First of all, this is the absolute nicest yoga studio I've ever been to, and I'm honestly surprised it's in Modesto. I was visiting my family for a couple weeks in the Mo and tried it out. The studio is absolutely gorgeous. However, I love to come a few minutes early and enjoy the heat and the quiet. On my first class the instructor was late to arrive and class started a few minutes late, giving the class a rushed vibe with no time to lay in the mat and enjoy the stillness. The next class I attended I was serenely laying on my mat for no more than a minute when two ladies started gabbing. I was SHOCKED. I've done hot yoga in Washington state (where I live), other cities in California, Montana, Wyoming, and Arizona and talking inside the hot room has always been a no no. I found it totally rude that it wasn't decorum to practice silence. Other than that, I enjoyed my classes. read more

While visiting family, we were in Modesto and looking for a Yoga studio. This studio is beautifully designed and centrally located (in the same shopping center where Sprouts is). Once I walked in I did a double take and had to say "THIS beautiful studio is in ..wait.. Modesto?" I loved the inverted rope wall yoga! The classes I went to had a lot of beginners so I didn't feel too much pressure to go too crazy here. One tip I would suggest: Get rid of your boutique and turn it into a lounge. I felt myself wanting to have a tea and lounge around a bit after my class. Who really wants to go sit in a car when they're done with yoga. A nice walk would be another good idea but I was in a parking lot. read more

I wanted to challenge my body with something new. I've always wanted to be more flexible and to strengthen my body with low impact. Two weeks ago i decided to try out one class of bikram yoga. One spontaneous class turned into unlimited classes bc I fell in love with the mind & body connection. Seeing all of the ladies move like pretzels not only motivated me but I am so glad I have added this to my daily routine. There are so many health benefits and the peace and tranquillity yet also feeling of being energized after class was exactly the void that I needed to fill. I'm already seeing improvements and I know in time I will get better! I look forward to each class and find that the instructors have been extremely helpful. Life can be so fast paced, demanding, and we are constantly on the go, I would highly recommend devoting 60-75 mins of your time for yourself to separate from the real world while toning the body and relaxing the mind. I have been to studios in LA, NYC, SF - I have to say - Sukha is on par with any big city studio I've been too in both environment, and caliber of classes and instruction! I have been to most of the different class offerings; and each class has left me refreshed and challenged! The interior design could not be better! Im sweatier than a jungle soldier after a Saturday hot yoga session! -Class is intense, covering everything from upper body, cardio and balance exercises. -When it says hot yoga, they mean upper 90s! Make sure you bring or are willing to rent a towel and have water.in hand too. -Good unpretentious vibe and a range of ages and body types. -They fixed the light sitch mentioned in the previous review, now they have dimmers and recessed lighting. -We were lucky to get in with a reservation, they were too booked to accomodate walk ins. -A fantastic addition to Modesto, ill definitely be back to support this studio! read more

There is a lot to like about Sukha. They have top notch instructors (I actually came to one class specifically for Kaycie - she's the best!). I have only tried a few yoga classes here, and it's not my main studio, but I do love the variety of classes and plan to try more. I have tried the ropes wall here and this class was excellent. Please be advised that it is challenging. I was told going into it it's all levels, but I'm not sure about that. I believe it can be modified for all levels, but what we did was a bit advanced. However, there were only two of us in the class that night and I know the instructor based the class on our fitness level. I'm sure you will be given what's right for you when you go in. I was quiet scared to try a few things but he was very encouraging and very nice. I felt supported and safe even though I was nervous. At the end, I felt very rewarded and proud. The ropes wall is a unique feature of this studio and worth trying. The thing that really keeps me from rating this studio higher is the price. $19/class is a bit pricey for yoga, and it's higher than the other studios around. I was also surprised this price doesn't include a mat. In fact, it doesn't include anything. Matt rentals are $2 and I forgot what lockers and towels are (I think $1 each). This could really add up quickly. There's also no real price break given. If you buy classes in bulk you only save a few dollars. Other studios generally offer a significant discount for buying 10 or more classes. All in all, my review is that this is a beautiful and professional studio. It won't be for everyone but it's worth going for a visit and seeing for yourself. Also, it has showers, which is great for after hot yoga. read more

I'm a long time yoga practitioner, and relatively new to the area. My wife and I are looking around for a yoga home. This week we tried out Sukha. I'd like to give this place two ratings: 5 stars as a fitness center, 3 stars as a yoga studio. So I'm splitting the difference. Sukha is really more of a sophisticated fitness center that provides Barre, Pilates, and ... incidentally - since it fits into the space available, Yoga. First, the environment of the yoga/barre studio is reasonably quiet, has high end finishes, and the amenities (bolsters, blankets, blocks) are all color coordinated and of good quality. The staff that I met were very pleasant and helpful. The yoga instructor for the Restorative Yoga Class (Mario) was outstanding - articulate, attuned to the needs of the students, with a wonderful mellow voice and grounded demeanor. However, and this is only a distinction for individuals who are more interested in yoga as a spiritual practice than as a part of a fitness regime, it's definitely a business. I looked online for classes and the separate site that had the schedule suggested you book yourself into the class in advance. Okay. That's unusual. I paid $20 for a spot in the class, then had to go through the booking process again to add my wife. Another $20 but no way to add her name. No worries, it's just a yoga class. Now I personally think $20 is high for a drop in class. Not unthinkable. I donated that much last week at Elevate for each of us. But $20 would be pretty pricey for a drop in class in Los Angeles where some yoga instructors are considered minor gods - just to put it into perspective. Then the emails (I had agreed to a reminder) started rolling in. There was the one welcoming me for registering. There was the one telling me about their cancellation policies and the various fees depending on when you actually cancelled your reservation for the class. $20 for this. $10 for that. $10 for this amount of time if you used your yoga pass. Well... ummm. Okay. Then there was the reminder for the class. *sigh* The cancellation policy felt heavy-handed and unwelcoming. I know they might argue that people are more inclined to attend a much-needed class if they'll forfeit some green for not attending... but having to sign up for a class in advance is not necessary when they class isn't routinely full. Was it? No. Is it usually? No idea. I've attended classes that were mat to mat... and we didn't reserve ahead and we made it work. Yoga is about being attuned to yourself, your body and your needs - in the moment. None of this sat well with me. Then we came in for the class. I look over to the right of the registration desk toward the gift / merchandise shop and amongst all the hipster, cool, and rather pricey fitness/yoga stuff is a rack of clothing. The tee shirt facing me on the end reads BRANDY. WHISKEY. VODKA. (I may have gotten the alcohol wrong, but let's just say adult beverages. ) I look around... yep I'm in a fitness studio with a yoga class just starting up. This has got to be a first and I've seen some serious yoga merch in my day. The gift shop at Kripalu? Insane... but VV new age and wellness oriented. That tee shirt? Funny and hip and interesting somewhere downtown. Yes. Here, no. Curate appropriately to the lifestyle you are supposed to be encouraging with your primary business, that's all I'm suggesting. I look at the sign behind the desk and they offer to rent me a mat for $2. Hmmm. It's pretty traditional for a yoga studio to offer people who have come from out of town or forgotten their mat, a free loaner. Fortunately I have my own. I get it. This stuff costs money, and they're working to recoup their investment. Fortunately the interior designer for Sukha did an outstanding job on both the pilates studio (we peeked inside) and the yoga/barre studio. It's all dim lighting, dark woods, and spacious, well-ventilated niiiiiice as far as the eye can see. Good job. As I said, Mario is exceptional. His class actually helped my back and hips relax and I left feeling like I'd just had a massage. I may still be back just for his mellow voice, calm demeanor, and a pace that is designed for people recovering from injuries or suffering other joint and muscle problems. So definitely give Sukha a try. It's a chill space, the equipment is top notch and the gift shop is full of cool stuff to buy if you have the benjamins. read more

I agree with one of the reviews that said some of the atmospheres in the classes are kind of ego-driven. This place is beautiful and I've tried just a couple yoga and hot yoga classes and the hot yoga was honestly at a pretty high level for me. When I took my first class there I kinda just snuck in and laid my mat in the back because I didn't want to be in anyone's way and the instructor came up to me immediately to ask if I was new to yoga because usually you want to be closer to the mirror to see yourself.. now any normal person would not be bothered because she was just trying to help but I already had anxiety about going there and then I felt a little singled out and nervous after that. I'm not necessarily new to yoga and the class was very fast. Even the instructor was kind of running through the names of poses and not really letting us strengthen in the pose. There wasn't a lot of mind body connection and at first I felt very pressured to try to keep up. I did come back because I did the 2 week summer deal and the other classes were better, I really liked Sharron. Overall this studio is gorgeous, definitely not affordable though, like yikes pricy. If you have the dough to shell out to attend these classes that's awesome! They have a lot to offer, just gotta see who as an instructor you vibe with. read more

Thank the heavens we finally have a yoga/barre/pilates studio in Modesto of this caliber! This spacious studio has 2 yoga rooms- one for hot yoga and another larger room for barre, non-heated yoga, and rope yoga. They also have another room for pilates with about 5 reformer machines. I appreciate the small class size for Pilates as you'll get more attention from the instructor to make sure you're doing the moves correctly. I live in San Francisco and some of the pilates studios here have 15-20 machines per class and it's not as personal of an experience. Since I was visiting from out of town, I only had time to try Isabel's HOT 26 class which was a traditional, 90 minute bikram class in a 102 degree room. This is the real deal, ya'll! Be prepared to be fully challenged and leave mentally renewed. Isabel is extremely professional and was trained by Bikram Choudery himself. She was an encouraging instructor who wasn't pushy, pedantic, or judgemental. If you're interested in bikram but have never done it, don't be intimidated! She is so kind and provides modifications if your body isn't ready for all of the postures. I wish I was local because I would definitely get an unlimited membership. I think it's only $150 per month which is a great deal considering the variety of classes they offer and the facilities. Drop in rates are $19 for yoga or barre. There are men and women changing rooms with showers, lockers, water fountains, and toilets. You can rent towels for a charge. I can't wait to come back for a Pilates class! read more

I'm from Malibu and was visiting my mother in modesto when I walked into Sukha Studios. I could not believe that this studio existed in Modesto and that it had so much to offer. It is a supremely serene space, beautifully appointed, immaculate and calm. The classes and teachers are super professional. The place is as beautiful as it's owner Michaela Purnell. She is lovely and her attention to her clients and studio details are beyond reproach. I love this studio. It's quality easily equals studios in LA and NY. read more

I was looking for a place for my 65 year old mother to get some help with her hips, so myself and my sister went with my mom and had a private lesson for Pilates my mom has a very hard time with range of movement and sitting for long periods. My mom was so nervous as we all were and we were so welcomed our instructor took the time to explain everything we we we're doing and made it so fun and challenging at the same time! However, I am sitting outside the studio for my 6am class that I booked several days ago and it is now 6:12 so the instructor did not bother to show up. I have been involved with yoga for 20 years ..... but these guys , live and breathe the ART OF YOGA, the peacefulness it offers and everything in between! The instructors know their stuff !! I can not say enough great things about SUKHA Studio's! Michaela Purnell has created an amazing space out of her passion for Yoga, Pilates and Barre. Not only is everyone in the studio friendly, professional and Certified but the studio itself is very clean. I have been working with Michaela for a year on the Pilates reformer and I am thrilled with the progress we have made. Recently my husband mentioned that he has noticed my posture is better since I have started my practice. I am by profession an Esthetician and was suffering from headaches at the end of my day but since I have been practicing Pilates reformer I am more conscious of my posture it has helped to remedy the discomfort. I wondered into the Sukha studios just as the sign went up, curious as to what they could offer me in the way of rehabilitation, I knew I needed more than a regular exercise studio. Micheala was sure she could help me. She created a special Pilates class for those of us that needed a more restorative practice. She occasionally incorporates yoga and the rope inversion wall into the class as well. I signed up for the unlimited plan it has been the best money I've spent all year. I take 3 classes a week or more. Pilates has given me a new lease on life. All the instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and experienced in modifications for every body and skill level. The atmosphere at Sukha is friendly and welcoming, an oasis from the stress of the outside world. There are also special events and occasional parties ( complementary champagne and wine ) Dont just think about it any more, signup, take a class! You only live once, do something nice for yourself. i highly recommended Sukha for several reasons. The first is the atmosphere is top notch, designed beautifully with the perfect zen vibe. The front desk check in service was kind and helpful. They remembered me on the next visit which, made me feel at home. I am doing this review now because I had a chance to try a few of their offerings to be able to give an honest review: I have taken classes in hot Bikram Hot Yoga 26 with Janet and loved her style of teaching. She was really in-tuned with everyone's moves and posture poses and worked with each individuals needs. She helped create alternative poses for my back and shoulder injuries and felt amazingl-strong! I also took a Sunday Stretch Slow-Flow Hathaway Yoga with Mario and felt stretched-out and light on my feet and mind! I also took his wall stretch class (not exactly sure of the real name of the class) It was excellent for deep stretching it allowed. I am also loving the Reformer Pilates with Heather! I enjoy her enthusiasm, ultimate-knowledge in the Reformer and body physics. I came in not knowing anything about the reformer and she was able to not only assist me but also continue coaching the group without missing a beat! I leave this class every time feeling balanced, stretched with good posture. I got a 2-week pass for unlimited classes for $50 (intro offer). The staff is friendly, helpful, and nonjudgmental. The studio is beautiful, calming, and clean. The pass allowed me to try a range of different classes to understand what each entails- they are all fantastic! I love the physical and mental challenge of yoga and got hooked. I recently attended Sukha's workshop on Stress Elimination and Meditation presented by Randhir. This workshop provided those who attended practical solutions to meditation in our daily lives among the daily grind and stressors. Randhir led us in several meditation exercises that I am already practicing daily because they are so practical, and not overwhelming as sometimes the word 'meditation' can be intimidating or misunderstood. It is also a practice where we learn not to judge ourselves and accept our flaws, while striving to find our best self. In my work as a mental health therapist, I am already using these exercises with my patients to compliment my practice of mindfulness-based stress reduction, and my patients have been receptive!
