The service is phenomenal here, with knowledgeable employees always ready to help. When I was trying out a pair of Keens, the person assisting me instantly recognized I needed to size up and knew exactly how the model compared to similar options from the brand. When we were clearly carrying a lot (with coffees in hand), another employee proactively offered to hold our items at the front. I also love the highly tactile store experience. There's a wall for you to test your climbing shoes, a rocky ramp to test hiking shoes, and other cool displays around the store. It has been quite a long time since I last reviewed Summit Hut. In fact it was one of my first reviews using Yelp, 11 years ago. When I lived in Tucson, they were always my "go to" store for everything related to the outdoors. They stock high tech gear with superior quality. Now I live in Indiana and they still work for me since I have not been able to find another store quite like the Hut. I recently made an online purchase of camping equipment. Instead of simply shipping my order, their staff called me to review my purchase. Who does that in this day and age? Always thoroughly knowledgeable about the products they sell, we discussed why I had to buy a different brand than what I used in the past. I felt more comfortable in spending a lot of dough on a different brand of my new equipment. If I have to go online to get what I need, then the Hut is still my "go to" place to shop for anything related to the outdoors. read more

I went in to purchase some new sandals for my over seas trip and I got more than that, Troy helped me understand the shoe fitting process in a simple way and actually took the time to measure my feet. No other sportswear business has ever done that. When it comes down to it, shopping for outdoor and/or athletic apparel and gear, one really does need an expert for things such as proper fit, sizing, etc. Summit Hut is my go to exactly these reasons! Their customer service and attention to detail with shoe fittings is top notch. Plan on spending at least 20-30 minutes getting measured and testing different shoes out. It's worth it, folks. The process is super thorough and you'll leave feeling confident in your purchase. From measuring, to learning how tie your laces, to testing insoles, they've got you covered. And trust them! My husband ignored their advice and ended up having to return his shoes. I followed their advice and committed to a proper fitting and I'm thrilled with my purchase! The store is gorgeous. One of the best things about Summit Hut is the knowledgeable and friendly staff. I love knowing that the staff share my interests/hobbies and therefore have their own expertise on which to draw for recommendations. They're also great about directing you to the most knowledgeable employee for the item(s) for which you're looking, if they feel someone else knows more than they do about it. On a recent visit to buy new hiking boots, I was helped for over 30 minutes by a staff member who enthusiastically chatted with me about pros and cons of every pair I tried, and, when I hesitantly said I might want to compare the front-runners with a pair they didn't have in store, he responded, "That's a smart move! Why don't I put these ones on hold for now, to give you time to go try the others and think it over? If you want these ones, they'll be here. If not, no sweat!" I did end up going back the next day for the pair being held for me, but I really appreciated the fact that there was no pressure at all to make a purchase. This interaction wasn't an exception, either; every time I shop at Summit Hut, I truly feel that the employees genuinely care about me finding the best item to fit my needs. For Christmas, I gifted my wife hiking boots. I first tried some Columbias from Amazon. Great boots, but two sizes on either side of her foot didn't fit. Next stop: REI. The gentleman there was pretty knowledgeable. Found some boots that would work. They were comfortable enough, provided enough support where needed. Light enough. Price was about what we expected ($110). Not quite convinced, she put them on hold for a day to think about it (and to pay Summit Hut a visit). Their guarantee is impressive: returns up to a year. So off to Summit Hut. Met Nick there. Need to interject that my wife and I joked that one of the requirements to work at Summit Hut is that you have to be chill. Very chill. Nick was chill. But boy, did he know a thing or two about hiking and hiking boots. More than what we got at REI, Nick was extremely knowledgeable. He had my wife step certain ways to test out the boots. He showed the Serpa knot and another knot that helps address specific spots in the boot, for example, he used the Serpa knot to help heel slippage. He had asked our price range, quizzed my wife on how experienced she was in hiking, what kind of hikes she planned on doing, etc. He had her try on five kinds of boots. She found a pair that seemed to really work well. They were comfortable and met all her requirements. She was actually very happy with these boots. To top it off, they were returns (marked "Scratch and Dent" LOL) so they were only $82. Nice discount for something that looks brand new with absolutely nothing wrong with it. Their return policy is the same as REI, one year to like what you have. You can get some cheaper and also big brand names from Big Five or Dick's Sporting Goods or Sportsmans Warehouse. You can get good help at those stores, too. But I don't know if you can get expert help like we did from Nick. Having someone like Nick can and does make all the difference in the world with something like hiking boots. You certainly do not want to be five or ten miles or more in and find out that the boots you are wearing are not really working out. Also, you may be paying a little more for your equipment at Summit Hut, but you can't beat their return policy/guarantee. Summit Hut carries hiking, camping, and climbing equipment and apparel. They don't carry bicycling equipment like REI does. I highly recommend Summit Hut. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Tucson-top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. "Good god above, I am in Elysium!" (If you know that reference, we need to connect.) This place is spankin'! They have just about everything you need for car camping, backpacking, hiking, trail running, general running, climbing and general fitness. They even have this little section with gag gifts and toys for children. They even rent out gear! Deposits are generally between $100 and $200 for 1-5 day rentals, which are from about $4 to $50 depending on what you need. For rent, they have tents, packs, sleep bags, sleeping pads, climbing shows and trekking polls. And while this place is crazy pricey -- expect to spend upwards from $130 on shoes and somewhere around $225 for a tent -- the quality is spot on. This is the type of gear, with careful planning and attention, meant to last you years upon years. Still, I don't understand why one would ever want to spend $40 on a tank top. So, I have twice been to Summit Hut this month alone. The first time I was looking for a tent; the second visit, hiking boots. I felt turned off on the first visit. I am a novice outdoorswoman and know little about bang plates, dead reckoning, alpine camping, base camping, how to use a bivy or a butane stove. Not yet anyway. So, when I walked into this space, which is clearly designed and designated for mountain folk, and without much of a greeting, I wanted to turn on my heels and hurry out. But I was curious about their tents. I kindly asked an attendant for support and while he pointed me to the lot, he was not any more helpful than that. Plus, the supply seemed terribly, terribly low. Appeared they only had about six different types of tents -- by Marmot, Kelty, North Face and the like. On my second trip, I arrived with more confidence and tenacity. Interestingly, I got much better support. Was it me, or was it the different staff? Hum... I wanted to see the hiking boots and the tents (again). Shortly thereafter, I had received ample support picking out a nice, sturdy and supportive pair of very comfortable boots. Next, I was watching one of the attendants pitch a Nemo tent. By the way folks, check this company out! Andrew, the resident expert extraordinaire, turned me on to the line. The tent, the Galaxy 2P, is a gorgeous, efficient, ultra study and easy to assemble tent. He mentioned that Big Agnes helped get this company off the ground. I fell instantly in love the the tent whilst watching him pull it out of the bag and pitch it on the store floor. All the while, he provided an amazing and comprehensive overview of the manufacturer's history and the wonderful, quirky nuances of the tent. And he even took the time to give me some wonderful tips about pitching and maintaining a tent to aid with ease and comfort. What, what?! All this consultation...for free?! It was like having a private trainer for 20 minutes! Andrew knows his stuff, and he didn't treat me like an amateur. All the while he asked me about my interests and needs, informing me about cool customized features I hadn't noticed. Right there is reason enough to return again and again. I found Summit Hut through an advertised slot for Free Yoga on Friday's. I was surprised when I arrived and discovered it was not a different type of facility. I wasn't exactly expecting a gym, but I wasn't expecting a store either. This place is amazing, and turned out to be a hiking and camping type of place. There is really beautiful apparel for both women and men alike available for sale. When I showed interest in a dress on a mannequin they came over "lickity-split" to help remove it for me to try on in their fitting rooms that were centrally located. There are some sporting equipment and I think I saw fishing gear. They had simple jewelry and watches, hats and sunglasses available. They had footwear (proper assisted fittings available), and all top quality for slippers (sandals) and hiking shoes, etc. If they need to order your size they will ship it to the store to no extra cost to you. Through the back, the instructor was there waiting for everyone to find their place and join in. He was extremely knowledgeable, and i felt like he had some type of medical background or at least extremely well versed in anatomy and beyond basic understanding of how it works. He was extremely professional. Although I am by no means a guru I have attended many yoga classes and this was my favorite. It's the first time I felt like my posture was actually positively affected by the movements. It was also the longest class I have sat in on. I feel like this was beneficial as well. I highly recommend Summit Hut for both shopping as well as yoga. They told me they offer another class in Oro valley so that's something else to check out! They are a bit pricey but like I said, good quality- so you're getting what you pay for, and fortunately you are also helping our local economy being that they are locally owned! I've found the prices to be slightly higher than online stores (without factoring shipping costs), but Summit Hut is always competitive. My wife and I spend a lot of time hiking and camping. Everything we have ever needed to make our adventures safe and happy have come from Summit Hut. Need the right hiking boots? These people will get you sorted no matter how long it takes. Need the right backpack or tent? The right one is in stock. I read some of these negative reviews on Yelp, and I wonder where the hell these people have been shopping. Both locations are very clean, well-spaced, and organized! The staff are friendly and helpful. I'm no expert in outdoor adventures, but they provide great advice and know their products well. I like shopping the clearance racks here. You can find some good deals. The selection isn't as large as REI, but you're going to support a favorite Tucson local business. No, it's not inexpensive but you also know it's going to serve you well for a long time because the products they offer are top quality. I've been to the new REI in town and personally I like the Hut a bit better. I really like the Hut's knowledgeable staff who take the time to answer your questions and fit you you up right. One of ladies there recently helped me find the perfect backpack for my laptop and I don't think I could have found it without her suggestions and help. I was there a week ago to buy some good quality walking shoes. The service is unbelievably good. I have been buying size 13 shoes since high school and haven't measured my feet since then (40 years ago). The nice clerk (Tracy I think) asked if I wouldn't mind taking my shoes off and when she looked at my feet sensed they might be bigger and asked if she could measure them. It turns out I am 13.5-14. Most stores don't carry bigger than size 13 (and even that is limited), but Summit Hut does. I got a pair of Topo in size 14 that are the most comfortable shoes I have owned. I also needed new laces for the hiking boots I was wearing and they replaced the laces for me, even though it was a small purchase. If you want to support a local, independent business with great service and selection, there is no reason to go anywhere else. read more

I let him know what I was looking for and he was extremely helpful in directing me to what would work best for me and my needs. Summit Hut's new location (more than a year now) is fantastic and the store has evolved. Good for them. Adapt or die. Not everything to my tastes, but there is no arguing it was done with skill and passion. While I enjoy a few other local establishments (I am looking at you Miller's), Summit Hut remains my go to to place for the latest and greatest - both regarding gear and advice - local, back country, what have you. Generally, Summit Hut may appear a bit more expensive than other stores, but as noted in my earlier review, i do believe quality costs. Nevertheless, there are serious deals to be had, if you scout around. I am not a "shopper" per se, but I have bumped into some serious marked down treasures here. I would say 1 to 2 great deals per year for a number of years now. Very important is the fact that there are 4 or 5 long-time sales staff who I will seek out for their specific and expert advice regarding outdoor gear or clothing or local information. Their insights are informed, helpful, and spot on. I have not been steered wrong. There seems to be a few younger staff following in the footsteps of the experienced staff. I guess that's the thing. I Heart Summit Hut because they don't look at me a judge that I'm not an outdoors person. And even though I'm not they have lots of things I use like water bottles, t-shirts and unusual nicknacks. I was looking for solar cell phone options and they had them. One was a complete kid with rechargeable batteries and the other was for charging everything from your iPhone to your old no name MP3 player. I was very impressed with the teamwork. I asked a question from the single guy standing at the registers and he didn't call anyone he just grabbed the keys and began helping me. Another employee saw the void and popped into the vacant area, very smooth. I've been to Summit Hut several times before to browse different clothing items, but my experience completely changed when I set out to try on my first pair of hiking boots. There is a reason for all the positive reviews here on Yelp... The customer service, especially with shoe fittings, is excellent! Paul not only measured my feet and helped me find the right size, but he also taught me the best way to tie laces for extra ankle support, patiently swapped out different Super Feet insoles to see which fit my feet, and showed me the importance of good quality socks. Besides choosing my hiking boots, I also learned some new things, like how your toes should not be jammed against the front of your boot when walking downhill (thus, choose your shoe size and insoles wisely). Overall, I was very impressed with the level of detail employees go into when doing fittings. Sure you could probably find most of the stuff in the store cheaper online - but I'm pretty sure you won't find anyone as knowledgeable about it and willing to spend the time discussing it over with you. On another pack comparison shopping excursion last night, we were helped by two different employees to examine, try on, check the fit & load up multiple packs. They are very helpful there & always ready to discuss the pros & cons of any item in the store. The best of the two Summit Hut stores is this one, hands down. Better layout, nicer store, better parking situation, more spacey and airy (more windows) just all makes this a more pleasant Summit Hut. I love the outdoor sales they have here, wonderful stuff and good prices, lots of informational booths, food samplings and quality gear. I have bought everything from simple day hike water canteens here, backpacking food, gifts for people, a super light weight tent, sunglasses, hiking socks and clothes, and loads more. I like to keep an eye on for sales. There is a nice selection of outdoor books and maps. And I recently had a wonderful experience getting hiking booths with a wonderful employee named Kathy. Highly advise if you want to spend time looking at stuff that you set up an appointment- they will spend even more dedicated time with you with advanced notice. They have a great selection of outdoor wear and clothing, as well as camping supplies for the most serious adventurers, or car campers alike. Their staff is super friendly, and they have regular, relevant classes and events. I would highly recommend stopping here before hitting up a chain store and supporting your local Tucson business! Yeah, it can be a little pricey. But it's a local outfitter for hiking and outdoor activities. And since I would rather support local shops, I'll pay the extra dough. Seems like there is almost always something here on sale as well. I've gotten some excellent deals on shorts and oddly enough, boxers and pajama bottoms. So if you've got a keen eye, the steeper prices can indeed be avoided. Great selection of everything you need for enjoying the great outdoors. And great service from the staff. They certainly know their stuff and are eager to help out. A tip--if you can, decline a shopping bag and they will give you a wooden nickel to place into one of two different bins for a donation (given by Summit Hut) to a couple different charities. I'm a weirdo. I don't go to Summit Hut for the outdoors wear. Nope. I go for the cards. They're just the best cards ever. I'll make the 20 minute trek for the perfect wedding, birthday, or thank you card I love them so much. We also stocked up here for our international travels. My husband's the outdoorsy type and he's purchased a variety of items here - all with positive results. Most recently was a hiking backpack and they were offering it at a significant discount. He had a potential issue and emailed them - they were quick and friendly with a response - and with a little research, it ended up not being anything after all. He really appreciated their help. Summit Hut, please understand you have the most awesome stuff and I could happily spend a lot of money at your store so why do you have the pushy sales staff? You should know that your stuff will fly off the racks so just tell your sales guys and gals to relax. Dave, one of your personnel, was happy to yell ( and I do mean YELL) at us as we browsed "DO YOU NEED HELP WITH ANYTHING TODAY!!?" . We were only ten feet away so I think he needs to switch to decaf. Please, let your good customers browse since so many love your store dearly and can't stand being badgered.
