And the dairy across the street.

The next time you find yourself north of Green Bay (doesn't everyone?) or on your way to the UP, stop for a little tangent off the highway and go to Brubaker's. I'm not sure there is a grocery store with more sincerity and quality. It is run by Mennonites who are always busy restocking and measuring and extremely pleasant. The row of neatly placed wooden rocking chairs on the porch out front beckons the back roads traveler. And if you are so inclined, you can even buy one of these handmade lovelies inside! The first thing you notice is the quietude when you enter. There is a part of me that feels like a citified jerk when I go in here, weighed down by my modern life and its gnawing hustle bustle. I'm practically twitching and chewing off my forearm in comparison to these calm folks. This place is a home cook's dream. Here you can find all kinds of bulk items measured, weighed and packed for you. Shelves feature dry mixtures for cakes and pies, things like sour cream and onion mix for potatoes, all kinds of preserves, jams, all sundry of items for home canning, baking breads and one of my childish favorites--an entire bag of the charms found in that luckiest of cereals. Hello. Last time I was there, I bought a beautiful small chef's knife, made in the USA (rarity). You can find ready to bake pie crusts and pastry items in the frozen section. The spice area is vast and if I could justify bringing them back home with me over 1,000 miles I would buy more. Can you find more humble charm than a table at the front with different sized hats that the women of the Mennonite community wear? Ready to question your existence on the planet, question what the hell life is really about and your place in it, question the amount of concrete, asphalt and noise we live with and why most of us don't seek the endless happiness found in the simple things? Then take the road (way) less traveled and stop by this place the next time you are in Northern Wisconsin. County Road A, between the dairy on the right and the dairy on the left.

This lady we spoke to smiled the whole time and the cashier was laughing. Horrible respect for customers, no action taken and for your prices, you would think you'd want a good experience. TL;DR: Excellent customer service, friendly, and followed through with my request, even a week after I had made it. A few weeks ago my father in-law messaged me asking to keep an eye open for New Belgium Oakspire beer. It's a limited release and he was a fan last year (which was a chore to find) and he wasn't to get some if I ran across any. I went to New Beligiums website and found that the nearest grocery store that carried it was Econofoods in Sturgeon Bay. Sturgeon Bay is a 2 hour drive from my home, but I like taking drives and it was autumn so I figured, screw it, I will take half a day off work and take a drive to get some beer for my in-law (and a 6 pack for myself). I called Econofoods asking if they had the beer. They took my number down and said they would check and call me back. The made good on this and called me in about 15 minutes, letting me know that they had the beer and that they would set however many I wanted aside for me to come and pick up. It was raining cats and dogs when I left, so my idea of a nice autumn drive went out the window. Even better, once I got into town my cars check engine light came on. I didn't think much of it, but almost immediately after getting onto bridge on 57 my car gave me a warning that my transmission was overheating. Yikes! I pulled over, found a mechanic, and got into a loner car and then headed over to Econofoods. They tons of the beer I was looking for, I loaded up the cart (completely forgetting that they had set aside beer for me) and headed home. A week later, about when I was going to return to pick up my car, I received a voice mail from Econofoods saying that they still had my beer up at the desk and asked me if I was going to be coming in to pick it up. A WEEK LATER. I felt like a total dick for leaving them hanging like that, but was taken back by the fact that not only had they held onto it for me, but that they took the time to call me back and leave me a message. Needless to say when I picked up my car I swung over to Econofoods, apologized for waiting so long to pick up my beer, and bought the 3 6 packs they set aside for me.
