I used to not be 100% sure you should completely trust a Chinese/Japanese hybrid restaurant. It has always freaked me out a little bit BUT I suppose it's a lot like what Tex-Mex has evolved into. A food genre of its own. The service is always friendly and we've never actually eaten in here. I usually pick up sushi for my wife and take it to-go. However, they have never messed up our order, so that's a nice thing. My wife rates it very average in quality, but they are very friendly and have good prices. Okay, color me surprised. There's actually some decent sushi here. The reason I'm surprised at this is because it has an all-you-can-eat sushi option. Places like that just don't normally have good sushi. And from what I tasted, this restaurant has sushi that in the high 3-star, possibly low 4-star range. Not bad at all. The dining area is small, the sushi bar was smaller, and as a whole it was all decorated in a typically typical fashion. So I came in for lunch. I'm not an all-you-can-eat kind of guy, so I asked for the normal menu. I ordered an iced tea (odd, the only kind they had was sweetened raspberry tea, but I ordered it anyway even though I like it unsweetened) and two rolls: The Summer Palace roll [see photo] and the I-don't-remember-the-name Roll with tuna, avocado, and cucumber. Prices were very reasonable with the Summer Palace Roll coming in at $11 (one of the more expensive ones on the list) and the other roll coming in at about $7. The Summer Palace Roll was quite a bit bigger than I expected, and had a very good flavor to it. The down side to them was that 1) the rice was VERY sticky, often causing difficulty in removing the pieces from the tray, and 2) they didn't fully close at the bottom and when you picked one up you had to be careful because the bottom would always open up into a horseshoe shape, and you stood the chance of losing the roll's contents onto the tray. It's a good spot for lunch if you're craving sushi but you're in a hurry though -- the lady making the sushi was FAST! I had my order in front of me less than 10 minutes after ordering. I had General Tso's and usually I find that most places there's more breading than chicken. Not so much here. The chicken had just the right amount of meat and the spice was on point. My wife and I are dedicated "band parents" so when another couple (also band parents) suggested we meet for Happy Hour before a parent meeting, we thought that would be great! And, it was. The sushi was fresh and delicious; and, the beers were cold and refreshing, despite running out of the Kirin we were all drinking; and, one of us had to switch to Tsingtao. My only complaint is that the bills got switched; and, I didn't keep a copy of the detailed billing, for fear that they would mix up the checks again. So all I have is the receipt of the total bill. For some reason Chinese food just doesn't wow me. Still, I was pleasantly surprised with nice fresh vegetables with tasty fresh shrimp and scallops. I had the Seafood Delight which also included a few pieces of lobster, plenty of scallops and shrimp, and the imitation crab (which they should just leave out of the dish...it tastes like garbage). The wine sauce was tasty and not overbearing. I can't say I was wowed....but Chinese food never wows me so take that for what it's worth. Summer Palace is, while an interesting mix, at least that's what we thought when we first visited, is an excellent Sushi/Asian restaurant. I had never thought a restaurant to do both Sushi/Japanese and Chinese-/Korean-American food/. I have enjoyed the Sushi and Japanese aspects to such a great extent that I have yet to try my own portion of the non-Sushi menu items; I guess I'll have to make a special trip :) The sushi rolls and individual pieces are thicker and longer than at any other sushi restaurant I have visited, but without sacrificing flavor or quality, and somehow it is also a decent price, being not too much more than or equal to competitors. Until the pandemic this was our go to place, mainly for the Sushi Buffet, which was (and hopefully will be again) a great value and awesome experience. Even with the pandemic and restrictions, much to our joy, they have remained open and are still serving take-out and delivery for both Sushi and their other Asian foods. I look forward to eating there again soon and hope that Summer Palace will remain, grow, and open up it's lobby again so I can get more Sushi Buffet! read more

The food wasn't terrible, but it lacked flavor and the sauce seemed like it was just soy sauce. Not sure if this was typical, but for the price I expected better. The service was fast and friendly but that didn't make the food taste any better. I would give them another chance... if someone else was paying. After looking up the places I bookmarked, Summer Palace was close by and I thought I would give it a whirl. As I was approaching the door I see a sign that says "All you can eat sushi" and thought... I scanned the menu to see what the Chinese offerings were but the sushi in the case looked fresh so I ordered the "All you can eat sushi along with some miso soup and my usual iced tea. They did not have any lime so I had lemon with my tea this evening. While waiting for my miso soup I was brought some fried wonton strips with duck sauce to dip them in. It was different but I liked it. The miso soup was nothing special and a bit bland so I will skip it the next time I stop by. The sushi offered on the AYCE menu was a nice mixture of cooked and uncooked along with come nigiri offerings. I tried the spicy Tuna, spicy Salmon and Tuna and avocado rolls which are 8 pieces each. From the nigiri selection I had some Mackerel, Tuna, Escolar and Salmon. The presentation was a bit on the amateurish side and the rice could have been a wee bit stickier but the fish was good and fresh so for $18 I would call it a great deal if you are not looking for picture perfect sushi. Atmosphere - 3 Service - 4 Miso soup - 2 Spicy Tuna - 4 Spicy Salmon - 3 Tuna/Avocado - 2 Mackerel - 3 Tuna - 4 Escolar - 4 Salmon - 3 It is not the best sushi in town but if you are not nit picky on presentation, you will definitely leave happy. I am so glad I found this place. This is my main Chinese take out place. Yes, the pricing is about a dollar more compared to other places around the area but it's completely worth it. Their food quality is much better compared others. (Trust me, I've gone searching). The service is very friendly to compliment their welcoming dining area . I would never order take-out from here again. Would I try eat-in? Sushi? I'd have to be heavily intoxicated before I gave them a second chance. I prefer the freeze-dried, pour hot water on it and make it yourself kind compared to this overpriced barf-bowl. I poured it down the drain where it may have come from. Pork-fried rice? No. Bacon and pork fat fried rice. House Chicken. A specialty? Oh my effin god ... chicken was tasteless, no hint of any xaozing cooking wine, and asparagus (ASPARAGUS?) the size of baby carrots. Beef in Szechuan sauce? So many green and red peppers (cut 1.5 inch cubes) and a generic sauce flavored with hot sauce (and not even enough to give it a hope of being Szechuan) and flank steak that was probably cooked in a large vat hours before service, I'm not even saving it for the usual midnight snack. Hot and sour soup which was mediocre in both respects. A soggy egg roll that easily could have been Tostino's. You know that joke about after an hour of eating Chinese you want to eat more? This place alone could get rid of that stereotype. That being said, don't listen to me with regards to eat-in. The two are often very different experiences. Should they be? This is my favorite Chinese food place around here by far. It's not like the food they serve is totally different than the other places, but it is a step up from everyone else in quality. It just tastes better most of the time. It tastes fresher, and just had a better taste. I've eaten in there once, and it was nice, but I take out most of the time. And for a take out place, this is the best I have had. I'm not giving it five stars because it's take out, this isn't gourmet lol, but for what it is, it's pretty great. Compared to an authentic Chinese restaurant I'd give this only 2-3 stars, but for an American-Chinese fast food/takeout, meant mostly for convenience, I thought it was quite decent. It was fast, portions more than sufficient, service acceptable, with more comfortable seating than other places like this which usually have no booths or any semblance of decor. You pay a bit more for this. I am skeptical of places that offer mixed Asian fare e.g. Chinese/Japanese or Vietnamese/Thai etc it'd be like "specializing" in Italian & Greek cuisine or Cuban & Mexican. I guess they're capitalizing on Sushi-mania even though it's not Chinese, especially if people were asking for it. But I guess it's added income. I doubt they're worried about opinions like mine on this, since I saw a pretty steady stream of people picking up orders. I notice it's becoming pretty common. Before you know it, even Mickey D's will have a Sushi combo at the drive through. I had a vegetarian dish, Buddha's Delight (fried tofu and mixed vegetables stir fried in a sauce ) and Seafood Pan-fried Noodles. I've had the Buddha's Delight before, but remember it being much better. It was still pretty good, and the amount of tofu was generous. I ordered Conch Nigiri out of curiosity about the dual cuisine. The waitress brought Octopus instead ( conch, octopus, what's the diff right? Lol) which she replaced. It was not done as the Japanese make it, presentation was sloppy but tasted okay. The conch was chunky and very unevenly sliced. The rice in it was loose and fell apart with chopsticks. The seafood pan fried noodles was a mildly flavored dish as is the norm, though was a bit too mild I thought. The portions of shrimp and lobster in it were also generous, but I thought using Krab brought the dish down. Better not to include it at all or for the price $17+ could've used even a small amount of real crab. In summary, for a midweek, fast dinner it was better than most of the other takeout-type American-style Chinese food places in the area. read more

I order take out from Summer Palace on occasion when I don't feel like driving all the down Colonial for more authentic Chinese food at Tasty Wok. Summer Palace is a legit dine-in/take out Chinese food restaurant for the Avalon Park/Waterford area. I prefer Summer Palace over the other spots that are located in Avalon Park by far. Their hot'n'sour soup looks like the average Chinese take out hot n sour soup, but has good flavor and a good amount of sour. Just the way I like it. Portions are also very generous. For a $13 Szechuan Beef dinner combo you get a choice of soup (you can sub for hot n sour for a small add-on) an egg roll, and cha siu (red roasted pork) fried rice. They give you an entire rectangular plastic container of the Szechuan Beef. Other places will put both the rice and your Szechuan Beef in that container for their combos. So Summer Palace doesn't skimp on portions. I haven't had their sushi, so i can't comment on that. They do an AYCE for $18, probably on a limited selection basis. read more

I live down the street from this restaurant and I absolutely love it! My fiancé has actually said on prior occasions that "If I could live there, I would". I mean come on ... awesome all-you-can-eat sushi for $19.95!?!?! You can't beat that deal. The restaurant is small but defiantly packs a punch. Both their Chinese food and Sushi are the best in Avalon Park/Waterford Lakes. Service is always very prompt and the staff is very friendly. The all-you-can-eat menu is rather large and has a very good selection in both sushi and nigiri. Be warned though, if you don't finish the sushi you order from the all-you-can-eat menu, they charge you per piece left over. Luckily, I've never been charged, because I completely clear my plate. :-) The Chinese food is a little on the pricey side, but the quality and quantity seem better then any other Chinese take-out in the area . My friends wanted to check out the AYCE sushi special ($19.95/person) at Summer Palace so we tried it out the other night for dinner. The restaurant is very small, clean, and got pretty busy for a week night. The sushi menu was very limited but it did offer nigiri and basic sushi rolls. There was only one person behind the sushi bar and I must say, we were very surprised by the quickness at which our orders came out. However, I thought there was too much rice packed in each roll so by the end of our dinner, my small plate was about half-covered with leftover rice that I took off from my sushi pieces. Considering that it was AYCE, I didn't want to get too full from eating that extra amount of rice. The taste of the fish was decent but I've definitely had better. Summer Palace also serves traditional Chinese dishes which I thought was a little pricey compared to your typical Chinese take-out spots. But then again, I am comparing it to Chinese take-out. No value whatsoever. Must eat all the rice before ordering more or get charged .75 cents a piece. The rolls off the regular are about average. Very good lunch deal but questionable service. This was my first trip to Summer Palace. My group of friends, 4 guys, all of us got the General Tso chicken since it's a safe choice for a Chinese restaurant. The waiter gave us menus and some paper forms to order sushi. When he took the order, he asked for the sushi forms back. I asked to keep it because, since the dinner price was double what the lunch price is, if it wasn't enough, I wanted to order a sushi roll. He begrudgingly left it. But every time he came to refill the drinks, he'd ask for it again. After the third time, I literally explained to him "I've never been here before and I might order sushi if the Tso is too small." Finally he seemed to understand and left. The egg drop soup was good and everyone seemed to enjoy the wonton soup. When the Tso arrived, while I was trying to make sure I'd gotten my proper meal, and since the table next to us was eating sushi and it looked good, I thought I'd order something. That's when I noticed that the sushi menu and order form was gone. The waiter'd gotten it when I wasn't looking. The meal was fine and ended up being filling, but I'd wished I'd order sushi anyway. When the check arrived, it wasn't split. When the server came back, he agreed to split it. Normally, any restaurant will split the check and bring as many itemized checks as requested for the customer. Not this guy. He took the check to the counter then came back without any checks, just took our cards, one at a time, and brought them back with the receipts to be signed. Nothing itemized. Just, here's what you've been charged. That's just weird. How would you know if you were overcharged or not? First of all, regarding the sushi menu, I shouldn't have to explain myself. Second, he shouldn't have asked for it back when I told him I wanted to hang on to it. He could clearly see that I was looking at it. My friends were looking at it too. They all assumed, like I did, that the portion would be half the size because it's half the price. Third, what restaurant doesn't bring itemized receipts? That's pretty standard. I dined alone tonight at Summer Palace to try out a local place near me. I recently moved to the area. I'm a big fan of Chinese food, but this place doesn't do it for me. The service was great...very few people in the place on a Tuesday night, so the server was attentive with the water and anything else I needed. The atmosphere is nice..it's a small place, but the booths are nice and it's a pleasant change from the usual fast-food type Chinese places with the florescent lighting. The niceness of it all ended there for me. I had wonton soup and moo goo gai pan. The soup was fine, but my entree was not. The texture of the chicken was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Although it was definitely cooked all the way through, the chicken was chewy, as if it were still raw. It was really strange. I didn't even want to eat it, it was so chewy and odd. I mostly stuck to the vegetables in the dish, which were fine. I will say one positive thing about the entree, though: there was a lot of it. I eat a good amount and there was enough there for me to eat for 2-3 meals. Perhaps I ordered the wrong dish (the sushi there seems to be popular), but it will be a while before I come back again, if ever. read more

They advertised all you can sushi, but it was all you can eat rice instead. The rolls were overloaded with rice and/or cream cheese. You're given a "special" sushi menu that's limited to just typical sushi rolls, such as shrimp, avacodo, and tuna. Very few speciality rolls were on the "special" menu. During the dinner, I decided to remove some of the rice from the rolls. Then the manager confronted me and mentioned I need to finish the excess rice to avoid additional charges. I told her the rolls contained too much rice and her exact response was: "The restaurant need to make money too". So I decided to opt out of the all you can eat "special" and receive a bill for only the rolls that I consumed, which was cheaper than the $19.99 all you can eat price. If it weren't for them willing to let me pay per roll and not forcing me into the all you can eat deal, they would have received 1 star. I realize a restaurant needs to make money, but it was very obvious that Summer Palace was trying to maximize their profit from the all you can eat special by stuffing their sushi rolls and nagiri with rice and cream cheese. As far as the Chinese food there, I cannot rate them on that as I only went for the Sushi "special". read more
