I stopped here for breakfast while in town touring. I scouted this place out before I arrived and OMG..... This spot was everything!!!!! From the time I walked in I was greeted with a smile and got seated right away. I was told my waiters name and that he would be over shortly. My waiter arrived with a very energetic attitude-- he was very knowledgeable of the menu and was also very professional, which made my ordering smooth, I wish I could remember his name. I do remember he had a bald head and a blazer on. The food arrived pretty fast and also hot and fresh. The presentation of the food was amazing and so was the taste of everything. This place did not disappoint. The decor is really nice-with a New Orleans type of vibe. The music was good too. It was a breath of fresh air to receive such top notch service and enjoy every single thing on my plate. As most other reviews mention, the food was subpar especially for the price. The music was very loud and we could not hear the rest of our party at the table. I had a party of 4, we were seated immediately even while waiting on the last person in the party. We were seated at 2:30pm and received our food at 4:19. Three other parties who were seated after us but served and checked out before us, one of them consisting of 10 people. Our server, Payton was not the most attentive but still very polite and apologetic. We asked multiple times for water refills in glasses made for toddlers. We were seated at a table that was very wobbly and we overheard from the staff that every other table was missing screws. One of our drinks was cancelled because they were unable to make it but we're unsure why. Right before we got our food, I was singing along to the music, and someone who was clearly in charge asked me how I knew this song and not to say that I got it from my grandma because she would make sure I NEVER got my food. This made us feel like the restaurant did not take us seriously because we were young. When our food did finally come, our catfish and grits were very bland and lacking flavor. All food portions were very small and we never got a side of toast that we ordered. At the end of our meal, we brought our experience up to who we presume was the owner, and she gave us each discounts on our bill, $12 off of a $108 bill including gratuity for mine. It took around 15 minutes for us to get our updated bills back. My friend and I stopped here for breakfast during our most recent visit to Detroit. They were short staffed so it took a while to get seated. Once we were seated, our server came within a couple minutes to get our drink orders. She was very pleasant and answered all of our questions. My husband asked about an item on the menu and the server said it was her first day and she didn't know. The look of the interior was cool but attention to detail was missing. The bar had dead flowers in vases. It would be better to just throw them out and have none. The floor under our table was dirty with food and the table wobbled spilling our water. We ordered cheesy grits but they were bland with just some cheese sprinkled on top. Our breakfast sandwich was good though I asked for turkey bacon and did not get it. Went here for my birthday. They wouldn't seat us until the whole party was there. It was three of us and we were waiting for one person. The restaurant was slow since brunch was winding down. I asked could we be seated because I wanted to order drinks and food for the table since it was my birthday. They would not let me sit at the table, but insisted that we sit the bar even though the restaurant was nearly empty. That really frustrated me so I ended up actually not ordering a drink even when we were seated. The food was delicious good, but the portion sizes did not match the prices. The food was way too expensive for the small amount of servings you were given. I would try to go back here but not during the weekend brunch, maybe during a lunch special or dinner special but I don't think paying $22 for a slice of toast and three wings and $24 for the equivalent of a plate of grits is acceptable. Unfortunately, my experience at Sugah Please Detroit was very disappointing. While we were seated, a ceiling tile fell onto our table, which was both surprising and concerning. After waiting about 45 minutes for our food, it finally arrived only warm instead of hot. The cinnamon French toast was burnt, and the burnt taste overpowered the dish. What made the experience even more disappointing was the lack of hospitality. After everything that happened, we had to ask for some form of service recovery instead of it being offered proactively. A situation like this should have been acknowledged immediately, especially after the ceiling tile incident and the long wait. The overall response left us feeling like our concerns weren't taken seriously. Between the safety issue, the food quality, the extended wait, and the lack of customer care, this visit left a lasting negative impression. Everything was highly seasoned, and I'd return specifically for the fried green tomatoes and seafood gumbo. Everything came out hot and freshly prepared; the crab cake was tender and full of crab meat, and I don't think I've ever had better fried green tomatoes - the perfect texture and flavor. The shrimp and grits looked amazing, and even the meat lover's omelet looked good. I think they could upgrade their coffee offerings to include espresso drinks, but they just opened, so maybe that's on the horizon. I was pleasantly surprised by my meal at Sugah Please. I had read a few reviews that made me cynical, but my friend wanted to try it so we came. I'll be honest and say that the place wasn't very clean and the vases on the tables had dirty water with dying flowers, but other than that, it was great. I ordered the veggie omelet with a side of bacon and the omelet was amazing. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and seasoned great. It was packed full of veggies like spinach and peppers. The toast was also tasty as it seemed to be grilled on a griddle or pan rather than toasted. The meal was filling and kept me filled up most of the day. My friend also loved her food. The waitress we had (Ashley) was slow and had horrible communication. She took our orders for mimosas after a long wait and then let the glasses sit at the bar not pouring any mimosas for 20 minutes! The place wasn't crowded at all, and i now know why. She never communicated that she didn't have the blueberry syrup for my requested mimosa and after flagging down the nice hostess to ask her to inquire she let us know this information. Our waitress then came over with these mimosas without any apology only to discover that they had used blue coloring for my drink? So it wasn't blueberry at all just blue. My water never got refilled, she never checked on us to ask how things were going cause if she had she would know I was unsatisfied with my drink. I had to go ask another person to remake me another drink and they were happy to but also very slow moving. The food eventually came, after waiting another long wait to order then to get the food, and it was decent but I wouldn't anywhere else ever pay $30 for a 1 piece of bread French toast plate. That's ridiculous. If you're from Detroit don't waste your time. The quality and customer service is subpar to any normal diner you've ever been to for 3x the price, go to coney! poor customer service and AUTOMATIC 20% gratuity regardless of party size. We didn't even eat here. My dad and I visited for brunch and were disappointed as soon as walked in. We're in the middle of a heat wave and there was no air conditioning. We then ordered 2 mimosas and the bartender proceeded to grab two PLASTIC flutes that had clearly been washed and reused, poured our drinks and presented them to us. Based on this we decided not to eat any food from here. I've worked in food service, reusing plastic of any kind is not sanitary as it cannot be properly sanitized compared to glassware. While I really appreciated supporting a local business in Downtown Detroit, the service at Sugah Please really soured what could have been a sweet experience. From the start when we walked in, there was a line of people who were waiting with no one who was keeping track of who came when. After about a 15-20 minute wait, we were finally seated at the bar and placed our orders. The food itself was pretty good- especially the crispness of the chicken. However, one person's meal came about 20 minutes after the other, and when we asked about it, they said the waffle had been dropped so they were making another. However, when the food came the waffle was not very hot while the chicken was piping hot so I was a bit confused if they had just needed more time to make the food itself. The Brussel sprouts were very crispy and cooked well! There seemed to be an issue with the front of house service, as there were many people who were complaining because they had made reservations and they still had to wait. When in fact the actual entrance to the restaurant is on larned and Shelby. (No signs for direction to the venue) We waited 15 minutes to be greeted and 30 mins for our orders to be taken and waters to be dropped off at the table. The wait time for food wasn't as bad as the service, however, when the food did come out half of it was cold! When the food arrived we had no napkins or silverware to eat. In the midst of all this chaos customers were leaving because they were seating people and no service was being provided. They also take automatic gratuity from each check. I really really liked Sugah Please. I'm a seafood brunch guy, and if you factor in portions, price and quality, I think it might be my favorite seafood brunch spot that I've tried in Detroit. We had the Blackened Salmon and grits and it was one of the best brunch meals that I've had in the city. The grits were fantastic. These were not lumpy, mealy, bland grits. These grits were incredibly creamy and flavored with a slight bit a of cheese that I loved. I could've easily gotten a plate of grits and been happy and full. They are the best grits in the area in my opinion: The blackened salmon that came with the grits was awesome as well. You got a great portion of it, it was flaky and fresh, and most importantly, it was seasoned thoroughly. When I get blackened salmon, I want some Cajun spice on there, and they did the job as well as I've seen a restaurant do it in the area. There was a nice crust of it and it made the fish taste extremely good. It's hard to find reasonably priced, brunch salmon in the area. This was the best I've had. It was incredible. Sugah is located right next to the Pontchartrain Hotel in a great area Downtown between Jefferson and Larned. I thought the inside of it was extremely well decorated and not bare at all. Loved the booths, they were extremely comfortable. Great spot to take a date. The service was awesome and every person working there was extremely courteous. Couldn't ask for a nicer staff. For a downtown brunch spot with a high end menu, I think Sugah Please is one of the best values going.
