No.3 Fresh from the sea

This place might be like top 3 for me right now in Chelsea. It's a super intimate and slim-shaped restaurant, kind of like that Brandy Melville in Paris with the teeny door. I got the $28 kaisendon and the addition of dashi once you've finished half the bowl is so magical. It's like two meals for the price of one. The fish was super fresh and the sauce they used on the rice was so good. The dashi was so umami, and a little salty so it paired well with the rice and remaining fish. The hamachi on the side was super yummy too! Also the staff here is so sweet! They offered my friend an extra serving of rice and dashi once he finished his meal.

So delicious!

I'm constantly in search of food that reminds me of my trip to Japan (Tsujihan still makes my mouth water), and Suki Desu checks one of those boxes. Their menu is pretty simple: they have three separate kaisendon / rice bowls with different topping options, and they're all delicious and reasonably priced for New York. The fish is really fresh and delicious, and the sauce is yummy, though I do feel like they could've had a little bit more. Once you've finished greater than 75% of your bowl, you can ask to add dashi to your bowl, which somewhat cooks the raw fish it makes it for a delicious brothy experience. The restaurant itself is pretty small, with counter seating only, but it was perfect for a spontaneous weeknight dinner with a friend. I believe that they only do walk-ins, but we had no wait around 6 PM on Monday.

Was recommended this spot by friends and it did not disappoint! I got their biggest bowl which was $28 and worth it when you compare it to the prices you'd typically encounter in the city. They ran out of uni at that time, but offered extra of whichever topping of my choice. The fish itself tasted fresh and paired with the rice was just the perfect bite. The rice was nicely seasoned and they add on soup at the end which I thought made it a really fun and unique experience. It certainly fills you up!

I was really missing the kaisendon I had at tsujihan in Japan, and it's a crime how there are only like 2 places in NYC that have this available. We came here right for reopening time at 4pm on a Thursday and it was empty. The employees actually didn't arrive until a few minutes after, so we kind of panicked because of how much we had to pay for parking. It is a very small space, just counters, and they are pretty quick with your food after you order. We got the mixed tartare with the wasabi chips, which was tasty. My husband liked it so much he ordered an extra of this. We wanted to get the most expensive bowl option with uni, but they were sadly out, so we opted for the next tier down. The fish was fresh, and I liked that there were small pieces of squid for the texture. It comes with two huge slabs of fresh yellowtail with a nice sesame sauce. After you finish half your bowl, you can put it on the counter and they pour in some warm broth. I think this experience is comparable to Tsujihan in Japan, but the broth was not quite as hearty and comforting as the sea bream broth used in Japan. The pricing here was shockingly reasonable, especially for NYC--only $28 for the priciest kaisendon option. The service is quiet but quite attentive, and the ambience is okay, chairs are not that comfortable and the bathroom was so tiny and cramped and kind of gross. I get that restaurants in nyc have limited space sometimes, but I chose to hold it even with an hour drive home, and I think that says something. I would still visit this place every week if it was close to me.

If you're looking for a cozy spot to warm up this winter, I highly recommend checking out Suki Desu's new Chelsea location. The space feels intimate and perfect for cold days when you just want something comforting and delicious. We started with a bottle of Yuzu Omoi, which was lightly sweet and paired nicely with everything we ordered. For appetizers, the unagi tamago completely surprised me it's not something I usually go for, but this version was so well balanced and flavorful. The tuna tartare came with wasabi nori chips that had the perfect kick, and the tuna carpaccio with botan ebi, scallop, and salmon roe was incredibly fresh and generously portioned. For mains, we ordered the unadon and the kaisendon. I got the kaisendon with fresh salmon, sweet shrimp, ikura, and hamachi in a rich sesame oil sauce. They had run out of uni, but added extra ikura instead. The set came with hamachi that was buttery and coated in a nutty sesame dressing which was delicious. Halfway through, they pour in hot dashi, transforming it into a cozy comforting winter bowl. Really recommend this spot for your next night out!

Can't beat this lunch deal!! Walk-ins accepted - went on a Saturday around 1:30 and was seated immediately. They were super attentive, filling our tea and water very frequently. Counter seating - very simply decorated. Fish was fresh and flavors were delicious.

I had always wanted to try Suki Desu, but their UES location was always too busy.... but now they've also opened a spot in Chelsea! I went on a rainy day, and this was the perfect meal! The waitstaff was nice and attentive, and the food came out quickly. It's a perfect spot for solo diners! Suki Desu has a streamlined menu that focuses on what they do best: seafood. I got their $28 kaisendon, and it was super tasty! They pile on a ton of fresh fish and seafood, and encourage you to try it without soy sauce first. Once you're halfway through your meal, or mainly have rice left, you can also ask them to put in a savoury broth into your dish, similar to an ochazuke, which gives your meal a nice, comforting finish. Only thing I'd recommend, is getting one of the cheaper bowls. The main different between the most expensive one is the uni, which came out pretty small, and wasn't that worth it in my opinion. The bowl itself is solid though, and a good price! All in all, you should definitely try this spot before others catch on. I'm sure once people hear more about this second location, it'll be harder to get a seat and enjoy their kaisendon!

I was really looking forward to trying Suki Desu! I've had the viral Tsujihan in Japan before and this looked similar so I was excited to try it. The service was nice and attentive, but I thought the food was just ok. The fish didn't taste super fresh in my opinion, and I thought the broth at the end was too salty

Midway through, we requested for Dashi broth to be added to our bowl (at no extra price) for a homey finish, MMM.

I am a sucker for delicious Katsu and you'll struggle to find better than Katsu-Hama. Katsu-Hama…read morehas a quaint, Japanese vibe in a small but comfortable dining area. It's not especially big, so you may have a bit of a wait if you frequent right at lunch or in the evening but whatever amount of time you have to wait it will be well worth it. Service is top tier but you come for the food. They have a varied menu with a lot of options so if you're bringing a buddy that isn't up for Katsu, they'll have plenty to choose from. The Katsu is the star and I think what sets this place apart is that they offer Berkshire pork katsu as an option. Arguably some of the best pork, it's great to have the option if you're looking to heighten the experience. I love their pork katsu and go nuts over the chicken katsu curry. It's super crispy, slightly greasy but never off-putting. And it's served with the most delicate and delicious cabbage slaw. I could eat a mountain of this it's so good. Highly recommended.

This place is a bit hard to spot, but it's on the same side of the street as the sorta famous (50…read moreyears +) Phil's Stationery. Katsu-Hama is about two doors to the Left of Phil's, and has minimal, very discreet signage. I got some tonkatsu...I forget the exact type, but it was essentially the most fatty of the tonkatsu offered. It came with cabbage (with a sesame ginger type dressing), daikon radish (with some type of sauce on top), and the standard sauce for the tonkatsu, along with some crushed sesame seed and hot mustard. I'd have to say...the tonkatsu was quite good....not quite as sublime as my favorite tonkatsu place in Tokyo...but still, very, very good. The dish also came with a bowl of miso soup (good, and not overly salty) and a bowl of white rice, which I considered the most disappointing part of the meal. The rice seemed a bit dried out...not moist.... All in all, an excellent meal. I'd definitely come back.

Called beforehand on a Friday night for two and seats were ready when we arrived at 8:30pm. Upon…read moreentering, it felt like I teleported to Japan. Many of the clientele are Japanese so we knew we were at an authentic place. We got: - Fried oysters: the batter was light and crispy and oysters piping hot - Vinegared Mackerel w/ Ponzu Sauce: fresh & tangy - Intestines Hotpot: comforting & light despite the fattiness of the intestines - Creamed Mentai Udon: they split it in 2 small bowls for us since we were sharing. Udon had a nice bouncy chew and sauce was not heavy We also got a bottle of sake, and they poured it in a beautiful sake decanter to keep it cold. First time seeing cold sake presented this way which was very cool. We tried Suntory draft beer since that was the only draft they had, which was odd since most Japanese places carry Asahi/Sapporo, definitely not as light as the other two beers I'm used to. Even though I was stuffed by the end, I didn't feel lethargic, everything felt light without compromising flavor. Service was attentive although our udon came at the very end, we thought they had forgot about it.

There are a few restaurants in NYC that make you feel like you are stepping into a Japan portal,…read moreand Okatte Tanto is no doubt one of those. As you step into the restaurant, you immediately feel a sense of formality and strictness. It's also very quiet in the restaurant, and friendly to solo diners, adding on more to the Japan-esque feel. The food is high quality here, but the portions are small, and it is pricey. I would budget to spend around $100 a person here after tip and tax, if you ignore the prices on the menu and try a variety of things. The tuna from the bone is the most famous dish here, but I was not able to get it as they sell out very fast. But I tried the sashimi and it was high quality -- just that it was not enough food for me. But that makes it more in line with portions back in Japan. They have an extensive sake list and they also have the casual cocktail options like lemon drops you would find in Tokyo. The atmosphere really transports you straight into Japan if that is something you are looking for. Expect to pay a premium for small-ish portions, but at the same time very well-made and authentic food.
