I got a small bowl of gumbo and garlic bread. Definitely good comfort food. Service was good--our waiter filled our glasses quickly. Ambiance was decent as well.

Solid Creole place in Durham. Great ambiance! It is such a cozy spot with a real sense of community. There's a dining room without music for a quieter meal, and another with live music where people dance, socialize, and enjoy the night together. The crowd skews a bit older, which makes it feel extra wholesome and welcoming. Service was warm and attentive, and our food came out quickly and hot. We highly recommend the jambalaya -- generous portion and fantastic flavor! The seafood plate was also excellent; both the catfish and shrimp were cooked perfectly. All the appetizers were enjoyable. The only disappointment was the smoked brisket plate (surprisingly), which was quite dry and flavor was just okay (the brisket tasted better in the empanada). We will rather try the fried chicken next time! We stole glances at other tables and the chicken looked amazing! We got multiple dessert (big dessert menu, yay), and the bread pudding was the standout. The other desserts were fun, though they had more of a "fair food" vibe.

We were so impressed by the food here! Me being a huge fan of NOLA and visiting every couple years, I find myself not only missing the creole food but also looking to fill that hankering with local spots here in NC, few have ever come close to this until succotash! The decor and ambience is wonderful with a lovely outdoor patio to enjoy good weather. The staff was warm, friendly and knowledgeable, across the board this spot is a winner!

My family roots come from New Iberia, Louisiana and I must say, this is the most authentic tasting food that is centered around creole culture that I've had in all of the places I've lived. The food was filled with flavorful spices, the atmosphere has colorful jazz/music themed paintings and art pieces. I was pleasantly surprised by the deciduous meal and so was my friend who is from New York and not as familiar with Creole cuisine. The staff from the bar and the kitchen were friendly, welcoming and very pleasant despite a very busy restaurant. It was also wonderful to see the way they worked together in the kitchen to create such delicious meals. I will absolutely be back to try a new plate!

    Lots of gumbo!

Wow! We made reservations early on a Friday night in their back area. The restaurant is a remodeled home, and the rooms have been remodeled into a front area with a bar and some smaller tables, and a back area with mostly 4-tops that can be pushed together to accommodate 8 or so. It's cozy, but we never felt the other diners were "in our laps." The rooms are fitted with quality napkins (paper, not cloth) and metal utensils on the bare wood of the tables. Simple, but evokes an old world gathering place. The smells of woodsmoke and grilled meats had been tempting us since the parking lot. But the Weekend Special Seafood Gumbo grabbed us all. Due to rain and other delays, we finally totaled six, and five of us got the Seafood gumbo. It was amazing. (The non-spicy diner enjoyed their Southern Fried Chicken, as well!) This being a Creole place, things are spicy. Sad that there's no liquor license, but a crisp IPA was almost as good as a Sazerac or a Vieux Carre. Everyone enjoyed their food immensely, and the lady who came in to sing after we had eaten and were getting dessert just made the evening even better. Bluesy interpretations of everything from Van Morrison to George Benson and off to parts unknown. Dessert for several of us was the Bananas Foster, which arrived as an empanada, rather than a crêpe. The filling was pure banana goodness, but we were all taken aback by the presentation. In the end, it was amazing, especially with a cup of decaf Cafe Bruello (unless I miss my guess!). Tell the waiter to start brewing before placing the dessert orders, though, because the coffee takes a bit. We had to keep from eating ours until the coffee arrived.

Succotash holds a special place in our hearts as we've celebrated a lot of special moments with succotash and the food is always good. The catfish/shrimp never disappoints, the chicken is crispy but juicy but the citrus broccoli and the smash fried potato's are my favorites sides.

We visited the Duke University Chapel this morning and chatted with the docent, Larry. He asked about our plans for lunch and suggested Succotash. Boy are we glad we took his advice. I have the smoked brisket plate. Twelve hours of smoke leaves delicious, melt in your mouth beef. Incredible. The plate comes with potatoes (brilliant), pickles and coleslaw. I added a cup of seafood gumbo which was as good as any I've had in New Orleans. My wife had a salad and a side of burnt ends. We finished with the cherry bourbon cake. A great meal. Excellent service as well. A beautiful Saturday afternoon on the patio with a fresh local IPA and a delicious meal. Awesome

Succotash was on my list of places to try and they did not disappoint. We made a reservation for 7 on a Thursday and when we arrived we were greeted immediately. The place is cozy, warmly lit and unpretentious. It felt like the kind of place the regulars knew was a hidden gem. We ordered the Succotash as an appetizer and it was fresh, had a little kick and had just enough seasoning to let the vegetables shine on their own. It also came topped with your choice of eggplant or a protein and we chose the sausage which was so delicious. I will definitely get this next time I come back. I ordered the brisket sandwich with potatoes and it was delightful. The brisket was smoky and tender and the pickles and pickled onions tasted homemade and were perfect on the sandwich. The potatoes were seasoned perfectly and tender but had a slight crunch on the outside. The shrimp dinner came with potatoes and slaw and again the shrimp were cooked to perfection. Needless to say, I will be back to make my way through the menu.

I have been wanting to try Succotash for well over a year. Everytime I suggested it, someone would ultimately select a different restaurant. So last night my husband and I wanted to eat out and it was just us two, and I say HEY let's try Succotash. We drove right past the place without realizing it, so it might have been that we were engrossed in our convo and missed it, but to me, it's easy to miss. We were greeted warmly. I LOVE it when a restaurant acknowledges your presence but also seem geniunely happy that you came. My husband is Louisiana born and raised so the decor and ambiance definitely felt like home for him. The owner we were told is from Baton Rogue. We had a great server, so shout out to X, friendly, warm knowledgeable, attentive but not inserting himself into our evening. He nailed it! Now the food is one of those experiences where you take a bite and you look at each other and your eyes widen. Shut the Front Door! it was GUD. We had the succotash topped with grilled eggplant. I am pescatarian/vegetarian. I KNOW that is not going to sound good to many,so FIRST thing to know is you can top your succotash with meat, per the menu if you want to, and SECOND it was amazing with no topping at all. I consider myself a great cook, but that succotash was other worldly. PERIODT! My husband had the seafood gumbo, and I just tasted a wee bit of the roux because it had sausage in it so I wasn't going to bust up my stomach to eat a spoonful, but the flavor was dead on. We make gumbo because my husband and family are from Louisiana so this is a common event/holiday dish. It would be unfair to compare this with our homemade versions BUT for a restaurant this authentic and very good. Better than any I have tasted in the triangle so far. We also had fried oysters and they were tender, fried to perfection with a side of roumalade sauce. My husband had a catfish po boy, with voodoo chips and I had the catch of the day blackened. not one single thing to complain about. It was all smack our lips and call your Mama good. We were so full but then our fat butts closed out the night with a PEACH bread putting. We did take that home. We devoured it with whip cream later but who knew..peach bread pudding. Wow. I have No regrets and am not apologizing for the lbs I likely gained. It is RARE you go out and have a meal get that knocks it out the part like this. I highly recommend!

Arrived for a solo dinner. There was a bit of a wait because the place was packed but I'm glad I waited. I decided on the brisket. It came out quickly, very smoky moist and perfectly seasoned. The potatoes were crispy soft on the inside and delicious. The slaw was crunchy and fresh, and I finished off with a nice desert (crème brûlée empanada) overall a great experience. Interior was very cute. I'll come back!

Fresh Catch Plate Red drum (blackened)

Top notch fresh Southern seafood! The Fresh Catch Red Drum special plate was among the best fish I have ever had. I got it blackened. The seasoning and sauce was amazing. And the brown sugar rum cake was light and fluffy. Highly recommend.

I was contemplating going to another restaurant in the area, but the weather was bad. So that led me to Succotash, and what a blessing that was! The spot is so cozy and just a perfect low-key vibe! I sat at the bar. Customer service was amazing. The young lady at the bar was so polite, friendly, and on point.   The sangria was so delicious. The gumbo was flavorful, and the rice was perfect once you mixed it into the gumbo. From the fish to the potatoes to the shrimp to the slaw and the pickled onions, everything was delicious. I enjoyed my meal! It made me so happy to have a great meal. The brisket was full of flavor, almost like juicy roast meets smoked brisket. The prices are reasonable. I am sure they get busy, but the food and sangria are worth it.

I recently came for the Sunday brunch and will definitely be back for dinner soon. Not to be dramatic but the food was aMaZiNg!We ordered the brisket and grits, gumbo and beingets and all were insanely good and very filling. The price was very reasonable for the amount of food you got as well. The vibes were very relaxed and the service was great. This spot is absolutely a hidden gem!

So…read moresince I couldn't get a reservation on my birthday to the place I originally wanted to go, we decided to come here. There is plenty of parking on the backside of the building, paid parking out front, and be careful not to park in the apartment spaces on the side...they sounded pretty serious about towing. I had made a reservation but it was probably unnecessary as it was pretty empty when we arrived (it was about 5pm on a Saturday.) The waitress brought a bottle of water to the table and took our drink order. And I know that this place is literally call it's a Southern thing but can I mention how much I dislike drinking out of mason jars? I ordered the chicken n biscuits, my husband got the country hamburger steak plate, my BiL got wings, and my SiL got the crabcakes. We also orders charred jalapeno & sweet corn hushpuppies and frickles as an appetizer. I was VERY excited about my food. Y'all...the only thing that impressed me were the Frickles. Everything else was distinctly underwhelming. I also ordered Blackberry Betta Have My Money which was not that great. My SiL ordered a espresso martini that they said didn't come from a mix but she said it tasted like it was. The bathrooms were very clean. The decor and the vibe were great. Cute even. I really enjoyed that part of it. After dropping off our food, we never saw our waitress again unless we flagged her down for drink refills. It was especially frustrating since there was automatic gratuity added. And since the place wasn't that busy, it felt like she didn't feel the need to earn her automatic tip. Overall I was disappointed in my birthday dinner. I won't be coming back here.

"Delicious Vegan Food by South Square in Durham"…read more (Yay, this is my 500th review!) I was surprised to see I hadn't already reviewed this place even though I've eaten there multiple times. (Someone else said the same, so I wonder if their entry got reset.) Sitting near the Target, this place isn't much to look at from the outside, but the food is a gem. I came on a Saturday evening at 6pm, and it was hopping, but there were still tables available. It was a beautiful day, so a lot of people chose to sit in the outdoor bench seating areas, making more total available. One can order with a person at the counter, online, or via a tablet at the counter. I opted for the Baked Chkn poppers plate: Seven baked Chkn (fake chicken) bites served over yellow rice, topped with green onions and served with your choice of two sides (I went for mac & cheese and collards). My dining partner got the chkn sandwich plate with the same two sides. We got a number and found a table. The wait felt a little long-- it was over 20 minutes to get the food. But it was SOOOOO good when we got it! The server also brought us our drinks so we wouldn't have to wait the full time for those, which was nice. My plate was delicious. The chkn bites and rice had a curry flavor to them that was SO tasty. The texture of the chkn was pretty close to some sort of meat, albeit maybe not identical to chicken. I did wish there were more bites, but they did advertise is properly. It also came with a homemade honey mustard that I used as a dip and drizzle. I really liked the mac & cheese, too- it had some heat/ kick to it. My dining partner loved her chkn sandwich too. It was also the "right" amount of food-- not so much that we had leftovers but enough that we weren't hungry when we finished. Parking is sometimes a bit tight, but I've always found a spot. And the price is decent-- the plates hover around $20 each, which is not bad for top-tier vegan foods with two sides. Overall, really like this place, and happy to come back, even though I'm not vegan (or even vegetarian)!

Prices were affordable, and the restaurant was almost filled to capacity. Tables are close to each other with little elbow room.
