The food was sad, barely any meat or veggies, bread was hard, wrap was flat, other bread wasn't fully cooked.

The workers are friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable about their products. I feel valued as a customer. Also, the food is not overpriced.

The shop is made from an old gas station that was converted into a cafe. They serve pastries along with a wide range of coffee beverages. I always find myself drawn to their seasonal drinks, which are usually themed around something fun. This year's holiday menu was Ice Age themed, but I remember last year being Shrek themed, and I think there was even a Top Gun themed menu at some point over the summer. For the Ice Age menu, I got a Manny which was a Chocolate Orange Mocha drink. I got it hot and it was great! The space inside is quiet, nice, and well lit. It's a great place to get work done. In the past, I've noticed the wifi could be tragically slow, which made some tasks difficult. During my most recent visit, though, I don't recall the wifi being slow at all, so it seems like that issue has been fixed. There is also plenty of outdoor seating if you get lucky with one of the three nice weather days in San Antonio. I really like the coffee here. For such a small shop, they do a great job, and it has become an essential stop for me every time I am in Castroville. RIYL: Coffee shops that are old gas stations but do not have a functional gas pumps anymore, so you don't accidentally get gasoline instead of a latte. I hate when that happens!!

Always hate when food trucks sell out, though it is understandable. Friendly employees, ready to answer any questions regarding the menu. What did we choose tonight? *Fried Mushrooms were unsatisfying. Slacking on flavor, breading overpowered. *Southwest Turkey Melt Sandwich, full of creative ingredients. Avocado, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pico de gallo, and even some kettle chips! Turkey was tasty deli thin cut, flavors came together well. Texas Toast was grilled with the right amount of butter an oil (you know how often places serve it drenched in oil!). I will say that the cheese was a little firm and the sandwich a little lukewarm for a "melt". Chose *Potato Salad as the side, which was tastier than expected; appreciated that there was not as much mustard or vinegar as most. *Mushroom Swiss Burger ironically had cheese that was far more melted than the Turkey Melt. Which was awesome, of course. Fresh and flavored sliced mushrooms (unlike them fried ones), a tasty fat patty (moist, tender, maybe a little extra flavor needed), and buttery, slightly sweet buns. Overall excellent. Came with *Fries, which were satisfactory; some were burnt and dry. Dessert was a *Fried Twinkie with Raspberry Drizzle. Oh, it was heavenly.

No. Did I know there was a Castroville-favorite restaurant there as well? Also no. We had to try it. Located inside the Alsatian Golf Club's clubhouse is their 19th-hole restaurant and bar: Julianna's Restaurant. Upon entry, you realize the place has been around for some time. It feels very classic San Antonio, with wooden walls accented by tan and white bricks. The restaurant's aged interior gives it a cozy, lodge-like charm. Though the restaurant was pretty busy on a Saturday night, we were seated instantly at a booth that gave me a perfect view of the Georgia-Alabama game on the bar's TV. After nine or eighteen holes, you never know what you're in the mood for. That's why Julianna's has plenty of options: sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, seafood, steaks, and other meat dishes. Our server came by very quickly and got us our drinks, which for me was a tall Saint Arnold Oktoberfest. I had a tough time deciding between two options: a bone-in pork chop or their creamy Cajun pasta. I opted for the bone-in pork chop with a Caesar salad, bacon green beans, and herb rice. My dad got the creamy Cajun pasta, and my mom got the Southwest chicken. It wasn't long until the Caesar salad came out, with huge croutons and a generous helping of dressing. It was excellent to the point my mom wished she had ordered it over her chicken tortilla soup, which she also enjoyed. If you ever order a meat entrée and they stick a steak knife in it, you're in for an ESPN Instant Classic. The pork chop was huge, topped with a house raspberry chipotle sauce. It was tender and cooked well. I'll admit, trying to find the bone versus the pork was a challenge, but I think that was a me issue. I would order it again. As for the sides, the bacon green beans were sneakily running for Sixth Man of the Year, and the herb rice paired with the pork chop quite well. I would go back. The meal was high quality and felt like a hidden gem even for longtime Castroville residents. What a treat. RIYL: Going to golf courses while being very bad at golf.

I had a small, scrappy team of 12 who could whip up sandwiches faster than a Formula 1 pit crew. Those were wild times. We didn't just make sandwiches; we made giants-absurd, cartoonishly large creations. These were Scooby-Doo-level sandwiches: towering monstrosities where you'd need two hands, a spotter, and maybe an engineering degree just to take a bite. I swear, some of those subs looked like they were designed to fuel Olympic athletes for an entire season. And the meat? Oh, you'd think we were carving up slabs for a medieval feast. But I digress, let's snap back to why we're really here. Today, I ordered the #8 (Club Sub), a turkey and ham classic with provolone, bacon, mayo, and a crisp layer of lettuce and tomatoes. Now, let me be clear: I'm usually a #9 guy. The #9 is my sandwich soulmate, my ride-or-die sub, the one I'd defend in a court of law if it ever came to that. For reasons unknown, the app didn't let me select it, and I'll admit, there was a moment of panic. But then I looked at the #8, and I thought, "Alright, let's give you a go." And let me tell you--this sandwich was beautiful. The turkey was tender, the ham savory, and the bacon crisped to perfection. That mayo brought everything together, and the veggies were fresh enough to remind me of my mum's garden back in the day (a bit of an overstatement, but you get the point). I got it "Mike's Way," of course, because who wouldn't? The vinegar, olive oil, and seasoning drizzle made this sub sing like Sinatra on a good day. Picking it up in person added another layer to the experience. There's just something about walking into a Jersey Mike's. The atmosphere hits you like a warm wave of nostalgia--slicing machines humming in the background, the aroma of freshly baked bread in the air, and the hustle of the team working in perfect sandwich-making harmony. It's fast-paced, but not rushed, with a sense of order and camaraderie that feels oddly comforting. It's the kind of place that makes you feel like part of the process, even if all you're doing is watching from the counter. This Jersey Mike's team absolutely smashed it. Their focus and hustle reminded me of my own crew back in the day--working hard, probably having a laugh or two in between orders. So to those workers today: Enjoy your time with each other. These days may seem fleeting now, but someday, you'll look back and realize you were building something special--sandwiches and camaraderie alike. I'm proud of you lot. Keep making those subs with heart and pride. Five stars, no question.
