10 out of 10. I originally was in WA for business but that ended and then I drove up to Bellingham to meet friends driving from Canada. I'm a nature girl so I wanted somewhere to stay where society is still heavily planted but so were birds, trees, nature. THIS PLACE. it actually came up as a deal on Booking.com and it was the last room. I'm so glad I did. It obv has a motel format but the owner for sure had it modernized so that it has modern hotel feels and thought of all the details- what you will see, what you'll smell, feel, everything. When you walk into your room, it immediately relaxes you with the fresh smells you intake, how clean and fresh everything is, the linens are fresh. The soaps and shampoos smell of lavender and everything fresh. The shower is all modern. The lobby and rooms are all really modern but very warm in color schemes. Lots of pillows. I loved waking up in the morning and having my coffee out in the communal outdoor seating area and soaking up the sun and hearing the birds. It was so peaceful. The neighborhood surrounding is so cute and I loved taking walks all around the area to explore. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Only suggestion is to put a microwave in each room. There is a mini fridge and I hate microwaves myself, I don't use them in everyday life and I do did not need one for this time but had I stayed here for a week or if I brought family, I would definitely not want to have to eat out everyday or just eat cold foods all week straight from the fridge. I didn't see a microwave in lobby, they may have had that but even still that is super inconvenient to go to the lobby to heat something up. So I suggest that strongly as I saw others complain about that. -That and for the lobby coffee, maybe have flavored creamer out as well. Great coffee and I improvised with adding a scoop of cocoa mix but just suggestion. Other than the 2 things above, serious 10 out of 10 and I will absolutely stay here again

Chalkboard door....we kept notes on feedback for the staff.

Cute place, great concept. We appreciate the work that has gone on to restore and update this place. Taking an older hotel and making it hip again; thank you for doing it! We loved the idea of the chalkboard door....gave us an opportunity to keep notes and provide feedback to the staff. Pic attached. I'm only giving 3 stars because I'm setting the bar high due the price we paid....room could've been cleaner and better maintained (stain on carpet was disappointing). But, I'm very glad this option is out there. We would go back if in the area again....keep improving it!

Love the chalkboard door in the rooms!

Nice location in a residential area. Clean, comfortable and very reasonably priced. Nice touches like good coffee in the reception area.

Great spot for mountain bikers. Big rooms with plenty of space for bikes and also a short walk to downtown Bellingham. Highly recommend!

They allow dogs. There is a dog run just for them. Be sure to scoop. The room was clean. The bed is comfortable. Nice retro motel room.

Ya know, we booked this hotel because it was right in the downtown core of Bellingham and I had my…read moresuspicions when we arrived. We arrived Friday night and could not find any parking in the small garage, so we ended up parking in the street. When we told the team member at the front desk this, he gave me other places of where to park and said that street parking would be fine as long as we moved our car by 11am the next day. I didn't feel completely comfortable parking on the street, but fortunately, the car was still there when we woke up. And thus soon after, all my suspicions about Hotel Leo faded away. This hotel was fantastic! Besides the small garage which obviously fills up quickly for hotel guests, we have no complaints. First off, the hotel staff could not be friendlier. Although we did not have the best first impression with the lack of parking, it had nothing to do with the staff or actual lodging. We were warmly welcomed and were told all the important deets of our stay. At the hotel lobby is free Caffe Vita coffee and Smith tea for guests, along with filtered water. Heck yeah! They also have this really good coffee and tea in the hotel room, which was a win because we're a fan of both of these products from the Pacific Northwest! We had a room with a king size bed and it was very large and spacious. When booking, we also specifically looked for a dog-friendly hotel in the area, which Hotel Leo is. So yes, an automatic win. We saw a bunch of doggy guests here, and they have a designated dog relief area with poop bags. We had everything we needed, including AC and WiFi. The location cannot be beat as we were walking distance to everything being in downtown Bellingham, and it made for a great base for when we hiked around the area. I also love the historic building, and they show the old photos of the hotel when it first opened in the lobby. I highly recommend staying at Hotel Leo if you're in need of accommodations in Bellingham.

The beautiful library, social hall, and other amenities are outstanding, albeit in the library it was a bit cold when we stayed there in late September 2026. However, if you are planning to sleep in a suite in this hotel - beware. The beds are low, the mattresses are soft - as in two people sleeping together will roll into the middle of the mattress, there are no box springs, and if you have any hip/knee/mobility issues or are simply past a certain age - this is not a hotel for you.

We had room #111, which is the closest room on the second floor to the main (lobby) building. I thought road noise might be a problem, but it wasn't really noticeable. In fact, there were only two things I didn't like about the room. There are no microwaves in the rooms. But there is a small one in the hallway on each building's floor, shared by all. Not as convenient (we use it a lot for tea, coffee, etc.), but good enough. More annoying was the amount of light coming in from the windows. There are bright security lights on all night (that's good), but the curtains were not designed to cope with that light. Therefore, the room remains pretty bright all night. That I really didn't like. You can look at my photos for an idea of what the breakfast buffet included (e.g., 2 kinds of bread, 2 fruits, 4 dry cereals, coffee, etc.) Nothing remarkable, but I have definitely experienced worse. Overall, it was a comfortable, clean, and relatively quiet room, at an exceptionally good price. Service was always very friendly and helpful. And the location is centrally located, near the I-5 freeway, near downtown, and pretty close to Boulevard Park, Zuanich Point Park, and Whatcom Falls Park. If I return to Bellingham, this would definitely be my first choice of lodging.
