Probably the best place for smoke meat outside of Montreal. I was in the area attending a baby shower so it was a no brainer that I had to make a visit afterwards. I can't help myself because it is so friggin' delicious! Not being an 8 hour car ride away is just a bonus. I asked them initially if there was an assorted meats plate option because I wanted to try some of their salami and turkey. They just said that it's all about the smoked meat here while the salami and turkey was something you can find similarly elsewhere on the deli shelves. They do those items in large per turkey orders so you can't really get a few slices even if you wanted. I decided to go with a small plate for dinner as it is about 1.5 sandwiches worth of meat. I forgot to ask for extra fatty cuts so they gave me a mix of lean and fatty pieces. It was so satisfying digging into the small mountain of slow-cooked protein that was fork tender. You would take a piece and gently pull it apart to see the grains of the meat. I had some dijon mustard at home so that really provided some acidic punch to balance out the fatty juice bits. There was about 3-4 slices of bread for you to make your own sandwich if you wanted but I just ate it bite for bite instead. Brisket sandwich was worst I ever had, by far. Brisket lacked much flavour, was very fatty, was coarsly cut. The sandwich fell apart. The bread was rye, but of very poor quality, and became soaked with fat from the meat. I had to finish the sandwich with cutlery. They provided only a small plastic fork for that. Unfortunately one person had come in right before and ordered 16 sandwiches... So the wait was already there. But it was definitely worth the wait!! Got a smoke meat sandwich and smoked meat poutine. The smoked meat was fall in your mouth done and it was amazing!!! Perfectly fatty, juicy, flavorful. The poutine could use some work, maybe crisper fries. They definitely did not have enough cheese curds for my liking, but the heavy was perfect. Flavorful and not salty. It felt like it was made with love! We ordered a poutine and a half pound of their smoked meat along with a side of rye bread - came to about $20 which wasn't bad at all. We asked if we could get the gravy on the side for the poutine but they said no which was a bummer since we knew the fries would get overly soggy by the time we got home. Yes it would have been way better fresh with the fries still nice and crispy, but it was still a very delicious poutine. I loved the squeaky cheese curds and the gravy was good although a bit salty. Still, you're not eating poutine to be healthy so overall it was super yummy. The smoked meat itself was okay - I understand what some reviewers are saying about it being dry - we got both dry and juicy pieces. The dry pieces were quite dry and really not good at all, but the tender juicy pieces were pretty tasty - definitely still need a nice helping of yellow mustard to pair it with! A bit of a gamble I guess, but because there's a chance of their smoked meat being dry, for that reason alone I would probably not get it again. Talking about mustard, we decided to order take out. It was 1 lb of their famous smoked meat with half a loaf of rye bread. To our surprise, they would not give us any sauce packets! They asked us for $1 for a squeeze of mustard into a sauce container. That was so off putting. So I deducted a star. Bread was light, meat was plentiful and the mustard is just enough to cut some of the fattiness. I got medium fatty for the meat (which is the default), great balance of meat, fat and salt. We are ex-Montrealers and raised on Schwartz's smoked meat before Celine Dion bought them out. My first taste of a Schwartz's sandwich was in 73 and I never quite forgot that taste. Fast forward to 97 when we "immigrated" to Toronto and we have NEVER been able to find a deli with THAT taste, until NOW! Incredible. In spite of hearing from friends that this was the real deal and that the owner of the place worked at Schwartz's for years, I still had my doubts. Pulling up to the place in a new-ish plaza on the Scarborough-Markham border was also a long way from replicating the feeling of being in Montreal. It's a nice open and clean spot and they use similar graphic design with their lettering to replicate Schwartz's. Regardless, you don't exactly get the feeling of being magically transported to Schwartz's...yet... Much of the menu is similar to Schwartz's but one nice change is that you can order a combo which comes with individual-sized portions of fries and coleslaw - along with a homemade pickle. I do recall at Schwartz's that you could only order a side of coleslaw and it was somewhere around $5 as it was an entire plate. Bottom line however, and what everyone wants to know, is does the smoked meat stack up (no pun intended) with Schwartz's and the other comparables in MTL? Simply put: it does. I may still have to give a slight edge to Schwartz's, but I mean it when I say 'slight'. There is so little difference and ultimately ultimately you're getting a fantastic smoked meat sandwich at Sumilicious. As the saying goes 'imitation is the highest form of flattery'. We just ate here and all I have to say is if you've ever had smoked meat from Shwartz in Montreal, DO NOT EXPECT IT TO BE ANYWHERE NEARLY AS GOOD. The smoked meat was edible but nothing to rave about. The meat was dry and very "crumbly". Its flavors lacked some seasoning or something incomparison to other smoked meat joints *ahem, cough* (Shwartz). Also, I guess what makes Shwartz more superior is the cut of meat they used. At Sumilious, it's either no marbling of fat in the pieces or you get HUGE chunks of fat that looks disgusting. But thanks to Schwartz's alumni Sumith Fernando, quality smoked meat has found its way to the GTA! The Sumilicious deli is located on the corner of Middlefield and Steeles. If you're stopping by for the first time, you're probably doing so to give their famous smoked meat sandwich a try, but this place is actually a deli too! You can grab smoked meat by the pound, brisket, karnatzel, turkey breast, mustard jars, pickles... you get the picture. For those of you stopping for just a meal though, there's a good amount of table seating if you want to eat in-store, or you can take it to go. I walked into this experience with pretty heavy expectations. I have been to Montreal several times, and tried both Schwartz's and Reuben's several times. I don't care if it's blasphemy; Reuben's is better than Schwartz's. I have always found Schwartz's to be dry in comparison, no matter if I asked for extra fatty meat, or smothered my sandwich in yellow mustard. So Sumilicious had some work to do to turn my expectations around. So how did they do? Sweet mother, they are doing things right over here in Ontario! Visually, the smoked meat sandwich looks just about the same as that from its Montreal counterpart, but holy moisture Batman! That sandwich needed no help in keeping my spirits high and mouth not parched. And don't get me started on the flavour! That good girl hit the spot! The sandwich combo comes with a large pickle, coleslaw, and fries. I've got no clue how the combo is served in Montreal, but I loved these simple sides. Those juicy pickles are obviously not grocery store pickles, and the coleslaw deserves a shout out since I would guess they make it in house. Reason for Visit: Overheard an extremely enthusiastic cardiologist preaching about this deli at the ER in a local hospital. Menu: I decided to give this place a try seeing how passionate the cardiologist was telling the staff and patients about how good this place is. Went through the Yelp reviews and immediately saw how reputable this place was. When I arrived, lots of traffic and tables were packed. I immediately got into line and by the time I placed my order, it was probably a good 15-20 mins with another 10 mins or so before my order is made. The reason why there is such a line is because everything is freshly made. They have 2 steamers going on at all times and is already working at maximum capacity. It doesn't help that everyone orders multiple sandwiches to bring back as take out. The smoked meat poutine is super good value and extremely generous with smoked meat. This is a meal in itself. Gravy was smoky and not too salty. Fries were crispy. The smoked meat sandwich was also very generous with the meat. In hindsight, if I knew how good it was, I would had gotten the 1 lb of smoked meat and just bought some bread. A lb of smoked meat can make you ~4 sandwiches. I do note, their combo doesn't come with a drink. Service: What makes this place stand out aside from the top tier food is Sumi and his staff (I believe his wife). Sumi is very passionate and engaging and really speaks to his customers and gets to know them. FYI, Sumi was a top chef at Schwartz for almost 20 years, so the guy knows pretty much all there is to know about smoked meats. Atmosphere: Simple, clean. Don't expect to get a seat during rush hours as this place is PACKED. Overall: Highly highly recommend. This is probably the best smoked meat deli place in Toronto currently. Sumilicious is probably the closest you can get to that experience here in Toronto. It's even owned by a former employee there. There's a decent amount of seating here but I think you're better off getting stuff to go back to the office or wherever you work. The menu is simple but ti works for a place like this. You have the sandwiches, the meat on it's own, the poutine and the sides. Very basic but you're coming here for smoked meat, nothing else. We ordered 2 sandwiches and a poutine. A difference I notice here is that you don't get to select the cut of meat you want for your sandwich. In Montreal, you get to choose between lean, fatty and something in between. There doesn't seem to be that option here. I like my meat a little on the fatty side so I did notice that. They give you a very nice portion of meat for your order here. You could easily make a second sandwich with the amount of meat they give you here. The poutine was amazeballs. Fries smothered in gravy, cheese curds and smoked meat!! You can just have one of those and call it a day. Biggest gripe would be the combo not coming with a drink. You'll have to pay an extra $2 for a can of pop and more for something bottled. I think combos should always come with a drink, my opinion. It's not a combo if I have to get a drink after. Other than that, everything else was excellent about this place. I visited after recognition from Michelin. I got a Large plate, a chicken sandwich, and Smoked meat poutine. Their meat was very soft and surprisingly mild, in a pleasant way. The chicken sandwich was a lot better than I expected. It was something I would not mind getting every day. The poutine was also great, although smaller than I thought. I understand the hype, so I won't discuss the waiting. There were two issues with the restaurant. The men's room was closed, and I had to use the women's room to wash my hands. Also, disposable knives were out of my reach, so the staff had to get one for me. Because they were in a tiny box, they had to grab the knife's edge and hand it to me. You know, Michelin probably mentioned this place for the food. Neither do I visit restaurants for their excellent hygiene. It got me thinking for two seconds before letting myself indulge again.
