Only reason this place gets a two star rating is that the room was quite clean and the girl at the front desk was very nice. Beyond that it was pretty much a disaster. First of all the window closure was broken so it couldn't be closed completely. The window blinds also couldn't be closed so no blocking out the light from the outside. The bathroom faucet had a steady stream that couldn't be stopped. The air conditioner barely worked, was noisy as f@!k, and since it was warm outside the room was like a sauna. And, because our room was right above the restaurant, and the window wouldn't close, it smelled like old grease. As much as I'd like to say this place has potential with some renovations, the location is seriously lacking. Yes, it has a partial view of Mt Baker but beyond that there is little " mountain" in this lodge. It's located in a flat open valley with no trees, lots a pavement, and and only a few businesses, half of which are closed. Seriously, the town of Sumas is pretty sketchy and feels more like it could be the setting of a PNW version of Breaking Bad than a mountain town. Next time we come up here we'll look into Airbnb options in Maple Falls or Glacier, not going to Sumas Mountain Lodge again. read more

We have been coming to Sumas Lodge for 16 years now and the Lodge has yet to disappoint our expectations. Tobin the owner could not have been nicer. His wife was equally as nice and made a great Coffe Nudge! I would and have recommended these accommodations to everyone I know. If they can survive COVID they can survive anything. What a gem. For a little place that is recovering from a flood it was wonderful. The room was more than we had hoped for. It had a beautiful gas fireplace a super comfy bed and an amazing jacuzzi tub. Fits two tall people with room and had enough hot water to full it. ( most the time places like this don't have enough hot water for their tubs.) the keyless entry app didn't work but that was fine. The lady at the desk was so so kind and friendly. We had dinner downstairs at bobs burgers. Half the restaurant is still under construction after the flood but the side they had finish was perfect. The service was top notch. We have found that other bobs food has gone down hill but not this one. The food was great. All around two giant thumbs up!!!!! Also when we have stayed in Bellingham and other places recently they have had homeless camps in the parking lot and we did not feel safe. This cute little town felt very very safe. Had no worries about our kayaks in the truck over night. read more

Stayed here overnight in August 2017. Bathtub is the only thing in the room that works. Otherwise room was not as advertised. There was no flat screen TV, no fridge and not even the coffee maker worked. The "private balcony" was closed for repairs. I wrote two emails to the Lodge afterwards about the fact that I paid $100 for a room that had less than half the advertised amenities and no one ever bothered to even reply. read more

Stayed in the king room with the biggest bathtub ever! Quiet room with lots of space. Nice access to the restaurant. No elevator though so if stairs are a problem, it's a problem. I got a great winter rate and I plan to stay again soon. Update: stayed another night in the smallest room. Bed was still comfy and the tub was perfect. Heater is about as old as me though and sounds like it. Kind if place where you can tell they made an effort when it opened but it's time for a few updates. read more

Just know that the photos look a lot nicer than reality. We recently stayed for one night. Room a bit shabby, with bathroom flooring ripped. But the real issue: One of my kids found an empty beer bottle from the last guest next to the bed, which had us concerned the room wasn't properly cleaned. Mistakes happen, but when we mentioned it downstairs (with evidence), the owner's response was a simple "Our cleaner is usually more thorough than that." No offer to make it right somehow, and no convincing assurance that the room had been cleaned. During COVID, this could be a concern to some. So just know this is a sort of Motel 6 from a pre-Yelp era. read more

We booked a reservation about a month ago for our friends wedding. Upon checking in we paid the full amount for a two day stay here at Sumas Mountain Lodge and our checkout date is tomorrow Sunday the 5th. We had a pretty relaxing morning and knowing we would be staying at the lodge most of the day I put a please do no disturb sign on our door as we are getting ready for a big day. My significant other was using the restroom and I was relaxing on the bed when I heard a knock at the door with some chatter. I ignored it hoping to not be bothered since putting the "do not disturb sign" on our door. I heard another knock so I proceeded to check who was at the door. A lady in a white shirt and a male, what looked like to be a cook was standing outside my door. They told me without any greeting "you needed to be out of this room and you were supposed to leave two hours ago" very hostile like. Just me, answering the door and I'm by myself a woman being confronted by not just one but two workers was intimidating. Which the lady was in no hotel attire at all to begin with which made me feel very uncomfortable. Why was I being confronted by not one employee but two? I told them we had two nights here and we were to check out tomorrow morning and that I could even show them my card to prove I paid two nights. He followed with " you will have to pay $25 extra for not leaving in time". Again, looking at them very confused telling them I paid for two nights and we were here for a TWO night stay. Both looked at other and said we "have someone else who is coming here to stay in this room". Again, I told them I had paid for a two night stay and went back in my room. What kind of service is this? Not only did we pay $160 dollars for a two night stay but supported the restaurant by eating twice, once for dinner and this morning for breakfast. Now spending + $250 We are paying customers and quite frankly never had I had an experience such as this at a hotel/lodge. We have spent several nights there and recommended to our friends as well. This inn is simply charming. The rooms are rustic, yet well appointed with things like coffee makers and small refridgerator. We really like the small balcony for the rooms and the observation lounge at the top of the stairs. There is no handicapped access to our knowledge, so if that is an issue probably shouldn't stay here. (No elevator) Some of the suites have a soaking tub that is deep and big enough for two! ;-) read more

This place is adorable! The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room we had originally booked had a balcony, but when we got here it was closed for remodeling. They upgraded us to another room with a balcony without argument. You do get some noise from the trains and the highway out front, but the rooms are very cozy and having a restaurant downstairs is a great bonus. Be forewarned: if you are disabled, they only have stairs, and they are very "rustic" and uneven. Otherwise, a great place! read more

This place is perfect. It's our anniversary and we throughly enjoyed the atmosphere. Sumas is a small small town so theres not a ton to do but if you come to just relax and sit in the jet tub, it's the kind of place you're looking for. The food at Bob's is just as great and the service is friendly. The servers at Bob's double as the check in for the lodge but don't let that deter you! Worth the drive, worth the stay, worth everything! The bed was comfortable, the room was clean. There is no microwave (for those who find that as a preference) but there's a coffee pot, comfy robes, plenty of channels on the TV. First time I've ever given 5 stars!! read more

Room we were given was much smaller than the advertised / pictured room online. So we cancelled second night. When we confronted front desk w the fact that advertised pictures did not match actual rooms, the answer was "the lower the room number, the bigger the room." Good to know. No refund. No apology. Room heater was broken too. read more

I stayed in the Mt Baker room. Overall the room was a good value for its size but I was very surprised to see the tub & bathroom area in such disrepair. There was obvious water damage around the tub, the linoleum was coming up & there were soft spots in the floor. The tub even had a hole in it. Before booking my stay I emailed with some questions but never got a response. I never saw an "official" Lodge employee, the person at the front desk was also waiting tables at the restaurant. read more

This place was very quaint and rustic and attractive. It seemed lovely and comfortable at first blush. But the internet was difficult to connect to. Even with help from the owner, we couldn't connect. WE finally figured out how to connect. From the moment we got in the room, we heard a continual "ding-ring-ding-ding" sound that seemed like a computer game being played in the next room. We were about to complain but we discovered that it was the door alarm that staff use to enter the kitchen on the floor below our room ... that door alarm went off every time anyone went in or out that door (sometimes every 20 seconds, sometimes every 5-8 minutes), that noise continued from the time we arrived in our room at about 5pm until about 11:20pm. As well, around 6pm, we could hear music, not terribly loud, but we could hear it and it was loud enough to prevent sleep. At 9:45pm I went downstairs and talked with the manager who said the music was from the bar (at the OTHER end of the building from our room!) and the music would be turned off at 10pm because the bar closed then and everyone would leave. The music was shut off at 10pm, but at 10:10 it started again, LOUDER. At 10:15 we could also hear shouting and whooping and cheering downstairs ... no sleep for us. I went downstairs at 10:40pm and was "greeted" by a blond long-haired woman who had a very snotty attitude. She said the manager had gone home at 10pm and that the music was for the kitchen staff and she very reluctantly agreed that it would be turned down "just a little". I said "how about turn it OFF? since we have paid for a room that we can sleep in? and since the manager told us it would be turned OFF. Or I'd be happy to start making phone calls." She sniffed and rolled her eyes and SWORE at me and said it would be turned off. The music was off for about 5 minutes, then turned on again even LOUDER! We decided to wait until 11:30 and then call the emergency numbers listed on hotel documents and the police. At 11:20 however, the music was turned off and noise from voices also stopped. Our room was at the opposite end of the building from the bar, but still the music was intrusive and prevented sleep. The music from the kitchen (from 10pm until 11:20pm was loud, as well as shouting and laughing from the kitchen). And through it all, that "ding-ring-ding-ding" of the door alarm would sound every few minutes or every few seconds. In addition to all of that, they key to our door worked only intermittently. We were locked out a number of times. Eventually a repair man arrived who gave us a different key that worked as long as we were willing to stand in the hall and work the key until the door opened. After 9pm, there is NO entry/exit to/from the building by the front door. Entry/exit is required via the back stairwell which smelled because there was loose garbage around the area. As well, the lock to come back in through that back entry was so loose I could have pried it off by hand, and I did inadvertently pull it out partway simply because the key stuck in that lock ... it was not at all secure. Anyone, with or without a key, had easy access to the interior of the hotel at any hour of the day or night. The bathroom in our room was clean, but the surfaces in the main sleeping room were dusty and the floor had numerous loose threads, dust, and other dry material on it. We will not return and cannot recommend this place. read more
