We are super picky about where we eat and we have never ordered a bad dish...the appetizers are amazing - don't miss their signature Sugarbacon - it is to die for! And we always have the House Tator Tots. Two of our favorite entrees include the Scottish Salmon (pictured) and the BBQ Prime Brisket Enchiladas. (If you are there for lunch - the grilled cheese is a MUST). Desserts are the perfect finishing touch - our favorite is the Hot Fudge Brownie with vanilla bean ice cream and peanut brittle for that perfect crunch. They also have a full bar with some of the best selections around. The atmosphere is sophisticated and it is our favorite place to dine in McKinney. I'm rating "five stars, but..." Immediate seating on a Friday night! This was our first time to Sugarbacon and there were four of us. We asked for a round booth (three were open) and we were awkwardly informed by the hostess they were held for larger parties. We enjoyed amazing service from our waitress. She deftly guided us in choosing hand-crafted cocktails, tasty sides and yummy main courses. The ambiance was a little loud, but not too much. The lighting was low overall, while the tabletop was lit perfectly to see our food. The only thing which continues to leave a bitter taste...those cute round booths. One ended up with a party of five crammed into it, another was seated with three women drinking cocktails and each on their smartphone, and a party of four was seated in the one immediately next to us...they had ONE round of drinks and left. We asked the hostess how WE could score a round booth if we came back to Sugarbacon. She looked at us and basically told us she didn't know... (Disappointing.) I've been to this location several times and each time has always been good. It's a great place to grab a drink and dinner when in the McKinney square area. I suggest reservations during dinner times on the weekends because it usually gets fairly crowded. This time around I ordered the fish tacos which were cooked perfectly and my so ordered the pork chop. He thought it was delicious but I'm not a big fan of pork chops so I didn't feel the same way. From start to finish this place was awful! We were greeted by a unwelcoming hostess and then went to the bar while we waited for our seat. After finally getting the bartenders attention he yells from mid bar (like we are in a night club) asking what I need. I shouted my order to him and he replied it will be five minutes. I sat down to wait five minutes for my drink to be made. I waited 15-20 min before going to stand at the bar again. The original bartender ignored me and a woman asked me for my order. I once again ordered my drinks. In two minutes we had our bloody Mary's but a sprite was still missing. We continued to wait for what must be a handmade sprite at this point. Then the original bartender came over to ask what we were waiting for. Finally after three interactions and 30 minutes we had our drinks. After waiting almost an hour for a table and watching a good amount of people leaving I asked the hostess where we were on the list. She said let me get a table bussed and we'll seat you. Two seconds later she said follow me. It was obvious they forgot about us while we sat right in front of her. We ordered our food and once it arrived it was cold. We ordered the eggs Benedict and a starter. The starter never came and the eggs Benedict had no hollandaise sauce. There were never any apologies. We had to ask for everything twice. Had an issue with the Pan Roasted Chicken being too pink and rubbery for me to eat as it was cooked Sous Vide. I wish this was explaned to me before ordering as I'm not comfortable with this process. This is the first time I've ever had to return food at a restaurant, but the waitstaff and manager were very polite about it. And overall I experienced great service. Great atmosphere both inside, on patio and around the restaurant. Food is definitely the star of the show here but drink selections aren't bad. Trendy place so prices are a bit inflated across the board. They offer a decent kids menu and accommodated a healthy side option (which nicely balanced out the included ice cream dessert she got). The apps are great - I've had the sugar bacon (if I recall, it was an odd number of pieces which is often an annoyance of mine) and more recently had to homemade tots - delicious and perfect for sharing with 2 or 4. Entrees and side options to fit any diet or taste bug. Great place to split and get a couple of different tastes if you like to do that. If you're into dessert, maybe save some room because they sounded delicious but I just couldn't do it. read more

Sugarbacon is quite popular on Saturday night. We got here at 6 and knew we should have got reservations. They offer an app to download and you can pre-reserve a seat. The app is the same app that Applebee's uses. The app is a single use then delete on the way out app. Wish more restaurants use it. The wait was about an hour on a Saturday night. We put our names in and downloaded the app. Eventually we actually found a spot at the bar and didn't need our reservations. For starters, we ate their tater tots. They were sweet and crispy. I appreciated how this school side dish was remade for fine dining. The textures made it quite interesting. The sauce made the difference. We came here and ordered the salmon BLT. I had the beef mole. The Salmon BLT was way undercooked. It was almost like eating sushimi. The manager did come by and had it corrected after 10 minutes. After being refired, it met our expectations. The sandwich was delicious and offered great contrasting textures and was well seasoned. The beef mole came with a nice chocolate sauce. The flavor was a bit underwhelming. It had no smoke flavor that I would expect from a brisket smoked on a smoker. All I could taste was the mole sauce. The beef was tender though and had a soft texture. We did enjoy good service from the front of the house and the bartender. It was what shined. The food was inconsistent and had quality issues. I suspect that was from the fact that the kitchen had to withstand repeated duress. The people kept flowing in all the way until 820 when we left. They need to be more careful about sending out raw fish to people. Especially, if my wife is 25 weeks pregnant. I did appreciate that they quickly refired it. I never got an apology from manager which would have been nice. As for the decor, it's a very nicely decorated restaurant. It's very modern and has an Industrial feel with lots of metal surfaces, straight clean lines, and open dining. They offer an indoor outdoor experience. You can dine alfresco and on their patio. This do offer fans that spray you down and keep you cool. If you're looking for. Place for drinks they offer some really interesting and unique ingredients for cocktails. From the bar, one can also watch the game. Overall, I'd try this place again. Sugarbacon offers a unique and interesting experience for downtown McKinney. They offer eats that are not found in the zounds of other kitchens in the area and their service was pretty good that night for being so busy. read more

Me and 5 girlfriends decided to come here for brunch on a Sunday. We made reservations for 11am. Showed up to our reservation and ordered a flight of mimosa which was a choice of 3 different juices (flight style) and a bottle of champagne. After We finished that off at around 1130 we ordered another flight of mimosa and was told they ran out of champagne and the manager had to run to the store to buy more. Okay, so we waited for 30+ min. Decided to order cocktails while we waited. The manager finally showed back up with champagne but a different brand. We know our champagnes and Andre' (what the manager bought) vs Ruffino (what came with our original order) is about a $10 difference. We asked if we could have one more bottle and it be comped for having to wait and it being a cheaper brand than the original bottle. We were told no. $22 for a small amount of juice and a $5 bottle of champagne is ridiculous. We have been to this restaurant when the original owners owned it and it was fabulous! With it being under new management now, I would not recommend. Food was okay. I had the avocado toast and it was good, but my friends ordered the Sugarbacon frittata (which was recommended to them by the waitress) and they said it was okay. First, we didn't know it was even happy hour, but apparently you have to just know that the happy hour specials are for people that sit at the bar, or outside. My Pork sandwich had about the same amount of meat on it as a kids burger from McDonald's, very dry, no sauce I could detect, and overall just bad. I would give last nights visit five stars except that this is an update to our first visit at Sugarbacon and you never forget your first :) The food was good, the atmosphere was fun and elegant. Our waiter was knowledgeable, attentive, and engaging. Special thanks to the General Manager, Ruben Torres for his professionalism and for making our return to Sugarbacon a positive one. He handled our initial negative experience perfectly, and gave us an opportunity to experience Sugarbacon at its finest. I would actually rate the pricing here with three $$$ rather than two. So I'm leaving this review after a very horrible visit. I will say my first visit was great. Loved everything about it, but this visit was pitiful. First off, the bartender might have looked my way 3-4 times the whole night. Standing right in front of me, taking the persons order next to me and he never even glanced at me. And this happened 5-6 times the 75 minutes I was there. My friend and I both would just stare at the bartender waiting on him to take an order but no. He just started talking to other people and the other bartender. We both sat down and knew what we wanted but had to wait 8-10 minutes to even order drinks. I think he made three separate drink orders before taking ours. This was a whole night ordeal. So to skip the rest of his lackluster bar tending, something else even blew my mind even more... After leaving the check in front of me for 12-15 minutes. He stayed at the other end of the bar talking to multiple people and never even looked our way so I got up and went to the manager and asked him to run it because the bartender didn't want to do it. Right there, should be a red flag to the manager but he seemed like it was normal activity. It was a damn Tuesday night. That's ridiculous. The manager brought me back the check and seemed like everything was fine, until I told him I wasn't leaving a tip because the service was horrible. He proceeded to ask me if it was just because of the end of service and I said NO! The whole time there... His face looked absolutely stunned like he had no idea what to say or do and just looked at me with a stupid f'n child face as I walked out. It's really sad, because he food here is very good, but great food doesn't make up for sh*t service. I give it 2 stars only because the food is good. 4.5 star food, 0 star service. read more

The only reason this place is popular is because there isn't anything close to the atmosphere here in McKinney. While we enjoyed the atmosphere and drinks, the food was a huge letdown (and expensive for the quality of ingredients used...which was not unique). I got the shrimp and grits and the banana foster pudding thing. Was disappointed with both. I didn't feel as though the shrimp was fresh, and the grits almost tasted they used instant grits (the texture, the taste was fine). I expected higher quality ingredients given the price tag. The banana fosters pudding thing came in a cute Pinterest-y mason jar, but the taste was just not there. It was very ok. We ended up spending around $70 for two people, which is what we would've spent in Dallas for way better food. DO NOT GIVE THIS PLACE YOUR BUSINESS We have been coming here since it opened. We have always sat at the bar and had great bar experiences. However, this experience was the prime definition of awful. We came for NYE with reservations that were made at the recommendation of the bar staff. We sat at a table and we were served by a pretty good server. We ordered from a pre-set menu. The lobster bisque was under-seasoned and overly fishy. My steak was chili rubbed with what I believe may have been all of the chili available in the kitchen. The steak was overcooked and the scallop potatoes were slimy and flaccid. The dessert trio was lack luster, the apples also flaccid and weird, the key lime atomically tart, and the chocolate pie was so dense and rich that it was inedible. All of the food felt pre-prepared and the warmed up. The server could tell that we didn't like our food, but we didn't want to complain. She continued to push to see what was wrong, so we told her. We insisted that she did not bring her manager to the table and asked for the check. Then, the manager came to the table. He did not introduce himself and simply said "what's the problem". So we told him in a very uncomfortable and defensive atmosphere as he stood over us glaring with his arms folded. I made an inappropriate comment stating that the apple reminded me of a flaccid penis and the guy came unglued. I promptly reminded him that we never asked for him to come to our table and specifically asked that didn't. This guy made my wife cry at the table in public on New Years Eve. By far, he is the most arrogant person I have ever encountered. He reminded me of my alcoholic father. If you read other 1 star reviews about this place, you will see that in many of them customers have had similar encounters with this jerk. It's a shame that he will solely run this place out of McKinney. Visit Rye or Harvest instead. Always amazing service, food, and atmosphere. Consistently. This restaurant has driven me to Yelp. I've always used Yelp for recommendations but this is the first time that I have felt a real need to let someone else know. I really want this restaurant to survive and with the poor food and pricing options it won't last long in McKinney. Long story less long here is my take... Service/Atmosphere is a 4/5 stars. We really enjoy having this restaurant in downtown McKinney because the town needs more of it! We are mid-30's and love great restaurants and are tired of driving to Whiskey Cake/Mexican Sugar/Uptown to get it. Food 1 stars. The owners/managers must know that their food is sub par and way over priced but it's busy right now so it doesn't register yet. The "Sugar Bacon" appetizer tastes like something frozen from Costco with a lot of BBQ sauce topped on it. We have eaten the shrimp and grits, burger, pork chops, salad and none of it was good. Price 2 stars: To top off the bad food it was way over priced. We are from the Northeast and enjoy spending money on great restaurants in NY/DC. However, walking away from Sugar Bacon felt like I just spent $70 on a meal from Cheddars with a great atmosphere. Overall I was unfortunately disappointed with Sugarbacon. My husband and I came in for lunch. I was made aware it was a soft opening, and with new restaurants I always try to give them the benefit of the doubt...however, there was no desire from the owner to make our experience any better or apologize. Jacqueline was our server. She was very sweet. I ordered a glass of wine and my husband received a great beer recommendation. When I received my glass of wine the pour was very small. Had to have been 3-4 oz. tops. (I pour wine for a living at my work and I have a pretty good idea of pour sizes) We were prepared with our appetizer order as well as our entrées, so we ordered all three. About 20 min. later our entrees came out without our app. The server went to figure out what happened and then told us the kitchen had lost our ticket for the app but it would be out ASAP. No big deal, these things happen. My husband had the chicken entree and it was perfect! I had the fish sandwich and unfortunately my sandwich and fries were not hot, but lukewarm. The appetizer came out for dessert so we just boxed it up for later (hummus was very yummy) and paid our bill. The owner came to ask us how our experience was. My husband said it was okay, and the owner wanted to know what had happened. I politely started to tell him our grievances and all the while let him know I worked in a restaurant and didn't like to complain, even layering compliments in. He was very dismissive and even cut me off before I even discussed the appetizer situation. I could tell he was not interested in feedback...from us, anyway. Love the place, who ever designed this place did a great job! However the food does not match the delicious ambiance. Upon arrival to our table the smells of "fishy" permitted the air. I ignored the smell because of how nice everything looked, "Shirley a place of this elegance would not disrespect their seafood", I said to myself. The menu prices were "up their" so I felt good about eating here: Sugar bacon app was tasty but impossible to eat. The crustini crumbled in my mouth and the BBQ sauce got all over my face because the belly was cut in a 2 bite square. This made the fat string into my teeth and I sat at the table for the remainder of our entire experience picking at my teeth trying to un-wedge the fat stuck between them. The spicy jalapeño drink was light on alcohol and virtually no spice. It was good but went down like limeade. There goes $10. My wife was able to get 2 drinks during our experience because the effects from the first was non existent, there goes $23. (She drank 2 drinks over dinner and dessert, not right away...haha) Right away our dinner came out and I was able to pinpoint that "fishy" smell as my scallops arrived in front of me. The very small plate of 3 - 1" scallops sat I front of me and I looked at my wife's plate and she got a very small 2 1/2" by 2" short rib, Wow! We both looked at each other and sighed. Those 2 plates were $60. Let's talk about my scallops. Fishy, rubbery, small with a hint of sand. Shame shame I say!!! This type of thing is unforgivable, too many mistakes in one dish. Not to mention the greens on the plate overpowered the scallops. The low quality scallops were even overpowered by the heap of corn sat below the scallops. $150 including tip, for 2. I ordered a chicken & kale salad with goat cheese, pumpkin seeds & cranberries. So disappointed. I could have made this at home. And it turned my stomach into knots, which I wouldn't have had cooking it myself. Bad choice. My spouse's burger with sugar bacon was hilariously cooked. It was thin and brown on one side to thick and pink on the other, so uneven. I have never seen a burger cooked so carelessly before. Our friends got a grilled cheese and mentioned too much pesto it was overwhelming and didn't finish it. The fries were so pale they were unappetizing. The short rib was good, a touch fatty, but I ate most of it. Potatoes were dry. My wife had the roasted chicken and she commented the best part of the dish was the Brussels sprouts. Chicken was dry and she didn't eat much of it. The managers were wonderful in their apologies and willingness to make things right if possible, thus the 3rd star in the rating as opposed to just 2.
