Went in there and the people were not friendly and just threw our subs around and seemed very uncaring. @Gabby

The Dairy Barn - X-Small Frozen Custard, Pistachio

We wanted a quick snack while driving from the UP to Green Bay and came upon The Dairy Barn. As we…read moredrove in, we thought the place was inside of the nearby gas station, but we quickly found that it was a separate building with quite a number of cars and customers surrounding it. There was a nearby setup of picnic tables and all seats were taken, with people eating burgers, custard, and other treats. To order, there's a choice of either a drive through, or you can queue up at one of the windows in front. We just wanted a small snack and ordered two items. Service is quite quick; everything only took a couple of minutes to come out. Extra Small Pistachio Frozen Custard ($2) - This was the weekly special and we got the very last dregs in the frozen custard machine. We saw the employee using a spatula on the top of the machine to push through the rest of the custard. As such, we're not sure if the custard was the freshest and best churned or not. The sweetness of the custard, mint green in color, first comes through, followed by a bit of artificial pistachio flavoring. The strange thing is that we had pistachio frozen custard from another place the previous day and this tasted exactly the same. I wonder if everyone just uses the same commercial pistachio custard base and churns it differently? This particular one is quite smooth and creamy, but also a bit on the softer side and less dense than other frozen custard I've had. I can't complain when this is only $2 though. (4/5) Fried Cheese Curds ($4) - I read about the curds here on social media and I have to agree that these are quite good. The batter on the exterior is pretty thick and fried to a fantastic crisp. The interior is stretchy, milky, squeaky as they stick to the teeth and have a more firm chew. The exterior batter has quite a bit of salt added after it comes out of the fryer, making this a treat that almost begs for custard or some other sweet beverage/treat on the side. (4/5) I'm not sure there is anything that they actually make in house, but hey, the prices are so cheap and they execute everything well enough that it makes me not care. I wouldn't make The Dairy Barn a destination for food or anything, but it's a solid place to visit while you're on the road. Note that they change the special custard flavor every week starting on Wednesday until they run out, so if you insist on the special flavor don't wait until Tuesday! Bathrooms - One single unisex room located on the right side of the exterior of the building. Overall rating of the food this visit: 4/5

Beware! The employee scared my daughter! Avoid until the fire him!…read more I stopped here yesterday with my daughter and their two friends. It was POURING outside. My girls, after being in the car for 2.5 hrs ran out of the car excited to take a break from driving, to use the restroom, and to get dinner at your McDonald's. While at the Kiosk, Jon approached me and asked if I was the owner of the red car in the parking lot. I said I was. He then yelled at my girls, saying that they dumped "a whole bunch of garbage" into "his" parking lot. I confronted my girls who adamantly denied this. I believed them for several reasons: They routinely participate in river clean ups, are VERY consciences of littering, and one wrote an essay on Greta Thunbrug! So, I asked Jon, "Did you SEE my girls pick up garbage off the floor of my car and throw it on the ground. He said "Yes". Highly unlikely! Is it more feasible that it was POURING outside, my girls were excited and trying to avoid getting wet, and they rushed out of the car to go inside and at the same time, being careless, 1 SOCK and 2 CANDY WRAPPERS fell onto the ground, or that they TURNED AROUND after getting out of the car, bent over in the POURING RAIN to stop and pick up garbage from the floor of my car to toss of the ground? I think the former is a more likely scenario and Jon lied and yelled at my daughter to save his own face in front of his fellow employees, so he didn't have to look like an ass for yelling at 4 preteen girls. My daughter was so upset that Jon yelled at her that she cried in the car for an hour before I could calm her down. Yes, maybe my daughters and their friends were careless, but should Jon have yelled at them in front of other customers and accused them of something they would not do? What a way to ruin an otherwise great vacation. Not only will I not be stopping here again, but I may stop taking my daughters to McD all together after this. (BTW- when we got home, the girls opened the care door, ran out, and guess what was on the ground- garbage.)

For the longest time, I thought they were only things of fairytales, like unicorns or pockets. But you can't travel 8 feet in the UP without being beckoned by a pasty shop. And because I'm me, I completely missed my opportunity until I was at the Michigan/Wisconsin border. But fear not! I wouldn't be writing this review if I HADN'T had one! So this pasty establishment was quaint. It had a drive through, a table in the inside and a table on the outside. I mess with that. Sometimes you don't need the extras. Now, as I learned about the pasty, it seemed like the most basic one was beef and rutabaga. Now, everybody knows that nobody knows what a rutabaga is. It's just one of those things that show up in recipes. And because I'm trying this for the first time, I want the full effect. So bring on the baga! Ok, so, since it was nice outside, I decided to sit on the picnic table. They gave me my pasty on a plate with utensils and I ordered 4oz of brown gravy to go with it. I split that bad boy down the middle like the Red Sea and waterboarded it with my gravy. Took a deep breath and dove right in. Listen. I still might not know what a rutabaga is, but I didn't let a single little square of them escape. Everything was hot, the crust was flaky, the gravy thiccc. Why did I never know these things were basically pot pies? I LOVE pot pies. It was gone in minutes. Just wiped out. Like Thanos snapping his fingers. There was nothing I didn't like about it. It was everything a first timer should have experienced. Pot Pie's Cute Older Sister, Pasty 10/10. A couple side notes: If you see my photos, you see I chose milk as my drink of choice. That's because I haven't had milk in three days and I was getting cranky. The only ONLY thing I would suggest, is they invest in either heavier duty plastic utensils or metal ones. Made it a little hard to cut into the bottom where the crust is rolled together. Certainly not something important enough to lose a star over, because honestly, you could punt this thing into a brick wall and I would happily eat it off there.

The Empanada is exceptionally delicious, the Beef + Rutabaga is 5 out of 5, wouldn't change a thing -- crusts are thin, delectable on their own, well-filled, cooked to perfection!
