I found this place on Yelp, easy walking distance from South Street Seaport where I'm staying. I'm so glad I came here. I called the day before to see if I could get a wash and a blowout, they had no problem finding me an appointment, I found the place very easily walking, it's small but perfect in size. My stylist was friendly and so helpful, and the head massage while getting my hair washed was worth the price alone. I didn't want to fuss with hotel shampoo etc.. on this trip ( I packed lightly) and I'm so glad I did. My hair looks amazing and I feel pretty. I'm only giving 3 stars because they got me in last minute, and everyone there was so nice. Blowout, tons of thick curly hair. Absolutely FABULOUS!! Shampoo / head massage! Asked them to leave some conditioner in... nope! Then I sit in the chair, and Jerry and the shampooist commence to start 'getting the moisture out...' two blow dryers... BIG NONO WITH THICK CURLY DRY HAIR!! Any good stylist knows... soaking wet hair, big brush, pull it hard, dry it, flat iron. THEN HE PUTS MOUSSE IN HIS HAND... NOOOOO!! Jerry insisted on a small brush, which then took forever for him to tame the frizz he'd caused. Took FOREVER. Looked *ok*... when I left, and but Now I'm left with a frizzy mess a day later. A good blowout feels silky when you leave, then lasts for over a week. Ugh. read more

I stumbled upon Coiffeur when I desperately needed a haircut and I wanted to find a salon near my office near the Financial District/Lower Manhattan area. I saw that it had great reviews so I decided to give it a try. Fast forward to now and I've been to Coiffeur a handful of times. Once you enter the salon and check in with reception, you have a seat in the waiting area and you're offered a beverage as they take your coat to hang up. Most of time when I come to Coiffeur, I get a much needed trim, but once in a while I come for a color session. I usually make an appointment with Tatsuya. He's the best. He's so nice and he takes his time with your hair. He is a perfectionist and makes you feel like a million bucks. I've also had Chie cut my hair and she's sweet as well. She's makes good conversation and she's honest when you ask for her opinion. Junco was my colorist and she's so cute. Everyone at Coiffeur makes you feel welcomed. I recommend this salon. The price is a little steep for a haircut, but it's Manhattan, and you definitely get what you pay for. I've never had a bad experience at Coiffeur. They are great. read more

I really would not recommend this place to anyone, especially if you have curly or ethnic hair. The stylist seemed to be intimidated by my hair making comments like "there's just so much hair". They are taking all of the precautions for everyones safety as well as maintaining their fair prices. Matoyo is an absolute national treasure and I won't let anyone else highlight/cut/style my hair. I really hope this salon stays open as I know all businesses are suffering now. I can track my life in the mind's eye from the hair salons I have visited over the years. Picture Bombay in the late 70s and early 80s. My dad would bring little me to New Star haircutters. Often times, my older brother would be part of this family ritual. For 50 rupees (about two dollars then), we would each sport a new do, thanks to the assembly line efficiency of Thomas and the rest of the Sunday morning crew. Fast forward several years. It was the friseur on Paradeplatz in Zurich. My German was 6 on 10 at best, and our conversations would be liberally peppered with "ich verstehe nicht" (I don't understand). But what I did understand was that Herr Muller was a no-nonsense man who took his haircutting responsibilities seriously. Then there was a guy near Repulse Bay in Hong Kong. He had impeccably well-maintained hair at 60, and set a fine example for his customers. Not to forget Saco by Covent Garden in London. Or the vacation spots when I am able to find the time for a haircut--Brasil and Japan are particulary fresh in my memory. Yes, my hair and I have traveled places. But that is not the point. I have come to measure my haircutting experience based on the cumulative features of the various hairdressers whose station it was in life to deal with my hair for a living. When you boil it all down, only three features matter: -- Speed -- Quality -- Service Coiffeur excels at all three. No sooner than you enter the salon, you are greeted by friendly French voices that get you seated comfortably within minutes of your arrival. After the shampoo has done its work, you are brought to one of those adjustable chairs that is worked by a friendly staff member. Claire is a fine example. The conversation takes various forms. "Not a single gray hair" she would comment at times--how flattering. Or "you have to eat more--you lost a few pounds since I met you last?"--surely caring. Or "your so-and-so friend was here"--quite amusing. As the haircut progresses, I can tell that Claire knows her way around my hair. She seems like a tour guide in an Amazonian jungle, who knows the twists and turns of the hard-to-maneuver road along the way. Now there are occasions where I choose to go to the barber by my office building when I am hard-pressed for time. And friends take notice immediately, and liberally poke fun at me. So while I often feel that I'm not worthy of the $60 price tag for Coiffeur, with tips added, it is safe to say I am going to stick to Coiffeur to keep my unruly tresses at bay. read more

First I got a big cup of cappuccino, then Caroline put a pile of great style rags on my lap (gasp! Anna Nicole's secret diary!) and 40 minutes later I was cut and blown dry! I had my haircut at my regular salon and was so upset was going to cry.. the back felt like I had a mullet (hello David Bowie 1980). Scheduled an appointment for an adjustment and guess what?? We are entered into maybe Shelter in Place, so my regular salon closed. Walked across the street and asked it someone there could fix it. The owner so nicely fit me in and didn't even charge me. I randomly found this place on my lunch break a year ago and got a cut and color from Audrey which was amazing! It was a beautiful low maintenance cut and the color was so flattering. It was clearly colored but natural looking. Flash forward a year later and I forgot Audrey's name and the name of the salon. I ended up moving so I couldn't conveniently stop over during lunch. After realizing that I wanted Audrey again I made a trip to just stop in since I couldn't remember the salon name but only the locations. They welcome walk ins with no problem! And they are very friendly. Audrey wasn't available but they were able to take me right away. I had two different stylists - one for color and one for cut (I don't really like that). I usually like dealing with only one person. Motoyo cut my hair and she was great. We went a little shorter and she talked me through everything and I ended up liking the results. I even asked her to do a technique she doesn't really do and she was open to it. My color was done by James who is very nice and seemed like an expert. He made suggestions and went to work. My blow out after looked great...except after washing it on my own (with color specific salon recommended shampoo and conditioner) the color looks too much and blotchy. It looks a little like foil highlights because you can clearly see the lines of color and it isn't blended. I mean it still looks good but it isn't blended in that well. See pic Overall okay experience, but I may need to go fix my color again soon because it's starting to bother me. Also they stylists determine prices and it's a little pricey. read more
