Stumpy Lake is a pretty solid golf course. It's not flashy, but it gets the job done. If golf courses were like picking someone to marry, this one's your dependable "solid seven Susie". Not too crazy, not too fancy, just reliable and enjoyable. Customer service is always good. The staff and marshals are friendly and they're chill about bigger groups, which is a plus. If you're booking an early tee time, just know the groups are packed pretty close together, so pace might be a bit tight. Fairways aren't in perfect shape, but as long as you're not out there chunking every shot, you'll be fine. If the price was a little lower, I'd probably play here more often. Still, for what it is, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. read more

Stumpy Lake...... has a lot of potential and the course layout is nice. Very peaceful with nothing but open space and nature with the beautiful lake surrounding the course. The clubhouse is decent as well with a new indoor simulator experience you could rent out! Now I want to state that I am far from a pro or anything like that but I do play 50 plus rounds a year and pretty familiar with many of the courses in the area. The part that keeps me from giving it higher stars is the condition of the course vs the cost. I am not one to give many negative reviews but this course seems to be very overpriced and went up in cost??? This particular round, the Tee box was so hard you literally have to hammer in your tees and if they are plastic, you are surely to snap them in half. The fairways are also cut very close and rock hard with dirt patches making it very difficult to get a clean pitch or chip shot. The greens are in decent shape but the fringe and 30 yard off the greens.... good luck and be creative because the lie is very tight. Sure it is coming off the winter times but I've played this course during all the seasons not to mention playing throughout this winter on courses ranging from Suffolk to Williamsburg and have seen much better conditions ESPECIALLY for this price! It caught me and many others off guard. I am sure it will get better as the season continues but for now, it could use a little attention for what you are paying for. Have a go and see for yourself as the layout is pretty cool. Good luck and be creative. read more

I live in the area and I will NEVER return under any circumstances. This place is a joke. They put the tee times so close together that it is impossible to finish a round. Our tee time was at 311 pm. At 530 pm, we left early after playing 5 holes. Save your money and go anywhere else. If I could put zero stars I would. read more

Looks like they copy and pasted every hole. Not any variety. The bugs are horrendous, the staff was kind rude, they charge a holding fee for your tee time, and you lose balls in the fairway the grass is so high in spots. Pretty mid to be honest, better going to heron ridge for the same price in the afternoon. read more

I only used the driving range, practice green and pro-shop. They have a good pro-shop and restaurant. We had to wait 30 minutes for driving range balls. Apparently there was a mechanical issue with the ball collecting machine. The driving range did not use the turf ties. They used the grass areas. That is ok but the ground gets chewed up. They have cold water and paper cups at the driving range. It was hot without sun shelter except for the trees on the side. Large bucket only $11. read more

I was there last Saturday and the course was so much fun! The only down side of playing here is they rush you through the course and each player has to have a set of clubs to play. The employees that drive around on the golf carts have terrible attitudes and act as if this is some sort of PGA course. All in all. Fun course but not very friendly people. read more

Great for beginners. still a little challenging for people playing off of the tips. Lots of doglegs and hazards that come into play. So bring a few extra balls. I play this course when I am having the "yips." Mainly because their are no houses out there, taking out the "oh, shit" factor in golf. And somehow, I manage to swing great when I play this course. There are some spots on the course that are under repair, so call before you go just to make sure they haven't aerated recently. read more

The customer service is not up to par. My ladies league decided to venture to play here last night. While signing in I wanted to buy a hat because I left mine at home. The hat had a price tag of $25. Out representative told the clerk that he usually gives the ladies 20% discount. After discussing with the manager. They rose the price to 29.99 and sold to me for 24.99. Really !!! Just say no discount. The course is just okay. A lot of bugs, bald greens and poor customer service. They have just a snack bar. read more

One of my favorite places to play a round of golf in Virginia Beach. Green fees are reasonably priced ($35/person for a 9am Saturday round) and the fairway and green conditions are decent given the price point. Course is on the shorter side at around 6300 yards from the white tees but the silver lining is that the pace of play is just slightly over the four hour mark. Definitely worth checking out if you want to get some golfing in during a long weekend in Virginia Beach. read more

The course is great for beginner golfers ‍ having wide fairways and added challenges of elevated greens golf and dog legs. The greens were slow and had Mild grades of slope to them. The people were friendly and the Starter was a riot. Bring bug spray and sunscreen. The tee boxes had aeration done like yesterday which made finding stable footing difficult. Patches in the fairways were bald leaving "winter rules" for ball placement agreeable amongst our group in June. Driving range was adequate for use though in rainy times mats are deployed. read more

I've always been hesitant to tee it up at Stumpy Lake in fear of ruining my 2-0 record against the golf course. In 2000 I shot a two under 70. Two years ago I shot a three under 69. In golf you play the golf course. Shoot par or better you win. For lack of a better term I "own" this place. This was the case until I showed up a couple of Sundays ago. I don't get to play much golf anymore so putting up a low round to match my two previous good rounds was obviously going to be tough. The record now sits at 2-1. I shot an 82! :( Okay, so on to reviewing the course. First, bring lots of bug spray. The bugs are terrible!!! I was dressed with a long sleeve shirt and pants even with the temperatures hovering around 90 degrees and the bugs still managed to follow. The round took place late in the day so the greens were a bit slow. Stumpy Lake has always had a challenging layout, being home to the Tidewater Amateur for several years and where a lot of the good area golfers play a majority of the time. It's challenging but not extremely difficult course for the novice or average golfer to play. If it wasn't for the bugs I'd consider playing there more often. Unlike most golf courses in the area you don't have to worry about being surrounded by houses. They have a decent practice facility: a putting/chipping green and a driving range. I think their clubhouse is new (in the last five years), too. The guy working behind the counter was pretty friendly. Their carts are a bit old but that doesn't really matter to me. As long as they work and not break down when you are at the furthest point away from the clubhouse. For us golfers we prefer solid playing conditions: nice fairways, smooth and fast greens and rough long enough to penalize errant tee shots but not so high you spend hours looking for your ball. Outside of the greens this course had enough of what I would like to get out of a golf course. I get to play this course for $15 because of my membership at Cypress Point but it's not a place that I'd be wanting to go to often --- mostly because of the bugs. read more

One of the Hampton Roads Golf courses. This one seems to be the crown jewel in Merv Troyer's cap...in price only. I just don't get why this course is charging the rates that they do. The turf is a so so blend of rye and poa annua and is in ok shape. The greens are well covered with a few questionable patches here and there. The practice facility is strange. The range offers a ridiculously small bucket for $5, most of which are beat up or are balls found on the course by the maintenance crew. The putting green is back by the clubhouse and the chipping green is way over by the 1st tee. Weird layout! The front nine offers some really cool holes and one really awkward/tough par 5 with a forced carry over water. The back nine is just dumb. It seems as though they have had massive drainage issues from the nearby lake so they have carved water hazards into the middle of several fairways. The guise is that they have improved the design of the course, however, the reality is they have made a cheap attempt at fixing a problem and they have created some well hit tee shots to go into water that shouldn't be there. Also, they have added a pace of play nightmare with these "ditch" hazards. The staff is not the greatest but isn't rude, they seem to want to keep the course to themselves, which at their prices they are likely to do so! read more

Went out on a beautiful day to play a round at a place I'd been many times before. Very disappointed to find that it had been aerated 2 weeks ago, and we were not told that when making the tee time. Couldn't even really call them greens, since they were badly pitted with holes that were unevenly covered with layers of sand. Made putting impossible. Green surrounds were in terrible condition, and many bare spots in the fairways as well. Overall, a sorry excuse for how a golf course with such a nice layout should be maintained. Have recently played at Bide A Wee, Battlefield, and Red Wing, and I won't be coming back here for a long while. Too much good competition for the golfing dollar around here. read more

Never really knew this place was here. Friend of mine found an app or something that got a discounted tee times. My first time playing really enjoyed the course. A lot of other things around with respect to the nature park. They even had kayak rentals available when we played. Course is not bad, well kept. Challenging but not intimidating. I only lost two balls, so it was a win for me. Not too much water, not too many trees. Really enjoyed the round and would go back. read more

I hadn't played here before and decided to take my wife and give it a try. Got a great deal on the green fees and understood why. We got to the first tee and the boxes looked like they weren't mowed in days, tall weeds everywhere. When we got to the first green, I was totally taken aback. More compact dirt than grass. This was the norm on every hole. Extreme lack of maintenance. And the cup on the 10th green!!! At least 6" in diameter. Never playing here again!! Don't waste your money!! read more

We called ahead and made a tee time but weren't notified that the front nine was being aerated and we'd be limited to only playing the back. The course itself was in horrible condition. Terribly patchy greens and fairways with cart ruts all over. The clubhouse is very nice and they have updated carts. Those are the only positives I can come up with. read more

If you do not have bug spray I would not risk it again, we were driven off after playing 9 holes because the mosquito infestation was so bad. Been playing this course for years and I've never seen it like that before. Some of the tee boxes were straight dirt and looks like the grass had not been cut in over a week so keep an eye out for some pro v1s in the rough. read more

While on vacation a group of us decided to go to Stumpy Lake, I hesitated because of the price and the others were game for the price. It could be a great layout but if it rains the night before STAY AWAY. The drainage is horrible, every shot is an adventure. The starter told us they could rent us a kayak for the round and then proceeded to tell us it is either very hard pack or under water. So after a round of getting muddy we decided to try to get some lunch and were told the burgers were frozen and the wait would be a long time. I like playing here, especially since I have the Hampton Roads Golf Associate membership to get reduced fees. This course always seems busy though, and every time I come it seems like there is a group on the first green and a group on the first tee box. There is clearly a large group of regulars, so pace of play is a little slow. Staff are friendly, but be advised that they will not let you order food at the turn if it is going to take more than 5 minutes. Personally, I like that rule as there is nothing more annoying that hitting a logjam on 10 because multiple groups decided to take extended breaks halfway through their rounds. A menu and call-in number are posted at the ninth tee to help out with this. If it rained in the area then the course is going to be unusually wet and muddy compared to other area courses due to the lake. Overall a fun course, and I recommend giving it a try. Just don't come expecting to play 18 in under 4 hours. read more

Don't go after a good rain. It's been said on other reviews, but the course does not drain. Front nine has some dog legs that require a shaped drive or a precision straight shot to prevent going through the turn. The distances of the holes does give you an option to hit the 3 wood. A couple of holes on the both nines have a small hazard that runs across the fairway that is hard to see off the tee or during your second shot. Pay attention to the overhead view of the hole. It is great not worrying about breaking house windows and there was plenty of opportunity to work on escape shots. Since it was the first time I played the course, I didn't play the doglegs well. Well I played here in spring and early summer and I really enjoyed it. I love the layout and the setting in my the woods and along the lake. Here I am playing it the first week of august and it is really not nice. The tee boxes weren't cut. The greens were absolutely horrible. They were half dirt half green. The fairways were decent. It was only 29 dollars with a cart to play on a Saturday morning. So I guess you get what you pay for. I will not be returning to this course this year. read more

Literally have never had such a rude encounter with a golf course staff. Making the turn after 9, they put a 5 minute limit on our stop for lunch. Also limited what we could order off the menu...which basically came down to a hot dog or sandwich. Terrible customer service in the club house (however, the golf pros out on course we're very nice). Will not play here again unless I have to. I felt very, very rushed the whole afternoon, which took away from enjoying the actual golf experience. read more
