Besides eating, I'm a HUGE fan of NFL football, and I watch every game during the season and the playoffs, up to and including the crown glory... Superbowl. For the last three months, I've been seeing Subway commercials advertising the "Comin' on Hot" sandwich, using ghost pepper bread. I detest commercials, and I usually ignore the advertisement, but the "foodie" in me got the best of me, and I couldn't help myself but to succumb... The Colfax Subway restaurant is unique, as it's a "standalone" building, unlike most Subway stores you'll visit. It's located just off busy Interstate 80, and the restaurant receives lots of traffic from the freeway. Besides the truckers, tourists and freeway travelers, this restaurant is a favorite of western Placer County locals who are in the mood for a decent sandwich. From the advertised, "Comin' On Hot" menu, I went with a #34, the "Spicy Nacho Steak" sandwich. The menu describes this sandwich as, "Steak, 2x Cheddar cheese sauce, onions, peppers, jalapeno peppers. Creamy Siracha, SubKrunch toasted." The menu didn't mention the much touted on television "ghost pepper bread." I guess that was in the "SubKrunch?" By my request, I added sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce and olives, as I love to load up a sandwich as much as possible, as veggies are an absolute delight. The sandwich began with the "SubKrunch" roll, which, according to the media advertisements, was ghost pepper bread. The bread roll was fresh and crunchy, with large bites that went "crunch" when I bit into the sandwich. Where were the ghost peppers - ghost peppers are reportedly the hottest chili peppers on the planet - as the bread definitely had a slight "kick," but where was the ghost pepper burn that I was looking for? The sandwich included a smaller size portion of marinated steak, thinly sliced and grilled to perfection. As per the advertisements, Cheddar cheese sauce, Siracha sauce, onions, diced bell pepper and pickled jalapeno pepper slices graced the sandwich. Tomato slices, shredded lettuce and olives were added on my request, as the friendly staff at Subway will make your sandwich to your order. With my first bite, I was rewarded with a taste sensation, as the meat, cheese sauce, veggies, and the ghost pepper bread all worked together to made for a great sandwich. But... ghost pepper bread? ... where was the heat? Yes, there was a bit of a "kick" to the sandwich, but it wouldn't have been enough to offend a grade school girl, much less a seasoned veteran of Mexican dining like your author. This sandwich was delicious to the taste, but when it came to "ghost pepper" was as tame as your grandmother's little kitten on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I absolutely laugh at the difference between the sandwich showcased in television commercials, and the "real" sandwich that you actually get at the restaurant. The difference is stunning... if you've ever seen the advertisements on television, you know what I mean, and I'll let you draw your own conclusion. $10.29, plus state sales tax for a 6-inch, highly advertised, custom made sub sandwich. Hmmmm... the price of admission seems to be on the steep... way too steep side of the sandwich fence for me. It is what it is, and now my curiosity has been satisfied, and I now can watch the NFL playoffs, along with the Superbowl knowing that I've enjoyed a Subway "Comin' In Hot" sandwich, with ghost pepper bread. read more

6/18/23-4:30pm we stop at the bus on this subway sandwich store. The server who serve us was so RUDE. I don't know if she understand diversity . We bought sandwich , other one was suppose to be everything except onion, the other one has no jalapeño. It's cleared that she suppose to listen them first before she talk because she wants to finish everything all at once. She can't understand because she is not focus on what she's doing. On our way to Truckee area we stopped by this Colfax location as it was right off the hwy80 freeway, easy off and back on freeway. Store was busy there were about 4 people in front of me and people were still coming in. They work pretty quickly as didn't take long to get our food prepared. Our sandwiches were made to order, My husband ordered the Spicy Italian and I ordered the sweet onion teriyaki. The breads and condiments were fresh and everything tasted great. We ordered a kids meal ham, cheese with tomatoes sandwich for our granddaughter she really enjoyed her sandwich. They didn't have any kids toys and offered a cookie which was okay she didn't know the difference and loved the cookie treat for her dessert. My husband and I also bought a cookie too because I love their macadamia nut cookies they are so delicious and fresh. I was surprised their drink machine was open for patrons to use as all the fast food places I have been too they are closed off. I didn't see them clean the debit machine or counter where they put your bag cleaned after each person. This is usually common practice during COVID. All employees were wearing masks and gloves and they have two rows of tables in front of all counters for distancing from food counters but not the register. No eating inside due to COVID. The person who waited on us said bathroom was closed. I asked if they closed bathrooms because of the road closure and she said yes I said well that was nice way to treat customers she said oh well! My family was driving towards Tahoe and this Subway was right off the freeway, next to a gas station, and had a decently clean bathroom (LOL) - so they're getting five stars from us. We visited two weeks before Christmas, on a weekend. They had 5-6 employees, 2 making sandwiches, 1 as a cashier, and 2-3 in the back ? We were served at a reasonable rate, given there was 4 people ahead of us. So today was unbelievable at this Subway! My daughter, boyfriend and I after a hard day of work go to this Subway. Tired and hungry. We order and decided to dine in , relax and enjoy our meal. As soon as we set down and unwrapped our food one of the employees started to sweep up dust. There was so much dust It was floating around , you could even taste it in the air. It was starting to make us sneezing, runny nose and allergies. It was getting on our food. We try to Indore the situation, but it was more than we could stand. I kindly asked the staff. I said please! I was not trying to be rude, but if she could please stop sweeping until we were done with our food. She replied that she had a schedule to get her work done and that she was going to stay on schedule. I told her that we all have allergies and that it is affecting us. She told me to go outside and eat. Well.......we all know right now is allergy season so we could not go outside to eat. My daughter, especially suffers from seasonal allergies and sweeping up all that dust in our faces, and on our food was something my daughter just could not take. I had to drive her to the emergency room. We all had red eyes, but she got the worst of it. We were there for four hours. I do not understand why somebody would be so inconsiderate and rude to somebody's situation especially when they tell them we have allergies and they continue sweeping! Not a care in the world or never any consideration, only rudeness and sticking to her stubbornness. I can understand cleaning but to clean at 5:30 something that could be done before or after work, when they do not have costumes dining or maybe a wet mop. Please! We picked up and left everything! It's subway- not much to complain about. This is a small town and so yes, often service is a bit slower than some people driving through might be used to, but not incredibly so. I have never found the owners anything but respectful and I have frequented this place 10+ times. Also, you can order on the phone or online and have expedited service. read more

I have stopped at this Subway twice in the past three months while visiting Colfax. Both times service was excellent and the sandwiches prepared just as efficiently and quickly as any of the many Subways I have patronized over the years. Very convenient location while traveling on I-80 to/or from Donner or Lake Tahoe. As you exit eastbound I-80 at the Colfax exit you are facing Subway, just can't miss it, plus quick entrance back to the freeway to continue your journey. Plenty of parking, too. Student employees, all smiles, and great attitudes. I'll definitely be stopping in again when traveling along I-80. read more

Worst Subway EVER! The restaurant was dirty and unkempt. The bathrooms were out-of-service bathrooms. We ordered two of the standard soups... and ended up with 1 1/2 cups of the bottom-of-the-barrel soup. When we complained that we were paying for 2 soups and had only received 1 1/2, they did not offer a refund. The service was so poor and the restaurant so dirty that we could not eat the food! When we started going to Tahoe more frequently, we always found a Subway on the way to the resorts for our lunch as resort food seem to always be expensive. $5 footlongs, you can't really beat that price, but of course it isn't quality. It's alright... ended up coming here to use the restroom and refuel while stuck at this exit for 3-4hrs on the way to Tahoe/Reno. They were hella busy that day because everyone and their moms were stuck here, it took me a good half an hour to use the restroom because of the line. And another good 45-60min to get sandwiches since the line just snaked inside the building. Granted it was super busy, the service was pretty decent and they tried their best to get everyone's orders finished so they could keep the line moving. They were nice enough to let me add an order when I got to the register, since my friend texted me to add another sandwich to our order. The sandwiches themselves were regular Subway sandwiches, I mean what more is there left to be said about that? Cheap, fast food. Things to note: 1. The high school girls that work here are not all too bright. Making a sandwich requires little to no education, yet somehow they messed up. First off, when I'm ordering a veggie delite sandwich (basically a salad in a bun) give me more then a couple shreds of iceberg lettuce and 2 thin strips of bell pepper. I watched as she gave me 4 olive halves and TONS of mustard when I said lite mustard. Secondly, watching her try to put avocado on as sandwich was nerve wracking. She took a sharp paring knife and started hacking away at the soft avocado in her hand. We have lived here two years now and the older lady has never changed. She is grumpy and rolls her eyes while you try to decide what you want. She's even made a comment about "You've been here before, you dont know what you want." Last nite it was 15 minutes until closing time, the door was unlocked and the open sign still on. All doors closed, but very hot, had to take my food to go. Average Subway. The employees were nice enough, food was barely tolerable as are most Subway sandwiches. What I hated, was whenever I tried to order soup they were out! It happened a few times in a row. When I mentioned to the girl there that I was disappointed they were always out of soup, she told me the owner wouldn't let her make any! She said she told him that people ask for it all the time, but he just told her no. I guess he decided because it was summer, nobody would order soup? It just rubbed me the wrong way so I completely stopped going. No big deal, not really a fan anyway.
