I love this salon so much. I followed two incredible people here from the obviously toxic midtown shag haircut epicenter (it shall remain nameless because of how petty that place seemed. But google Meg Ryan shag and AVOID THAT PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE.) The atmosphere is so welcoming-- quite the opposite from bad Kate Moss imagery with dark walls and bad lighting. It has a loft feel with natural light that creeps in to every corner. There are colorful wigs that hang from the ceilings and there's an overall warm vibe, from the check-in process to the customers to the others that work there. Now onto my dream team: Travis/Aura. Travis for cuts and Aura for color. These two are truly the most incredible duo. I get complements all of the time from rando passersby and even in the salon. For color, Aura has done everything to my hair (from platinum blonde to the au natural vibe I have going rn.) and it's always just *that* good. I always feel like I have Rich Btch hair. Which, I am absolutely not one of those people, but I do like the cosplay for one day of leaving the salon and my hair just so and being like... oh yes, my hair? It always looks so natural and Aura is to thank for that. She's truly amazing. And I've seen her do all sorts of shit. She gets the science of hair color in a way that is just so magical to watch. As for the cut, Travis is a maestro. He has the greatest style and has taken me from bobs to shags to long olsen twin hair and the cut always looks so damn good. ALWAYS. Never failed. Is there a way to give more than 5 stars?! Suite Caroline, Cara in particular, is amazing. The salon is upscale without being pretentious. As a new client, before booking an appointment, I had to email the salon a picture of my current hair along with an inspiration photo. The colorist I wanted to work with (Cara) reviewed the photo and assessed what type of appointment I needed. This took the guess work out of "what do I need" and ensured there was enough time for my service. Don't worry, you'll still have a consultation upon arrival! Cara listened to my concerns, looked over all of my inspiration photos, and made recommendations. I didn't feel rushed or like I wasn't listened to (which has definitely happened at other salons). She really just wanted to make sure we were on the same page and that I left happy with my hair. I've been seeing Cara for about 4-5 months now. She is just as amazing as the first appointment. Her attention to detail is extraordinary. Even when she's with another client, she takes little moments to physically check on the status of your hair and make sure everything is going according to plan. Wanna get your hair fixed after a color? Forget it! I was a hair model and paid for the service. While I liked the color when I left the salon, I wore it for a week and decided it was too blonde. Owner is a horrible person. She was rude to my mother and told her she didn't "have time" to do her for highlights because I guess she was written in as a single process. Meanwhile, she told my mother just before that that her and my sister were her only clients for the day and it was 2:00 in the afternoon. So unprofessional and rude! Obviously not willing to give her time and dedication to clients. I also used her once and trust me she's not worth the $600 + a tip on top of that. Having recently moved, I had been on the prowl for a new hairstylist for my thick hair. One of my friends had an exceptionally good hair day and been to Shelby at Suite Caroline. I made an appointment by calling on the phone; they need your credit card to hold the spot just in case. For me, when I get my haircut, I want the hairdresser to take his or her knowledge of hairstyling and apply it to my hair. You wouldn't tell a cardiac surgeon how to bypass your heart; you would just go to one that you knew did a great job, right? I was able to sit down and Shelby immediately was explaining her ideas for how to update my style and my hair flow better. Anyone can go into a salon with a picture of Jennifer Anniston's hair and ask for that. However, this is one of the best haircuts I ever had, and it is suited for my specific hair texture, length, etc.. Yes, this place has $$$ but "Price Is What You Pay, Value Is What You Get." The salon has great service at the front desk, and I got THE BEST scalp massage of my life by the girl who washed my hair. Plus, they have cucumber water - I mean come on what more do you want? So I would 100% recommend that you go to this salon. It's on the second floor in a really cool, trendy space. They have these gorgeous photographs all over the wall of a kaleidoscope of colors of hair. I have a corporate job so that sort of thing isn't for me, but I realized that one of the best aspects of Suite Caroline is that they truly do cater to a wide range of what customers desire. I've been coming to this Salon for over a year. Having followed Johnny from bumble & bumble in Meatpacking, I had pretty high expectations. I'll break the review into two parts: Salon & Stylist. Part 1: Salon I'm a little confused by some of the other reviews people have left. The staff is consummately professional, incredibly inviting, and accommodating to a point that makes you feel like you're stepping into the Midwest instead of a salon in SoHo. The idea that the salon manager (who is an absolute gem) would tell someone they were no longer welcome simply because of a scheduling issue has the same level of believability as the existence of the Tooth Fairy. If someone was actually told they were no longer welcome, it has more to do with the way they treated the staff, not sensitivity around time. The Salon is small, which, after leaving the factory that was bumble & bumble, I prefer. It's evident that everything is done with intention and purpose, which only adds to the unique and inviting feel of the space. Part 2: Stylist Johnny is one of my favorite people on the planet. Even if I don't actually need a haircut, I will call and schedule a bang trim (which is free, btw) just to have a chance to spend some time giggling with him. He's hilarious, and so talented, he can trim my bangs with a razor while simultaneously making a remark just as sharp as the tool in his hand. I've never once left the salon without a huge smile on my face, and I constantly get compliments on my hair (which I credit fully to his skills over my genetics or ability with a flat iron). TL:DR - This is a unique and funky salon that values it's culture and will give you a kick ass haircut. As in all other parts of life, if you respect them, they will do incredible things for you. I normally don't write reviews but after my experience at Suite Caroline's, I felt compelled to give fair warning to people about the ordeal I had. I'm not their typical demographic, I live from pay check to paycheck. That's why I'm an avid users of Salon Apprentice's website. You take your chances when receiving a complementary or low cost service from an apprentice. While not all of my haircuts/color services have been great, some have been amazing. After having longish hair for decades, I was ready to bite the bullet and go vastly shorter. I asked the stylist- her name is Cortney, if she was and apprentice, (I was a little apprehensive about getting such a short, precise haircut from a newbie) she assured me that she was not, so I felt I was in good hands. I showed her an image of the haircut I wanted (specifically googled for fine hair) and what I got was such a mess, I couldn't leave my house without pulling it back in a hairband. I should have done more research about her work, my bad. read more

About 3 weeks ago I went to get my quarter-year highlights with Lena, who I used to see at Ion. I booked an appointment for partial highlights and was charged $425 for full highlights. She did paint several (by that, I mean a few) streaks in the back and so I just went with it (painfully, of course - you see, unlike her celebrity clients I don't have a lot of money and save to get my hair colored by her). On top of that, my grays were not covered at all. I've had partial hair color services in the past with Lena which were (1) less than $200 and (2) included single process. Pricing is all over the place here. I called the salon regarding this latter issue and Trinity said I would have to fork over an additional 185 (on top of the $425 I already paid). Prior to Lena's opening of Suite Caroline (after she left Ion) I went to Marie Robinson and the colorist there (Amy) charged me $375 for highlights, which *includes* single process. I've researched Whittemore House as well. There too - Victoria Hunter, who I think I will visit from here on out, includes single process in her highlights charge ($450). Lena is talented but I cannot reconcile $425 + $185 ($610!) when I have had her services for less in the past (at Ion and for partial highlights, which *included* single process) and when single process with highlights (together in the price) can be had with major colorists at salons like Whittemore or Marie Robinson. Moral of the story: make sure you both are on the same page *before* anything is done on your hair, lest you get a surprise at the register and disappointment a few weeks later in the mirror. read more

I finally decided to try this salon. I had been weighing the pros and cons of various salons for a while, after having spent a lot of time (and money) trying to cover up and fix some of my terrible cuts. Britney gave me a great haircut, especially considering what she had to work with. I had had a short bob that was unevenly cut and made my wavy hair stick out and fall flat. I had been growing it out for a good number of months before braving the scissors again. I left feeling great about my hair. Britney really understood both how to cut for the type of hair I have, as well as how to keep it low maintenance. Now, almost a few months later, I'm enjoying that the cut is growing out very nicely. It still has a nice shape. Whilst the price-tag is high, I appreciate a haircut that can look good for the three months between cuts. read more

I searched all over NYC for a hair colorist who could actually create the tint I was looking for. After finding Lena (the salon owner) I was so happy I finally found a competent colorist. After seeing her on a regular basis and always leaving at least a 30% tip as well as being respectful of her time - she had her receptionist inform me she was too busy to do my hair any longer and pawned me off on a well meaning but incompetent colorist. She is a colorist known for coloring high profile model's hair. She made it clear she no longer has time for the "little people", so unless you're a Vogue model don't expect Lena Ott to keep you as a client. read more

The Talent: I've been going to see Lena for my color for about 8 years, and followed her through her salons. From the moment she colored my hair, I didn't want anyone else to touch it. I dye to cover greys, and generally stick to something close to my natural color, although I like to change it up now and then. It looks totally natural, but better than natural, you know? She and her crew do a few things differently from other colorists, and you can see the difference. They're truly artists. I also started seeing Amy for my styling about a year or two ago, and frankly, there's just no one better. When she cuts your hair, it looks good the next day, and three weeks later, and even a couple of months later. It's like she has a superpower that allows her to see how it's going to grow in. I have thick, wavy hair, and she even manages to cut it so the waves fall well. It's absurd. When Amy or Lena are unavailable I see Britney and Mauricio, and they're both phenomenal. I have friends that I've sent to the other colorists and stylists, and they swear by them. You just can't go wrong here. The Salon: I also love the experience here. It's a large, airy space with lots of natural light. Both styling and washing chairs are comfy, and they'll bring you a cute little footstool to put your feet up while you're getting washed/glossed if you so desire. There's a comfy leather couch and cool art books to read while you wait (although I've never once waited for more than a minute or two--which in itself is kind of a coup). They've usually got oldies on in the background, and all around a kind of laid-back, positive vibe that I really appreciate, given the snobbery one often encounters at the higher end salons. Everyone is friendly and down-to-earth. I recommend this place to all my friends--why wouldn't I recommend it to strangers? Five stars! read more

I've had my hair colored beautifully by Calla every color of the rainbow and cut by Shelby with absolutely perfect results that shine weeks and weeks after. Calla really knows what she is doing with the texture of my thick hair and both she and Shelby have taken the time to understand the look I am going for since I am so ADHD about my style. Like..mohawks and bleached brows at Astor, bouffant blowouts in Chinatown, 90-minute bluegrass sessions at Crops for Girls, all the high-end Japanese Salons...I know how difficult it can be to find people who can bring any idea to life, creatively and with consistently fabulous results. Everyone who works there is genuinely friendly and so attentive...and you can tell because people are actually smiling in every chair. You walk in feeling welcome and when you leave, its with head-turning results. Seriously worth it given the mega-watt "I'm that b*tch" feeling I have stepping out into SoHo after. read more

suite caroline & the team there somehow manages to create an environment that feels genuinely like the cool kids club but not so overly so that you feel you don't belong (im not a cool kid). hair expertise on cut & color are second to none and I've been to arguably some of the best in nyc over the last 15 years as well as a few in Paris and LA. I've had my cut by 3 different ppl there, all amazing. I see Shelby on the regular and she single handedly changed my look gradually from long and tired to short and fun and most importantly easy and manageable on a daily basis. Cara is the best colorist of all time. After a highlight I feel like a new woman but two months after it's grown in I also feel like it's totally natural and I could be just fine without a new highlight for quite some time. It's the best. I went in today for corrective color with Lena. In all of 30 minutes she literally changed my life. I had been wearing a hat since my last color disaster. She was so conscious of doing the right thing that she didn't do certain color changes that others would have done and is having me come back for that to keep the integrity of my hair and color. Yet even without those changes she was able to give me a beautiful hair color. She completely got what I was looking for, heard me and executed what I needed as the client. Best salon experience ever. I found SC through Yelp, Instagram by Elsa Hosk and another bunch of models and Google searches. Usually, a high class salon with some prominent clients and steep prices reflect that in the salon's general attitude and ambience - not here. I made an appointment by walking in with my mom and asking for one with my requested colorist and stylist: Mauricio and Britney. The owner, Lena, was super helpful and got me the closest possible appointment and called over Mauricio to check out my hair and let him tell me what he thought of my idea & what he'd do, which I found really impressive and professional. The day of the appointment I looked anything but glamorous, I came from the gym with a sweater and bun and Nike's, but I was treated like a queen. Mauricio is incredibly talented and sweet and really talked me through everything (I'd never gotten my hair colored before!) and just seemed to love what he was doing. Even through shampooing and Britney blowdrying my hair he always came back to look at it and just seemed excited to see how it turned out- I loved that. The head massage was amazing and I was always asked if I needed anything (they got me an iPhone charger too). Britney is also incredibly sweet and totally understood what I wanted. She took her time looking at everything before she cut and didn't rush at all. She also gave me the best blowdry I've ever had. Afterwards, my hair was glossy, bouncy, voluminous - it was everything I ever wanted my hair to be. I had been out on the street for 5 minutes waiting to cross a street when a woman asked me about my hair because it looked so healthy and radiant. Boom. Never switching salons again! I got a haircut from Johnny last night and he is an artist! He literally gave me exactly what I asked for- I brought in 5 pics of celebrities with haircuts I liked and he knew what would be best for my face shape and hair and I left literally with celebrity hair. He spent so much time with me and went way beyond what I've had a most haircuts, he styled me at the end (in like 10 mins) and my hair has never looked better. He took off about 9 inches and gave me a super trendy lob. Loved him! Would definitely recommend!!! read more

I followed my hairstylist Shelby here from her previous Salon and haven't looked back since. There, she introduced me to Calla who now colors my hair and they are both unbelievable. Shelby is a scissor-wizard and always knows what to do, is honest about what will and will not work my hair and makes me feel like a legend every time I leave. Calla paints my hair like no one I've ever gone to before. She's professional, quick, and just an all-around incredible stylist/ human. Ive finally found a salon where I keep wanting to come back. Not easy for a gal with course curly and difficult to manage hair. Calla always does a great job with color. Shes willing to go lighter on my naturally dark brown hair, and she always mixes up a color that matches my skin tone, takes her time with my highlights, and has me feelin like a million bucks when I come out of there. Cortney is my go to gal for hair cut- I feel like she really gets my texture and always makes my hair feel and look amazing. Cara does my color; and she is fantastic! It found the salon on Instagram after searching through some the pages of models from Victoria's Secret. Blonde balayage is hard to do, especially on someone like me who has very fragile hair. Cara and the other colorists at Suite Caroline do blonde balayage beautifully. At my consultation with Cara, she really took the time to listen to me. I'm always amazed by how attentive she is during the whole process. On a plus side, she is an extremely cool and spunky chick and very fun to talk to! Better yet, I feel like the price I pay is totally worth it. Had never colored my hair before, so I was a little nervous. Malcolm was very thorough, beforehand giving me an iPad with a Pinterest with different pics of colors and looks, asking what I liked and didn't like. We eventually decided on a reddish medium brown, and he NAILED IT. Everyone told me not to dye my hair before I did it, but afterwards all my friends love it just as much as I do. This review is not based on their work, it's based on the manager's customer service. I'm obsessed with hair color and was so excited to try Lena, in fact I even recommended two friends who now see her even though I never tried her, just based on her Instagram and press. I made an appointment two months ago and then the appointment crept up on me (it's NY we are all very busy) and I realized it 20 hours (rather than 24 hours) before my appointment as I looked at my iCalendar. I had a last minute trip out of the country so couldn't make it. Nobody from the salon ever called me to confirm my appointment, which is standard for all salons who have a strict cancellation policy. So I admit we were both at fault. I explained this to the manager who just avoided that they didn't call me either, and he said I should have checked my calendar. He never mentioned why a call wasn't made despite their website saying they always call, so clearly they forgot. I explained I was very excited to try Lena and was very sorry. Anyway, after going back and forth on the phone he told me that they wouldn't charge me but that I would "never be welcome in the salon again". Nice. It's a shame because I'm a great and loyal customer. Oh well... read more
