Ya know, we booked this hotel because it was right in the downtown core of Bellingham and I had my suspicions when we arrived. We arrived Friday night and could not find any parking in the small garage, so we ended up parking in the street. When we told the team member at the front desk this, he gave me other places of where to park and said that street parking would be fine as long as we moved our car by 11am the next day. I didn't feel completely comfortable parking on the street, but fortunately, the car was still there when we woke up. And thus soon after, all my suspicions about Hotel Leo faded away. This hotel was fantastic! Besides the small garage which obviously fills up quickly for hotel guests, we have no complaints. First off, the hotel staff could not be friendlier. Although we did not have the best first impression with the lack of parking, it had nothing to do with the staff or actual lodging. We were warmly welcomed and were told all the important deets of our stay. At the hotel lobby is free Caffe Vita coffee and Smith tea for guests, along with filtered water. Heck yeah! They also have this really good coffee and tea in the hotel room, which was a win because we're a fan of both of these products from the Pacific Northwest! We had a room with a king size bed and it was very large and spacious. When booking, we also specifically looked for a dog-friendly hotel in the area, which Hotel Leo is. So yes, an automatic win. We saw a bunch of doggy guests here, and they have a designated dog relief area with poop bags. We had everything we needed, including AC and WiFi. The location cannot be beat as we were walking distance to everything being in downtown Bellingham, and it made for a great base for when we hiked around the area. I also love the historic building, and they show the old photos of the hotel when it first opened in the lobby. I highly recommend staying at Hotel Leo if you're in need of accommodations in Bellingham. read more

Value: 10/5 Stars. At ~$140 for a room that actually had two complete rooms (bed, 3/4 bath in one full bath in the other, refrigerator, TV, coffee service in one and microwave in the other) in the heart of downtown on a Sat night, this place gets 10 STARS! Service: 5/5 Stars. Granted, we were "low-touch" guests, but everyone was pleasant, prompt, professional, and helpful. The room was perfectly clean and set-up for our stay. The restaurant staff were very nice and accomodating. Quality: 4/5 or 5/5 Stars. I only took off a star because it is a very old hotel and there are limits to what can do without completely tearing down, which would be a massive shame. You could argue for 5 stars for what it is, but I put that love into the value section. They could perhaps do a little more for a more upper-end feel, but then prices would start rising and charm would start to drop. If I ever have a need/desire to stay in Bellingham again, if I'm on a budget or just want to be walking distance from everything in the downtown core, this hotel will definitely be my first thought. We stayed at Hotel Leo on a Monday night and it was peaceful and quiet. The staff were friendly and helpful. Our suite was up a flight of stairs and down a hall that smelled lightly of cigarette smoke. I don't think anyone was smoking, it just seemed like the smell was maybe coming from the older carpet. I noticed this same smell in the brief foyer before the beautiful lobby. Didn't notice it in the library or the community room though. Our suite was super roomy with a separate living room and kitchenette! We found it to be cute, hip, and comfortable. The mugs even came with bags of tasty tea by Smith Co. and coffee by Makeworth Coffee. Super nice touch. Parking was easy and free in the connected garage. The hotel was in a convenient location close to a bunch of downtown shops and restaurants. We walked to Boundary Bay Brewing (we will miss you when you're gone!) for dinner that night and it was a short and pleasant stroll. We both enjoyed our stay and would stay here again! read more

We came here for the jazz brunch and we had the place to ourselves on a Saturday morning around 10:30. Our server was amazing - I wish I had gotten his name. He was so friendly and witty. The jazz was a lovely addition and the hotel itself seemed lovely as well and historic. I got the mushroom toastie and it was okay, wasn't my favorite and I would probably get something else on the menu if I were to come here again. Spent the night while visiting Fire & Story. Booked the Snoqualimie Room. Nice location and walkable. Very large two room area with kitchenette. Only issue is bed is extremely close to the floor (no box spring) and pretty soft. Also due to the space, heater had an issue keeping the room warm that night (maxed it out). I booked a room for my daughter's 21st birthday in Downtown Bellingham. Leading up to the reservation date, I had the Hotel Leo message me to Confirm the reservation and ask if I had any needs or concerns to just let them know. We reserved one of the suites. 3rd floor, with a little kitchenette, stove, fridge, bedroom, and a sofa bed. I had several questions and concerns as I booked the suite and wanted to decorate it for a surprise birthday party. The Leo team was very responsive, accommodating with all my requests ( to get in the room earlier to decorate), did they have a steamer , etc. The whole experience was so easy, and the room was great for an overnight stay for a downtown experience! It was a little loud , as there was another event happening at the hotel until 11pm, and many other patrons in and out. If you have ever had the pleasure of being in Bellingham, an overnight stay at one of the historic places is an experience on its own! (I booked the room through hotels.com. I have to give this place three stars. Pros: I really like the location, the affordability, the walk score, the fact is dog friendly, and has free parking. Cons: The rooms were just a little outdated. Maybe that has to do with the age of the hotel. However, until I see a upgraded room or something it's going to be a three star for me. read more

We felt like we were in the movie Clue (minus the murder)- the billiards, the library, the theater... we loved it all. But it also has modern amenities, like the gym. Let's start with Service Friendly Helpful and Kind. We were on the first floor which is 1.5 flights up no elevator to this floor. They did help us up stairs even though they no longer had a bell hop. The room was very clean. It has a quiet AC unit The interior of the room is modern but no dresser to un pack. Has fridge kettle microwave and bar sink. The bathroom has Citrus soaps and conditioner in the shower. Coffee and tea assortment in room. Warning while bed is comfortable it is very low. Room did have a usb charger. TV and remote and a few chairs. Common areas lobby deck areas and a prohibition bar They even have a phone booth. Morning tea coffee and pastry downstairs. Private parking lot. No screens on windows. This was one of the most disappointing hotel stays I have had in a very long time. Only good thing I can say is it is a a great walkable location.. however I usually stay at the marriot for the points when traveling for work but saw this on a great deal and it seemed boutique-y, very chic, and nice- so I thought why not. I booked online with their 15% off deal with a $25 meal/drink voucher. Upon checking in I inquired about the voucher and I was told since I received the discount I don't get a voucher but he would give me something.. he gave me a $15 voucher. I said great I'll use in the morning (he never through to tell me there was no breakfast the next day, only weekends) but.. Okay that was nice. But you can see from the screen shot that is still wrong, and I do should have received the discount and voucher. Next - if you are staying for longer keep in mind the parking situation. When I got here there was one parking spot left. If you come and the lots full then you need to find street parking that isn't free... it is for some hours but not at all times... not cool. They also do not monitor the parking or ask for your license plate and they don't offer any parking voucher. I had a lot of work stuff in my car ( too much to carry inside) so I was grateful I got a spot in the lot but I was planning to leave to adventure around and get dinner. I opted for different plans to avoid street parking with all the valuables. Okay.. the room wow so if pictures have ever been misleading then this was the case. I have never been more disappointed/ grossed out in my life. First off the AC - this was a massive unit taking up a huge area of the room it is L O U D as all get and because of how old the windows are and poor engineering the window was cracked about 1-3 inches just open... no screen nothing. Anyone could come in and have access to the room. Not to mention ALL THE BUGS!!! Holy hell I spent about 25 minutes killing bugs and just crying while doing so. I shoved towels in the opening to help but I have no idea how they could think this is safe/ okay!? The smell I don't know if someone next to me was cooking something or it was outside or not was the room but the musty old food smell was just something else. It would come and go and was just nauseating. The bathroom had no space I don't know where your supposed to put anything/ face wash a hair brush, tooth paste !? To get ready because there is a sink and a tub and a toilet and that's it. No counter - nothing and the all around cleanliness was about a 4/10 and so disappointing. I wiped toilet paper along the sink and around the bathroom and it was black. At this point I should have switched rooms but I was so tired and had so much work to do I couldn't deal with having another disaster of a room and packing my things. I just wanted to suck it up and get over it. The next disappointment was the sheets. I felt like I was sleeping on sandpaper. I sleep in hotels often and the quality of these sheets were some of the worst I've experienced. Honestly they need to make some seriously upgrades and reevaluate a lot of what they are doing. read more

The historic lobby, bar ( great place to watch a Seahawks game) & crystal ballroom has great character.The staff throughout our stay were kind & attentive. Dinner was tasty (we had gone to the Christmas day Chinese buffet, which was amazing). Our room on the 1st floor had a bedroom, living room & kitchen. It was warm, clean, comfortable, & quiet. Plenty of hot water. Nice touches with, eg. The Meadow tea. Free off the street parking. No cons. We'll be looking with excitement for more of their events. read more

I appreciate the efforts and expense involved in refurbishing this beautiful old hotel. There were some positives: updated bathroom, refrigerator , microwave, towels changed daily. Negatives: No cleaning done aside from making the bed (sort of). Over the course of 4 days, our bathroom floor and sink needed to be cleaned! Coffee mugs and water glasses were left where we last placed them (unwashed) and the mugs from Lobby were never collected. No box spring for mattress so the bed was very low to the floor, which was very awkward. This hotel needs some TLC in regards to cleanliness. read more

Pros: - Staff - very polite and accommodating, - Rooms -Very clean and modern. - Parking - Easy access and free located at the lot next door. - Price - Very low priced rooms Cons: - Noise - Impossible to sleep over the never ending noise (cars, motorcycle traffic, very loud TRAINS and of course the very noise air conditioner - which actually couldn't drown out the noise of the trains) - TV - all Network based shows. Takes forever to scan the never ending options. We were thrilled with this historically preserved hotel and everything was very impressive, but the mood definitely changed once when we tried to get some sleep. read more

Just lovely, especially for an old Bellinghamster visiting home. Everyone that works here is legitimately nice and interesting, the kinda people I'd hangout with. So much charm in this old building, I felt very at home. Also found out my great grandmother was the catering manager here waaaaaayyyyy back in the day, and it's the first place my grandmother worked! This is by far the best hotel in Bellingham! I love the original design with the lion fountain, the statue in the lobby, the old telephone booth, the mailbox shute! Everything was amazing! The room was part modern and part original like the cutest closets on earth and the bathroom tile floor! Lexy upgraded my room to a corner suite on the 7th floor with a view of the bay and downtown! She is the most wonderful employee anyone could ever dream of having!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the beautiful room with the most amazing views of the bay!! I only stayed for one day to help my daughter move, but I wish I was staying for a week! If you ever have the chance stay here! You won't regret it. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful! When I arrived there was warm chocolate chip cookies that were out of this world yummy!! Hot coffee and high quality tea. I brought my dog and they were very welcoming to pets, we ran into a lot of other guests who had dogs too! COVID review: We came here on a weekend road trip from Seattle. Hotel Leo was very clean and the staff were friendly. We were able to stay here with our dog and the parking was included in our stay. The hotel is in a great location and it is very easy to walk around to restaurants and breweries. I liked the design of the room because it was very modern and open. There was a fridge inside of our room where we were able to keep beverages cold. Overall, we had a great time staying at Hotel Leo and felt that it was safe and clean. I plan to stay here on all my future trips to Bellingham. read more

Pictures from website are not accurate! Even for the 'historic' rooms, this hardly qualifies as a hotel. If you do not care about getting sleep, a lock that properly works on the door, simple amenities like a phone in the room to call front desk, coffee ( they advertise French press in the rooms and there isn't even a coffee maker), no bath mats, no hair dryer, no iron/ ironing board, no extra blankets and awful heat- this place is for you. There is a VERY loud train that goes by all night long, the trash trucks started super early, the cheap mini blinds in the room don't block out any of the city light ( no curtains) and the heat doesn't work well. I had to sleep in my winter hat and put my coat over me. There is no art on the walls and it's depressing. After checking in a local told me that it was an old folks home for a while- and the rooms still feel like it. And forget about the room lock working right! I had to mess with the manual lock for a few minutes every time I wanted to get onto the room. Just terrible. The lobby area is really lovely, and the staff is nice. That's the only good I can say! read more

Skip this one if you actually want to sleep. But DO go to the East Indian restaurant NAMASTE which is directly across the street! We chose this hotel because it was near the Mt Baker Theater, which was the venue we came up to visit. Looks great in the lobby, just like the photos. Nice staff. Free parking. The room was clean. That's it. They gave us a card for free cocktail from their bar, which was never open. We could have used one: Asked for a handicap accessible room. Not. The shower was handicap accessible, there were bars beside the toilet. NOTHING else in the rooms was handicap friendly. Or friendly, period. I was glad to see a low bed, because many motels these days have high beds to spare their employees backs, which requires a footstool for me. And then I sat on it. It was so soft that it squished down to about 3". I had to have my husband bring in a chair and footstool from the TV/kitchen room to help me get up. The TV had 2 controllers, and constantly glitched out until we gave up. Which was moot point because not one piece of furniture in that room was comfortable to sit in. All of the furniture looked like it had been in found second hand shops. The kitchen had a microwave on top of a regular size refrigerator. If I hadn't had another person with me, that, as well as the plates and glasses were equally high up and unreachable if one is handicapped! When you walk in, you see a kitchen, and a sitting room with electric heaters spanning the walls. It was early April. It was cold. The heaters were inoperable. The only heat source was in the bedroom. It was one of those small units that can offer heat or AC. We were told that it "took awhile to heat up." We guess that "awhile" as actually NEVER. Not only did it not heat up the bedroom, there was not even a glimmer of hope that it would reach the sitting/kitchen room. We had coats on in there. The only thing that saved us in the bedroom was the electric blanket that we brought along. Provided was a sheet, a very thin duvet, and a thin bedspread. Otherwise, we'd have worn our coats in bed. A CLUE to the rest of the night were the earplugs provided in the bedroom. There is a train track about 2 blocks from the hotel. A very busy train track. Trains are required to whistle the entire length of a town. I even wear silicone, heavy earplugs, but the trains woke me up all night long. My husband can sleep through anything...but the bed gave him a very uncomfortable night. Traffic, although scarce, sounded like it was sharing the room with us. Going back to the bathroom: the sink had a 6"-8" lip around the entire sink. Anyone in a wheelchair could not have accessed it. And the shower, which was the nicest amenity in the entire suite was never used because the kitchen water, turned on hot for an extended time never got past tepid. We didn't opt to try the water temperature in the shower. The ramp to the bathroom only worked if the bathroom door was open. If we'd have left it open, so a person could access it at night, it blocked that already horrible heater. We had a 4 hour drive the next day, with very little sleep. We will never come back. You should skip this hotel. It won't be difficult to find a better place, because the bar on this place is very very low. read more

Not only is this a historical hotel, it is also kept well and located up the street from GRUFF Brewing, Makeworth Coffee, Fiamma Burger, AB Crepes and many other Bellingham staples. I am changing my opinion on Leo after my second stay with less Covid restrictions. It's 50% less creepy! In fact, I will sleep at Leo's every time I'm in Bellingham. I have to stay downtown, within walkable distance of all the fantastic bars and eateries. My dog Roscoe also loves Leo, and he usually only takes to women. The kitchen is indispensable, and I have learned to work with the lack of storage. Leo, you're my favorite relative. read more

I've visited Bellingham a few times over the past few years and stayed at different hotels each time, all wonderful. Something about this place that gets hotels and inns right. Hotel Leo is the latest venture and it did not disappoint. Wow, so impressed with it, it was very clean and super super SUPER friendly staff. It has a lot going on with game rooms, sitting rooms, and an awesome speakeasy-ish bar that literally transports you back into time the minute you step into it. The ambiance is amazing, and Josh the bartender was the cooooolest drink server that you'd want at a place like that. He was awesome, as was the conversation. Great guy. The hotel room was great, with a small kitchen and separate bedroom, with lots of space. Getting to it however was a small challenge, as their elevator doesn't go to the first floor, so you had to drag your suitcases up a flight of stairs to get there. But whatever, not a big deal. I was worried about the parking after a late evening, but there is a lot of space outside in the back if the covered garage is full. The hotel is in a great location with literally at least 3 coffee shops within a block, amongst other great stores and shops. Bellingham is awesome like that. Hola. So far this has been my second event at Hotel Leo where I purchased tickets to support an event and I'm thoroughly disappointed . This is supposed to be disco but I'm seeing more boring jazz for the "masses". Barely R & B and super old folk music. Not to mention this event is "card only" but that was NEVER expressed on any flyer,ad, etc. Literally had to pull teeth for the team to except cash. It's very disappointing and I'll probably be leaving soon. Most likely won't attend any future events here as I've done V.I.P., etc. There's only 2 bathrooms as well!! ‍‍Wish I had something better to say. read more

I had never explored Bham before and this was such a great stay and high on my list of recommendations - I love this spot - located downtown and in the heart of everything it is such a cool spot. We love a good theme so the lions all over was so fun. The vibes are upscale and classy and you feel like VIP all up in there! They let me keep my bags at the desk since I was early and I then went up to the library where there was wifi and worked until they texted me that my room was ready - that was awesome! Loved the room! The view out my window was so pretty especially for late Summer and I love that I could open the window and let in all that nice sea air. The bathroom was cute - the room was cozy - the record player was an awesome touch and the staff was super helpful which I really appreciated. The front desk recommended I check out JUXT for an amazing BLT and you should too! read more

After being home-bound in Portland for five months, we needed a getaway. Bellingham turned out to be perfect, thanks in large part to the Hotel Leo. We have many positive things to say about Hotel Leo. Spacious and comfortably furnished rooms - I want that huge lounge chair! The full-size refrigerator in the well stocked kitchen - definite plus. Beyond our room, the social area "called our name" two nights straight. The gym - biggest yet. Used it twice. Puts the chain hotels to shame. Perfect location too. Short walk around the block to Woods for great coffee and pastry in the morning, lunch at Wild Oats, followed by wood fired pizza at La Fiamma. A few extra short blocks gets you to more coffee and pastries at Caffe Adagio, as well as excellent brews at Alsans Brewing. Good food too! For some bay side seating and reading, Marine Park in Fairhaven is five minutes drive. We'll never be bored with the view. Safety? Over our four nights, mask compliance in the hotel was 100 percent. Around town, nearly everyone masked up, regardless of whether they were walking about on the sidewalks or inside a coffee shop. Never felt uncomfortable or insecure. With citizens like those in Bellingham, we will get through this. We are fond of weekend getaways. Thanks to the Hotel Leo, we hope to be regulars in Bellingham. read more

Rented the Social Room for a 50th birthday. Had many discussions via email with the event coordinator. Food and drinks were booked, but they did not take a deposit. On the day of the event, we were short-staffed ( They told me later they accidentally double-booked events so they took my bartender and we had to go downstairs to order). The custom "birthday drink" was not on hand, and the food we agreed upon was either not brought out or not refreshed at all despite my inquiring multiple times. It turns out that since the Event coordinator did not take the deposit, and didn't communicate with the kitchen- they were silently refusing to make anything, The kitchen and waitstaff also didn't tell me this. I found out by accident when I went to pay at the end of the night and I overheard the staff. It was weird, embarrassing, and the worst event experience I have been a part of. Spent the night in the hotel and woke up to gunshots outside our window in the alley. Cool. They made a very lame and half-hearted attempt to fix the situation by offering to cater and host a future event with a discount. No thanks. read more

This was a decent hotel. The historic building is well kept and has modern furnishings. The staff were friendly enough and helpful. I can not say I like the clash of apartments vs. Hotel rooms in the same building. One of our hallway neighbors were smoking so much cannabis in their room that we could smell it 4 doors down! The room itself was spacious and clean. The bed was comfortable. I'd come back with my wife on a date night, but not with my kids again. They did not appreciate the weed smell. read more

Hotel Leo, as advertised, is "In the Heart of Downtown Bellingham." The location was awesome, in walking distance to tons of eats, drinks, shopping, and activities. The modern renovation of a historic building was really nicely done, although one of the elevators isn't quite finished (see photo). There were some great touches and excellent customer service, but it felt a bit overpriced for the overall experience (ex. no restaurant or spa services on site like other hotels in comparable price range). You're definitely paying for location, which again was excellent. We were happy with the "online special" price but likely wouldn't return to pay the regular price. Hotel Leo and Heliotrope offer a fun benefit program through their app "The B'ham Concierge," which earns you 5% off a future stay when you collect 100 points by visiting recommended local spots. We look forward to trying Heliotrope next time! Hooray! Downtown finally has a boutique hotel, and it's an Instagram Dream: gorgeous historic details, Portuguese-tile lobby, and stylish modern rooms. No more queasy nights on Bill MacDonald parkway for this girl! We booked a grand full kitchen suite and it was more than large enough for 2 people. We peeked into a studio and, while very small, it was cozy and looked like a perfect romantic getaway for a couple that like each other A LOT (winky emoji). The hotel itself is expansive, offering many gathering spots: grand library with pool table, dorm-style social room and a small movie room. There is no hotel restaurant or bar. But hey, you're downtown, you don't need one anyway! read more

I wife and I decided to have a little getaway for this crazy Covid times. We found Hotel Leo was The best hotel with locations to place that we want to visit in Bellingham. The front office/concierge staff (name is Jamie) was warm, friendly and extremely helpful with our booking finding us the best rate with a view of the harbor and Puget Sound! Even with minimal staff here Jamie still made us feel extremely welcome for our "COVID GETAWAY" leaving us a personal note and a token for us choosing to stay with Hotel Leo. There is a full gym (see pics) and a good size theater room which I was told occasionally shows movies on a bigger screen. The hotel is very nostalgic and has a few social rooms and have lots of activities for small and large groups. We will most definitely be coming back and staying here again. This is an old established hotel in the heart of Bellingham Washington. We were happy to be staying there as we thought we would treat ourselves as we were in Bellingham for my sons wedding. It was not as we hoped. My comments are as follows. 1. In our room there was a small closet but with no rack to hang clothes on. Just an empty box in a wall. I hung my dress on a door handle same for my husbands sport jacket. 2. There were no luggage racks so we had to keep our suitcases on the floor. (The empty closet would have been a perfect place for at least one luggage rack.) This keeping luggage on the floor gets very tiresome especially for people mid 70's. (Ouch. My back!). 3. The outlet mounted within the lamp stand for electronic charging did not work and this was the only provision for charging devices in the room. . There were no other outlets in the room available. There was an outlet in the bathroom above the vanity for use of shavers, etc but we think it unsafe to keep electronic devices IN the wash basin as there no ledge around the basin to place a device. So we got up in the middle of the night to rotate 2 phones and a tablet. . 4. We have a Porsche which was a major purchase for us as is a car to most everyone. So when the hotel says parking included , that was comforting. However, when we returned home from the wedding at 10:00p , there were no spaces. . The only spaces remaining were specifically marked for other businesses that specifically said we would be towed if we parked in them. That was not going to happen to our car. 5. One of Our key cards was programmed incorrectly so when I had forgotten sunglasses and went back to the room to get them , I had to stop and get another key card at the front desk. It was just another inconvenience (and waste of time) and they were adding up 6. No hair dryer. Hotel 6 has hairdryers. 7. Most important, only one mirror in room, over the sink in the bathroom. No place for me to do makeup and hair while my husband was doing other things in there. No mirror to check out how we looked leaving for a very nice event we wanted to look great for...our son's wedding.! But even if you are going to a 5k run, shouldn't everyone be able to see themselves in a mirror and a full length one is pretty much standard. (I include a pic of the only mirror in our room.). We had to each tell each other what the other looked like. I told LEXIE the assistant manager upon check out all these points and she said she would happy to give us a discount if we were ever back there again. ( We told her we would never be back as the wedding was a destination one and we would never have reason to go there again. Bellingham was the location of the brides brother and the family we have in Washington. Is all in Seattle.). She gave us each a 12 ounce bottle of water and sent us on our way. Oh wait, she did say I would see s $50.00 discount on that bill which was a $421 plus tax room. And I believe she thought she was bring very generous. So You judge. read more
