My party of 4 walked in and were seated right away on a Thursday evening. We all did the Trust Me set. I was able to sub out the crab hand roll for a salmon hand roll. My favorites in the set were the tuna and chutoro sashimi, salmon sushi, and toro hand roll. One thing was that the rice was pretty hot which warmed up the sashimi. I've had Sugarfish in the past and the rice was never this hot before. I definitely prefer a more room temperature rice that keeps the sashimi cooler. Overall fun experience though and service was great. Would come back!

Sugarfish has been an LA institution since they burst onto the scene a decade ago. This Pasadena location just happened to be nearby and we decided to pop in for a late lunch after visiting the Norton Simon Museum. We parked on a side street but they have parking at the Commons structure and validate too. We walked in and asked for seating for 2 and were shown to the bar. No problem with us. We ordered the Trust Me and Trust Me Lite options, plus one order of unagi nigiri. I also ordered the sustainable sparkling water, which happened to be soda water from their soda dispenser. We were handed plates of edamame which was served cold. My husband is not a fan of soybeans so more for me. Our first plate of tuna and chutoro shashimi was the perfect start to our meal. Then came out the nigiri in rapid succession: tuna, yellowtail, salmon, sea bream, etc. The toro handroll was tasty. His blue crab handroll came out around the same time as my unagi, which was perfect. We loved that the rice was warm and that the fish was thickly sliced. The fish was so fresh! We enjoyed it immensely. Lunch was on my boss since I received a On Me gift card from the company and Sugarfish just happens to be one of the locations listed as a restaurant that accepts it. We had a lovely lunch and went in search of dessert. This location of Sugarfish is located in the Commons near Williams Sonoma in Pasadena.

The Nozawa Trust Me, easily really filling for those that usually eat a lot. Edamame: very standard, lightly cold, lightly salted. Tuna and Chutoro Sashimi: soft paired with soysauce Albacore Sushi, ponzu with chives: My favorite between the three options. Soft and buttery. Salmon Sushi: Fresh and soft. New Zealand Sea Bream Sushi, citrus salt: Little tough and texture is like shrimp. Toro Hand Roll: Warm, seaweed fresh but not crispy. Bluefin Otoro Sushi: Buttery and so so soft. Japanese Yellowtail Sushi, lemon: buttery as well and refreshing tang with lemon. Hirame Sushi, yuzu ponzu: was a bit drenched with ponzu so it was slightly salty and sour than usual. Blue and Dungeness crab hand roll: texture is more like canned tuna.

I can't believe I haven't written a review for this location yet. I've been eating Sugarfish for years and the Pasadena one is easily my most visited. Came by on a Wednesday around 8:30pm and there was no wait. The hostess was super friendly and the service was excellent as you'd expect here. We ordered the Trust Me and the Nozawa. Since each nigiri comes with two pieces, me and my girl usually just share both sets so we get a bigger variety. Some standouts for me were the salmon with konbu, the pink lobster, and the anago eel, but honestly every piece was solid. This place is just very consistent and that's why I keep coming back. I recently went to the La Brea location and felt it was a bit lacking, but the Pasadena spot has always been reliable for me. If you've been to Sugarfish you already know what you're getting, clean simple sushi done well every time. Also don't forget to fill out the birthday card at the end. After two check ins you get a free birthday meal which is a nice perk. Overall I love this location and will definitely be back soon.

I had Sugarfish delivered and it was delicious. While I prefer dining in to enjoy the warm rice and fresh nori hand rolls, their delivery has been consistently solid and always hits the spot. I ordered the albacore sushi with green onions and ponzu sauce, a few orders of the fresh salmon sushi with toasted sesame, and a lobster cut roll served with soy sauce and wasabi. The albacore with green onions, ponzu, and fresh lemon was perfectly balanced. The salmon with toasted sesame and soy is my favorite here; it's so simple and absolutely delicious. Feels yummy in my body. And the lobster cut roll was a treat with its natural buttery richness. What keeps me coming back is the attention to detail. Sugarfish knows how to pair simple, quality ingredients for a totally awesome experience. The fish is excellent, and I love the clean cuts and texture of the fish along with the flavor. Everything just works together beautifully

Visited on a weekday evening and there was a small wait. We tried the The Nozawa Trust Me $40 and the Don't Think. Just Eat. $60. Both menus were very good! It is very dark in the restaurant and limited seats. Staff were knowledgeable and friendly. If you fill out the card and visit 2x before your bday you can get a free meal on your bday! There is a mandatory service fee. There is parking validation.

This was my first time at this location & the ambiance is much smaller than the other locations I've been to. Luckily, the 3 of us didn't have to wait so long. I ordered the "trust me" which is what I usually order & the price is very reasonable. The quality of fish is always fresh & the rice to fish ratio is small & perfect. I like that they serve their rice warm. I love their hand-roll. The seaweed is crisp & crunchy when you bite into their roll. It's never soggy like some of the other places I've tried. Service was great.

Trust me, you'll love this place. Haha get it. Anyways I first came here in January of 2023 and have a ritual of coming basically once a month with my best friend and sometimes I stop in more or get it to go! The warm rice and quality of the fish is unbeatable for this price in my opinion. The sushi is just good quality fish and no crazy sauces or rolls made, which honestly is why the meal feels so light and filling in a great way. I do wish you could make reservations though, but you know thankfully I'm not opposed to getting early dinner at 5 pm to not wait and thankfully the soulcycle is right next to it so you can plan it right! My personal go to order that I've gotten more times than I can count is salmon nigiri, unagi nigiri, and a yellowtail cut roll with a hot green tea!

Enjoyed our meal at the restaurant. We ordered the Nozawa Trust Me and the Trust Me set ! Love how the rice is warm and everything was so tasty and fresh ! The little complex is cute . It is a super small restaurant and we went right when they opened at 11:30 and there was already a line but we got seated right away. They also validate parking .

Let's talk about the best stuff... the food. 11/10... the "trust me" dinner option offers a wide variety of fish that are all incredibly fresh and tasty. Plates come out one by one which is helpful for digestion and making room for more (lol) So why 3 stars? Because we waited over an hour on a Thursday evening after we were told it'd be a 15 min wait. Fine.. but the hostess mentioned many tables had closed their check and were chatting.. also fine, I do that often. But at an establishment that does not offer reservations, not capping time at the table means no one will be sat in a timely fashion. We had to ask her for updates at least 3 times. Next time I rather be told up front the wait will be an hour, not 15 min.

I have come here twice in the past month. This has been in my mind to go to since I saw their to go boxes trending online, but I did not expect to be so blown away by the Trust Me tasting menu. There is a bit of a wait, make sure to check in with the host before the dinner rush, I've waited 30 minutes and 1.5 hours the past two visits. Lighting is dim, there is a candle for ambiance for dinner, tables are small but fit one dish and a drink at a time. Onto the food, my pictures do not do these dishes justice but please know as someone who EXCLUSIVELY eats Yama/grocery store or AYCE sushi, the quality AND pricing of this tasting menu is insanely valuable. Tuna and Chutoro Sashimi- 10/10 perfect no notes, maybe my favorite, perfect way to start the sauce is acidic and a little sweet and cuts the fattiness of the fish well. I find it hard to not eat everything as fast as I can and savor the moment Nigiri- overall 9/10, was not a fan of the sesame on the salmon and the yellowtail wasn't exceptionally better than anything I've had before. The scallop maybe changed my life, my favorite sashimi piece and a surprising highlight Handrolls- Toro handroll 10/10 no notes wish this never ended Blue crab roll 8/10, very good but im not a big crab girl Bay Scallop Handroll 10/10 i love scallops I swapped the blue crab roll for this and ordered an additional one because it was so good "Best melt in your mouth sushi I've ever had" "Sensational" -quotes from my friends after we dined

This sushi spot was quite small and had limited seating but there was indoor and outdoor seating, as well as seating at the bar Parking was challenging since they don't have their own parking lot but there was a nearby parking lot which was shared with many other businesses Service wasn't too good and not too attentive but it could be because I went on Tuesday around noon so it was pretty busy. However, I felt that service could have been better. I'm not a fan of their built-in 16% tip because I feel like service could be disappointing but I am still forced to pay 16% tip Menu had a good variety of Nigiri, hand rolls, and set meals and they were reasonably priced. Most the Nigiri were $6-$8, hand rolls were $6-$9, and cut rolls were $10-$18 Sushi sets had 4 options - - Trust Me Lite ($24) - Trust Me ($32) - Nozawa Trust Me ($40) - Don't Think, Just Eat ($60) I got the Nozawa Trust Me and it came with 10 dishes! 1) Edmamame - this didn't taste fresh and was nothing special so I just ate a few and saved room for the sushi! 2) Tuna & Chutoro Sashimi was not bad. It was a little too salty since it was drenched with soy sauce so I couldn't really taste the fish much unfortunately so this was 6/10 3) Albacore Sushi was so delicious! The fish was so fresh and didn't taste fishy. The rice was so soft and cooked perfectly. This was 9/10 4) Salmon Sushi was so good! The Salmon was so fresh and buttery. It literally melted in my mouth so this was 10/10 5) Toro Hand Roll was decent. The Toro was not bad but it didn't stand out either. The seaweed was very crispy and delicious so this was 6/10 6) Chutoro Sushi was pretty good. It was very fresh and rich in flavor! This was 8/10 7) Japanese Yellowtail Sushi was yummy! It was super fresh and buttery so this was 8/10 8) New Zealand Sea Bream Sushi was tasty. It had a subtly sweet flavor and very fresh so this was 8/10 9) Hirame Sushi was ok and was a little too salty because of the yuzu ponzu on top. The sauce was a little overwhelming so I couldn't really taste the fish so this was 6/10 10) Blue and Dungeness Crab Handroll was amazing! It was so fresh and stuffed with plenty of crab meat! The crab meat was so flavorful and delicious! This was definitely my favorite! This was 10/10 Overall, the food was incredible but the service could use some improvement!

Always enjoy coming to this little courtyard, such happy vibes all around here! Sugarfish hits the spot today! Everything was delish and service was great. 16% fee added to your checks for better wages = same difference as tip but as long as it goes to employee =) we're ok with that. Park in the structure and remember to validate. I think we still paid $4 parking.

Hello, Are dogs allowed in the outdoor seating area?

I don't think Sugarfish have an outdoor seating area. I think the tables/seats outside in the courtyards are for the general public.

Is the chef a trained sushi chef from Japan?

It's not one chef and there's many locations. If you go to nozawa bar the answer is yes. The real question is whether or not you could tell the difference. That old saying... "If you have to ask..." ppl don't realise there's not some "Japan… Read more

    No there isn't.

Is any of the fish wild? Or all farmed?

    There is wild fish offering

Do they still have online checkin?

I don't believe so. Every time I've gone it has always been just in person wait list and you get a text message to follow your spot in line. I would love to be able to check in remotely because I live far away!

    Do they make Avocado rolls?

    No. No vegan options.

Do they require vaccine passports to dine in?

No, they do not, as of 3/4/22

How long is the wait on Sunday night?

    It's a 1.5 hr wait 730pm on a Thursday night. 17th in line

Is this business (small) dog friendly for outdoor seating?

No it isn't. No outdoor seating 😕

Limited availability items also 2 pieces each order? Can we just order a la carte? Is there indoor dining yet?

Yes, you can order a la carte. The have a separate section on the menu for it. There is now indoor dining, but there aren't that many tables inside as it is a small restaurant.

How many pieces come with the Pink Lobster?

Pink Lobster like all nigiri options are 2 pieces per order.

Do they charge 16% service charge on take out orders?

16% is too much for to go. Tax plus 16 %, service charge, I can almost order a togo box.

    What time do they open?

    11:30am

    Do they have high chairs?

I think I've seen them in use for infants and toddlers. Call the restaurant to confirm.

I was seated right away, and I opted for a 10-piece omakase. However, it took a really long time for it to arrive, to the point that other patrons who arrived after me got their sushi before me. It was confusing, but eventually, I got my food. I'd asked to have the omakase come all at once, but for some reason, I got five first, then another five long after I'd finished the first half. In addition, I was not informed of the sushi pieces for the first half, so I didn't know what I was eating. It also took a while to get my complementary fried shrimp head and my black sesame panna cotta (the latter was absolutely delicious, honestly the highlight!). Service was really slow, but the staff were really apologetic about it, given that it was super busy (for weekday lunch)! However, I'd made the reservation for my birthday, and unfortunately, I found the experience disappointing. The sushi was okay, but I've had better; I found Osawa's fish to be a bit tough and the rice was slightly hard. Again, the black sesame panna cotta was the best thing I've had, and I appreciated that it was complementary for my birthday. Having paid over $109 for an average meal with extremely-slow service wasn't in my plan, but overall, I'm glad I got to try this neighborhood staple.

From the pictures posted, it seem to be the most unique roll and the most popular roll to try. Highly recommend trying this as it has a great flavoring balance between the ingredients and the mango on top. MUST TRY!!!! The cheese bulgogi is also pretty underrated. Although a bit on the expensive side, if you like both combined, this is the dish for you. Love the variation of the dish, and it was also cooked to perfection. The bento box is great as well, presented very nicely, and portion is huge I'd say. A great box to eat on the go or at the restaurant. Not too expensive as well.

The salmon belly nigiri melts in your mouth--it's buttery in the best way. The yellowtail cut roll was fresh and flavorful, and the spicy tuna on crispy rice was a standout. They pile on the tuna, so it's definitely not a one-bite situation, and I loved the added crunch from the fish eggs in it. The spicy tuna hand roll had great flavor too, but I wish the seaweed had a bit more crunch--still, I appreciated the smart little flap at the bottom that kept all the fishy goodness inside. Honestly, every dish we tried was a hit. The vibe, the flavors, and the generous cuts of fish make this place feel extra special. Sushi Karen isn't trying to be flashy--it's just good, honest sushi done really really really well. I'd happily come back again any time (with a reservation, of course).
