These guys did not disappoint. I outlined my requirements on my email message for bids and made a few requests. The first of which is confirmation that they were licensed, bonded, and insured. They were the only ones who provided me what I asked for which was a break down of their services plus an add alternate for additional things we wanted done. The work was done within the time frame that we agreed upon and the foreman called to notify me when the crew arrived at our house. We weren't home when the work was done but they left the job the way they found it. They cleaned up and there was hardly ever any trace of them being at my house to cut down a dead 50' redwood. I found Stumpy's Tree Service on Yelp. I was impressed by their reviews. I scheduled my appointment online and Ed, the Arborist, who came out to give me a quote. We had come to an agreement on what needed to be trimmed or cropped. I felt comfortable with the quote. They were booked out for 4 weeks. I asked them to let me know if they had any cancellations because the property behind my house was vacant (rental) so it was an opportune time to trim 3 large branches from the neighbor's yard. Nobody ever picks up the phone. They do not return calls even after leaving multiple voicemails. In fact, they don't even answer on Yelp messages for a quote request. Initially I gave them the benefit of doubt that perhaps they are overloaded with work and covid parameters have increased general processing times but I have called and left voicemail last month and then again yesterday and called again today. Sent a Yelp quote request twice now and still no response. My experience to even obtain a quote from them has been.. to say the least, very frustrating. read more

Stumpy's was great! We needed a stump ground out of our backyard and called a few places to get quotes. Stumpy's was the most reasonable and also they returned our phone call in a timely fashion and were very polite. So we hired them, hoping we didn't make a mistake. We didn't. They were great. They showed up on time, and we agreed to grind the tree down 12 inches. When they went to do it they realized that only a few more inches and it would be totally gone so they did that for us no charge. They also gave me some great advice on thinning my olive tree. Thanks Yelpers - I found Stumpy's on Yelp and it paid off! Glenn owns Stumpy's and he is a great arborist. He is now my tree guy! His crew came out to work on two huge dense magnolias, a crepe myrtle and an overgrown monster apple tree next to our house (okay, Glenn taught me the tree names). I am just a hack pruner but Stumpy's Tree Service is a professional service. I knew I needed someone to come out to work on trees above my ladder height. He came out for an estimate previously and he even apologized for having to schedule the work 3 weeks out because he was so busy. I can see why he is so busy - he does awesome work. And it is not just because his name is also Glenn. He had some advice but was really interested in my needs and helping me clarify the tree needs (e.g., security issues, shade, etc...). He has one crew and works all over the Tri-Valley area. He even came out to do a job for my friend up in Concord. He called the day before to confirm the actual day of work and showed up on time. His crew really knows their stuff - they did most of the trimming from within the trees and made sure to slide branches down along the tree trunk to minimize any damage at the ground level. They thinned out the trees and shaped them so that future growth would be optimal. They are really handy with the chain saw - not using it for brute force but for safe and efficient branch cutting. They cleaned all work areas (even areas they did not work in) and made sure our yard and our neighbor's yard (one tree hung over the fence) were in good shape after all of the work was done. Everyone on the crew said thanks for the work - this is not a typical thing to experience. Stumpy's is Glenn's business and he treats your tree trimming project with respect. It's amazing what a knowledgeable tree crew can do with my 15 trees. We usually have another company maintain out trees, but the last time they fell short, very short. It was time to find another tree company and YELP helped out with their rating system. Most companies only have a few ratings and most are very old ratings. Not STUMPY'S. They have over 50 and most are within a year. So they have been doing things right for a long time. So, I thought it was time to give them a try.
