It's been 30 years since I've been to a White Castle. I moved from NJ to New England and they are not "a thing" north of the Tappan Zee Bridge. Was in North Jersey for work, nostalgia took over. It's true what they say..."you can't go home again." Service was good. Place was clean. Surprisingly busy for a Sunday afternoon. The food...tasteless. Completely soggy. It's the ONLY restaurant food that is BETTER in the grocery store frozen section. Good news, all always have the memories. Although bad reviews, I decided the good ones outweigh the bad and took a chance. The food was amazing, the burgers were cooked well and the buns were not soggy just a little soft from the heat steaming from the juicy burgers. The chicken sandwiches were ridiculously big and crispy to perfection, no joke. They were better than the burgers in my opinion. 2 pleasant employees worked the overnight and went above and beyond with service. No attitude or rushing us either. We made a pitstop here for a quick meal during our roadtrip. Surprisingly, this is my first time eating White Castle, so we got the 10 Sliders, 2 Fries and 2 Drinks Combo (~$24). First of all, I love how each slider comes neatly packaged in a box (although it seems like a lot of excess packaging). The sliders are soft and flavorful, yet simple. It was too easy to gobble up 5 of these in a sitting. We also got both fries and onion rings, which were yummy. Our order was ready right away and everything was hot and fresh. This location is falling off. Went by the drive thru yesterday night approximately 9:30pm it took forever with only 3 cars ahead of me. It didn't appear that the customers ahead of me had large orders due to being passed small bags. As I waited, someone walked inside, placed a regular order sat for a few minutes, received their order and left as Ppl in drive thru continued to wait. When you order large Onion rings you receive a regular size, onion rings were only filled to half way mark and tasted stale as if they haven't changed the oil they fry it in. Glad the buns of the burger weren't soggy like they use to be there, but after a damn near 20 minute wait, the food should at least taste fresh. This is without a doubt the single worst location in the entire chain. They are consistent but not in a good way. Consistently bad. Once again they screwed up a very simple order. I ordered a #8. 10 burgers 2 fries and 2 sodas. I specifically asked for Hamburgers NO CHEESE. Not once not twice but 3 times i said no cheese. Drive off from the window and yes. This place does exactly what it is designed to do...satisfy a craving. Prior to slow motion style entrance through the doors, I had not been to a White Castle in over ten years. This was the first introduction to this delicacy for my entire family. My family is a Krystal family. They are poisoned. This place was great. So this was my first visit to White Castle but not my first White Castle experience. I've had the frozen White Castle (I know, I Know, it's not the same) and I've seen that Harold and Kumar movie. So With this as my White Castle baseline, I have to say that this place wasn't great but still ok. I ordered a burger, cheeseburger, and White Castle fries. First, the fries were kind of mushy and bland so that is a definite no to those spud duds in the future. My cheeseburger was much better, and my only complaint with this gem is that someone managed to sneak some ketchup on this beauty; the next time I will be more vigilant. However, the star of the day was the burger. I guess I am a traditionalist, because I am all about the natural flavor of the burger. I felt that the ketchup on my cheeseburger served only to mask what could be perfection. My friend is something called a Craver, and she says that there are better White Castle stores out there. I grew up eating White Castle burgers. There was (and still is) a shop on Bergenline Avenue across from Hudson County Park and because of price (we were poor) we ate here after a day by the lake. I loved them. These days, the closest White Castle is in Ledgewood and I sneak up there about once a month (my wife definitely does not approve). This franchise (I guess that's what they are) is well run and the drive thru quick and staffed by friendly servers. The quality has been consistent and that's all you can expect from a fast food outlet like this. This isn't gourmet food, but even Julia Child ate at fast food shops (she liked the McDonalds quarter pounder) so it's acceptable for a foodie to enjoy a dalliance with White Castle. White Castle is an American Classic while I am a vegetarian they did have veggie sliders which were good but nothing beats they're classic burger so cute! Gourmet food this is not. But you don't come here for that anyways. White Castle is classic fast food. It's absolutely delicious and inexpensive. I come to this Ledgewood location about 4 times a year for my White Castle craving and it always delivers. The drive through always seems to move fast which is nice. The burgers are very small so make sure you get a couple at least. I usually go for the 2 double cheeseburgers and fries plus 6 piece chicken rings. Hits the spot. Oddly enough I don't see all the hype in White Castle. We were traveling through Jersey and opted to stop in. Now I have eaten the frozen White Castle burgers before and honestly I don't see much of the difference. The food is fairly cheap and it was a great snack for the drive but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again. It is in a plaza with Applebees, so maybe that would work better. Yes, it really is open 24 hours. Have you ever been in Ledgewood, NJ at 1 a.m. and needed to find food? Yeah ... not a lot of options. White Castle is open 24 hours per day ... the only other options are the 7-11 type convenience stores where you'll get a pre-made, cold $6.25 chicken sandwich which tastes like rubber and silly putty. Where I am from, we don't have White Castle unless it comes frozen in a box from the grocery store. Even if we did, I am not sure I'd ever eat it because each tiny burger probably takes a day off your life and gives it to Keith Richards. Health food, this is not. However, at 1 a.m. in the boonie-burbs of NJ ... it did the trick nicely. The staff here was great. It was a two woman team. The cashier was very effective, friendly and fast. The person making the burgers was fast, effective and thorough. The prep area looked clean ... spotless actually and the food was ready in a matter of minutes and tasted fresh. I don't think I could have had a better experience other than the fact that the drive through is confusing as is the exit onto the road. For those who haven't had White Castle ... the burgers are small. Even a light eater would probably need 2-3 in order to fill them up. However, they are about 99 cents each for a slider with cheese. The meat doesn't really have any flavor at all. It's just kind of there. The pickle and onions are what give it flavor and the meat just kind of adds a greasy element (in a good way). Small steamed buns make the sandwich all the better. The fries are crinkle fries and mine were crisp and perfectly salted. For what I needed, this more than hit the spot. 5 sliders and small fries was just under $7. I probably could have got by with 4. White Castles are a rare animal in my neck of the woods, so I am glad I got to try them. Not sure if it was worth the few days off my life the greasy meat took ... but it was a satisfying meal. She'd never been, and I figured going to White Castle is definitely one of the boxes one much check when in New Jersey. We arrived at this location at maybe 11pm on a Friday and--despite the relatively few patrons--there wasn't a freshly bused table in the house.
