Lidia's Place - Tuna in a tomato wrap

Three and a half stars, really. Went for Tuesday lunch, lured in by the menu entry of an open face…read moreturkey sandwich, which I have been craving recently. Adjacent parking lot with enough spaces. Airy open dining area with maybe a dozen tables. I was greeted warmly by a friendly waitress who served me a really strong cup of hot coffee, perfect on this cold day. Ordered a cup of lobster bisque, which was served hot with a package of oyster crackers and another package of saltines. Also ordered that hot open face turkey sandwich. The waitress asked me if I wanted the soup first, or both together, a very thoughtful gesture (I dislike when two courses are served together). Bisque was delicious. Really good. I mean really good, flavorful and soothing and comforting. Then the entree was served, an immense plate with that sandwich and a big pile of mashed potatoes. Sadly, that sandwich wasn't nearly as good as the bisque: quite salty, it wasn't real turkey, but more of a deli turkey. The gravy was good, and I was served plenty of it, but that turkey was quite salty, spoiling the dish. And the vegetables were tasteless things; I had two pieces of carrots, and ignored the rest. Nice ambience, friendly staff, strong coffee and a delicious bisque saved the day. I was left satisfied, yet disappointed. Too bad.

Ok, this may be my favorite local breakfast and lunch place! You can pretty much seat yourself and…read moreenjoy a visual dining experience. I swear I see someone I know each time I go in there which is pretty cool! The servers feel like my cool aunt or cousin who just happens to bring me yummy food. Yesterday, hubby and I grabbed a quick lunch. I had a tuna wrap and he had an overflowing egg salad sandwich. Both served w/ potato salad, pickle and chips. You can upgrade to fries, but the chips are good! Big portions, so we had 2 meals! This morning we were driving by Lidia's on the way to cut a Christmas tree (btw, their decorations made it even more cozy) I picked up the Lidia's classic which is an English muffin with crispy Taylor ham, egg and cheese. SO GOOD! Hubby got the same but in a omelette w/ home fries and toast while my daughter got the short stack of banana and walnut pancakes.

We showed up about 10 minutes before closing and weren't greeted or told they were about to shut…read moredown--no heads-up, no hello, just silence when we walked in. That set the tone a bit, and the staff stayed pretty flat and distant throughout. In a place serving Italian sandwiches, you'd hope for at least a little of that classic deli energy, but it felt more transactional than welcoming. On the plus side, the sandwiches were loaded with meat--generous piles of gabagool (capicola) and the other cold cuts, so you definitely get your money's worth in terms of quantity. That's the highlight. Flavor-wise, though, they fell short. Everything tasted kind of one-note and under-seasoned. The meat was good quality, but it needed salt, maybe some oregano, a splash of vinegar or oil, or just more care in the assembly to bring it to life. It wasn't bad, just forgettable--more filling than satisfying. Overall, it's a solid 3-star spot if you're purely after a big, meat-heavy sandwich and don't mind basic service. If you want personality behind the counter or a sub that actually pops with flavor, you might want to keep looking. We left somewhat satisfied but not impressed, and probably won't make a special trip back.

Great sandwiches, fresh ingredients, helpful staff and the decor is perfectly nostalgic. Warning: the sandwiches are enormous, so bring your appetite! Prices are a bit high, but what isn't these days. They are still working out their flow, so bring a little patience as well. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Hubby got a roast beef and mozzarella hero. We also got a large napoleon, a few other pastries and a pound of Italian cookies - everything was brought home to eat later. Opened up my sandwhich and it was very thick with meat and cheese. It looked great, smelled great, started eating it and then started tasting something moldy. Not sure if it was the onions, the peppers or both. Scraped off all the veggies and tried to continue eating my sandwhich but it unfortunately was tainted to where I could not eat it. Hubby's roast beef was dry - shockingly. Went to eat my Napoleon later in the evening - same thing - tasted bad - tasted like mold - could not eat it. Was pretty disappointed. Such a shame.
