimp. My friend ordered a Kami Kaze and also had the same impression as me that there were too many flavors going on. I know everyone raves about this place but I wouldn't recommend it. The interior is cute and very clean. read more

This is one of those places where I have no idea how they ended up with a 4 1/2 star yelp & google review. The sushi was fresh enough. Nothing special. The chefs knife skills and the quality of the rice left something to be desired. I must add the disclaimer that I've been to Japan, I expect a lot out of any sushi restaurant in the Bay Area with a good review. I dated a Michelin Star chef. And my dad was a commercial fisherman and I've been eating sushi since I was 5 years old in Seattle. Basically I'm a snob and give harsh reviews. I usually don't leave yelp reviews unless something is quite good, or really really bad. This 4 1/2 star rating just confused me. The service was good. However it took a long time considering there was only one other table in the restaurant. Also I was served foods I told her I was allergic too. read more

Service was amazing, our server was very attentive and I love how consistently she refilled out water. We ordered the Lion King roll, nigiri deluxe, and a rainbow roll. Came out to about $50, and we're both stuffed. For a Sunday afternoon it wasn't too crowded which is great if you're looking for a more low-key vibe. This place used to specialize in just sushi burritos and a few other items but now that the menu is expanded, service is extremely slow... we waited over 40 min for an online order that we were picking up. They also don't let anyone inside (for dining or bathrooms). We did find a lovely boba place down the street that let us use their restrooms. Overall, I did not feel welcome here was my biggest issue. I'm hoping the food we ordered is still consistently good but I'm still waiting to pick it up. read more
