I can't believe I haven't filled out a review for Sugar Beach! This is a hidden gem. Though it's located in a main thoroughfare, not many people stop by here. We've gone to Maui at least a dozen times, and this place is always a go-to for us. There are never many people, and the wake is family-friendly. I would recommend bringing an umbrella because there's not much shade, and it can get pretty hot. There's some parking, but it is probably limited to 20-25 cars (some disabled parking available). Please keep in mind that there are no restrooms. If you're looking for a place to hang out that is not busy, this will most likely be a good experience for you. read more

We went to this beach on our first day in Maui. It was a very calm and quiet beach however a little windy. When looking for a location, you can search Sugar Beach events center or 12 South Kihei Rd. The parking lot is limited, you take the sidewalk to the beach access on the left. We chose the location directly behind the Sugar Beach events center in between Palm trees for the best shade. The sand was so soft. It was great to walk along the beach and very minimal people in the water. Our family loved it here that first day! read more

There are a lot of things to love about this beach. It's very long, soft sand, not crowded at all, peaceful. There is very calm, clear water and it is shallow for quite a ways out. Still get some small waves near the shore. The incredible silhouette of Kaho'olawe on the horizon coming out of the water. The beach itself is not steep going to the water so the waves come ashore gently and for a long distance which I thought was unique and cool. The distance from the grass to the water can be quite short which to me is neither a positive or negative. It was quite windy the day we went but due to the short distance of grass to water, no sand was flying around so another plus - the wind also helped keep us cool. I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, this beach does not have any sugar. If you are expecting sugar than go to the spa. It's beautiful beach but parking is along the road. It's hard and tricky to find a spot. Not a great beach for kids. It's next to the sugar resort. And no shade available. read more

Great beach, easy parking, does not seem super crowded. Spence of real hours here across two days and it was easy to find, the sand felt sugary actually underneath your feet, and the waves were easy to navigate. A favorite beach 4 R&R & usually very few people during the week! I luv resting here after a long bike ride to Maalaea!! It's great for picnic & long walks or jogs on the beach.... It's one of the longest beaches on Maui!! The later afternoons can get quite windy due to being in the Valley! I also enjoy watch the planes do their turn around overhead before they head towards Kahului for landing! A note of caution: Watch for large thorns around the trees along road side & under trees! They really hurt & some r quite large! Towards the middle of the long stretch of beach there is quite a rocky ledge and a little dangerous getting in & out of the water there; but that area is usually the most desolate!! The northern part of the beach gets more trade winds in the late afternoons. Another issue is most parking is roadside and can be hard to find on Holidays! Try the nice boardwalk & natural bird habitat & viewing area! There is a small parking lot there which is convenient. Overall Sugar Beach is very relaxing & usually sunny all year! read more

"Sugar Beach" is the unofficial name of the beach that spans the width of Maalaea Bay along north Kihei Road and the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. It's a long, narrow beach with calm waters and awesome sunsets. The only downfall is that there are no restroom facilities. The $277.00 per night advertised price for our unit jumped to $464.00 per night after the resort added all of their fees and taxes. Our Unit #215 and the Resort in general are quickly approaching the end of their useful life. Our unit needs a $100K renovation to justify the $500.00 rate. It is conceivable that the entire resort will one day be razed and a new complex built. The site that it sits on is wonderful I must admit. read more

If you are looking for a quite secluded beach with a view and silky sand, you have found it. However... Not the best place to swim or snorkel. I would head farther east to the resort beaches which are also free and public...they have clearer water with larger beaches and you can snorkel or boogie board or stand up paddle board on them... however, it is not bad either. Sugar beach is behind the is sanctuary. Fine sand clear waters - it was the last beach we went to during our stay and we LOVED it. It wasn't crowded and you can walk to the rocks and see marine life in the tide pools. Lots of sea cucumbers, small fish and sea urchins. Great spot to hang out. I really enjoyed sugar beach. We stayed in a condo in Kihei and it was the perfect swimming beach. It has mostly calm waters and is a great place to swim, snorkel, SUP or even just relax. The sand is soft and clean and the water has good visibility. You can see boats that are anchored out past the reef as well as many canoe clubs rowing in the morning. Sugar Beach is the long stretch of beach located between Ma'alaea Wharf and the north end of Kihei. A large portion of the beach is located next to the Kealia Wildlife Preserve where a large variety of Hawaiian bird life nest. Be aware you aren't supposed to drive in the preserve. The sand is also very loose in this area, easy to get a car stuck. The beach is long and wide, good for jogging. Just off shore the bottom is sand, sloping fairly quickly to 25 or 35 feet. There is a reef out there, but you have to swim pretty far out to get to it. Visibility is not the best, so this beach is not high on the list for snorkeling. Usually the water has very little current, even when the wind comes up, which it does most every afternoon, so this is a good beach for children to swim. There's a beach access point with a small public parking area adjacent to the Ma'alaea condo buildings. This section of the beach is quiet and peaceful, with a great view of Haleakala and South Maui. Trees provide some welcome shade. read more

It's nice that there aren't many people here. I like that this is a little less developed than other beaches. I found the boogie boarding here to be great, especially in the afternoon when the trade winds pickup. Lots of great waves parallel to the beach, and no rocks. Be aware, the wind is two fold. While it is great for waves, it will also blow your beach chair away ;). Plan accordingly. Also, no showers and limited parking, not the end of the world, but just be aware. read more

We spent a week in one of the residences - 2 adults and 3 teens. The location and views from our accommodations were amazing. If you want seclusion, ocean, breezes, and sky, it is difficult to imagine a place that beats it, unless you are Bezos and can go anywhere. You can do nothing or do everything. Some in are party hiked the (easy) Piton and other activities. Others were content to lounge in the infinity pool at the residence. The food was fine, in the range of typical resort food. This is by no means a knock on Sugar Beach (and we did not dine in their high-end restaurant). We have been to many resorts and the food is typically okay. It is the nature of the business model and diversity of clientele. You can have a special meal prepared in your room or prepared and delivered to your room (which we did and it was excellent). However, to address most meals, we booked accommodations with a full kitchen so we did not have to rely on the resort (and because I like to cook). More importantly, service was impeccable throughout the island, led by our butler. Even my teen commented on the service and the nature of interactions in comparison to other places visited, and teens comment on nothing positively. In short, I loved this place and the people we met. i would definitely return. read more

This is not the most scenic beach on Maui. But I'd give it an overall five stars. The location of the Sugar Beach is pretty darn perfect if you want to see a lot of different parts of Maui. If you'd prefer to stay at you're hotel and enjoy the beach, stay at Wailea or Kaanapali. They have a lot of beach front apartments that we couldn't afford in other parts of Maui. And the unit that we're in -525- is pretty darn close to perfect. I get the sense the owners try really hard to make sure you have absolutely everything there. Beach chairs, towels, coolers, yes. But a fishing rod, a kitchen as well stocked with pans and condiments as my own, a great stereo, two tvs, tons of storage, a washer and dryer in the unit, extra pillows, great outdoor lanai furniture for outdoor dining, it goes on and on. I've stayed in so many condos in Maui and I am beyond impressed. My one aside would be do some research on the unit you're staying in at Sugar Beach. They're all owned by different people and managed by different companies and I've heard the quality and cleanliness varies a lot. But two thum bs up for Sugar Beach Unit #525! read more

This is definitely one of my favorite walks on Maui. It is easy to go north for miles and end up with a good space from the next group. Not quiet a secluded beach. But if you are wiling to walk for a little while, it is not hard to leave the crowds behind. The sand is fine and the view is beautiful. Can be pretty windy at times. read more

My grandma asked me to go to Costco and pick up a bunch of brown sugar for her baked goods. She gave me some bucks and I really meant to go but there was this sweet party at Robbie's house that night. I ended up blowing the dollars on some Boone's Strawberry Hills and then I was a little bit buzzed when my friends told me about the beach made out of sugar. At first I really didn't believe them because the ocean is usually salty and the beach is brown, but they proved it to me by showing me the sugar factory. I got Gram's a whole bunch of brown sugar and she's been baking away. I don't want to tell her that she's not good at cookies anymore because she has the dementia and my Pops says she gets confused, but, man, her cookies taste like crap. Anyways, the sugar beach is a deal. I took a star away because you have to bring your own package. read more

I love this beach. If you're careful you can find some really cool shells. The beach is never crowded. When I walk from the wharf to Kehei and back, my Fitbit shows about 6 miles. But I rarely walk in on a straight path. . Give it a try but don't tell anyone else or it will get really crowded. read more

We stayed there last March, 2011. Warning, the condos are owned by individual owners and ours was a throwback to the 80's. Rattan everywhere. The couch was a hidebed and the mattress you couldn't sleep on. My suggestion to the owner is get new furniture. The combination lock worked half the time and we were constantly frustrated getting into our condo. The grounds are nice and the pool is great. The beach is good for walking and jogging only. The water is not clear and there are huge rocks about 30 feet out that could really hurt somebody. If the tide was out you do not know they are there. Scary! The best beaches for swimming and boogey boarding is down the road at Kamole Beach I and II. I am going to stay toward that direction next time. You can get a decent condo at Sugar Beach Resort with updated furnishings and more ammenities. You just have to do careful research. Most of them have the ugly outdated and in our case not very clean Rattan furniture in the rooms. The kitchen was well equipped I must say. Good part! We covered the furniture with sheets and towels because we did not feel comfortable sitting on them. read more
