It was clear that the chef put a lot of thought into each bite. The ones that stood out the most to my group were the salmon sushi with toasted sesame (the nuttiness of the toasted sesame was incredible), unagi (the eel sauce was the best that I've ever had and I've been to Japan!), and the lobster hand roll. Free Trust Me on your birthday! You have to dine-in twice prior to your birthday and make sure to write down your information on their check-in papers that usually come with your bill. There's a few parking lots that are surrounding the place but they all require payment. I came here on a Wednesday night at 8 p.m. and there wasn't a wait fortunately! We were seated instantly next to two tables and I will say, it's an uncomfortable few seconds (for both parties) squeezing in between to sit down since the tables are so close together. I will say that the restaurant has a dark/intimate ambiance since it's lit by the candles at your table. My table ordered 2 trust me's and 1 nozawa trust me. You're served with a plate of edamame and then each fish one by one. They wait for the entire table to finish eating the plate in front of you before going back to the kitchen to let them know when to prepare to following dish. The fish literally feels like it melts in your mouth. You get a chance to chew but then everything else melts in your mouth. The sushi rice they use is magnificent. When the sushi comes out, the rice is so warm and the fish on top is cold and it's honestly an amazing experience in your mouth. read more

I came in for a Friday lunch/brunch with my son after we were recommended Sugarfish by the Kazunori staff just down the street! No outdoor seating. The host was nice but we were faced with a bit of a wait, she explained that the resturant had just opened but there was already a waitlist of about 30 minutes. Thankfully the host managed to squeeze us in a bit sooner, she had come back out to ask if we were open to taking a seat at the sushi bar. I ordered the Trust Me set and my son ordered the Trust me light, I had wanted to do a subsition for the crab hand roll to salmon but it seems like the waiter missed it, however the host came around to our table and offered to fix the mistake. The waiter, though I can't recall his name dismissed us, I tried to call for him multiple times but he never came back. After looking back at previous reviews (though Im not sure the same employee, simply described him as the waiter with the glasses) I noticed there were others who also had a similar expirence. The host ended up helping me again to explain the fish that came out. From the set menu I enjoyed the albacore the most, though after I tried to ask for the ponzu sauce I was denied more. The only sauce option is the soy that comes on the table. Overall the food was great, my son enjoyed it, the service was very mixed with some being helpful but others walking away. My party of 4 walked in and were seated right away on a Thursday evening. We all did the Trust Me set. I was able to sub out the crab hand roll for a salmon hand roll. My favorites in the set were the tuna and chutoro sashimi, salmon sushi, and toro hand roll. One thing was that the rice was pretty hot which warmed up the sashimi. I've had Sugarfish in the past and the rice was never this hot before. I definitely prefer a more room temperature rice that keeps the sashimi cooler. Sugarfish has been an LA institution since they burst onto the scene a decade ago. This Pasadena location just happened to be nearby and we decided to pop in for a late lunch after visiting the Norton Simon Museum. We parked on a side street but they have parking at the Commons structure and validate too. We walked in and asked for seating for 2 and were shown to the bar. No problem with us. We ordered the Trust Me and Trust Me Lite options, plus one order of unagi nigiri. I also ordered the sustainable sparkling water, which happened to be soda water from their soda dispenser. We were handed plates of edamame which was served cold. My husband is not a fan of soybeans so more for me. Our first plate of tuna and chutoro shashimi was the perfect start to our meal. Then came out the nigiri in rapid succession: tuna, yellowtail, salmon, sea bream, etc. The toro handroll was tasty. His blue crab handroll came out around the same time as my unagi, which was perfect. We loved that the rice was warm and that the fish was thickly sliced. The fish was so fresh! We enjoyed it immensely. Lunch was on my boss since I received a On Me gift card from the company and Sugarfish just happens to be one of the locations listed as a restaurant that accepts it. The Nozawa Trust Me, easily really filling for those that usually eat a lot. Edamame: very standard, lightly cold, lightly salted. Tuna and Chutoro Sashimi: soft paired with soysauce Albacore Sushi, ponzu with chives: My favorite between the three options. Soft and buttery. Salmon Sushi: Fresh and soft. New Zealand Sea Bream Sushi, citrus salt: Little tough and texture is like shrimp. Toro Hand Roll: Warm, seaweed fresh but not crispy. Bluefin Otoro Sushi: Buttery and so so soft. Japanese Yellowtail Sushi, lemon: buttery as well and refreshing tang with lemon. Hirame Sushi, yuzu ponzu: was a bit drenched with ponzu so it was slightly salty and sour than usual. I can't believe I haven't written a review for this location yet. I've been eating Sugarfish for years and the Pasadena one is easily my most visited. Came by on a Wednesday around 8:30pm and there was no wait. The hostess was super friendly and the service was excellent as you'd expect here. We ordered the Trust Me and the Nozawa. Since each nigiri comes with two pieces, me and my girl usually just share both sets so we get a bigger variety. Some standouts for me were the salmon with konbu, the pink lobster, and the anago eel, but honestly every piece was solid. This place is just very consistent and that's why I keep coming back. I recently went to the La Brea location and felt it was a bit lacking, but the Pasadena spot has always been reliable for me. If you've been to Sugarfish you already know what you're getting, clean simple sushi done well every time. Also don't forget to fill out the birthday card at the end. I had Sugarfish delivered and it was delicious. While I prefer dining in to enjoy the warm rice and fresh nori hand rolls, their delivery has been consistently solid and always hits the spot. I ordered the albacore sushi with green onions and ponzu sauce, a few orders of the fresh salmon sushi with toasted sesame, and a lobster cut roll served with soy sauce and wasabi. The albacore with green onions, ponzu, and fresh lemon was perfectly balanced. The salmon with toasted sesame and soy is my favorite here; it's so simple and absolutely delicious. Feels yummy in my body. And the lobster cut roll was a treat with its natural buttery richness. What keeps me coming back is the attention to detail. This was my first time at this location & the ambiance is much smaller than the other locations I've been to. Luckily, the 3 of us didn't have to wait so long. I ordered the "trust me" which is what I usually order & the price is very reasonable. The quality of fish is always fresh & the rice to fish ratio is small & perfect. Plates come out one by one which is helpful for digestion and making room for more (lol) So why 3 stars? Because we waited over an hour on a Thursday evening after we were told it'd be a 15 min wait. I have come here twice in the past month. This has been in my mind to go to since I saw their to go boxes trending online, but I did not expect to be so blown away by the Trust Me tasting menu. There is a bit of a wait, make sure to check in with the host before the dinner rush, I've waited 30 minutes and 1.5 hours the past two visits. Lighting is dim, there is a candle for ambiance for dinner, tables are small but fit one dish and a drink at a time. Onto the food, my pictures do not do these dishes justice but please know as someone who EXCLUSIVELY eats Yama/grocery store or AYCE sushi, the quality AND pricing of this tasting menu is insanely valuable. Tuna and Chutoro Sashimi- 10/10 perfect no notes, maybe my favorite, perfect way to start the sauce is acidic and a little sweet and cuts the fattiness of the fish well. I find it hard to not eat everything as fast as I can and savor the moment Nigiri- overall 9/10, was not a fan of the sesame on the salmon and the yellowtail wasn't exceptionally better than anything I've had before. My favorite thing to order is the 'No Roll Trust Me' with salmon sashimi. I also cant have my meal without a delicious bottle of Nigori Sake. As a big fan of sushi and omakase, I finally got to see the hype of SUGARFISH. A immediate notice is how "chill" it is inside, with a dark oak like exterior, it vibrates similar energy interior as well, not bright nor dark, perfect vibes for a date or special occasion. Only downside is that they don't take reservations, we waited around 30 minutes which wasn't bad as there were plenty of outdoor seatings to wait by. I was recommended the NOZAWA TRUST ME combo as a first timer and it didn't disappoint. Dishes were plentiful, each dish came out in a timely manner and even the edamame which I had bad experiences in other restaurants didn't disappoint at SUGARFISH. Every dish was delicious, I'd say perfect to be fulfilled but not too full, simply perfect. Service was great as the servers were even adamant about us pausing dishes until we're done with the current dish. They were also attentive even when busy. Trying to find parking is a little tough because there are a lot of one ways in pasadena. To find the location is a little confusing too without directions. When you step into the area where the restaurant is located at, it is cute, very modern and chic. There are plenty of tables andchairs outside for some outdoor eating. The colors are very vibrant and has a very calming and relaxing vibe. They do not take reservations so it is a first come first serve and ALL of your party has to be here before you are seated. The inside dining is very small and limited space. We werhye told it was either 50+ minutes or 50+ parties ahead of us when we checked in. It can be $$-$$$ for the meal, so be prepared to spend when dining in. They offered to-go and highly suggested we order (15 minutes) for takeout instead of waiting to be seated. We placed our order, paid, asked for two cups of water as we waited, and sat outside for our order. They also asked if there was any food allergies and i said yes to avocado. Maybe 10 minutes later, someone came out with our food order and gave it to us. The staff members were extremely friendly and was very polite. I have not experienced true sushi from a sushi chef, so I thought the salmon pieces were delectable. My husband said there were some hit and misses because he's had the experience. The fish is good, and he frequently the L.A. location quite a bit. On a different note, the rice under the sushi fell apart. I think we will be ordering takeout instead of dining in. read more

Sugar fish is one of my favorite places to get sushi. The experience and ambiance itself is great. The amazing food is an added bonus. You can never go wrong with any of the tiers of the set menu. If you know what you like, you can also order the lowest tier and add your favorites individual orders. It is very dark so taking pictures is a little hard without flash! For the longest time I wanted to try Sugarfish. My coworkers rave about this spot all the time and I had to try it for myself. It's funny because my mom and I needed to go to William Sonoma and we went around 11am or so. Pretty much right before Sugarfish opened and we noticed the long line as we walked out from William Sonoma. I realized that they were just about to open and I thought this would be the perfect time to try Sugarfish. Once they opened, the line went down super fast. They basically sat everyone who was in line which was cool at first. However, I noticed that because they sat everyone rather than staggering tables, our service was quite slow and our server was nonexistent for the most part. She took our order and wasn't really present during the rest of our stay. We opted for one of the lunch omakase options as they are known for their omakase and I was quite excited. However, it took so long for us to receive our items. The couple who sat after us were receiving items before my mom and I. After we'd receive an item, it would also be a bit of a wait to receive the next item. So there wasn't really a consistent flow from receiving the next item. Don't get me wrong, the sushi was very delicious. However, there wasn't really a "wow" factor. The service wasn't the greatest and I'm not sure if I want to come back. The restaurant itself was very cute and it had a relaxing ambiance to it. SUGARFISH has a simple yet super delicious menu. I came for the Nozawa Trust Me set menu and trust them I did and they delivered. Everything was so good, fresh, and flavored well. It's awesome they even offer it Togo. I have yet to have it Togo myself, but the presentation looks spectacular. Again, everything was good but the crab and toro hand rolls definitely stood out to me. Sugarfish has always been my go-to for good quality sushi. I went back again today and although it was mostly enjoyable, a few of my nigiris were way over-sauced (like the albacore). I read a review about the rice falling apart and that also slightly happened for me too but I still appreciate that the rice is nice and warm compared to other sushi places. I'm a huge fan of Kazu Nori, so the hand rolls are a fav of mine. They're solid and just like Kazu here. I sat at the bar, so it was almost straight to my place from the kitchen! One thing I'm thankful for is that they allow us to exchange the tuna sashimi for salmon. I much prefer the salmon sashimi! Also, for those who don't know, you should sign up for the birthday program! If you go twice a year and fill out that form, you can get a free trust me on your birthday!! That's a GREAT deal. Oh and this location, the parking is sometimes rough. They do have parking for guests, but it's pricey. I'd recommend parking somewhere else and taking a short walk. Service is good, but I think they were a bit understaffed. There was a wait even though there were plenty of open tables. I don't put this against them, it can't be helped, I just wanted to put this as an FYI. Be patient with them! If you're starving, this may not be the place to go to as they tend to bring out items as you complete them (WHICH I LOVE because it gives me time to digest and not overeat like I always tend to do). Ordered: - 2x Nozawa trust me (3.5/5): For omakase advertised at 39 dollars, we felt like it was a bit pricey for what we got. While far from the worst sushi we've had, we felt like some of the nigiri (such as the tuna, albacore, and salmon) were pretty average and didn't meet our expectations. However, we did really like the sea bream, the yellowtail, and hand rolls. One thing we found was divisive was the amount of rice and the stickiness of the rice. The pieces of nigiri with sauce instantly caused the rice to fall apart when picking it up with chopsticks. The sauce also was a bit overpowering for some and completely masked the flavor of the fish. The amount of rice was also a bit too much for the amount of fish we got. Overall (3/5): We arrived to Sugarfish near opening for lunch and didn't have to wait very long before we were promptly seated and order placed. Service was friendly and efficient. The interior isn't very big and don't expect an intimate experience you may get at a more premium omakase establishment - but I was a fan of the decor and vibes of the location. Our first time at Sugarfish @ The Commons in Pasadena was excellent. I am always late to the game having wanting to try the original location on Ventura for many years. We are regulars at Kazu Nori locations so we knew the quality would be on point and that we would not be disappointed. We both ordered the Nozawa Trust Me set ($48) and it was delicious. You get edamame to start followed by tuna & chutoro sashimi in ponzu sauce topped by chives. It was a perfect starter to the meal as I am not much of an edamame person. Next was a trio of nigiri. You get 2 each of albacore, salmon and sea bream. I loved the albacore & salmon. I think the citrus salt on the sea bream was a bit strong for my liking. Either way, it had a strong flavor that I didnt care for. Next was a toro hand roll which was perfection. I noticed that the hand rolls at Sugarfish are a bit fatter/plumper than the ones at Kazu Nori. We like that... a lot. After that was another trio of nigiri. This time you get otoro, japanese yellowtail & hirame. Again you get 2 of each. They were delicious in their own right but the blufin otoro is just so buttery good. It makes for perfect bites. Truly great... and last of the set is the blue crab & dungeness crab hand roll. You cannot go to a Nozawa restaurant without having this legendary roll. It's so good. It's probably my favorite hand roll anywhere. Creamy, crab abundant, perfectly warm rice and crispy fresh nori. Its so good. I could have ordered another roll but since one of the daily specials was anago (sea eel), I had to have it. It's my favorite and most sushi restaurants dont have it. It was so good. Buttery and flaky with just the perfect amount of eel sauce over rice. It was what I wanted. Also ordered as far as drinks was Nozawa super dry sake ($15) and a coke ($4). The first plate of nigiri was different than the second plate - and not because of the different fish but because the rice was warmer the first time which seemed to make it all taste better. The rolls were all good and we definitely enjoyed our meal. Presentation was simple and straightforward. All plates came out promptly which shows how the menu options allow for such efficiency. The kitchen team was churning out all plates in a timely fashion and we never had to wait too long between each course. Ate there yesterday. No waiting -- big score! You wouldn't think this was a family-style restaurant but quite a few tables had well-behaved children. Food came out fast, maybe too fast? Literally no breaks in between plates. Bathroom & dining area was very clean. Didn't smell fishy at all. And new shift leads have things on LOCK. It was my dear friend's birthday. I wanted to treat him to someplace special and he chose SugarFish. I was happy because I've heard stores of the legendary Sushi Nozawa and have been wanting to come here. The place is small, and they don't take reservations. We arrived at 2 pm and were able to get a table. There were only two left. Cameron was our server, and he was a delight. We started with sake while looking over the menu. I like that they have three different "omakase" menu options, which are reasonably priced. (a la carte also available.) I was considering the Trust Me Lite, which was a lot of food for me. My friend suggested we share the Nozawa Trust Me, which was ten tastings for $39. Cameron was kind enough to ask the chef to cut the handrolls for us. The delivery of the dishes was spaced out and we weren't rushed so we could enjoy at our leisure. The quality of the sushi was superb! Everything was fresh & delicious. Good place that offered good valued omakase! Came during a weekend lunch and it was packed. Even for a solo diner, I had to wait for a bit to sit at the bar. I got the second level omakase and it was very filling. The quality of the fish is great for the value as well. This is also a no tipping restaurant but they'll automatically charge 16% for taxes and fees that cover the bill. read more

review is for TO-GO ordered pick up on a friday night. i was concerned about when my order would be ready since you're not able to choose a pick up time and they mention it may take up to an hour during peak hours. the default is ASAP but it did mention eta is 15-25 minutes. after your order confirmation, they send a second email with the pick up time. overall i felt this process was kind of odd, but probably best to not order to-go if you're in a rush. the restaurant is located within a cluster of buildings and street parking was packed (but makes sense given it was a friday night) nozawa to-go (3.5/5): their packaging is very aesthetic and i appreciate how the box lists the cuts they offer and what sauces are suggested. some of the cuts didnt look that fresh however, so it was kind of hard to tell what i was eating. in general, the nigiri wasnt bad but nothing stood out. the tuna was good with the ponzu, but it was slightly fishy without it. the crab handroll was also a little fishy. i do think it's decently priced for the amount however bluefin otoro sushi (2.5/5): kinda disappointing, not buttery like i was expecting and flavor was just ok i was really excited for sugarfish since its always been pretty hyped up, but overall i felt like it was just ok. i'm open to trying it out again, especially in-person, so although i wouldnt suggest getting it again, i wouldnt be opposed if a friend suggested it read more

Actually ate here by accident, we forgot about Mercado not being open until 4pm on Sunday. I noticed SUGARFISH and decided to stop in a finally give it a try as opposed to some of the other options we were thinking of. The staff were so kind from the moment we walked in and maintained that level of service throughout the dining experience. Coming in with a baby always brings about a little anxiety about where to sit and having enough space, and not being in the way. But the staff set up a nice table for us and even brought the shade down. I frequented the old Nazawa's in Studio City and loved it there so much so I was eager to see if the quality of the food would remain. To my surprise the food was just as good as I remember it. Each dish was buttery and fresh. The textures and the flavor profiles were essentially what I remembered it to be. There's always dishes you prefer over others but the meal was delight from start to finish. Really enjoyed my handrolls. Though it isn't the original Nazawa's I frequented many moons ago, it was such a great experience from the food and service we will definitely be returning! read more

I checked the website and apparently the restaurant does not take reservations and guests will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis. I initially put my name down and requested sushi bar seats at 5 PM. The staff said please expect a 45-minute wait and I actually received a notification text at 5:25 PM. However I missed the text and our party ultimately checked in with the host at 5:50 PM. Luckily the staff didn't reset our waitlist order, but our party ended up with a table instead of sushi bar. [Parking]: Parking is $6 for first 2-hours with validation in the adjacent parking structure located behind the shopping center on Shoppers Lane. A secondary option is South Lake Avenue Parking Lot across from Cordova St (90-minute free & additional hour for $2.00 from 10 AM to 7 PM - free outside specified hours). Parking in back makes my car feel safer since sometimes on Lake people may drive a little fast. This place has no reservations. Beautiful spot and Williams Sonoma is there in case you want to wait while shopping. Solid food, every time. You'll love it... raw fish fans only (for the set meals).
