I ordered the Garlic bomb ramen with tonkatsu broth. It had a lot of roasted, and also fresh shaved raw garlic, but it was not too stringent, or overwhelming. It had good amount of green onions also. I liked the savory and flavorful broth along with those sharp ingredients. Some or a couple of the pork pieces were tender, but not all of them. It's prob because it was not part of the pork belly that I'm used to. This is our 3rd time in less than 2 weeks eating here...first time was takeout and was excellent as my review reads, 2nd visit we dined in, sat at the sushi bar but it wasn't a normal "sushi bar experience" as the sushi guy doesn't speak English so the servers take the orders...regardless, the service was awesome! They're very nice and professional there! And we were greatly surprised as the fish was absolutely wonderful! The albacore, yellowtail and salmon were so fresh and buttery! I also love the kitanoya roll which is basically the spider roll (soft shell crab roll) with spicy tuna. So good but tell them to hold the sweet sauce! There's nothing like ruining a great roll with sweet sauce! Ugh!By the way, Suisen was Kitanoya and my husband and I met one of the now 2 owners who explained to us that there were 3 owners-and the one who owned the name Kitanoya wanted out so the now 2 owners changed the name and kept the menu the same. He said everything is basically the same. This 3rd visit was take out and the ramen soups we ordered were so good! My husband's spicy albacore hand roll was as well except it was so small (compared to the one he had when we ate at the restaurant?) I guess take out hand rolls are smaller than the dine in ones? I was craving Ramen and decided to give this place a try. Having previously lived in Camarillo, my go to spot has been Cagami ramen, however this place is a solid choice if you're in the area. Ramen - My fiancé and I ordered the Chashu Ramen and added a few extras (egg, bean sprouts, etc.). I had mine with thin noodles while my fiancé had the regular noodles, and we both ordered a 4/5 spice level. They are very generous with their portions and the amount of meat. Taste was pretty solid throughout and definitely satisfied the ramen craving. As to the meat, it's on the leaner/less fatty side, which I like, although some pieces can be a bit tough. The meat has a seared taste which I also enjoyed. As to the noodles, both were fine, with the regular noodles being a bit more hearty. As to the thickness, I didn't think there was a huge difference between the regular and the thin. Broth was tasty and the level 4 spice was pretty spicy (not too too spicy but I might do a 3 next time to enjoy the taste of the broth more). I also really liked the egg as it was nice and flavorful, more so than other places I've tried. Overall, I think the ramen comes together nicely. Sushi - We also ordered the Golden California Roll. Very filling and generous portion. I think it's pretty on par with other good California style sushi. I wouldn't say it's a stand out but it's definitely tasty if you're craving a sushi roll. Service - Went in at around 8 pm on a Monday and there was no wait so we were seated right away. It look a little while for the server to come get our order but he was really attentive and friendly throughout our visit. Change is inevitable in the world of dining, but I wasn't expecting this much change with the newly renamed restaurant that used to be Kitanoya. We ordered takeout, and the less than friendly hostess had lost our food. She was irritated, but she finally found it. Let me start with the elephant in the room - the food. I could only describe it as "basement-y". The flavor palette in all their dishes were reminiscent of basement dampness and mold. The sushi and rolls had a similar aftertaste that resembled more of a musty cellar than fresh cut rolls. Perhaps they used week old, dried out rice? The ramen was another disaster in its own right. No flavor, no spice, nothing to stimulate my taste buds. The miso broth was an ode to musty blandness, the base literally tasted like it was made from swamp water. I added a star because there wasn't much salt in the broth. However, this is very fishy - because isn't miso supposed to be salty? What did they make the base from if it wasn't authentic miso? I added another star because this place offers a scale of spiciness levels. However, it was laughable when my level -nine spice order arrived devoid of any heat. It was so mild that I could have fed it to my dog without hesitation. The passion and meticulousness that is hallmark of Japanese cuisine was lost in translation. I appreciate all the options on the menu but the flavor profile does not make the cut. If this was my first experience with Japanese food, I would have left with an assumption that all Japanese cuisine lacks flavor. One can only hope that they can rediscover the magic that makes Japanese Ramen and sushi stand out amongst the culinary world. read more

It was Kitanoya and they have remodeled and renamed the place. I'm not sure which of the prior owners still own it, but I tried it today and wasn't as impressed as before. They are cheap with the eggs in the ramen and only give you a half an egg. The chashu pork is 1/2 the size it used to be and not flavorful. The tofu chunks are so small, what's the point? The green onions were nice and there were maybe 4-5 pieces of fried garlic or onion. Not like it was and portions were bigger before. My friend had the tempura fried veggies and they were very greasy and didn't seem to have been fried long enough. The miso soup my friend had said it tasted odd. Our bill was $55 for tempura veggies, miso, two sapporos, and one ramen with added veggies and tofu. The servers were kind. A little slow when it comes to checking in on water refilled or offering to go boxes. The new remodel is nice and more comfortable then Kitanoya. I'll try it again, but there is a place in Camarillo I like better...before it was a toss up. read more

I'm going to start off by saying I literally hate leaving negative reviews especially for small businesses. Being in a family where we own two i understand the struggles of making sure a business is successful. However, this business needs a lot of work when it comes to customer service and quality of food. In no way am i a picky eater. My mother was in a ramen mood while 3 of us wanted sushi. The food came out very quickly which was good because we were hungry. The sushi however was kind of flavorless and just tasted old. My mother's ramen came and as the employee was placing it down we all literally saw a long black hair across the soup. They couldn't even try to say it was hers because it was on there while it was being placed down. She also has blonde hair. We asked to get it replaced which they did but again... flavorless. Even when food quality can be bad in a business at least customer service can save it. However, these employees just appear to be teenagers who just graduated from high school and have absolutely no customer service training whatsoever. If you are the owner of this business reading this please take the time to train your employees to save your business. Employees should be happy to serve you and should be moving with a sense of urgency. I asked for a spoon and watched my female waitress walk away and start having a 5-10 minute conversation with someone then come back and look at us and realize she never grabbed the spoon. I had to remind the male waiter to please bring the alcohol i ordered. He was literally in the kitchen just laughing it up with another male employee. Minus 1 star because they started using the cheap Green Nori for the rolls. Not the Black nori. Now the rolls stink because of the cheap seaweed they use, and the prices aren't cheap either. Previously Kitanoya, Suisen has taken over the site and there was some revamping done, but the seating is largely the same as before. Not sure if management change or they just had a name change. There is still outdoor seating which overlooks the promenade, which is nice, but hard to say if service is nice from sitting outside. There is easy parking outside, but seating is fairly limited indoors. If you have a large group, sitting outside would be better than inside. Upon sitting down and arriving, we were asked what we would drink and we said waters all around. Those arrived, but we still weren't given menus. After a while, one server came and asked if we were ready to order to which I said we were never given menus. The menus arrive and within a minute, a different server comes and asks if we are ready to order. A bit skeptical on their service and how they split the work up. Ordering food-wise, you pick the type of meat you would like and then choose the broth and any potential add-ons. The variety isn't huge, as almost every ramen comes with green onion, bamboo, and deep fried garlic. Regardless of what you choose, there is a huge lack of different ingredients in the ramen bowl itself. Instead, this will likely push you to choosing add-ons such as egg, corn, fish cakes, etc to bulk up your bowl. A large grab for money in my opinion as each add-on is $1.5 or $2.50. We ordered in total the chashu ramen, fried chicken ramen, and wonton ramen. The worst was the wonton ramen. Despite coming with 6 wontons, each was basically a wrapper with no filling (chicken) on the inside. The wrappers were thick like potsticker wrappers instead of wonton wrappers as well. The fried chicken ramen's fried chicken was overcooked. I believe they attempted to make "popcorn" chicken, but it honestly looked like leftover scraps of chicken bits that they fried. Not the most pleasant bites and very dry. The chashu was interesting in that it didn't leave us wanting for more, but we just felt... it was there. There was meat in the bowl and it's nothing to praise about. For the food, the lunch special option was available so opted to give that a try as it's kind of like "half-price" for half the size of the item. We had the Takoyaki and the chashu don as the two sides to give and try. The Takoyaki was nice and fresh and honestly I would give it a try again. There was a piece of octopus inside and the batter itself was nice and fluffy. The chashu don was a large miss. The rice and chashu were texturally very hard. The rice must have been left heated for too long in the rice pot as they weren't fluffy at all. The chashu was also very hard and reminded me of hardened pork carnitas. I think they made the chashu log and took the leftover end pieces and diced them for the don. Up to them, but the pieces were hard and honestly difficult to eat. They doused it with teriyaki sauce and that helps to eat it, but I highly don't suggest giving it a try given the quality and if it's always like that. The broths for the ramen were nothing special. The tonkotsu barely has the tonkotsu flavors behind it and the creamy texture is missing. Lastly, the bowls came out barely warm and the add-ons that the family got were cold. Specifically, the family ordered the fish cake and they were the pink-skinned colored fish cakes and they gave three slices that were cold. Honestly, if you are going to charge $1.50 for fish cakes and you give 3 cold slices for it, it's disappointing and a major turnoff for future visits. All in all, largely a miss for a ramen spot here I find. The price isn't worth what you are provided and if you want 2 or 3 add-ons, you are practically paying for half the price for another bowl. Highly don't suggest giving them a try, but if you do, it's up to your discretion. Note: largely a preference, but I also did not like the music choice. They involve curse words and do not give a family-friendly environment. read more

I had the privilege of being born and raised in Japan for 14yrs living close to Motomatchi "China Town" and had the best of the best Chinese and Ramen table fare. With that experience I'm able to distinguish authentic Ramen, to soso Ramen and the Suisen spicy miso "Shacho Ramen" is ONE of the BEST I've had! Bar none. BLOWS ALL OF VC ramen shops away. Pro tip ordering, I also ask David the waiter to make the noodles harder "mein katame" and add an egg and extra noodle. This establishment used to be Kitanoya with partnered owners, now it's just Johnny, it's the same staffs that made the same ingredients. This may very well be the worst sushi joint I have EVER been to. I ordered a shrimp roll and got a whole lotta crab meat. The circumference of this roll was absurdly large, and like I said all crab meat. Plus it tasted like crap. I ate one piece and they wouldn't take it off my bill. So we were in the mood for sushi and also Ramen this place has both and they're both very good I tried the firecracker roll which I loved and was my favorite. The volcano roll which wasn't as good as other sushi places but was still a remarkable roll. The octopus sushi was great. It had a zesty sauce on it, which gave it a unique flavor to go long with the texture. Then we had the yellowtail hand roll, and the fish was really fresh it was very good. I would recommend it and the next thing we got was the spicy miso garlic bomb Ramen I really enjoyed the presentation of the bowl and the spoon (mini ladle) felt very fancy and when they say garlic bomb they really mean it!!! the broth was rich spicy garlicky and I couldn't get enough of the noodles (which were egg noodles) and they were cooked perfectly with the right amount of chew. It also came with tender pieces of chashu and lots of green onion delicious. Overall this is a great little spot and we will definitely be back for more. read more
