This place isn't readily noticeable from the road, as it is in a shopping center designed to look like it fits with the cookie-cutter condo complex directly behind it. You would be surprised with how dull the shopping center looks from the outside, that Sukhothai would have such a cool atmosphere INside. It's a cozy little place with large scenic photo prints on the walls, and a wooden lattice-like ceiling with paper lanterns and stuff hanging from it (at least that is how it looks in my mind at the moment). This place is BYOB, but it's the kind of BYOB where the wait staff really attends to your brought beverage. They immediately bring out an ice bucket for you for bottle storage, as well as glasses. They even open the wine/drink for you and begin pouring glasses. Yeah, this is the way it should be, but I have been to plenty of places where it hasn't. I really love the food that I have had here. I mean, really really. I would give this place 5 stars, but it is still quite new to me, and I have only sampled a few menu items. But the menu items I've had... EXCELLENT. The big feature for me is the soups they serve. They are mainly curried fresh vegetable soups to which you can add different meats if you like (chicken, beef, shrimp, etc), and you can choose the level of "heat" or spiciness. The heat level is a scale of 1-10. I LOVE spicy foods, so I usually go for at least an 8 or 9, which is enough to get me a bit runny-nosed and teary-eyed by the end of the meal, but not overly heated. The next time I'll just have to go all out and try level 10. Anyway, the soups are what I keep going back for. They are so flavorful and fresh, and the blend of Thai seasonings really compliments the flavor nicely. I will be returning many times to try more of the menu, but TRY THE SOUPS! read more

Food was good. Waitstaff courteous. Nice layout and very personal for tables. Came here after Mean Cup with my mom and we split the curry and veggies and rice. Was hoping it would be hotter, but it had spice. I'm sad that most Thai places have American-ized their spice levels, because when I say hot, I mean Thai hot. Not American-I get offended because the jalapeños have seeds in them I'm gonna sue you because I have a weak constitution-hot. One autumn just after Yom Kippur, I swear I heard someone at Prince Street asking how to get to Sukkot High. Sukhothai is a Thai restaurant. To my knowledge, they are not kosher and have no tables al fresco. They do, however, make a mean mango smoothie, and the coconut soup comes with lots of nice fresh mushrooms and green peppers. You can BYO Manischewitz. I am not Jewish, so I like ordering the spicy pork sausages which come with an excellent sweet-hot dipping sauce. My other improvised order is sticky rice with a little bowl of green curry. Just like you would do with ugali, mielie-meal and the like, pull a bit of the rice out of the basket with your (right) hand, mush it into a ball and dip it in the sauce. Sorry to say that we were really disappointed in the food here. I noticed that another reviewer commented that Sukohthai's food lacked the "complex flavors of good thai" and I'd say that I agree with that assessment. I could tell that the restaurant used high-quality ingredients to prepare our food, but it largely lacked flavor. The papaya salad, for example, didn't have that balance of salty/sour/umami that I'm used to. The best dish was a panang curry, but even it could have used more punch. We ordered takeout and were told that it would be ready in 30 minutes; it took almost 50 minutes. The staff and owners here are really nice. I hope that they can work out some of these kinks, hire a new chef, and turn things around. read more

Ok I'm demanding having lived in SEAsia for 7 years and had great restaurant exposure to Asian cuisine in years in NYC, Paris and Phila. This is my go to Asia place in Lancaster. Fab Thai iced tea. They do this cute curly thing with straws which I was easily amused by. My Pad Thai was decent. Medium sized portions. I stayed at the Lancaster Arts Hotel and this was a conveniently close change of pace for me and my special guest. If you're out of town and looking for a nice, little Thai spot, this place will do the trick. Also, this restaurant is GORGEOUS inside. Here's the problem, we love their food, but it is such a pain to get it. Go there and it takes forever. Call ahead and it takes forever even when you show up 30 minutes after you call. Two times so far I called an order in, paid them, sat, waited... they brought the food out and set it behind the counter, a staff member tells the person at the front they brought it out, and they twiddle their thumbs until I have to ask if it is my food. They need to be more on top of things. They seem to be getting too big for their location and are going to lose a lot of customers if they lose focus. Back to the food... our bread and butter there is: 1. Fresh rolls 2. Hot and Sour soup 3. Oh, Sukhothai... How you do me so right and yet so wrong at the same time. Yes, the food is unequivocally delicious. The coconut rice alone is worth the trip. But, the prices! Vegetable noodle dishes or curries are $13! And the vegan surcharge!! If you want to add tofu to your meal: $1.50 extra. For TOFU. Even at lunch, when I choose to have no meat (which is included in the price) they STILL will charge $1.50 extra for the tofu. Not fair. The new space on Harrisburg is beautiful, yes, but I would rather have the old strip- mall space and not have to pay so much for vegetables and rice! read more

I've been to Sukhothai twice; once for lunch, where I got chicken Pad Thai, and once for dinner, where I got chicken Panang Curry. FOOD: The food here is fairly good and reasonably priced. I got Pad Thai during their lunch special for $8.95. I wasn't impressed; it was fairly dry. I ordered mango sticky rice for dessert--DIVINE. This is one of my favorites desserts, period, and Sukhothai does a damn good one. For dinner a few weeks ago, I got chicken Panang Curry. The curry sauce was yummy, the chicken was cooked tenderly, I just felt I didn't have enough sauce. It could have been due to the fact that the curry is served in a fairly shallow plate instead of a bowl. It was spicy, which I like and expect from Thai curries, and had a good balance of coconut milk to make the sauce creamy. SERVICE: The service was poor, but in their defense, it was an extremely busy night for them. We waited for a while before anyone even acknowledged us asking how many were in our party. The waiter checked on us just once and didn't even come around to ask if we wanted dessert. It was also incredibly loud, due to all the customers present, but I did not have that experience during my lunch there, so I don't think it's a generally loud restaurant. I had a lot of hope for Sukhothai but I was disappointed. The dishes we ordered didn't taste like Thai food at all. It tasted like bland, watered-down pan-Asian food. Missing were the complex flavors and spices that I experienced in Bangkok recently. If that is too far-fetched, then I have also lived in New York and DC and spent a lot of time in California, so I am used to traditional and authentic Thai food. In comparison Sukothai completely missed the mark. I had the green papaya salad, Pad Thai and the drunken noodle. I don't think I have ever tasted Pad Thai like this. It was not inspiring or flavorful. Where were the bean sprouts? The peanuts? The spring onions? The papaya salad did not have the crunch-bite with its limpy veggies and it tasted like almost like shredded squash with fish sauce. There were no expected sweet and sours in the salad. Then lastly, the drunken noodle tasted like a Chinese food duck sauce packet was mixed in with a bit of hot sauce on top of overcooked egg noodles. I was very surprised at the low flavor profile. What's worse are the prices they charge for Thai food in general. $15 for a small plate of shrimp pad thai? Even in Philly it's barely $8 for a generous plate. And it's BYOB too? Thai cuisine culture is not made with expensive ingredients and if you are not serving booze, what gives? I am assuming for the plain Central PA taste buds, this place may be acceptable, but I pity them. They are missing out the explosive and seductive tastes of Thai food. If you know your Thai food, then it's disappointing. Sadly Sukothai dropped the ball. They could have been a champion at expanding the local palate. The decor is attractive but the food is quite disappointing. There is a uniform flavor that seems to recur in most of the hot dishes, and it isn't lime, lemongrass or chili. The curries are acceptable but they taste pretty much out of the can Mae Sri formula from the Asian Emporium grocery. The salads are where the disappointment is exquisite. Lifeless, limp messes on the plate without any of the distinctive combinations of flavors which are the hallmark of Thai food. Service we found to be pretty good, though we hid our disappointment from the staff. Bottom line: pleasant place to take a date especially if all you know about Thai food is Pad Thai. read more

If you are looking for delicious Thai food and a quieter night out, this is your place! Sukhothai is BYOB, which makes the prices affordable! The service does take time which can be a good and bad thing! Definitely gives time to catch up and enjoy your meal, but does create a wait time when wanting the check. I recommend the Battered Vegetables for an appetizer! The vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and more! The veggies are light fried and served with their sweet and sour peanut sauce, which is delicious! The Crab Wontons are good. I prefer more cream cheese normally, but the crab is tasty and the wontons are crispy! For an entree I ordered the Pad Si Ew with shrimp. The noodles were perfectly cooked and the sauce is so great. There's not too much sauce on the meal, but just enough to compliment the dish. The veggies aren't cooked to death and have a healthy crunch. Pro: Pleasing enough ambiance. Cons: Their version of Pad Thai was a disgusting slimy mess. Needless to say, it was not like other versions in reputable restaurants. Plus the portion was small and grossly over priced! And to add insult to injury even their Thai ice tea was a serious disappointment. It had a strange and unpleasant taste. To start, I came here solo for lunch before work and despite there only being 2 other couples dining, it took almost 10 minutes to be sat. Normally I would have left long before then, but I decided to stick it out side I have been craving Thai food. For the lunch special, I started with the crab wontons, which were practically tasteless. Fortunately, the peanut sauce was decent and made up for the bland wontons. I went with the pad thai with tofu for my entree, which was a pleasant surprise after the lackluster appetizer. That being said, it still wasn't amazing. It was just an average, adequate noodle dish. It definitely lacked flavor, but it was still tolerable. Throughout my meal, I was not checked up on once and my empty drink glass sat at the edge of my table the entire time. All in all, Sukhothai definitely needs to brush up on their customer service and has very bland food. It wasn't HORRIBLE but I still would not return. read more
