I'm sad to say something has changed! I'm not sure if there is a new baker or a new recipe BUT the doughnuts are not their usual light fluffy buttery dough. Best donut place in Charlotte. There are a lot of great options in this city, so that's saying something. They make the big "bready" type of donuts with perfect texture. The Boston cream is my go-to. Every time I find myself in south charlotte, the thought crosses my mind that I need to make a pit-stop here. The great thing about Sugar Donuts is that their donuts are DELICIOUS and hand made. They sell them until they run out (which usually is the case) so I'm always driving down here with the worry that I waited too late in the day that all the donuts are gone. They also make Vegan donuts for our friends that are vegan. The shop itself is small with a long bench that provides half the seating for the handful (4-5?) bistro tables. I would say this place is more equipped for carryout, rather than large groups, but I've enjoyed a quiet cup of joe and a donut here before. These donuts are inbetween....so denser than a Krispy Kreme, but lighter than a Duck Donut. They've got rotating flavors and specials, but they also have their flagships. read more

I have never met a privately owned donut shop that I didn't like. So why has it taken me so long to finally try this one, despite it being located a mere stone's throw from our house? Good question. Maybe I found the name itself, Sugar Donuts, redundant. Does it mean that they have extra sugar and do I really need to be reminded of that? Hey I already know they're bad for me! Regardless, my fellow Yelpers had too many great things to say for me to stay away forever... So, at a weak moment on a Friday morning, I popped in and picked a pair. First of all, they are huge and run $28 for dozen and $15 for a half dozen, which is about twice as expensive as the big chains, but appropriate based on quality and quantity. Out of a dozen or so different choices, I chose everyone's favorite these days, the trendy maple bacon donut, and the standard plain frosted which they call Vanilla Bean. I enjoyed both as each had its own charm; however, as a bacon donut fan, theirs is my least favorite of the five or so I've had elsewhere (such as Duck and Rise). About the size and shape of half a softball, it is more like a big honey bun that a donut, which for me, meant too much bread and the bacon itself was just too fatty and sat precariously atop in what looked like globs. In fairness, I need mention that none of this offended me so badly that I didn't polish of the entire thing (including the crumbs) and I have every intention of returning for more research.
