Some of THE WORST customer service I've ever encountered. We walked in to be met like we were an inconvenience. Oh I'm sorry do you not want my money? They act like they're saving lives in there. You make sandwiches that I can get literally anywhere else. Calm the hell down. We told the owner we thought his staff was rude, and as a poor excuse for a man would do, didn't even look up at us and poorly tries to find out why we felt that way. Following the high reviews I stopped by for an Italian sub. The sandwich was fresh and tasty. Unfortunately they were not fully Covid compliant. The owner was wearing his mask properly, but his employee, also making sandwiches was not and some of the customers ordering were not. 1 star off for that. read more

Subman is the most loc'd out spot in Encinitas. Most of the people that go there have heard about it through word of mouth. It has the legendary reputation of surviving the covid outbreak, when all other sandwich spots died out. The owner Tim is a sandwich hero. Saving hungry Encinitas locals for at least 20 years or so; I'm not really sure how long... I don't think anyone is. If you want to add some magic to your sandwich get the awesome sauce. Way better than stupid board n brew sauce. Way back when Encinitas first formed, Subman was here. Subman has been, and always will be, here in Encinitas. If Subway and Subman got in a fight, Subman would wipe the floor with them.ding ding ding! We have a legend! Firehouse subs? Nope. Subway. No way. Subman for life. If you want an excellent sandwich, ask one of the employees for reccomendation. They have tried all of the sandwiches, and will hook you up with what they know tastes best. read more

We were in town visiting family and we love to support local businesses. We looked up Yelp and Subman was within 10 minutes of us. Looked pretty good. The front of the shop wasn't super impressive but then again some of these "hole in the wall" places have the best food right? The menu looked delicious. Figured we'd grab a couple local deli sandwiches and go sit at the beach and enjoy the weather and lunch. The staff was pretty helpful and friendly enough. Not over the top but they were courteous. Ordered a turkey and avocado sandwich for the wife and was asked if I wanted avocado because it was extra. Perhaps a new employee, but that was fine. Got the avo no charge on my turkey and avocado sandwich. I got an italian sub. Watching the sub being built, the meat was paper thin and not a lot on my sandwich. Guess I'm used to more a traditional old school Italian deli where my meat is stacked. The food was really ok. I absolutely don't have any complaints. Did it knock my socks off? Not at all. I'm glad I was able to support a local business but I wouldn't go out of my way to go to or recommend this place. If I was super hungry and it was right there, ya, i might grab a sandwich again but I'm looking for a better option next time I'm in town. read more

OMG! I haven't had one of these sandwiches in years! They used to be in a different location and I thought they had closed down. I was sad . And I just stumbled across them today. I typically shy away from gluten but I missed lunch today and my tummy is screaming at me. I couldn't resist and I know that I will pay for this later since I try to avoid bread. The bread is so soft but strong enough to hold all of the ingredients. And I love that they slice the meat in front of you. I don't go over board with my toppings. Just Mayo, onions, lettuce and jalapeños. A bag of chips and a water. They are so reasonably priced. $10.58 for my meal. Family owned. I can't even imagine eating at those other franchises places. Now that I know they are here I will have to eat this next time without the bread. read more

There isn't anything better than a giant avocado, roast beef, and cheese with extra pepperccinis from Subman. Except maybe everything else on the menu. It's all good. I went because we were hungry and they have 4.5 stars. Based on the people working there, I'd give them 5 stars. Based on the food I'd give them 2 stars, so I split the difference. Below average subs. We got three subs, regular cold cut type, meatball, and seafood. Cold cuts were about the quality of a grocery store refigerator section, okay for home use, but not up to par for a sub shop. The seafood came in a tub that looked like it may have been bought at a grocery store. The meatball was the real kicker, not good meatballs and the sauce was straight up tomoto sauce or maybe even tomato paste, not italian or any kind of seasoning. What made it worse was it wasnt cooked properly, they put it in the oven, but not close to long enough. The sandwhich was cold in the middle and cheese not melted. After finally returning to Subman, I realized that I love it even more than I remembered. In fact, I love it so much that I wish that there was a closer location to me. I'm not often in Encinitas but this is now at the top of my list of places to eat when I am in this part of town. I was a bit confused when I tried to find it as I didn't realize that it had moved locations. I thought I knew where I was going and then had to look up directions when I found out that it wasn't in the same spot. Luckily, it just moved across the street so it wasn't too difficult to find. The turkey sandwich comes full of fresh ingredients. I recently discovered that Italian dressing takes the sandwich to the next level and I highly recommend adding it. read more

I have to say, I'm a little upset with myself for not coming to this place sooner. I'm not a huge sub sandwich shop kind of guy, so whenever one opens up or I pass by a new site, I never mark it down as our next stop to eat at. I think the last sub shop I loved was on the Carlsbad / Oceanside border and closed down over 12 years ago ... maybe I'm just holding a grudge. Anyway, I come to this shopping center damn near every day. And with the exception of a new organic protein bowl place that opened in the back (which, I don't know ... m'eh), I've eaten at every restaurant in it. So passing by here all the time, I always MEANT to come and have a sandwich, it just took me living in Encinitas about a decade before actually getting around to it. Simply put, it costs the same as Subway (a Subman small sandwich is about the same size as a foot long at Subway), for the same cost, but Subman is WAAAAAAAY better. Put more complex, you walk in and the line directs you to the counter refrigerator. Behind the glass are the fresh and unsliced sides of deli meat, waiting to be cut up and stuffed on the bread of your choice. It's nice to see that over tubs of precut servings separated by convenient plastic sheets. Bread out of bags is next; not a bad choice, considering the quality and taste of the bread, and then the typical gambit of veggies and condiments you would normally see. And just like the meat before it, any cucumber or pepper you ask for is fresh and cut up before being tossed into the mix. All of it comes together to make a pretty good sandwich. Soft bread, good amount of meat and cheese, solid taste, great food all around. My only qualm would be that it doesn't aspire to that excellent delicatessen flavor that it really could be with larger variety of dressings and meat / cheese. They had no fresh mozzarella for the Italian Sandwich I had, mortadella, a staple of many a good sandwich in lieu of a substandard bologna was missing, no hard crust baguettes or french rolls, stuff like that. So, while not the best (or aspiring to be the best), Subman still ranks up there as quite delicious and an excellent choice when you have a hankering for a sammich. read more

Subman has been my favorite restaurant since I was in high school. You get so much food for the price and the sandwiches always taste fresh plus it's always consistent which is something you don't get often with restaurants these days. I love supporting small businesses and this shop has been family owned since 1980 and is the only location. Everyone in Encinitas knows of subman if you ask and no one has anything bad to say. The guys making the sandwiches are always kind and know how to make a great sandwich! The closest sandwich spots near it are super expensive and don't have 35 options like subman. I'm not sure what the hype is about. I wish I could say I was super wowed by the food but all I can really say was that the sandwiches were decent. Everyone there was super nice and patient as I tried to determine what to put on my sandwich, and essentially, it was cheap. Like super cheap for the huge sandwich that I got, and I can tell you, I thought I was getting a small size but I only was able to eat half of it. Walk in first thing you'll find is a nice subtle sandwich meat smell. Then you go to the counter met by cold eyes while you're looking at the menu, getting berated every .5 second asking what you want. Bread meat cheese. They wanted an answer as soon as possible. I look up to tell them to wait only to see a half popped pimple on the bottom lip of the guy behind the counter, white ooz traveling down his chin inching its way closer to the point of no return. I put my head down trying to spit out an answer before the human matter ends up on my sandwich. After pushing through the line I come to the cash register keeping a close eye on the sandwich making sure that nothing weird landed in it. The owner behind the register. I tell him that I thought it was rude that they didn't give me time to decipher the menu. All he said was "uh huh" then he faces his workers and asks them "what happen." Just a bunch of nothing I don't know what he's talking about I didn't do anything etc. looking at all the workers I decided I was not going to eat there. Wow! I tried this place in north shore Hawaii and loved it. Recently I noticed Subman has a a location in Encinitas in a plaza I frequently visit. Last night I decided to finally check it out. It was 6:45pm I was greeted by a nice gentleman that made my sub. He asked what bread gave me options I got the 9" Hawaiian roll ordered ham cheese and veggies. The sandwich was pretty big I could have gotten a 6" and been satisfied. Everything was fresh and tasty! I am so excited because i love sandwiches so this will be a go to for sure! Overall great sandwich spot. Honestly, I would give the sandwich itself 4 stars because there wasn't anything super special about it other than the sheer size. But it was a really good, solid sandwich. They have a really good variety of meats and combinations to choose from. Simple selection of veggies. Avo and Bacon can be added for extra $$. I got the large Italian and it was massive (see pics). I'm a pretty big guy and I couldn't finish it. Easily could be shared and it was less then $10. The service was fast, pleasant, and the prices are good. Add that to a really solid sandwich and they earned 5 stars and a loyal customer. The food quality here is excellent and fresh. They make excellent sandwiches but much like everywhere else they have raised their prices, reduced portions and customer service is even worse in this post-covid era economy. I get no one is immune to inflation but at least keep the same portions especially if you're charging more. While the menu options here are very good it's not worth the price to or the snarky attitude that comes from the people who work here. I doubt I'll be coming here as often as I used. It's too bad when businesses do this just to save a few bucks. That's how you lose customers. But oh well read more

Came in on my lunch because I noticed that they moved to a location closer to my work. I ordered the Italian sandwich, it was huge. Its just like any other sandwich shop, they give you a list of ingredients that you can add or take off. For the Italian sandwich you could choose between Italian dressing or oil and vinegar as sauces. Overall the sandwich was tasty, but it lacked some flavor. Subman is a staple in Encinitas, its been around forever and the owner and management is the same. They use the same chalkboard for the Menu. Everyone here is super chill.
