I used to come to Charley Young Beach a lot when I first moved back home to Maui. We shifted to more kid friendly spots after having a little one, but we recently visited again following what seems like years. The path that we usually take, just past/behind the showers -- I don't remember the drop off from the rocks to the beach being as high? Is it me or has the beach eroded away quite a bit? The path down to the left, before the showers seems to be the better route, especially if you're carrying a bunch of things. It's still a nice beach and we prefer it over the more popular Kamaole Beaches. There's some spots that are a bit more tucked away in the rocks and it's not as crowded here. There are limited parking spots near the entrance, but there's a nice big parking lot along S. Kihei Road that has a number of stalls. We usually just park at the lot and walk down. There's also shower stalls and some porta pottys at the top. Overall, it's a great beach and now that our son is older, we can bring him here more often especially when he wants to catch some waves bodyboarding. read more

In honor of Yelp's month-long celebration of Earth Day (where they're encouraging reviews of beautiful nature spots and sustainable, eco-friendly businesses), this review is long overdue for Charley Young Beach. I was lucky enough to return to Kihei for a couple weeks last month, and our rental was within walking distance to this great little spot. Charley Young Beach is just north of Kamaole I Beach Park. The 2 beaches are connected, and you can't really tell where one ends and the other begins, so it's like one long, beautiful, white-sand beach! If you're driving in, you can park at Kamaole I and walk north on the beach, or there's a parking lot right off of S. Kihei Rd & Kaiau Pl. The small entrance at the end of Kaiau Pl. has a shower and an unfortunate porta-potty (better public restrooms are located down the beach at Kamaole I Beach Park...you're welcome lol). The north most side of the beach is rocky, and is great if you're looking to see tide pools, while heading south on the beach will lead you to a wide sandy beach, perfect for working on your Hawaiian tan or taking a dip in the ocean! *If you see a Honu (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle) resting on the beach, please remember to respect the marine life and stay at least 10 feet away. A fairly quiet and smaller beach next to Kamaole 1, Charley Young boasts a few nooks for shade to post your beach chairs and blankets. There's a decently sized parking lot that fits at least 20 cars if you follow the location on Google Maps and is a 2-3min walk from the beach itself. The water is fairly calm even on a windier day, and though it's comparatively not as good for snorkeling, it's a family friendly beach, especially for paddle boarders. I'd recommend this beach for those who want a chill, lounging beach day. read more

My husband and I were driving down to Kihei and Wailea, and wanted to check out one of their beaches. This was featured in the Snorkel Store map, and had pretty nice views from the pictures. Parking was super easy here (as all beaches in Maui actually from our experience), in the afternoon specifically, and free. We walked just a block down, and also down a narrow path of steps to get to this beach. This Charley Young Beach is vast, with lots of space for lots of people. There was definitely enough room for us, even in the late afternoon. The only things I wasn't too fond about for this beach were that I couldn't find any bathrooms, and it was quite windy the time we were there (perhaps it was just an off day?). Our beach umbrella, and other guests too, kept having to be adjusted every 5-10 mins - so frustrating! And the no bathrooms thing - huge annoyance. Not bad for a beach though, if you are staying closeby, and don't need to use the restroom lol. read more

Very nice beach in Kihei. There is shade near the northern end by the stairs under the trees. They also have a porta potty set up on the street above the beach. Overall, the surf is gentle (unless its a windy day). The bottom is mostly sandy. You can see sea turtles along the shore. There are lots of places to get lunch along Kihei rd nearby. Very nice public beach access! It's a tad bit of a "hike", but a well maintained concrete walkway w/ stair access & railing. It's kind of difficult to tote a wagon or stroller down, but possible! Just a short walk across the street from a row of rental condos. It isn't overcrowded at all. Patrons are plenty but all there for the same reason: friendly, fun relaxation! The sands are pristine- super soft & easy to walk. The tide is calm. Perfect for swimming, but decent enough for some boogie boarding. There are many we see kayaking, paddle boarding & lap swimming. Sandcastles can be seen frequently- there are some "dugout" areas that are perfect for planting your day camp. You don't have to worry about anything- just sit back & maybe watch a game of volleyball take place! In the evenings is no different... there are some late night volleyball parties & fishing. It's always fun watching the boats, too. This is one of our favorites because of how pristine & casual it is. There's a shower station at the top of the access where food trucks will also frequently park if you happen to need a snack or cold beverage. Overall it is just gorgeous & that pure, blue water with perfect sands to indulge. We wade in & just bob in the waves for hours... then go lay out to dry off. My nephew is in heaven with the umbrella tent building sand castles- what more can you ask for?! read more

We arrived around 9 am on a weekday and had to find parking on the street. Luckily, we were able to find parking close to the beach. When we got to the beach, it was not crowded at all, The beach was clean. The water was nice and warm. Was going to snorkel, but the waves were strong and it was windy. Very clean beach. If you arrive early in the morning, there are not too many people and you can score a nice spot near one of the large rocks for better shade. Water is warm and waves are subtle. It seems like a good spot for fishing as there are plenty of fishing rods set to the North of the beach. There is one portable bathroom. Limited parking so ride a moped or bike if possible. No lifeguard on duty. read more

Quieter beach right outside our condo! Only some rocks as you enter the water, overall really nice! We were able to walk down from our Airbnb which was really convenient. Sand is really hot as the temperature gets up there. Bring towels to lay on and dry off if you can! Beautiful palm trees surround this beach and you can see neighboring islands. Made a stop here in the middle of the day. There is a small parking lot maybe 50-100 feet from the entrance. It was hard to tell the parking lot was for the beach because all the signs in the parking lot are bleached from the sun. There was plenty of parking! Walking down to the beach took less than 2 minutes (including the short stairs down). The beach wasn't super crowded. There is very little shade though. Charley Young Beach is one of my favorite beaches that i've visited on Maui! Lucky enough, the place I was staying was right across the street from this beach. The best beach times are definitely in the morning or close to sunset, because in the afternoon, the wind gets much stronger. We spent a lot of time on Charley Young tanning, playing in the waves, and watching the sunset. We were even so fortunate to see a turtle on a random day, swimming among us! One of my goals of this trip was to see a turtle, so this was definitely a highlight for me. Definitely give this beach a visit if you are in the area. read more

A really good, family friendly beach with not many people, generally easy waves, boogie boarding, and some ok snorkeling in front around the rocks on the north side. There seem to be mites or algae nettles in the water here though, because a few of us complained about stings and itches after short swims here each of the 3 days we've been to this beach. We washed our swim clothes with vinegar afterwards to make sure whatever it was was neutralized. read more

Charley Young Beach is a beautiful spot which abuts, and is north of, Kamaole I beach. It's one of the more secluded beaches in Kihea, with lots of little coves amongst the lava rocks at the north tip. Nice scenic spot to hang out and swim, or watch the sunset. Turtles nest in this area. They are protected, so if you see one, keep 10-15 feet distance from it. There's a local artist, Dale Zarrella, who has created wood sculptures here, at the Fairmont Hotel, and elsewhere. We were having a meal at Miso Phat in Kihea, and he happened to be sitting next to us at the sushi bar, and struck up a conversation. It's beach was recommended to us by our Airbnb hosts. It was a short walk from a nearby (small) parking lot. Showers are at the top of a flight of stairs. The beach was not too crowded and we easily found a place to drop our gear before venturing into the water. My kids enjoyed the water and spent some time making sand castles. It's not a huge beach but it's very spacious and a number of people were there. Several people brought their dogs to the beach as well. There was a volleyball court set up although I didn't see anyone playing on it while we were there. I overheard some people mentioning that they saw turtles in the water although I didn't see any myself. We've been there twice already with the kiddos and are preparing to head over there again. read more

What a great beach! Super family-friendly and just beautiful. My family and I had a great time here. There's not a ton of shade but it seems like most people know that. While we were there the water is perfect. Not to choppy or strong. There is a small parking lot closer to the Main Street but I also noticed a lot of people parking on the side street just near the staircase going down.l to the sand. Charley young was right across the street from our condo. It's kind of a hidden gem as there aren't as many crowds of tourists here. You get more space. Usually calm, warm waters in early mornings before 10AM. Great for swimming. Clear waters. The floor is mostly soft sand, no rocks to cut your feet. The winds and waves can pick up in the afternoon. It got so windy sometimes that the wind was blowing the sand so hard that it pelted my legs into hives. Nice to watch a sunset here. There is a little shower to rinse off. read more

This beach was right across the street from the place we were staying at in maui but it had everything we needed in a beach. Apparently, the morning is great for stand up paddle boarding as the sea becomes flat like glass. If you need, there is boss frogs and other places across the street from the beach which rent SUP and snorkel gear. The winds do pick up in the afternoon but the waves don't get too tumultuous. We spent hours sunbathing on the great Sandy beach. The sand was so soft and smooth! And when we got too hot, the water is great for dipping in. You can bring a chair to read in while overlooking the beach or go for a nice stroll along the beach. Across the street on Alanui Ke Ali'i is a great food truck... Kinaole Grill. I highly recommend them! There is also showers to rinse off your Sandy feet and also a lifeguard on duty for novice swimmers. read more

Quiet beach at sunrise. This little beach was located just a block across the street from our hotel. Very clean and quiet and serene in the morning. Lots of friendly people taking a stroll. We also came later in the day when it was warmer. We walked up near the rocks to claim our spot on the beach. We had a lot of space to sit down unlike the area near the parking. However, in this area few homeless were sleeping nearby and one was wandering completely dressed in Glad garbage bags? This was disturbing- it was sad to see someone in this condition. The highlight of our trip was when I was screaming at my kids and husband to get out of the water because a super long dark shadow was swimming towards them and they were in three-feet of water. When my husband saw the shadow swimming along the shoreline...he saw that I was not just "Crying Shark". Thankfully it turned out to be a GIANT sea turtle. My husband said he heard there have been some recent Mako shark attacks on the island so I was on high alert. It was a windy late afternoon and signs were posted to warn about the rough water. Overall I'd recommend staying near the main entrance of the beach by the parking. read more

Here's why: *lots of parking just off of South Kihei *a shower to pre-wash or post-rinse *lots of space to really spread out *close to gas stations if you need a quick snack run *Awesome clear water *lots of super hot Kihei sand *some shade but it gets taken up quick *great place to walk, run, swim, sleep, make sand castles or play with your kid This is a great family beach located in central Kihei. I've seen turtles pop up from time to time. There is no bathrooms on site, which is the only bummer--but the gas station across from Kam1 is not too far. If you are looking for a great place to take the family, or a nice place to grab a swim and some time with a book, this beach is the perfect spot. read more

We lived walking distance to Charley Young. The street even had a traffic slow/stop for crossing the street. A COLD water shower to rinse on/off. Lots of space, not ever crowded, and water is clear. Watched the sun raise and sun set many of our 7 days there. Love it! read more

Paradise Found. Charley Young Beach was conveniently located right across the street from our condo we were staying at for the weekend. Ideal place to go for a swim in the ocean. The water was a refreshing temperature and clear enough to see little fish swimming by. Perfect combination of the hot sun on your back and the cool water on your feet. The waves weren't too big so this would be perfect for families with young children to go to and play in the water. Great place to go for a morning jog, read a book, or just enjoy the sounds of the crashing waves. There is an outdoor shower you can rinse off the salt water after taking a dip I suggest coming here during sunset. The sky turns into a cotton candy mix of purple and pink. Just an awesome sight to see. And if that wasn't enough, in the distance we were able to see whales breaching and flapping their tales. Just doesn't get any better than this. read more

This is a spectacular beach! Easy access. Not crowded. Friendly lifeguard. Lots of sand gently transitioning to lightly rolling surf. We spent hours bobbing in the waves, building in the sand, playing catch, and just walking up and down with the water lapping in around our ankles. Other beaches on Maui are lovely but we had a hard time finding any better than Charley Young. Lots of food options within easy walking distance including what I consider the best shaved ice on Maui - "S&Q" just across the street. One caveat. Not good for snorkeling. We went to Ka'anapali for that (best snorkeling from the shore IMHO). Also tried snorkeling at Mackena but the intensity of the surf put us off. Ditto for Black Sands. read more

This is a great beach! It was never too crowded. The sand is very nice. I saw dolphins swimming near shore one day. The swimming is nice with the rolling waves coming in. Just bobbing in the waves was good enough for me. Best of all were the sunsets. They were amazing with the color show each evening. At the northern tip on Kam I beach, you can get there either by walking north from Kan I or parking in the lot near Charley Young Beach and walking two minutes to the beach. Excellent beach, but not much different than Kam III. Different views, maybe calmer waves, and a bit less crowded since it's past the stretch of private residences north of Kam I. If you're driving to the beach and not looking for the biggest waves, I'd recommend this one. read more
