Funny, most reviewers went to this beach (ranked #4 on #41 things to do in Kihei by a popular website that advises people on trips) because it's next to their condo. In my case, I reviewed beaches and got my lodging near "Kam 3", which was among the highest rated by locals and tourists for being accessible (walking distance from lodging), safe*, pretty (turtles, sunset), and best for boogie-boarding. *"Safe" meaning they have lifeguards, but you still have to worry about rip currents, rough surf, undertow, a few protruding lava rocks, and sharks, not in that order. read more

This is a very nice beach area. It has a nice sized parking area but also some street parking. There are lots of shaded picnic tables, a bathroom and shower and play equipment. This small beach area has a lifeguard depending on weather and tides pretty nice swimming and snorkeling. There is a huge lawn that has no trees but is good for bocci ball, or setting up chairs to watch the sunset. This park is super popular on the weekends with lots of family get togethers so you might want to visit during the week if you don't like big crowds. read more

Great local beach that has ok snorkeling available. We usually see turtles each time we snorkel. The waves get bigger in the evening and the water clarity can be poor if the waves are rolling in. I do love this beach though. The grass field between the beach and the road is one of the best places on the island to watch the sunset. read more

Brown powdered sugar. That how I would describe this wonderfully soft and fine sand that lines this beach. The surf is normally calm here which makes it fairly kid friendly. The middle of the beach has the largest stretch without rocks if you want to boogie board. There are several smaller sections to go to if you just wanna snorkel or swim. My son and I saw a sea turtle swim right by our legs just a few feet from shore. This was an amazing sight! Showers and restrooms right in the park. This beach has it all. read more

Known to locals as "Kam 3", Kamaole Beach Park III is the largest of the three beach parks that are lined up in a row along South Kihei Road. The beach is parallel to condos so don't expect to find restaurants or convenience stores within walking distance. Numerous parties, get-togethers and family and class reunions have been held here due to the spacious footprint. PARKING: Free parking in the lot is limited as is street parking. Because of the park's size and location of the parking lot, expect a good walk to the beach and other areas. THE PARK: The expansive grassy area is set high above the beach so views of the ocean, West Maui Mountains, Kaho'olawe, Molokini and Lana'i are excellent. Grills, picnic tables, restrooms and showers are available. There are a few shady spots under big trees but the majority of the area is unprotected, rolling hills. A sand volleyball court was/is available on the north end. Most of the time the ocean is a little rough with big waves that break close to shore, so snorkeling is not recommended. The beach is yellow sand with a few rocky lava jetty points so photographs at sunset can be killer and fishing is probably good. Lifeguards are on duty. SHARKS: Yes, they live in the ocean after all and you're entering their home. But, there have been an increase in sightings and attacks in the Kihei area so be forewarned. OVERALL: Great for picnicking, adequate for beaching. read more

Our family just spent a beautiful morning at this beach! The sand was soft with enough rocks and shells to make the kids happy, we all enjoyed the perfect waves for boogie boarding, and I had at least ten turtle sightings! We will definitely visit again before leaving Maui! read more

I wanted to go to this beach first thing this morning based on a recommendation from a nice waitress at Peggy Sue's. However, my husband was convinced there was better snorkeling on the north side of the island. We got there and the waves were way too rough to get in the water. We made our trek back here and realized we should've stopped here first thing. The water is the perfect depth for kids to go in far and enjoy the waves. The beach space is large! There is also a swing set and a lifeguard. Public bathrooms are available as well as a rinse off area. The other day we saw a couple sea turtles swimming in the water. No turtle spotted today, but my husband did see lots of colorful fish, including a few good size ones, while snorkeling off the beach. And of course, there's always a few good whales to watch. This beach is directly across from our condo. There are restrooms and life guards. The water was really calm which makes it a great location for families. There are reefs which attract turtles - we see them daily! Please do not toUch the turtles, and give them space. Of the 3 Kamaola Beaches along South Kihei Road, this is the nicest and the largest. This beach has a park with grass (for those who just want to lay out a blanket and sit down and watch the sunrise and/ or sunset, instead of sitting on the beach) with barbecue pits, picnic tables, a small playground, restrooms (and an outdoor shower to rinse off the sand and salt water). There are also a few trees around to provide plenty shade. When we visited this beach, we saw 2 separate families having a party (which I can see how this park would be so popular for parties). Take the steps down to the beach, which is nice as well. The sand is clean and the waters are calm for the most part. While my husband and I visited this beach, we saw a few people down by the rocky cove happily excited when they saw a sea turtle. If you are this side of the island, consider making a stop by this beach and relax. By the way, there is a parking lot and also plenty of parking along the street. read more

Like other reviewers, its directly across the street from our condo. Even if that were not the case, we'd still come here. The park is very well maintained and clean. During the week its primarily mainlanders, however on the weekends that's when the locals come out with their families. Its vibrant and active, yet mellow. You really need to experience the difference in person to appreciate the differences. Every morning I would get up before sunrise and head down to the park. On average, there were two, maybe three other people down there. We'd head down there for sunset most evenings and there was always a place to sit and enjoy the sunset, either from the park or down on the beach. read more

This beach was less than a mile from where we were staying. I appreciated the life guard who was vigilant- he warned of the rocks and sea urchin activities; he reminded us to always be aware of our surroundings. The beach was big enough for social distancing. Felt very peaceful! It had amazing warm and clear water! We even saw sea turtles! The facilities are clean- bathrooms and outdoor showers! Highly recommend this beach- especially for families. On my annual pilgrimage to Maui, I almost met my maker! We go to Maui every year, when it is cold and raining (i.e. sprinkling in drought years!) in California, and other people's kids are still in school. Kids and me are like my ex and myself -we don't mix! I'm on the plane to Maui, with my snorkel gear packed, and my snorkel fins sticking out of the top of my carry on luggage at my feet. We're staying at the Maui Kamaole, a luxury condominium resort complex, a 12 minute walk to the center of Kamaole 3 beach -yes, there is a Kamaole 1 and Kamaole 2 beach, and no it is not named after King Kamaole I, II, and III. Kamaole 3 is a very popular beach in the center of Kihei. It is not a good snorkeling beach however. Ulua beach, 2 miles south, is one of the premiere snorkel sites in Maui. OK Molokini is prettier with more fish, but now as full of boats as the Spanish Armada! Besides why pay an arm and a leg just to go snorkeling, when you can snorkel right out the door of your hotel!? I've got on my one way swim pants from the past century, with the elastic gone, held in place by my one way XXL T-shirt, way too big, given to me by me ex wife, one of the few things she's given me, besides white hairs! Both items, the swim pants and the T-shirt, not the ex-wife(!), to remain in Hawaii after I return home. Snorkeling is best done on sunny days in the morning, as the currents build up and muddy the water with sand particles by mid day. There's a parking lot for the public right off of South Kihei road, and holds about 80 vehicles. Tuesday it is packed by 10am, restrooms, outdoor showers to remove sand. If you are coming by car, I store my electronic car key in a Locksack, a heavy duty, water-proof plastic pouch, available at any dive shop or Amazon, and put it in the back zippered pocket of my swim trunks. You know its going to be crowded, with dozens of condominium complexes right across the street from the beaches, here in South Kihei.. I'm wearing a T-shirt, as the T-shirt prevents sunburn on the back when the sun shines bright, and offers protection from getting scratched on rocks and coral reef. My wife wears a 0.5 mil light weight wet suit mainly for body warmth, and prescription goggles -that's why she can't rent out snorkel outfits for $10 a week from snorkel bob's!. She's also wearing my fins, as hers are too long for the carry on luggage. No, I can't fit into her shoes I'm wearing my water and sand proof water shoes, good for snorkeling in calm waters. In rough waters, I'm counting on the wife pulling me out! We go get on our snorkel mask and breathing tube, wet the mask to seal it, and go in -me forward, and she with the fins backward. Kamaole 3 is delinated by rocks on the extreme south side facing the Kihei boat dock, and the extreme north facing Kamaole 2 beach. We swam the south side at 1130am yesterday, and the snorkeling was no good as the waves were too strong. We did encounter a giant turtle almost on the beach -I learned that it is one of 2 giant turtles that permanently reside on this beach. Today at 915am we head over to the north side rocks, and find a place to get into the water. We float on top of the water a good 50 feet, past the sandy bottom, and check out the green gray rocks on the bottom. There is a big drop off here, and it is here sheltered by the line of rocks, that we see fish. Schools of fish the farther and deeper you go out. Not as brilliant of color as on Ulua beach. No brilliantly colored coral reefs like at Ulua, but I do see some brilliant white creatures with suckers on the rocks under the water, along with some bright dark red creatures with tentacles sticking up. 60 minutes later, I'm floating back to shore, when I get between some rocks in the shallow sand area. As I plant my feet, and stick my head up, looking away from the ocean, a powerful wave rolls through, pounding me like a pinball, carting head over into the water into the sands, just missing by a few feet the hard rocks. My ex always said I was hard headed, but not hard enough to go against those rocks! Two guys come off the beach to see if I'm OK. It was almost Hasta La Vista time, to paraphrase our ex-governor! read more

The Kamaole Beach Park is a series of three beaches which extend along the main area of South Kihea, and are within walking distance of nearly all the South Kihea condos. All three beaches have fine white sand, and offer easy swimming and boogie boarding for kids. They can get a little crowded, but people here are pretty low-key. Lifeguards are on duty. There are parking lots as well as ample street parking. The parks include grassy areas with picnic benches and BBQ pits, restrooms, and showers. There are numerous businesses across the street where food, snacks, and sundries are conveniently available. These beaches offer great views of Kahoolawe, Molokini, and West Maui. Bring a pair of binoculars in the winter, and you can see humpback whales right from your beach chair or blanket. read more

Four years - time for an update, even if things haven't changed much. My review of 2009 said it all. Once the Christmas holidays are over, the crowd thins a good deal. Kids are back on the mainland in school and the beaches are quieter, though still active. Mornings are best, before the trade winds kick up in the afternoon. Walking the beach at sunset last night was terrific, with few people on the beach and a couple young male whales competing with their jumps. This beach makes Maui fabulous. read more

I can repeat what the others have said - it's large, plenty of parking, nice shady trees, playground equipment, bbq grills, tables, flush toilets, showers, easy access to the water, lifeguards, not huge crowds - I'm just not sure what else you want . It's on the south end of town - you have to drive by a couple of other beaches to get to it (thus III) - perhaps that's why it isn't as crowded. it's worth the drive. read more

This beautiful, quiet and clean section of the Kama'ole Beach Park along S. Kihei is just a short drive from our Air B&B. It's not crowded on the Friday morning of our visit and we found street parking easily. A short walk from our car and we were on the beach. The water was clear and calm. It's so peaceful lying on the soft sand soaking up the warm sun,fanned by a gentle breeze. The restrooms are by the lifeguard station. There's an area for picnics and BBQ. Across the street are restaurants for food and drinks. Come early. Sun was just right for tanning around 11 or so; wind started to pick up by noon. read more
